Square Enix has revised its approach to PC and console game development, and absorbed ¥22.1 billion (approx $140.9 million) in what it calls “content abandonment losses.”
In a warning to the investment community, the Japanese company said it would recognise the extraordinary loss for the fiscal year ended March 2024.
This is the result of a change in approach to Square Enix’s development of what it calls HD video games (PC and console, as opposed to mobile and MMO). In its note, the company said it wants to be “more selective and focused in the allocation of development resources”, and as a result of the “close examination” of its development pipeline with this in mind, is taking the multi-million dollar loss. Square Enix did not name the canceled or rescoped in-development titles.

@@moonjellykevin agreed. Maybe a port or slight graphical overhaul like they did with Star Ocean 2. The one time Square Enix actually touched this game they added an end game dungeon with a bunch of garbage fetch quests. The beauty of the base game is that every single side quest had meaning and could change outcomes in the main story. Square these days only knows how to do fetch quest crap. Even FF Rebirth, as much as i enjoyed it, is loaded with tons of pointless fetch quests. I doubt they could make any positive changes to a game as amazing as Chrono Trigger.

The reason we get this shit is because players are more negative than ever. Core gamers are a fraction of the industry despite being the most vocal online. Most players play a couple games a year, shit like COD, Fortnite, 2K, Fifa, and so on. Always in the top 10 on PSN. Sony’s first party IP’s, which are already extremely safe, only sell to a fraction of players as well. Take Ragnarok which at the time set records for Sony for selling 2.5 mill copies it’s first week. It was cross gen, so this is out of what, 200 million PS4’s and PS5’s in the wild? So 1 percent of console owners? That is crazy small.
But even when we finally get the rare game made for niche audiences with fan service like a Dragon’s Dogma or Stellar Blade, their own target market burns those IP’s to the ground for any hint of a semblance of an infraction. Lol. DD2 is honestly a miracle to have even been made. A triple A sequel to a cult classic that sold like shit at launch a decade ago. Unheard of these days. Or Stellar Blade, an unashamed hot girl action title. Both of those IP’s, dead. You think Sony wants to deal with that IP again after the vitriol? Days Gone sold 10 mill copies but players spit on it at launch because IGN said so and then wonder without a hint of irony why Sony hasn’t made DG2. It’s wild. They crapped all over Arkham Knight and Origins and wonder why WB made a live service game instead of another one. Or will another dev take a lesser known fan favorite and make a sequel years and years later with no indication the market wants it after DD2 was boycotted and driven into the dirt by it’s own playerbase? Yet when the type games people do complain about release, it’s met with a shrug and a ‘eh same shit everytime game sucks’ and move on. But it’s people not buying those games to begin with as well and Assassin’s Creed’s own audience doesn’t burn down the IP for mtx. Lol. So yah, no real surprise the industry is going this way. And honestly gamers get what they deserve on this one. Every game made for gamers has been pitchfork mobbed to death, lol, for the tiniest of perceived infractions despite doing everything else right. So here we are. And that shit is getting old to be honest.

    Why ?
Why do these companies keep borrowing billions, from Blackrock & friends, even when they spend , eg, 80 millions on a game, and make 700 or 800 millions ? Why ?
There's one single reason, for that. It's called:
    Shareholders
A studio that spends 100 millions in a game, then, makes 600..700 or 900 millions, that studio should then have enough cash, to 'stay afloat' , and to spend another 2 or 3 years developing a new game, with those un hundreds of m millions they have made, right ?
    WRONG
The leeches, the vultures called shareholders, and the admin board, they swallow ALL the money... over and over and over... and that studio finds itself having to borrow more and more money, that, of course, will have to reimburse.
And because those vultures always want more and more money, games must have ebb more microtransactions, more season passes, more skins, more everything!
Let's say Days Gone sold 8 million copies. Even if the studio only made 30 bucks on each sale, that's 250 millions. Well, 250 millions, should have been more than enough, to make days gone 2, + a new title. But no !
Yesterday, shareholders wanted some game to make 700 millions in the first 48 hours. Then, another game must make 950 millions. Then, 1.2 billions. Then... 1.4 billions.
At that pace, one day, a game will make 2.5 billions in the first 48 hours, instead of 2.6 billions, and the shareholders will call it a major flop, and the studio will have to fire 1000, 2000.. or 3000 employees!
    Money, money and more money.
And just like we all know, anything those capital/hedge/investment/ venture companies do touch, ends up dying.
The moment those blackrock & friends started approaching the gaming studios and publishers, by 2007, when they noticed games like candy crush were making hundreds of millions on iphone, it was basically OVER.
Is just a matter of 1 or 2 years, before another crash.
Video games are about love, passion, devotion.... when we add greed to the recipe, it's over.
Some ceo just farted ? Bam, 2000 employees must be fired. A game only made 600 millions, instead of 650 ? 900 employees must be fired. Some game dlc didn't sell enough copies ? 500 employees must be fired !
These investors, like blackrock, have absolutely no problems, no scruples, no moral, no respect, no remorses, whatsoever, with firing 2000...5000.. or even ALL employees, and completely shut down a company ! They absolutely don't give 2 fuks about that.

PS5 ONLY MOVEMENT is what caused this disaster of sales.
PS5 playerbase is way LESS compared to Xbox One/S/ONE X/PS4/PS4 Slim/PS4 Pro.
Should of planned the entire Trilogy on PS4 and Released on Xbox Aswell.
With options to upgrade to PS5 Versions in the future, if you upgrade to that console later.
Slapping a middle part of a trilogy on a completely different system was a mistake, expecially when the older consoles playerbase is millions more than the PS5.
And then saying the next one will most likely be released on the PS6 will also be a mistake.

Also Nintendo was doing exactly the same as square for 7 years, making 12 games each year (new games, remaster, remakes, ports, etc.) idk maybe is how Nintendo sells their games, but square is doing things wrong, by how things are going maybe Sony will buy Square, they are always together.

    ~This is a Slightly Deeper Look~ from A 3 - 4 year perspective
The only games keeping SE afloat and allowing them to fund other projects are Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI, The FF Remsater series and FF7 Remake first part.
Games we want that could actually save SE: Dragon Quest X another mmo, Mother 3, A Good Star Ocean, A Good Valkyrie Profile or remake, Final Fantasy Tactics 2, A Good Mana sequel, Remake Chrono Trigger or Make a Sequel.
Things Killing the Company: No proper PC releases, Console Exclusive
I am unique in that I buy 2 copies of almost every SE release due to PC and Console Exclusivity which lately has caused me to dodge titles altogether or wait for sales because of the mediocrity of games with flashy CG, repetitive gameplay, bland stories and no replayability.
Out of all the current games the only ones worth buying to ME were: FF7RB, FF7RI, OT2, SO2R, TOR , BDII, TriS and FF Pixel R series counting as 1 game due to packaging & price
Games I could do without or wait for sale: SO6, Harvestella, Forspoken, Outriders, DioField Chronicle, Guardians, Valkyrie Elyisum, Various Daylife they have to try to give away now, DQ Treasure, Infinity Strash DQ Adevnture, FF16
That's 8 out of 17+ games in the last 3 years. If you follow SE's history they have a cycle of making bad games to the verge of bankruptcy, then by a stroke of luck, genius or finally listening to reason from consumers, create a game that turns them around. Seems like even if they make a game to save them now exclusivity is going to be the Final notch in the noose to Finally hang themselves in the Fantasy RPG business.

If for 20 years you have done nothing but destroy the reputation of Final Fantasy with bad games, can anyone be surprised by the sales disaster of this company? and that's just talking about Final Fantasy.
I am a fan of OG Final Fantasy 7 and after finishing Rebirth I have no intention of buying the third part of this trilogy or any game made by Squarenix again, I am totally against the Remake/Sequel/Multiverse approach they have given to Final Fantasy 7.
the developers of Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth fails to understand that the major franchises that are in flames right now are in flames because the "sequel, prequel, extended material, etc" affect the view of the OG, Every canonically linked media always retroactively inserts stuff into the OG and changes stuff, especially stakesand, but the worst creates division among fans between those who do not like the changes and those who do like it.

Recall how it had taken Square Enix nearly three years to develop the LOGO for one of their games? Too, giving too much authority and oversight to ONE group of individuals might also herald a future spectacular downfall, as well. Moreover, consider Bethesda: when Todd Howard had been a game designer, etc. their quality had remained pretty stellar. Now that Howard remains as CEO of Bethesda, 'wut happened'? /smh

I think it’s a good move overall. People are getting picky with games because A. they don’t have the time to invest B. Price C. Development costs
They need to expand their genres too - have farming games, platform jumping games something fresh in between that’s fun but not costly and stick it on the switch. They can create great games just need more variation and quality and all set.

I’m a share holder. I get to see sales results. Square Enix games DO NOT SELL WELL on Xbox. And they only do meh on PC. The problem with SE is a failure to market properly and a failure to maintain past fans. They aren’t advertising games that could make a quick turnaround, and the games they are marketing they either make poorly (stranger of paradise, and Forspoken) or they assume they know better than Sakaguchi and do a JJ Abrams style reboot trilogy, rather than a faithful revival of the game people were asking for. FFVII went so far as to anticipate blowback and pre-attacked it with its stupid whispers nonsense, so they KNEW financial failure was a risk, and did it anyway.
This is on them. Not Sony. People bitching about exclusivity are coping and seething, because XSX has sold only a small fraction of what Nintendo and Sony have, and that’s why they aren’t getting games at all. Nobody wants to make games for a platform with flatlined sales.

All Square is doing is literally using any money they make back from their failures just to milk the Final Fantasy 7 remake games and for the next Kingdom Hearts. Square chasing trends, taking risks and westernizing their games, going woke, and turning everything into an "action RPG" is why they have been failing badly. They have lost their fans, lost their Japanese spark, and keeping their games true to their roots. Them wanting to "improve the quality of their games" isn't going to help when they keep making unrealistic expectations. No matter what excuses they say, the end result for them will just be more of the same. Plus, they keep getting yanked at the neck by Sony's dog leash.

Rebirth is one of the highest rated FF games ever made both from the press and players it’s got nothing to do with Rebirth.
Square Enix are just releasing to many average games on the side and way too many ports of older games ! They should just focus on FF and KH and bring a publisher and stop releasing 10x games per year that are mostly re releases of older games on different platforms and they should get out of the mobile business completely at least internationally.
