Probably the best write up on what's happening at Xbox right now.
TLDR Gamepass is slowed, Microsoft spent a shit load on acquisitions & now Xbox NEEDS to show a return on investment. CoD & big franchises are safe, everything else... This would explain why smaller games at like The Coalition are being cancelled so they can focus on Gears 6. Its also why rumors have been widespread about Xbox games going to PlayStation along with another pay increase for Gamepass.
Nightmare that Spencer & his team created.
It just makes me believe that Activision Blizzard purchase may have been the worst decision Spencer & his leadership team ever made. Especially now when they NEED that $70 Annual Call of Duty purchase from players BUT they rightfully expect it on Gamepass day 1.
I fear for devs like Obsidian & Ninja Theory The Gamepass model now really requires Xbox to deliver regular quality content that drives subscriptions. Hasnt happened. Small games aren't doing that & big budget failures like Redfall are just putting more pressure on everyone.
Xbox is in a $70+ Billion dollar hole right now. - Hry
A few years ago, if you dared to suggest that GamePass was unsustainable, you were crucified in the comments. Welcome to reality.
It's not so much that Gamepass isn't sustainable, it's more that the entire industry isn't sustainable at the moment. Sony's profit margin is down 50% compared to a few years ago, for example.
and its crazy because there was no reason why it should work in reality. this was extremely foreseeable
@@fcukugimmeausername Are you comparing their profit margin to the pandemic (2020-2021) levels? If so, of course they are down. No one could leave their homes which sent gaming revenue to the moon. Now they're coming back down. I'm curious what their profit margins are now compared to 2018 and 2019.
The industry isnt unsustainable, Sony just bet all their chips on massive budget games. If you just stop putting investors first and focus on smaller more manageable games with respectable profits the industry is totally fine. @@fcukugimmeausername
The thing is gamepass has a lot of nothing there’s no games people want to play put Call of duty on there etc.. that subscription service will pay itself period
The dystopian model of Microsoft is "you will own nothing and be happy about it." Plugged in to a monthly subscription fee, we will come out owning no games and be happy about it. It sounds like so many dystopian movies from "1984" on.
That's not how it works with gamepass, also nice try pretending Sony isn't woke, also nice job forgetting all the data hacks Sony has had.
Man... That it's so stupid. Having a subscription doesn't mean everything is inside the gamepass thing. Is a way to game.
In fact, if that was the way to go, they wouldn't even sell digital games anymore. Everything would be in gamepass. Also, they allow play on PC and xbox if you got the chance to have play anywhere games.
This negativeness is part of the "be angry at something" today.😊
You don't understand 1984 if that's what you got from it ROFL
The only thing missing with GP is to get some bugs as a bonus to subscribe.
@@prezidenttrump5171 I think he means the WEF.
I saw the bait that was gamepass from day one. It was obvious that they are at first gonna be extremely customer friendly and well priced so they can get high enough subscriber numbers to then flip the switch and hit us with price increase after price increase after price increase!
Problem for them and ultimately good for everyone else, they failed at stage 1 - getting enough people to subscribe.
and also not having good exclusives. That's why Playstation is still winning. At the end of the day, the games is why people buy consoles.
Still beter than the Playstation method of increasing prices too much and too soon without providing any value 😂
@@KJ-je9pmplaystation has even less games, what you talkin about.
I love the old Playstation, but ever since ps5 they're crumbling and they don't look to recover any time soon or at all.
@@SpaniardNL I’m talking about good exclusives. Give me a list of critically acclaimed Xbox exclusives in the past 10 years besides Halo Infinite and even that had mixed reviews. Same with Starfield.
Who would have thought if you mess up all your exclusive games and offer nothing special people would go with competitors.
Every CEO competitor said GamePass was unsustainable and doomed to fail.
Here we are
Maybe if they just kept it on game pass and actually just released games before putting them on game pass it would have worked but instead they had to be stupid and overconfident about it pretty much anything involving Xbox since 2013 it really sucks that only two generations of Xbox were good and then two generations later it sucks all because they just can't have good developers making good games and even if they do they fire them anyway right after high five and even if they do they fire them anyway right after high fi rush so f****** stupid I'm pretty much never getting another Xbox again and just stick to Sony Nintendo and PC if they don't change their ways and have good stuff again we're playing no one is ever going to work at Microsoft again especially let alone buy from them they're going to end up worse than Sega at this point pretty much a darker reflection of how Sega could have ended up as.
Platform exclusivity is the one thing the Xbox lacked from almost the very beginning. Now we have Game Pass everywhere, rendering the Xbox console worthless. Worse, Game Pass is a monthly service that allows folks to "try" dozens of games rather than paying for them individually. Please make it make sense.
well... this makes sense to me - no vr, no gyro, no adaptive triggers, no haptics. TWO machines every dev hates. fk xbox.
Yep, I wanted Palworld but I have a ps5 so, I was hoping it'll port in a few months but when I was seeing if I could download paramount plus on my smart tv. But then I saw the game pass app listed so i now I ended playing Palworld on my TV.
It'll be on Playstation soon. @Mysticgamer

👏👏 I've been saying this since Gamepass was created. It's honestly the best deal in gaming, but that doesn't make it sustainable.
Most I think realized that except Microsoft I guess. I was hopeful they would fix some of these acquisitions but instead they EAd them and shut them down unfortunately.

Xbox failed the day Xbox One was announced. They never recovered after that.
Exactly. They had Halo and Gears. How they fucked those powerhouses up is beyond me.
They failed before that when they stopped the exclusives around 2009 on the 360.
The realist. The last Xbox I bought. Knew after that, this was it for the Box.
@KyleReeseCel2029 When I knew Microsoft was in trouble was when they goofed up on Too Human. A hotly anticipated game that failed because Microsoft didn't lay out a good plan with Silicon Knights.
All of the cool, innovative ideas from the original version shown were not in the finished version, and if they had handled it right, Too Human would've been their next Halo and Gears. I know, Silicon Knights were the ones goofing up, but Microsoft could've taken control to right the ship, but they didn't.
@michelletackett9489 They had picked too many exclusives that must of lost them money. Scared them off of exclusives. There was no way they were going to maintain market dominance without many must buy exclusives. Even Halo & Gears were always generic. At least in the past they had several console exclusive pc ports, ran games better and had some reasonable exclusives. Now it's practically nothing. Terrible inexperienced leadership at that company.
It's not overambition that is killing XBox. It's false prioritization. Spencer doesn't care about games. He puts all efforts on distribution. But Halo and Gears of War have taught us that a single brilliant game can sell a whole console generation. Sony understand this.
That's because Phil is clearly just a marketing guy. He's shown time and again that he can't tell a good game from a bad game if his life depended on it.
@@fattiger6957 Yes, he seems like a nice guy. Probably why he made it this far. But his decisions are questionable at best, agreed.
Understands*
Microsoft is a company made up of the WORST KINDS of people in the executive class BECAUSE they reliably generate money from their “status quo” products.
So there’s probably thousands of investors there with BILLIONS OF DOLLARS poured into them THAT Microsoft and Satya Nadella HAVE TO LISTEN TO who don’t care about ANYTHING other than seeing the value of their investment GROW.
adorably no vr, no gyro, no adaptive triggers, no haptics. TWO machines every dev hates. fk xbox.
Saturo Iwata took a paycut when the WiiU failed. Switch went on to crush. Xbox terminates its best developer and spends millions on legal fees to spend billions to buy another dev when they can't manage the devs they have.
They never intended to "manage" these studios... They wanted some assets... The most mindblowing is that people didnt see that...
@@pse2020 I agree. Xbox is not a gaming company--they don't have creative like Miyamoto or Neil Druckman. They are the US Tencen of gaming.
@@siciliangamer Microsoft can't be the Tencent of gaming because the latter actually makes tons of profit. Microsoft gaming... not so much.
@@Shinjiduoand tencent is a better company 😂you must be 9 years old
@@ICon-sy7go What? I have no idea what you mean by that. Tencent actually makes money off its gaming acquisitions. Microsoft seems like at least so far they have no idea what they are doing. "Better" or "worse" mean nothing in that paradigm.
The real reason why companies love subscriptions is because most people who pay for it eventually forget about it and continue to pay infinite money forever. Its literally blind robbery.
And that's why I would rather buy stuff and be happy rather than the other way around.
I've never understood gaming subscriptions....the moment you stop paying for the service, you can no longer play the game that you enjoy. For those that like gaming subscription services...what is it about the subscription model that you like?
The only benefit for subscription models for me is that I pay one month and can try out many games and play small indie games or very short games that have zero replay value. I would never subscribe for longer than that
any subscription
Is it just gaming subscriptions you don’t understand ? Or are Hulu and crunchy roll confusing as well ?
The low prices duh. You get ton of games for such a low price. Hence it killed dev game sale.
I generally avoid subscription models for the exact reason you gave, so paying Gamepass month to month would be an absolute ripoff. Prepaid for three years at a steep discount with no auto-renew, I treat it as a way to play a number of games. If I like the game, I’ll buy it physically. It really comes in handy for games that are a ripoff on day one like Persona 3 Reload and its DLC.
If this is about the console wars, seems the japanese just played the long run
And it's been good for everyone. Look at Capcom and Nintendo. Iwata took a paycut with the WiiU and the Switch went on to outsell everyone.
They should've used the 100 billion to subsidize their premium console, selling it for 99$. Would have been sufficient for 250 million boxes and PlayStation would have lost the war.
Yup, you cant tell these idiots anything. Japan's yen is 60 percent of a US dollar. So sony is worth 95 billion. Microsoft is 3 trillion. MS lost 90 billion just from inflation alone...or the whole of the entire sony corporation, just from breathing air. Sony winning the console war compared to real life....is like a chihuahua killing a bear. Xbox is beyond a disaster.
@@eSKAone- People still wouldnt have bought it. Series X is not worth even $99

Mediocre exclusives, false promises, unmet expectations, rampant corporate mismanagement, and a complacent fan base are just some of the things that drove Xbox down to its current nadir.
The Phil Spencer interview: "Yeah, it was tough to see such talented people go; our bad; but we still have an exciting 2024 to look forward to"
Sound very jim ryan to me.
Gamepass never made sense on the long run. Yeah, it was an attempt to snatch some of the playerbase, then you switch the deal and adjust it, happens everywhere, but Xbox kept gamepass at a loss for WAY too long without making a real dent in the market ecosystem.
I remember people saying that 2024 is XBox’s year…. Yup… sure is!
The year everyone talks about xbox, but not for good reasons

Lack of compelling exclusives was always Xbox's biggest problem ever since the launch of Xbox One. Them buying a gazillion studios was supposedly the solution for that problem and now they're shutting those same studios down before they even had their chance to produce something under Microsoft.
All these problems were obvious and many people have been pointing them out for years. Game Pass just plain isn't able to sustain the kind of massive-budget AAA games that actually sell consoles with the kind of user numbers Xbox gets. And there was never going to be a chance that Game Pass would reach the subscriber count where they could fund AAA game development.
Game Pass is just running into the same issues that Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, ect are discovering. Can't attract enough subscribers to keep the plates spinning. Even Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are running into issues to where they either have to raise prices all the time or put ads in the service.

8:51 - Just to add context. Microsoft's makes off money off of Windows and Office licenses. The revenue they get from the Xbox brand is like comparing breadcrumbs to a buffet.
Don't forget Microsoft Azure web hosting, that's a multi billion dollar industry.
The problem is they spent how much on acquisitions? Xbox cant cost the company 100B, and return bread crumbs for revenue.... not for long, anyway.
@@tqllaThat's true, no matter how rich a company is, they can't or won't let something drain them unless it's useful, even if it has to change to become useful, if that doesn't work out, nothing more than to close it or sell it on.

I hope one day somebody studies how American corporate culture and Japanese corporate culture impacts the gaming communities. American companies from Atari to Activision to EA to Microsoft are almost always hated by the general public due to the perceived greed and cutthroat nature of the companies. Meanwhile Japanese companies like Sony, Capcom, Nintendo, and Sega have legions of adoring fans.

I’ve always said that GamePass does not make economically sense. It is truly a paradox because either gamers will be unhappy because it costs too much or devs/executives will be unhappy because there is not enough money if they charge too little. Even all the major media outlets avoided the topic like they were under some embargo on it lol those who did speak on it supported the idea but with no real evidence or numbers. Even Michael Pachter looked like he was being sponsored (joke) in his positive words for GamePass again with no real numbers but just a vibe.
I just canceled my XBOX sub yesterday.
Honestly I didn't realize till recently that I was actually still paying for the Xbox Ultimate Game Pass, but it turns out I've been paying for it for a while now. Xbox got at least a year of that subscription money before I noticed. A big reason why I didn't take notice of before, is because I no longer play on my Xbox, and that's some one who played for over 15 years, just turned around and decided to quit because it's been garbage for too long.
(And The reason why I didn't notice that I was still paying for an Xbox Live subscription, -->which I'd never agreed to to begin with
I was never an advocate for Game Pass even when they were handing out those introductory $1 GP trials/deals. Saw the writing on the wall even at that moment in time and stuck with legitimate gaming companies in Sony/Nintendo.
Wondering if Nintendo foresaw this situation years ago when they were approached by Microsoft for an acquisition.
Look for me in comments about this months ago saying that Xbox would falter when people thought them buying these studios would put them on top. I predicted this.
I started out on the original Xbox. Microsoft continues to show they treat gaming like a fad or just a commodity.
Started with the classic Xbox back in 2003. I was a big fan of the console since day one, and loved my xbox 360, and all the games i played in it. Downfall started on the Xbox One for me. Graphics were cool and all, but there were few exclusives, and newer games started to feel less fun, more grindy. I still come back to Warhammer 40k Space Marine, Halo 1-3/ODST/Reach, Jet Set Radio Future, and so on, but can't bother to go back to Assassin's Creed Odyssey/Valhalla after finishing it once, or to continue Forza Motorsports 7, and have an hard time grabbing Soul Calibur 6 (the load times are obnoxious compared to the previous ones).
It is clear, and it still baffles me no one notices: Microsoft killed Xbox from the moment they started to consider it a service, rather than a gaming platform. From that ill-fated day of 2013 when they revealed the Xbox One (in which talked barely about games) to this day. And now they will keep beating a dead horse until it doesn't sell anymore. Then, like most studios, MS will just forget about Xbox and move on with the next cashgrab method.
The truth is that it is a commodity. All companies work and pay to sell the product and earn money. They are not there to make you happy
Remember when Phil Spencer said you get xbox exclusives every 3 months😂
Oh damn I forgot about that lmao, dude is a scam
I haven't. I brought it up to that loser Andy. He just deletes the comment that give him actual facts when it comes to Xbox.

Just like TV, subscription based services killed off the traditional ways of making money and now they realize that the subscription model is not aa profitable
And almost all the Hollywood studios are suffering for going all-in on streaming services.
What you said at the beginning about them not really saying what’s going on is what gets me. Even when rumors were flying about what might or might not be going to PS5 before they made an official statement, I wondered why they couldn’t at least have their social media people shoot down certain rumors. We KNOW they knew people were floating “starfield is going over” or “whole slate” and just let the rumors fly for days. They couldn’t have someone tweet out “We’re heard the community and just wanna say that’s not true (for now)”. In this case, no one representing them can say “We’ve seen speculation about why certain studios closed/merged” and x,y,z reason are not true”.
I wonder why would anybody put their trust on any multibillion soulless corporation whose sole objective is to make profit with the least amount of effort.
I know some people may not remember the game, but when I knew Microsoft was in trouble is when a game called Too Human came out and flopped.
Too Human was a hotly anticipated game that was first announced on the PS1. It was originally going to be a 4 CD game due to it's ambition. Then when Silicon Knights teamed up with Nintendo for the wonderful Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes, Too Human got moved over to the GameCube.
The game looked awesome, but more then that, it was very innovative. Things like putting parts into your character to make them as strong, or as fast as you want.
You could play the game differently. Either a rough brawler with a muscle build, or more stealth-like making your character faster.
Too Human was going to be broken up into 3 games. And, (see if this sounds familiar), the choices you made were going to carry over into the next game.
The story was gripping as well. The main character John was investigating the murder of his partner by a gang with power, and the further he went down the rabbit hole, the worse things got. Corporations using their money to make robotic humans (hence the name Too Human), and dark subject matters. What we got, Norse Gods Mythology.
Instead, Denis Dyak kept changing it until it became this weird all God idea with repetitive gameplay and no style.
If Microsoft had taken over and helped Silicon Knights make the game great, it would've been their next Halo and Gears of War. Instead, it was an expensive flop, and ever since, Microsoft hasn't been able to make a new franchise worthwhile, and they've kept making one bad decision after another.
Their fult for pushing the living hell out of Game Pass. They get what they deserve

If I had a penny for every time I’ve seen Xbox developers laughing at the Xbox company I would have multiple, way better than the overused joke of only having 2!
Are the devs of Scorn still there? Why the fuck would choose them over Arkane and Tango?
They don't own the devs that made Scorn. That game was just a timed exclusive....
Gamers were sold on GP at the beginning when MS was buying studios left and right, hoping once MS owns like 48 studios, devs have 4 year development cycles and can release one new game on GP every month. Reality hits and its never sustainable to begin with. Now MS needs to cut projects and studios so the price of GP can make sense as a rental service.
Skycaptin5 was saying death of xbox is inevitable and Phil is wolf in sheep's clothing
Why pay full price for a game if you can sub for just 1 month and get the game and finish in that time....
then turn around and buy if to choose so
Everyone knew this would happen because of Game Pass. Day one Launch killed them. Games don't sell on XBOX.
Damn kinda wish Xbox bought Ubisoft just to get beyond good and evil 2 cancelled been waiting to long
We Sony & Nintendo gamers welcome expat Microsoft gamers to our side.
I can still find a copy the box set of Persona 3 Reload Aigis Edition at best buy for Xbox even now. Physical games just do not sell on Xbox.
0:00 What's up Geyburs?
I bet inflation and the big budget on making games and bad sales on bad and broken games are the reason why Xbox Gamepass isn't profitable enough.
I have an XSX & Gamepass Ultimate! I will try a game for about a week then I buy it! If there is a physical copy, I buy that if not I go with digital download! I am in the minority! My friends think I am weird, but I like to actually own my games! I know gaming discs are dying out really fast, but I will always have mine! The way it is going I will use my XSX & Gamepass until they die! Then it is PC gaming only because I am not starting over with Sony & doing the same thing! Microsoft wants Xbox to be a gaming streaming service that is why no consoles will come out in the future! Why does Hellblade 2 not have any marketing with its release date soon! After that game releases I think Ninja Theory is next on the chopping block! I have no faith in Avowed, Fable or anything releasing in the future until it actually does! I will be pissed if the axe Clockwork Revolution before its releases!
I actually thought xbox would be the eventual winner by focusing on streaming and getting rid of the console.
Although now im not so sure. They blew so much money on the activision merger that it might not have been worth it.
And i doubt they will get more game pass subscribers unless they put a massive game like call of duty on game pass. But then thet will hurt the usual sales that call of duty gets.
Its bad. Unfortunately the developers will feel the hit more
Xbox has been done since xbox one and the Kinect.

There’s just no way to finance high quality titles at that price especially with spending so many studios. They either need to up the price of the subscription, cut the budget and make lesser quality games, or cut the number of the studios…and it looks like they are doing all 3. No way you can spend that much on studios and release only to the small Xbox install base
The whole Game Pass thing almost killed the Xbox brand. Releasing AAA titles on day 1 on Game Pass is nice, but no one will buy an Xbox just for that,. Those who enjoy having many games on a subscription, will only subscribe for a few months just to play the games that they don't plan on buying, and then stop the subscription.

Am am really sad about this. In truth I was hoping that Microsoft would be able to compete with Sony so that it would have competition in the game space but they flubbed it. I just don't see how they can recover after this. Looks like the only things we'll see from xbox in the coming years are call of duty, mobile games and a billion permanently dead IPs.
Remember when Ms wanted to buy Nintendo. Its to shut them all down and them being a monopoly. Same with Nokia and everything else they buy out.
Looking at xbox and the bet they made it was only a matter of time before Microsoft decided it already had too many opportunities with no significant results. Only thing we didn't know back then was how much time was Microsoft going to allow it before saying enough
Were Microsoft fucked up was spending way too much they could have bought something else then Activision. They were only looking with $$$ in their eyes. They should have continued to push physical and digital purchases with the games droping on game pass 6 months after the initial release. If someone is paying 6 months of game pass waiting for the next AAA game to drop they can play the other AAA that droped 6 months after initial release. They could have maximized on hardcare fanboys while still doing the netflix style of service. After a point remove physical then make digital and the gamepass. Then bumped up to 3 montgs after release. They were trying to be 4 steps ahead of where their infrastructure even is. Physical purchasers were more likly to buy on PlayStation for 3rd party they pushed that market away. Some digital purchasers like to own the license as well. Them not taking time to continue to put stuff on PlayStation to make some that multi billion purchase back. They could have takin the market in 10+ years all they had to do it learn to walk before they tryed running and they failed. As good of a deal as game pass is they have thrown all their eggs into one basket and now they paying for it it was never sustainable.
Killer Instinct needs to be on PlayStation.

Would be sick AF if Sega decided to come back to the hardware market after Microsoft inevitably goes 3rd party.
Xbox should do more cross progression saves so people might buy multiple copies

If you'd watched any of DC guys recent vids... The top comment is always some guy saying " day 8 of asking dreamcast guy to make a video not wearing a hat....." Etc
@@GOREDO5 there was a guy asking him to make a video without a hat on lol
@@SeminoleBoy144 why
I've said this for years. Microsoft has never once released a game that made me want to go out and buy their console. Since MS is worth literally trillions, they can treat Game Pass the way they do. They really didn't care if it succeeded or failed because there was a safety net. Sony, on the other hand, relies on exclusives.. exactly what the players ask for, and it's a massive success. It's hard to feel empathy for xbox because they thought that buying all these studios would turn the gaming landscape around, and it has done the complete opposite lol
Brad Hilderbrand was right on the mark. The only thing I would say is there is a definite third reason for Xbox's downfall, and that is: unfinished games being released.
