Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.
Alpha Dog Studios, maker of mobile game Mighty Doom, will also close. Roundhouse Games will be absorbed by The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios. Microsoft did not say how many staff will lose their jobs, but significant layoffs are inevitable. IGN has asked Bethesda and Microsoft for comment.
On Redfall, the disastrous vampire co-op game will now not receive promised updates as Microsoft has ended all development on the game. Microsoft said Redfall will remain online to play, and it will provide a "make-good" offer for those who bought the Hero DLC.
Arkane Lyon, which is working on Marvel's Blade, survives the cull, as does Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Starfield), and Machine Games (Indiana Jones and The Great Circle). Doom developer id Software is also unaffected.
In an email to staff sent by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft blamed the cuts on a “reprioritization of titles and resources”. The email, verified by IGN, is below:
Today I’m sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.
To double down on these franchises and invest to build new ones requires us to look across the business to identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success. This reprioritization of titles and resources means a few teams will be realigned to others and that some of our colleagues will be leaving us.
Here are the changes going into effect:
Arkane Austin - This studio will close with some members of the team joining other studios to work on projects across Bethesda. Arkane Austin has a history of making impactful and innovative games and it is a pedigree that everyone should be proud of. Redfall’s previous update will be its last as we end all development on the game. The game and its servers will remain online for players to enjoy and we will provide make-good offers to players who purchased the Hero DLC.
Alpha Dog Studios - This studio will also close. We appreciate the team’s creativity in bringing Doom to new players. Mighty Doom will be sunset on August 7 and we will be turning off the ability for players to make any purchases in the game.
Tango Gameworks - Tango Gameworks will also close. We are thankful for their contributions to Bethesda and players around the world. Hi-Fi Rush will continue to be available to players on the platforms it is today.
Roundhouse Games - The team at Roundhouse Games will be joining ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS). Roundhouse has played a key role in many of our recent game launches and bringing them into ZOS to work on The Elder Scrolls Online will mean we can do even more to grow the world that millions of players call home.
With this consolidation of our Bethesda studio teams, so that we can invest more deeply in our portfolio of games and new IP, a small number of roles across select Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will also be eliminated.
Those whose roles will be impacted will be notified today, and we ask that you please treat your departing colleagues with respect and compassion. We will provide our full support to those who are impacted in today’s notifications and through their transitions, including severance benefits informed by local laws.
Bethesda remains one of the key pillars of Xbox with a strong portfolio of amazing games and thriving communities. As we look to the future, there is an impressive line-up of games on the horizon. In 2024 alone we have Starfield Shattered Space, Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and The Elder Scrolls Online’s Golden Road. As we align our plans and resources to best set ourselves up for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams across Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well-positioned to build new IP, explore new game concepts, and expand on our existing franchises.

Honestly, I think they wanted these studios for the top tier franchises (Examples: Activision for Call of Duty, Bethesda for Fallout and King for Candy Crush, etc, etc) and everything else from those studios is expendable stuff (in their eyes / their crappy opinions) that they don't care about.

It took their most direct competitor flubbing the launch of the PS3 for them to be competitive in the sole console generation they were. There just isn't room for 3 major home consoles in the market. Not really ,it's just the money philosophy that only US companies are obsessed with, you can play Nintendo, Capcom , Atlus, Fromsoft , so many JP studios who care about the product itself are still good and kicking. Korean is also booming , they even start to shift from mobile games market to quality console games because of the success of recent releases

Yep. Backwards compatibility has been the main selling point for me. I’ve been an Xbox fan since 2010 with the 360, and the main reason I got an Xbox One and Series X is backwards compatibility. I also love the Switch but I’ve never owned a PlayStation. I’m actually picking up a PS5 sometime next week once I’m back from college. I already picked up Spider-Man PS4, Miles Morales, Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, God of War 2018, and The Last of Us Remastered

Exactly my same situation. Last gen, Xbox was my go-to console. I only bought exclusives for my PS4. This gen, I'm team Sony all the way! I only use my XSX for my backlog which is seldom now since there're so many great games to play on PS5. I might pick up Hellblade 2 tho which is funny cus the first game was a originally a PS4 exclusive.
Hellblade 2 is a minigame. It is going to disappoint a lot of people simply for the fact it is not a full length game. Why didn't they make a full length game for such an anticipated title?
It’s not much different compared to the original length-wise. And it doesn’t seem like it’s super-hyped up by Xbox. If you liked the original, you’ll like the second. I respect Xbox for not making a 40hr game with voices in your head.

It’s made for hellblade fans and let me tell you 40 hours of hellblade would not be fun just because of what it is unless you like hearing voices for 40 hours. I do like the game though hellblade 1 is amazing so we just need a more refined version of the first with a new story and I’m 100% here for it

I have a pc n the only time I use gamepass because of the free trial on the asus ally rog. I only beat 2 games during that time
I either own most of the good games that was already on gamepass or didn't feel like playing mid games when I better games to play. Time is limited n throwing 1000s of games on gamepass there is not enough time in the world to play them. Bloating content is not excited for me.

@@kevinrodriguez9701 One company buying a subsidiary from a competitor is nearly impossible. Most companies would rather see smaller divisions or branches die than sell them. Notice how many times publishers shut down studios rather than try to sell them to another publisher. The only time this doesn't happen is when the parent company really needs the money. Microsoft doesn't need the money.

Im just going to say this right now.....Im not picking hellblade 2 up bc its a digital only title. I didnt do it with Alan Wake 2 (big fan of the original) and Im not doing it with this game. I just dont buy digital only games.
Also, there is no chance in Hell Nintendo and PlayStation would let Tango go, the reason why Nintendo and PlayStation have such amazing studios is they foster and grow talented studios into world class studios and have done this for over decades.
The funny thing is Microsoft has to make these acquisitions precisely because they, unlike Sony or Nintendo, don't have the dev talent and IP that would get consumers to buy Xbox products and services.
The best thing they could do is get new leadership who won't let the IP deteriorate like Phil has.

If we were in the 90's another company would see this as and opportunity to compete, and we would all be talking about this brand new console, but the business has become such a monster that this is very unlikely today.
Hardware and consoles were naturally going to get dominated by Sony and/or Microsoft thanks to how they own much of the underlying tech that goes into consoles.
The bigger issue I think is game development is too bloated. Cyberpunk 2077 must have cost like 10s of millions extra to make just to have Keanu in the game.

Xbox goes away PlayStation will have zero competition. That would lead to an even worse state than the gaming industry is in now. There needs to be a competitive console to keep hardware prices down. Xbox overspent underperformed and is hemorrhaging money. Rather than lay off all these employees and close these studios they should have them start porting every profitable title they have to PlayStation.

The problem isn’t Microsoft specifically, it’s capitalism. Our economic system prioritizes executives and shareholders over workers and consumers. Video games are art, capitalism doesn’t understand art, the workers need protection, a union is needed in the industry. Laws should be made to prevent this from happening, it’s gross the state of the industry. If workers are protected the consumers will benefit

personal take. I feel they stopped spending on marketing, because they found it wasn't bringing back in what they spent. If a game is on GP, it's gonna have low sales if any. If it's not a "staple" "high impact" game it's not generating new subs.

GP I think is part of their problem. Sony doesn't put current releases on their equivalent service.
Alot of it is Xbox's reputation has been bad for the last decade. They've had too many high profile flops and underwhelming releases whereas Sony has been putting out quality releases consistently.
And to your point, who is the Xbox audience beyond the Forza and Bethesda crowd at this point? They've eroded the audience they can market to overtime through poor decisions by Phil and others to not focus on IP.

I have no clue. The only thing I buy from Microsoft is windows because they have a monopoly on that n xbox controller for pc. Everything else screw that. I will get hellblade 2 to show appreciation to the developers not a trillion dollar greedy corporation.
Sales matter. Microsoft got a taste with Sea of Thieves sales on the Playstation. Hellblade 2 has zero marketing because it's probably not good.

But this generation might turn out like the ps4 where Sony had a year where they didn't release a single first party game and then we got all the bangers on the back half of the ps4 console generation.

People are sick of Microtransactions. It's getting to the point where it's cheaper to race my car in real life over doing it in a game. That's why Indie games are kilning it. These AAA games are $70 to $250 for the base game then you have Season Passes, DLC, MT's, Battle passes and MMO's with $15 Monthly fees. It's just not worth it anymore for me and I was a diehard gamer who bought sometimes 3 $60 games a week in the Xbox 360 days.

I play only on PlayStation and Xbox. I have a foot in both and the green brand has been letting me down recently. There is a showcase in June but that momentum for me, personally, has tapered off.
The decision to close these studios may have been made by leadership above Phil. Insuring the current studios are safe is all on Phil.

Why are folk getting historical here, this is normal practice for any business acquisitions. They buy a business, see how it’s running, if it’s under performing, they make layoffs while keeping the best parts and consolidating. Microsoft have some smart folk working for them as do Sony and they recently laid off a few studios. Both companies will survive at least another decade. While I think Xbox is being total asses, I also think people are genuinely not understanding the purpose of their acquisitions. Zenimax was purchased for Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Doom and Wolfenstein; Arkane and Tango? Those were studios Xbox had to buy to get the others. They never had any faith or care in these "excess" studios, and have no desire to pump resources into them. So they're allowed to wither and die on the vine. We're gonna see the same with "excess" studios within Activision-Blizzard over the next few years, mark my words.

This isn't something exclusive to xbox. Large companies have been axing passionate devs for a long time. EA refusing to license alice to american mcgee whilst refusing to fund alice asylum then using the excuse its an important part of their library. Its pure greed honestly
I believe the death of E3 and other game events have been detrimental. E3 hype brought in numbers and had people buying games. They lost a lot of hype when they ended it…

Honestly, I never even heard of Hellblade until the sequel was announced. And I still don't know much about it. I know more about the sequel but that's not saying much :')

Yeah I totally agree, imo and from the perspective of investors laying off large groups of non profitable business segments is really good for future growth of the company. In some ways Xbox got better from these layoffs, it sucks and the executives are manipulative liars but this action improves xboxs profitability.

@@conor6436 well said, but let's not act like video games isn't a money business at the end of the day, profitability leads to game deals like Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth which are generation defining experiences for PlayStation and Co, but you make a very solid statement
Edit: and just to clarify, I am a Microsoft investor and have several shares because it's a fantastic stock to own and never owned an Xbox only PS and Nintendo, so I see things from both sides....investors love layoffs in this modern stock economy

@@SuperBloodborneMaker2 All investors care about right now is how they're going to make the 100 billion back that they've already sunk into the acquisitions of developers. They aren't going to endlessly acquire devs, fire entire studios and then keep on buying even more devs when they can't even get a return on the already large investment that they've made.

It's not just the big companies that are the issue. The whole gaming industry is kind of messed up right now. Even the players. I have never seen as much toxicity between PS5 and Xbox players as I have this year, it's pretty sick and then people like blow up these developers until they get their way with what they want from the games they play. I see the whole gaming industry going downhill real quick between all the toxicity and the lay offs.
XBOX needs to succeed. Not just for its sake, but for the industry! We need competition. Playstation, and Nintendo need competition!

Xbox will be around in gaming, just not as its own platform. Its main product will be Game Pass via PC or streaming. Xbox will publish games on PC, PS and Nintendo.

It’s disappointing yea, I would have definitely wanted an evil within 3. But I’m looking at the bigger picture. They literally grab all the best talent from those studios and moved them somewhere else before they closed down. You guys wanted bigger and better games for Xbox right? Ima wait for the showcase in June.
I remember back in 2016 and 2017 when Xbox along with EA stated that single player games are dead and people are just interested in online multiplayer games. Sony and Capcom proved them wrong big time that Xbox had gone mad purchasing studios and publishers to reinforce their library and challenge Sony in their field. In the end, Xbox tried to be PlayStation but they couldn’t hold that situation anymore and now they are snapping back to their old reality but with making only a few mega games and securing constant revenue.

Yup, no marketing for HellBlade 2. Look at Stelar Blade, a third-party, but they have ads, youtube videos etc. Even FF16 has their own launch event.
When a studio has already put 2 games out this generation like Tango that were both good if not great games, then it's clear you have an amazing studio on your hands that you can build into a world class studio. The potential of Tango was massive.
Cuz they do that in every other business... like Duke Power in NC would buy out other electric power companies amd the get ruin of them so they got ruin of competition. Been doing over 30 years.

I've owned Xbox consoles from the OG Xbox to the Series X, i've genuinely felt that the direction Xbox is going, is the worst i've seen. I played and completed Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice and was initially looking forward to Hellblade 2, but i won't pay full price for a digital game, i'll never own. I've no interest in subscription services, so Gamespass i never had an interest in, because i have a large back catalogue. I feel this will probably be my last Xbox console, because of how things appear to be going, the irony Playstation is hardly on fire either. But this generation so far, hasn't been great.

It appears to me that Microsoft/Xbox bought all of those studios because they were competition! They bought them to either use them to get a game on Gamepass and/or destroy their competitor!
