At best, those once-reassuring quotes ring hollow today. At worst, they’re outright lies. We’ve come a long way from Xbox fans once proudly decreeing, “In Phil we trust” and posting photoshopped Dark Knight-esque “I believe in Phil Spencer” buttons.
Awfully, Bloomberg reports that Microsoft might not be done making cuts. So this may very well get worse before it gets better. For developers, that would mean further job losses. And for gamers, that reportedly might mean a(nother) possible Xbox Game Pass Ultimate price increase. So how did we get here? Why can’t Xbox stop tripping over its own feet? And with the Xbox organization growing so massive over the past half-decade and its reach extending not just to consoles but to any device capable of playing video games, can the soul of Xbox even be saved?
I spoke to two former longtime Xbox employees, separately, and both lamented the current state of the business. One told me, prior to this week’s awful studio closures, “I had lengthy conversations with a bunch of Xbox founders, and we all came to the same conclusion: it’s no longer Xbox, but Microsoft Gaming.” Ouch. - Hry

Consoles these days only produce costs, not money. That's why Sony Entertainment more and more releases on PC as well. That's why you can play XBox games on PC and on an Android Smartphone.
The product XBox is all about is Game Pass. Period.
By today you can play XBox games on 5 platforms: PC, XBox Series, Smartphones, in a Browser (on a weak Notebook) and on PlayStation.
Consoles these days are a business of loss. That's why PS5 hasn't gotten any cheaper although PS5 Pro in right ahead.

Microsoft spent 69 billion on Activision-Blizzard and 7 billion on Zenimax.
The Microsoft executives who are non gamers and literally MBA number crunching drones have their sights on Xbox. They are now checking how they are not only gonna make back those 76 billion but also how to make a ton of money after. It means all games are now going sell COD numbers and if they don't they will be closed down. Things will get much much worse than now. It sucks that MS owns so many western RPG studios

Xbox as a brand is toast. More problematic though is that its Gamepass and corporate size is unmanageable and unsustainable. There are going to have a HUGE number of more cuts before the balance sheet makes any sense. COD on Gamepass will result in even more cuts when revenue slips. I have this strange feeling that it's now solely up to The Coalition to save the brand. The Gears 6 reveal next month must now be the most insanely impressive spectacle one could possibly imagine. I know we had the same discussion last year with Bethesda Studios and before that it was 343. Halo was not the saviour that Microsoft wished for and neither was Starfield. Maybe Gears 6 will be the one. It's ridiculous how high the stakes are for each Microsoft release. But who knows maybe Microsoft is totally chill about it. None of these studios got closed yet, so maybe they got some good numbers from both of these games.

I think your take is wrong. Nadella might have dictated budget cuts, but it is the managers who decided how those cuts were achieved. Someone at Zenimax proposed giving Tango and Arkane Austin the axe. At the end if the day, Phil signed off on the closures. Maybe it was because they were between projects. Maybe it was because the studio heads didn't play enough golf with him. We'll never know the reasons.
For those who dont know...tango lost its top founder who made resident evil. But...he had no input in high five rush...their most successful GAME!!!
So him leaving wasnt the issue as they also managed the ghostwire DLC without their old leader. But I think the issue is despite high five rush being awesome and critically acclaimed...it didnt make much money or generate subs. Not enough but xbox lied about this repeatedly leading to this shock.

The writing was on the wall after the 360. They lied about the Kinect being the only way to play your XBox One, they lied about the games that were supposedly coming every year since 2013 and they lied about being there for the gamer. Microsoft is a business company before a video game one.

i predicted 10 years ago that they would leave the hardware space and focus on game publishing if they failed one more console generation (which they have). releasing games on playstation should be a clear inidaction of their future plans. i wonder why it took so long for people to open up their eyes to this? the writing has been on the wall for a while now. the market share was never there. the hardware sales were never there. the games were sparse and many of their tentpole releases have been a mess (including halo infinite). mismanagement has been an issue for a long time now. the idea of games pass was never sustainable. it only makes sense all things considered that they stop making consoles and become a 3rd party software publisher. but even as a publisher, they will likely dissolve half of their studios within the next 10 years since xbox doesn't have a good grasp on the project management side of things and never has. remember scalebound? how long has perfect dark reboot been in development hell for? (surprise, it is never releasing). crackdown 3 was hot trash after years of xbox PR misleading people and hyping it up, knowing damn well what they had on their hands. microsoft caters to their shareholders first and foremost which means most xbox studios don't have a prayer unless they can hit home runs with every single project. we know that is not going to happen, espcially with its smaller studios such as inxile, double fine and ninja theory. 343 and rare are hanging on by a thread at this point.
I think the hardcore fan base became a bit delusional since Phil has been in charge. What I don’t understand how anyone thought MS buying up all the talent was a good idea when their track record of managing studios has been poor. Plus this whole trend towards games as a service has led to everyone jumping on the trend instead of letting the developers work on games that they’re good at.

But will things be fine for the studios they bought? In 2014, MS bought Nokia phones. In 2016, they closed the business and took a $7.8 billion write down on the purchase. That's the problem with a $3 trillion dollar company. They don't need Xbox and could shut it down as a tax write off and still be fine.

Phil Spencer just forced me to cancel my game pass sub, Sell my Series X and get get a ps5 instead. And now i'm enjoying FF Rebirth, Stellar Balde and soon with Silent Hill 2 Remake so i'm glad he helped making it easier lol

Sea of stars, Diablo 4, persona 5, elder scrolls online and Skyrim, destiny 2. All games that I can play for free/with gamepass. I got more games to play than I know what to do with. Oh yea also hollow knight is on there and on my backlog.
