Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.
Alpha Dog Studios, maker of mobile game Mighty Doom, will also close. Roundhouse Games will be absorbed by The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios. Microsoft did not say how many staff will lose their jobs, but significant layoffs are inevitable. IGN has asked Bethesda and Microsoft for comment.
On Redfall, the disastrous vampire co-op game will now not receive promised updates as Microsoft has ended all development on the game. Microsoft said Redfall will remain online to play, and it will provide a "make-good" offer for those who bought the Hero DLC.
Arkane Lyon, which is working on Marvel's Blade, survives the cull, as does Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Starfield), and Machine Games (Indiana Jones and The Great Circle). Doom developer id Software is also unaffected.
In an email to staff sent by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft blamed the cuts on a “reprioritization of titles and resources”. The email, verified by IGN, is below:
Today I’m sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.
To double down on these franchises and invest to build new ones requires us to look across the business to identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success. This reprioritization of titles and resources means a few teams will be realigned to others and that some of our colleagues will be leaving us.
Here are the changes going into effect:
Arkane Austin - This studio will close with some members of the team joining other studios to work on projects across Bethesda. Arkane Austin has a history of making impactful and innovative games and it is a pedigree that everyone should be proud of. Redfall’s previous update will be its last as we end all development on the game. The game and its servers will remain online for players to enjoy and we will provide make-good offers to players who purchased the Hero DLC.
Alpha Dog Studios - This studio will also close. We appreciate the team’s creativity in bringing Doom to new players. Mighty Doom will be sunset on August 7 and we will be turning off the ability for players to make any purchases in the game.
Tango Gameworks - Tango Gameworks will also close. We are thankful for their contributions to Bethesda and players around the world. Hi-Fi Rush will continue to be available to players on the platforms it is today.
Roundhouse Games - The team at Roundhouse Games will be joining ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS). Roundhouse has played a key role in many of our recent game launches and bringing them into ZOS to work on The Elder Scrolls Online will mean we can do even more to grow the world that millions of players call home.
With this consolidation of our Bethesda studio teams, so that we can invest more deeply in our portfolio of games and new IP, a small number of roles across select Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will also be eliminated.
Those whose roles will be impacted will be notified today, and we ask that you please treat your departing colleagues with respect and compassion. We will provide our full support to those who are impacted in today’s notifications and through their transitions, including severance benefits informed by local laws.
Bethesda remains one of the key pillars of Xbox with a strong portfolio of amazing games and thriving communities. As we look to the future, there is an impressive line-up of games on the horizon. In 2024 alone we have Starfield Shattered Space, Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and The Elder Scrolls Online’s Golden Road. As we align our plans and resources to best set ourselves up for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams across Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well-positioned to build new IP, explore new game concepts, and expand on our existing franchises.

343i should have been the first studio Xbox to close. Not only 1, but 4 game flops, 1 tv series flop - within the 14 years they've existed.
Shinji actually wasn't in a leadership role at Tango, he was a "rank and file" employee. Shinji said it himself in an interview 2 weeks ago. Once Bethesda took over they removed his oversight role and gave him an Executive Producer title on games but he was hamstrung in implementing his vision for the company. It was even worse when MS bought Bethesda. He stuck around because he wanted to help the team with games they had already began production on; TEW, Ghostwire, HiFi Rush. Once HiFi Rush was released, he left. He describes it all, just google his name, the interview is from 2 weeks ago. Shinji wants to mentor the next generation of Japanese game development, he's been saying it for years but corporate keeps mucking it up. Hopefully his current studio stays independent and can remain solvent.

I remember Phil Spencer harping on about how he's going to get way more Japanese support for the Xbox.. And that made me hyped for the possibility of a remaster of the JRPG master piece Lost Odyssey, one of the best games on the Xbox 360. It only made sense to release that game again and give it the chance it deserves or even a sequel. That never happened of course and neither did a surge of Japanese games on the Xbox. And here we are today with Xbox axing one of it's very few Japanese developers. Phil Spencer is a full of crap. Don't believe a single damn word he says.
I mean you can still buy Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon on the Xbox store. Those games wouldn't sell well on Xbox even with the remastered treatment.

I just picked up 6 PlayStation games yesterday and I’m getting a PS5 next week once I’m home from college. I’m getting into the PlayStation ecosystem for the first time, and now this happens. I still play my Xbox a lot because I have a lot of games on it, but the lack of good exclusives and the awful management at Microsoft just sucks. I wish Xbox had more than maybe 3 good exclusives since the Series X launched

Honestly, this does not make me happy, XBOX always had so many chances to bounce back and be actual competition to PlayStation and Nintendo, and the fact they brought this upon themselves means that either they revamp their leadership entirely, or more companies under XBOX (I doubt Activision Blizzard will tbh) will fall

I’m an Xbox fan through and through but Phil needs to be let go or at the very least demoted to a much lower position in the company. His so called “savior” period has long since expired and we need someone fresh to come in and take his place and do a serious restructuring of how things are handled cuz he clearly doesn’t know how to do it. I’ve personally as an Xbox fan never really liked him and though he always looked a little smug whenever he walked on stage for an event. Hopefully whoever his successor is can get this company back on track but they need to know what they’re in for considering the almost impossible position he’s put his successor in.

Second Microsoft makes a lot of money every year, but not the xbox division. Azure, office365 and in general enterprise part of the company does. Xbox probably still didn't make back the OG investment from Bill Gates days. We know OG XBOX was a money sink they still lost money on 360, because of the red ring of death. Kinect was canned and early Xbox one days were an epic fail. Maybe they made some of that money back on Xbox Series era, but clearly not enough for a company like Microsoft.
I think what a lot of people didn't understand. Also in the first place is that the whole reason why Microsoft corporate got into video games was because Sony a multimedia company was dominating the gaming space and then started with PlayStation 2 And their successor PlayStation 3. Introduce their other businesses into their gaming sector. Microsoft thought at the time that set top boxes dominating the living room would be the future of where computing is and thus where the money is. They invested and ungodly amount of money and continue to do so to make sure that they won that. The problem is even if we ignore the failure, that is the Xbox One. By the time that machine came out, it was very obvious that Microsoft and Sony miscalculated and the real money were all the tiny super computers on people's phones, which small companies compared to these two Titans. At the time, Apple and Google were already embedded into and it exploded and now basically Apple and Google are the new Microsoft and Sony and thus Microsoft missed their opportunity. Tried to briefly make their own phones and mobile operating systems but they were too late and the market was already gobbled up by the smaller now Titan competitors. So now that the Microsoft gaming division is not their spearhead into the future of computing where the profits will be, the overall company doesn't give a shit about them anymore. And that's why they seem to focus on them less. I will honestly not be surprised if we get a report leaked or not. That Microsoft is probably cutting and tightening all their other divisions because they're probably dumping all their money in research into their two biggest money makers right now which is cloud and ai. And right now they are especially treating AI as the way they treated video game entertainment set-top boxes. They see it as the future and they want to be there before everyone else gets in so they can get the biggest pieces of the pie and be to ai what apple is to smartphones.

MS just hunts for ways to use highly-paid, highly-talented developers. They let Redfall, Hi-Fi Rush and soon Hellblade 2 with highly-paid talent at the helm come out then they will fire them. They use the talented to try to build the Xbox name but when it’s time to show loyalty and continue to pay them well, they gut them instead for the CEOs and shareholders who make nothing. When great things happen to xbox Phil Spencer always gets the praise but when bad happens its not up to Phil Spencer he is the head of xbox he may not be the only guy that makes decision but he is a big part of it. Xbox needs new leadership from top to bottom

That's not really true at all. Nadella doesn't even know that they have a Xbox division. Microsoft is such a massive company and the video game stuff is such a speck of sand in it's overall empire that to think the top brass knows or cares about any of this is hilarious. It's just you guys refuse to look at Phil critically for anything, the Xbox fanbase has always been this way. No matter the screw up, you guys always twist and turn around and always find ways to blame someone else because Phil is a "gamer" he wears a t-shirt rather than a suit and tie just like me. Xbox will keep being shit until there is change, until everyone wakes up that looking like a "gamer" isn't a substitute for good sense.
@@ericp631it was actually revealed back in January that the gaming division was their third largest business. It surpassed Windows for a time but now Windows is back on top. Phil Spencer/leadership just have no idea what they’re doing. That’s the issue. Nobody knows what Microsoft’s strategy is here, we as gamers don’t know and clearly Xbox leadership doesn’t either

I get what they're doing here. They're basically handling all of the aquired studios like contractors. They buy them, they wait until their projects are finished and then they get rid of them. Since Ninja Theory and Machine Games have thier projects released this year, I guess they will be on the list for next years closures.

Studios will be closed as a short term cost reduction. They just buy some other studio if they want someone to make them a new game.

Dude there’s like 5-6 exclusives on the ps5 that are not ports or remasters. Even the ps3 which started off slower had more games on its 2-3rd year. Same for xbox phil has been saying since the xbox one era that the games are coming. This gen has been the worst. i have a series x and while I enjoy it’s a glorified backwards compatible machine. Haven’t bought a ps5 yet not only because it’s bulky, there’s no games That interest me there either. I have played most of the exclusives that interest me from the ps1-ps4. gamepass was a great value until they nerfed the conversion rate. Now all I do is buy keys when they’re super cheap on gamivo or eneba lol
