War, war never changes, as said by…uhh…Ron Pearlman? As far as a quote goes, it’s a great one to describe the console wars. Times where people were genuinely up in arms to passionately defend their purchases of a certain console by dissecting each of them in excruciating detail. For those who don’t understand the console war, it’s hard to paint a mental picture of what is essentially, gaming not for fun, or for a goal, but just to defend a company. The release of games were just sales numbers, review scores you could screenshot and show other people. All of this in an effort to say that a console, not a game or even an experience, was superior.
Getting back on topic, this tale stretches back into the nineties. Sega versus Nintendo set the stage for what a console war is, with each company outright insulting the other in advertisements to get you, the consumer, to buy their product. Inevitably, this console war brought about innovation between these companies because the companies themselves were fighting on the front lines with each other. Nintendo, obviously, didn’t have to do much work by having a large amount of the “popular games” to play on their console, but SEGA put in work to popularize phrases like blast processing, which then made Nintendo respond by “debunking” it. This bickering was made especially funny years down the road because commonly, many people didn’t think blast processing was actually a real thing, it really was just a marketing buzzword to get people to buy the genesis. And it would almost be as funny as the truth if it just ended there, but blast processing does exist, and it’s a very real feature, that not a single shipped Genesis game ever used. This entire list, not one of them, ever used it.
In a more recent era most people know “the console wars” as Sony vs Microsoft, the Xbox vs Playstation. These two titans duke it out on the frontlines of consumer store shelves, while Nintendo just kinda does their own thing. All of this began in the early 2000’s, with Sony releasing the PS2, and it quickly becoming the best selling console ever made, a title it still holds to this day. The Playstation 2 was secretly, not so secretly, meant to step on Microsoft’s toes by competing with home computers, something Microsoft noticed, so they decided to respond with the Xbox, and the Rock. And even with the help of my baby (show stryxo videos mentioning halo count), Microsoft managed to make it 21st on the list of best selling consoles. It didn’t exactly dethrone the PS2, but what it did was a carve a space in the console market for Microsoft to dominate, especially when Microsoft released Xbox Live, which while not the first ever online option for a console, it was the only one to include things like, a friends list, a gamertag that sticks with you in every game, and voice chat. Maybe that one was a mistake, but you get what I mean.
The late 2000’s brought forth a surge of renewed energy towards a console war between Sony and Microsoft, except this time the front line of this war wasn’t fought by the companies. The companies were playing Cold War, they’re not buying advertisements to all over another console, instead they were letting the studios they owned or the games that released do the talking for them. - Hry

The whole console wars thing never appealed to me, even as a kid because I've always been very passionate about gaming that isolating myself to just one brand feels like a very dumb and pointless thing to do.
For me, it was about combating the isolation. If somebody preferred Genesis to Super Nintendo, they simply weren't aware of how good the SNES was.
I can at least kind of understand how kids would get caught up in something like that, but grown men...

@@OrgaNik_Music I can understand if you're a kid your parents buy you one console you want to feel like you're not missing out on the others. Even as a kid i wanted the others to play more different games and newer experiences. I've always been a fan of Nintendo IP. I got a Gamecube as a kid but than eventually saved up for a PS2 because I wanted to play some of those games like Gran Turismo and FFX, than the OG Xbox came out I fell in love with its PC influence because I used to play some Age of Empires 2 on PC and Diablo 2. Also Splinter Cell and Ninja Gaiden were FIRE!
Had I pledged some sort of a pointless allegiance to one console manufacturer I would've missed out on so many awesome experiences.
The only thing I see being relevant is only having one console because of money.
And what annoys me is when your favorite multiplatform game gets a bad port on the system that you bought.
I'll never understand why a grown ass man in his 30s would care about console wars.

I got to experience both Metal Gear Solid (PS1) and Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64) when they released two months apart in the Fall of 1998. It was at that moment I knew that life was too short for console wars.

@@riston7264 We didn't know how good we had it! Zelda had lots of previews and hype but MGS was almost a surprise hit, nothing could prepare us for the first fully voice acted game that felt like a movie.
Funny enough Ocarina of Time was the one N64 game I was waiting for and the one I never played. I grew bored and frustrated with the lack of games releasing on the N64. Going to FuncoLand and looking around there was tons of games on PS1 I wanted to play. Eventually I traded in the N64 and got the PS1 and Final Fantasy 7. Stopped caring about brand loyalty and console wars after that. Just get whatever looks fun.
I got to play Elden Ring and Zelda TotK this year, I don't see why I would want to miss out on any of these masterpieces over a nonsense console war or PC masterrace blabla.

Edit: I still do play on PlayStation so we never compromised our friendship really, and I guess it was two at the time middle schoolers thinking like this rather than depressed dudes on social media.

There was a PlayStation fanboy who was in arguments with Xbox fanboys. He was a doctor and would tell them this. The boys weren’t having it so this Sony Pony decided to RECORD himself while at work.

The 360 vs ps3 wars were truly wild. I remember being a diehard ps3 fanboy mainly because its online services were free and it had superior hardware. Looking back at it, it's all just a disgusting marketting ploy, and the real crime is that we were deprived of crossplay for so long and I couldn't play halo with my fellow xbots.
Who knew it would’ve been Fortnite to save us from the walls of crossplay 💀

For years we waited for a mainline console Pokémon. And when it came out it was the worst thing that ever happened to the franchise. And it's never really recovered. It sold fine because of course it did but look at the state of Pokémon now. It's a laughing stock.

Nintendo is firmly out of the console wars. They have won the youth market and they're never losing it as far as I can see, and they have loyal legions of adult Nintendo fans that will buy anything their go-to series puts out, I assume, for as long as they live. Now all that's left is Xbox and PlayStation fighting for what shrinking number of older gamers aren't migrating to PC.
They didn't really win the youth market, cause between 13 and 20 you're mostly like "I am not a kid anymore, I want to play CoD on Xbox/PS" and then at 20/30/40 you realise these games are full of teenagers and playing the new Mario is infinitely more fun
The Youth market! Idk if you know how many adults especially adult women love switch games and the accessibility of it. They even changed up switch marketing to be more young adult focused (18-22) when the switch launched cause when they last marketed to kids/families it didn’t work (wiiU) I love my switch and am planing to mod it and bring its clock speeds to the normal amount for the chips inside (they underclock everything for power saving) I also have no want to get a ps5 or Xbox series since most of the big budget games come to pc where I have a 3080 so I can run pretty much anything. The only reason I would want a ps4 is Spider-Man or demon souls. But I will just use an emulator to play the original demon souls on my pc with mods to make it 60fps and maybe some texture improvements.

I think it can still be fun in a causal/friendly rivalry way. But when it gets to the point of lying about game score and seriously thinking others are wrong to buy a different piece of overpriced technology. Well, it’s gone too far.
I bought my PS3 because the online was free (mostly Destiny), then I bought my PS4 specifically for Bloodborne, earned some trophies and said "well, I guess this is me now".

yeah, i've already spent way too much time on twitter. and i did involve in some arguments. but they were not about consoles - i like all the platforms and wanna collect more after some time. they were about the game i spent 6 times more time in than any other game - geometry dash. basically, there is a biggest update that ever was and will be coming, so some ppl are complaining about physics changes. and i respond them that most players don't care

I like the console wars, not because I want to prove a point, but just because it's interesting to analyse what companies did well or less so, and why that is. Plus it's cool to see the history.
This. Each company excels in so many ways and falls short in so many ways too. I like it as a healthy competition but it really has become a toxic debate since the Xbox One and PS4 launch.

Great video! I would like to add on a little story of my own.
From my knowledge, the very very first "console wars" were between magnavox and atari. Long story short, atari "ripped off" magnavox in some way so they sued, atari caved, but magnavox basically died the very next console generation, and has become only known by nerds or people who read comments like these, while atari basically became the start of the video game legacy.
As a kid I was a passionate Xbox fanboy. As I got older I got a PS4 after not liking the Xbox One and loved it. Then i got a Switch in 2018 and I realized as an adult that they are all great

I think the last time console wars really mattered was the 7th gen. After that (and even _in_ that gen), consoles just became so similar that it didn't matter which one you bought, we were all doing the exact same thing with them (unless you owned a Nintendo console).
Wii owners were stuck with (often forced) waggle controls, PS2 graphics, and the worst online service ever (til the Switch came out).

Switch Online is considered to be terrible when compared to literally every other online service that has existed since 2005 with the Xbox 360.
The only other online services that are close to being as feature and stability deficient as NSO would be other Nintendo platforms (although in some ways some of them actually had more features, a lot even - even if they mostly sucked anyway, there was at least an effort, which we certainly aren't getting with NSO ).
If you’re buying a Nintendo console, it’s just the assumption that online isn’t great and that the graphics aren’t great. It’s not like anyone expects them to acutely be good at that stuff

I was way too young during the Xbox 360/PS3, which is why I don’t recall console wars back then, I was too busy playing the Halo games that released during that time, wasn’t witnessing passive aggressive/trash talking replies in the comment section, but all we can do is just laugh and it right?
This is one of the reasons why I left the gaming community. Is there any benefit to fighting? When I see them even making threats, I just sigh.

Yes, fighting for your gaming ideals, I don’t participate in these console wars much but I have picked a side and that side is Nintendo, it stems from them being the only traditional video game company left and their games speak to me more than PlayStation and Xbox games.

I did enjoy the console war stuff as a kid. It was fun arguing about dumb things. Then when a friend got a particular game like Halo, Devil May Cry, or Smash Brawl, NOW suddenly everybody switches which console is the best and we all want to play at their house until the next big game 😅.

I admit to being into the console wars when I was in middle school. Half the boys in my grade were, and they'd have arguments about it all the time in the restooms and in the cafeteria. It's pretty forgivable for kids to do that, it was a harmless way to pass the time and it's one of the few issues they have to worry about. It's pretty sad to see so many fully grown men (and I'll assume a few women) take part in it. They're not accomplishing anything, and they make it harder to talk about games with other people online.

All I can say is I've got Game Pass PC, a PS4 with most exclusives available on it, and a switch, and I use all 3 regularly
It’s not a console war anymore it’s a content war
I remember my first time switching to PC. There was no war. Everyone is super friendly. No monthly subscription required. The game discounts are amazingly cheap. Everyone is super social and wants to play together. Despite my first PC purchase was a gaming laptop with a GTX 1650, the performance was still really good. My next upgrade was an RTX 3080, CPU i7 12th gen with a motherboard with wifi 6. Man, that PC ran games as smooth as butter. I have play on every console version of Playstation and Xbox and I love several games on both. The console wars is a waste of breath.
Console wars are dumb, but from a consumer standpoint it actually breeds healthy competition. Ever since the disastrous Xbox One release, Sony hasn't really needed to try that hard. The PS5 is even $500, a pricetag that supposedly hurt the Xbox One, while the Series S is over $100 less and even has game pass as a huge selling point. Even then, PS5 absolutely dominates and puts Xbox to shame. There is no console war anymore, Nintendo is off being Nintendo, and now Sony gets to play on easy mode.

The console wars was something I had no concept of growing up. By the time I was 14-15, I’d owned at least one console from every manufacturer, and I had played games on every platform - Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, PC. Hell, I think I might’ve experienced the Dreamcast over at my old friend’s house, so I even squeezed Sega in there too.
Same goes for things like mascot platformers. Mario VS Sonic? Crash VS Spyro? I had all four of them.

I agree that people who are fueling the console wars are usually under the age of 15, but the console war itself is actually really good for the consumers, because xbox, ps, and nintendo will try even harder, and make better games so they can compete. (the downside is the studio crunch but that's an another thing)
Unfortunately that's not how it works anymore.
Both Xbox and Playstation release unfinished broken games well below standards we expect. They don't push each other to do better anymore, those days died back when the Console Wars died, in like 2013. Now, it's just bickering and useless jabbing "Oh you're buying a company? Let me delay that in court as long as I can just to spite you" is the new stauts quo.

If we simply take any random third party titles then we have to accuse Nintendo for Mortal Kombat being bad on their console or having microtransactions which is just silly.
Also the vast majority of first party PlayStation titles aren't filled with microtransactions ether. Where do you see microtransactions in any of the titles i mentioned? The biggest guilty is probably GT7 and is still not pay to win and still has everything available threw gameplay.
This is just funny as hell, you left PlayStation angry because of third party developers that have nothing to do with PlayStation. If you are gonna be angry at PlayStation at least be for something valid.

Maybe it wasn’t a PlayStation exclusive game, but the fact still remains that Sony too focused on their crappy live service and their games are over the complicated and clunky, the biggest reason is Sony has forgotten what made them so successful. Where is Nintendo is the only traditional gaming company left and I’m a traditionalist I never cared about 4K graphics. I care about gameplay and access with you and none of PlayStation games are really accessible to newcomers. Where as the Nintendo games are more fun.

Personally, I just bought the series S because it’s a pretty good price for the power you get out of it. I’m enjoying my experience. I had a switch too but I gave it away to my friend, I just wasn’t enjoying it like I used to.
Nowadays it's really less about box vs box but two different visions of the market/industry future.
The Playstation (and somewhat Nintendo) guys are more favorable to the status quo with full price gaming in a varied industry while the Xbox (and somewhat PC) guys champion all digital, subscription services and industry consolidation.

Remember when console wars used to be a friendly competition. Those were the good old days at the time. Sadly it’s all about harassing people on “X” for playing on a inferior console. All I ever want is to have fun. No matter which console I’m playing at.
For real gamers it was NEVER about who has the most teraflops, the best GPU or whatever. And some gaming companies have never understood this.

I was just thinking about the days before cross platform play, and it was always so disheartening to have your mind set on a console, just find out all your friends got the other and you couldnt play together
While my xbox 360 did red ring when playing L4D, the PS3 I bought also decided to die when playing Thief 3 so I really never thought one was better than the other. Now I'm afraid to even turn them on with them being out of warranty.

Moving to PC in 2016 was like retiring from the war. It felt great and it feels even better now having access to xbox titles and Sony titles on one machine.

Console wars kinda stopped meaning anything when people started being able to emulate gba, nds and PlayStation consoles well.
There’s a large library of old games that aren’t immoral to emulate since copies are no longer being sold.

One thing I can complement PlayStation on, as an Xbox player, without bias is their willingness to experiment more with their hardware; like putting a touch pad and haptic feedback into the controller or having VR headset accessory.
True. As a PS player. Xbox outshine us when it comes to their subscription package. Both companies charge the same (Maybe PS more now cause of the price rise) yet both are so different in terms of quality.
However making us pay for online is something both companies need to fix ASAP.

The shoe is on the other foot. I haven't bought a game on consoles for years thanks to GP. Now with the merger and exclusives like elder scrolls it's a done deal.
Same I've gone back to PC. I have every playstation up until the PS4 and this generation was legit the first I did not feel much of a need to buy into. I might get a PS5 eventually to round off the collection but I'm at least waiting until the homebrew scene fully kicks off.
