Square Enix has announced a significant company reboot amid tumbling profits.
Reporting its financial performance for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, sales in the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes video games, rose by 2.6% but profit fell by 15.8%. This despite the sale of Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Foamstars, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Specifically on HD games, the subcategory Square Enix uses to encompass all the above games, the company saw a significant operating loss of ¥8.1 billion (approximately $51.9 million).
Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth both launched as PlayStation 5 exclusives, and while Square Enix has announced a sales figure for Final Fantasy 16, it has yet to do so for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the company’s trilogy of Final Fantasy 7 remakes. In its financial report, all Square Enix would say is it has suffered from an “incomplete journey to better profitability in HD game development”, and that it had “launched many titles but some failed to live up to profit expectations, especially outsourced titles and some AAA titles.” It seems likely Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, at least, is included in that. - Hry

I agree. It'll at least keep them afloat longer. I think it'll help. Will it save them in this world economy? Who knows?
How does it feel Sony pony cry more
I was wondering when someone was going to come and say Sony pony or PlayStation fan boy. Well there shouldn't be games exclusive to any platform not on xbox or PlayStation or Nintendo or pc I've got a PlayStation 5 Nintendo Switch and xbox series x so if there's a game that's exclusive to those consoles then I can get them if i like them but there shouldn't be any exclusives at all
@@BlueAndWhiteAreRight 😂 that is all this guy does he would have to shut down his channel if there was no PlayStation exclusives
Thoughts and prayers with you in these harrowing times
Good decision if it wasn’t made five years too late
@keeptv1918 maybe so but I feel this will be a good move for the future endeavors
Agreed. Reaching more people with your IPs is much more healthy long term than reaching less and getting paid for that to offset that. They should have done this way earlier.
Restricting these big third party games to one platform was a huge mistake.
Better late than never I say. As long as we never go all digital, idc!
Except it was. Correct me I'm wrong, but weren't FF13 and FF15 day and date on Xbox 360 and Xbox One?
Didn’t FF8, 10, 12, Octopath Traveller and the KH2 HD collection came to Gamepass?
The thruth is that Xbox has never been a profitable market for Square Enix, and their real problem was all of their AAA games missing out on the Nintendo fanbase because the Switch 2 is taking so long to come out.
FF isn't normie enough to be exclusive and expect big sales. The audience is definitely there, but it's across all platforms.
Right. It doesnt really appeal to the casuals. Just its hardcore fanbase. Now granted, Final Fantasy has one of the bigger fanbases, but its still niche compared to a Call of Duty or GTA.
That’s not it. The problem is that Sony, The Game Awards and a few other players led the industry and the therefore the consumer to a Notion that only narrative, high fidelity graphics, AAA games are worth. Now they are paying for their own mistake. Ppl are more demanding, AA games don’t have space anymore.
Nintendo is one of the very few companies that still focus on gameplay first, and that’s why they make do much money.
Square honestly over-estimates how "causal" Final Fantasy is tbh. Even with FF7, that game doesn't mean as much to Gen Z and the modern casual audience as Square thinks. The Remake series is doing well enough, but the first FF7R sold around 7 million (As of 2023), which is around the same as Persona 5, and Persona 5 only just went multi plat in 2022.
This series just isn't as big as Square thinks. It's big, don't get me wrong, but it's not THAT big with casuals.
SE will figure it out pretty fast that there is no money making on the Xbox platform. Xbox gamers simply do not buy games. Especially not JRPGs. SE will have to expand on PC and especially Nintendo. But Xbox nahh...not worth it at all.

Square Enix I so want a remake of " Parasite Eve "🙏🙏🙏
It sadly probably won’t happen cuz it’s a logistical nightmare since they don’t technically own the rights to the series as that’s owned by the author of the original novel Hideaki Sena so remaking the first game would involve jumping through a bunch of hoops which I don’t think Square Enix would want to do again. Now they can make a new game under the name 3rd Birthday since they own characters like Aya Brea since they made her but they can’t use characters like Eve.

Sony have lost many games over time including the Yakuza and Persona series. The Dark Souls games were even going to be a Sony exclusive, but after Sony funded Demon Souls , they complained the game was to hard and wasn't accessible enough. After that FromSoft did their own thing.
Exactly cuz when Persona 3 Reload was being advertised it was mainly the Xbox trailers for it that were being advertised where it only mentions that it’s coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and GamePass meaning the PS5 port was hardly advertised in comparison to the Xbox and PC ports. I think this is due in part to Microsoft having a stronger relationship with SEGA seeing as a bunch of SEGA employees went to go work at Microsoft after the Dreamcast failed.
Are you for real? You know that Sony owns a stake in FromSoft right.

You know that sales numbers of Persona and Yakuza series are outrageously bad on Xbox right? Just saying.
Square Enix has a serious financial mismanagement problem. The fact that they sold the Tomb Raider IP for so cheap because they "couldn't make it profitable" says a lot.
That’s because they allowed Crystal Dynamics to have bloated budgets cuz each game costed over 100 million dollars to make and when Rise of the Tomb Raider was coming out they asked Microsoft to help cover some of the costs for that game which was why it was an Xbox 360/Xbox One exclusive for a year and both them and Crystal Dynamics said that no one wanted Remasters well guess what both were wrong and the Remasters are hugely profitable cuz they only costed a couple 100,000 dollars to make and on Steam alone within the first 2 weeks of launching it made 2.9 million dollars (profits from the other consoles or PC stores but I imagine it did really well on those systems as well).
@@Wingedlight-nn4hl Agreed, doing a Tomb Raider Trilogy Remaster for the PS5/XBSX launch would have been a layup, but instead they sold an iconic IP for scraps

Square Enix cancelled a lot of games in development and this led them to lose 140 million in money spent in development this news came out a couple of days ago. To be fair, Final Fantasy games at least in Japan have sold less and less in recent times. Dragon Quest also didn't sell like back in the ps1 and ps2 glory days. Square Enix also lost a ton of money on all the live service games they made that failed and also on Forspoken. Making all their future games release on everything might help but I think the main problem is Square Enix. Maybe with the Switch 2 you will have Square Enix making a lot of money but who knows.
Companies should finance complety the developpement of a game if they want exclusivities if they dont own the studio.
50/50. On the one hand, they are opening up meaning people who care might by them.
On the other hand, MODERN GAMING, lately exclusives are almost a “seal of quality”. It’s no secret that developing for multiple platforms puts one closer to making mistakes AKA bugs.

@MightNight99 Switch 2 will be the lead development platform for SE going forward, mark my words. It's easier to port up than to port down. It really makes no sense to use the PS5 console as the lead console when it'll severely limit your ability to port and reach a bigger audience. Also, SE at the end of the day is a Japanese company and Japan is the land of Switch . PS5 is a niche platform in Japan and its install base limits SE's earning potential and mindshare in the homeland.

There are lots of variables but I think the problem lies in the fact that remains is that SE does not have strong enough IPs that can help push profits. FF is popular, but the brand it wasn't it was back in the days. And Dragon Quest games are seldom released. It wouldn't sell well with Nintendo. Title would have extreme performance issues. Square Enix is not good at optimization in their games. It's why their titles have muddy textures that make the visuals looks weird in certain areas of their titles.
They'll find a way, they have no choice but to.
@@EmissaryTheMessengerThe power level quote" of the console has in no relation to how well it would sell. By your logic, Final Fantasy would have sold gangbusters on GameCube and the original Xbox because they were literally light years ahead of PlayStation 2 Tech and yet Square not only sold exclusively to them but made bajillions of dollars because PlayStation 2 despite being a weak ass console sold the most. That's what the switch lineup currently is. The harsh reality is that in trying to combat Microsoft, Sony has basically lost their Japanese identity and when they sold off their Western studios they had no way to compete with other Western AAA games. Combined with because they stumbled so much during the 360 PS3 era that both dragon Quest and especially persona have now replaced Final Fantasy as the mainline jrpg games for Western audiences. The reality is that all Japanese players and the weebs and other countries that enjoy them are on Nintendo systems. If they want to actually sell they need to sell on the switch. Exactly why the games that made them the most gangbusters in money were the 1A deaths type games like octopath traveler on Nintendo switch. Not only because their budgets were manageable but because by unit comparison from cost of making the game to how much money they made, they literally made money hand over fist with those games. Yeah, and that was on the weak ass piss poor console now imagine something like the mainline Final Fantasy games on Nintendo which funny enough the direct ports of those games sell the best on the switch. Rebirth would have probably honestly sold like 5 to 8 million copies on the switch alone if it was released on that platform based on the fervor of Japanese consumers for that product. Also Xbox fans really want Final Fantasy as much as Nintendo cuz it was reported that ever since FF14 launched on Xbox it gained 2.5 million additional players who play regularly and pay for the subscriptions so we could see the next mainline FF game come to Xbox judging from that.

It's the most powerful console, and Square really likes targeting that high graphical fidelity that the Switch just frankly is not equipped to handle. And at the start of this console generation, the Switch was already old hardware.
But, after seeing middling and underperforming sales, seeing just how big the PC market truly is, and the final nail being that the leaks for the Switch successor being more powerful than a PS4, I think it makes sense to focus on multi platform games again. Square Enix had so many fantastic games on the PS4 that looked great. Even if the Switch successor is only as powerful as a PS4, that still opens the door for so many good games, titles, and overall experiences to be ported over.
Long story short, I don't blame Square Enix for trying to partner with another Japanese company that boasted about powerful hardware this generation. But I think it's just another case of proving that the console with the most powerful hardware is never the "winner" of that generation.
I have most SE games on Xbox or Switch anyway. I have a weird thing for playing the same games multiplatform. The thing that bugs me is Octopath 1 isn't on PS5 yet.
Screw squeenix, never shoulda disrespected Sakaguchis philosophy of what FF is when they butched the crap outa ff7
I cant wait to see the Squre is not happy with the sales, because now their next FF is a multiplat therefore their expectation is x10 times over ....i cannot wait !
So SE wont make exclusive games with Switch 2 too right?
3:58 😂😂 Well done matey 👊👊😁
If all you talk about PlayStation wins and Xbox losses why don’t you just call yourselves PlayStation guy
Dont appease to the casuals, dont dumb down the games for them. Appeal to the fans that made FF popular. Dont make it like devil may cry. Double down on exploration, story, good side quests and turn based and it will definitely sell better
Nostalgic BS.
@@KamiKoroshi_well, the "non-nostalgic" approach isn't working, is it? In fact, It damaged Final Fantasy brand for a lot of it's core fandom.
@@azulion That's a load of BS. You're blaming FF when it's games like Foamstars and mobile BS they been pushing. But keep using your lame excuses.
I love turn based RPGs. Good shout
@@KamiKoroshi_foamstars wasnt the issue multiplat was and mobile was w investment. octopath much
When will fanboys realize, it’s just business. PS losing exclusives not only to PC, which we were told would never happen, now they’re losing FF. The gaming world we grew up in no longer exists.
I worked at a Walmart overnight. It's not busy at all especially after 11 or 12
Perhaps all of their games be put on Steam. That will help their sales.
Maybe if they stop wasting money on NFT games and derivative trash they'll make money.
It's not just that. They've also been releasing far too many low budget titles
@@morriganrenfield8240you mean high budget low return
I think there lies a lot of the truth of the issue. I'm not sure if PS5 exclusivity is really the problem. Forspoken would have been a terrible game also as a multiplatform game and without Sony bankrolling much of the development, they would have had to make up for that amount as well. And there we have the main problem...without Sony's money, there is a lot of revenue lost and the risk becomes even higher. There is more development time because of multiple platforms, etc.
Square's problem is that they make some really good games and some really shitty games. And they are an extremely inefficiently run company. And nothing of that will change by doing more Multi-Platform releases. They will find themselves in the same pickle as they are now.
As much as it's right now, if there is a publisher that needs to trim some fat, it's Square Enix. If they could focus on what they are good at and stop making so much crap, they will be successful, be it multiplatform or exclusive or a mix of it.
Most important thing is gamers are not really buying their games anymore
If this is real, it's definitely great for everyone except Sony. Though I believe this isn't just a matter of exclusivity.
1. People have to remember that Square games used to be exclusive back in the day.
2. Current gen games are way more expensive than before and consumers need to prioritize which game to get first.
3. SE released several flops in the past years that may have affected some people's trust in the company.
4. Game fatigue. People just can't cope with the number of SE releases and game releases in general. Going back to my point #2.
5. Marketing. Because they have a lot of games, not all games were marketed properly.
6. Comparing Remake to Rebirth, Remake was released during the pandemic in which a lot of people had free time. It was also released at the peak of the PS4 lifecycle. Hence, more sales.
7. Also, this isn't the first time this happened. Look at FF XIII trilogy (and that was not exclusive) and other previous FF titles.
Pretty sure I'm forgetting some other reason but these are at the top of my head.
it just the game budget this gen just balloon to crazy height
They need Nintendo to sell in Japan.
Exclusivity is not the main issue. Square games are subpar for years now.
Still an issue
Hell no, Rebirth and 16 are great games. Some of their smaller titles have been great too.
The old ones back in the day used to be the best-looking games on the market, and that's not the case anymore and I have never played one, but my friends did and at the time nothing looked better. Today that's not going to work because there are many games that look and run better. Today market you need to sale game play, because you can get great graphics today if you want.
Also the Pixel Remasters are available cross platform. Mine are on the Switch.
They keep making ps3 games
Right. They have to understand that ppl expert more out of these games nowadays. Making games that play or feel like ps3 games ain't gonna cut it anymore, especially on ps5 hardware, And what is sad their not even utilizing the power of the ps5.
How is ff 7 rebirth a ps3 game?
How is FF16 a ps3 game ?? 🤔
@@kingineazzy Now that Square is going multiplat, you will witness the sony fanboys say things like "their games always sucked", despite claiming they were the best exclusives ever mere weeks ago
They should most definitely make their games for PC day one. It would be foolish not to. The amount of PC gamers I see complaining about that and vice versa as well.
if square enix wants to make money then put out more copys of final fantasy pixel for the ps4. almost 1.5k on ebay the game not even a year old.. where is FFXI classic? wow classic did huge number so could FFXI meanwhile sqaure enix loses more money.. they need a new ceo.
😂😂😂😂
Funny how this dude tone changed compared to last week😂🤡
When the multiplatform comes, people better buy their games (not only FF). But because we know people (specially on Twitter) they will celebrate to a point where they forget to actually buy games.
But lets keep pretending the problem are exclusives (both in Play and Switch) and not the NFTs push, Game as a service (Avengers, Foamstars and unforgiven Babylon's Fall), and releasing 15+ games a year (and from the same genre the majority)
Good! Maybe now Sony will start making a SERIOUS EFFORT to actually improving its own first party development, instead of relying on third parties to augment their own software lineup.
Square-Enix has to have one of the worst financial guys or board of directors. Every game they make has a ridiculous metric each game will never reach and we get the boilerplate “did not meet expectations”.
Well they lost money this year, The games cost more to make than the money they made back in sales.... I think that qualifies as not meeting expectations, given that they were on the PS5 which supposedly has the largest install base, yet no one bought it, sad
It's not about a crazy metric it's about profit and that's the issue
When a game console costs 600 bucks what do you expect
This is really good news they need to hire people if they want to release future games on multiplat.
Vhat's up gaybers
Sony censoring Stellar Blade messed up everything

Seeing Insomniac's hack, Sony's exclusivity to Xmen contract is based on the a set millions of sales to remain exclusive. Likely the FInal Fantasy games are also like such. FF7R must be selling much worse than we all could imagine for SE to come out to break the exclusivity contract.
Ff7r sales have already been public, it’s struggling to say the least
Every franchise is dcg's favorite franchise of all time
It's sad their latest FF games didn't sold more. Great and beautiful games made with heart. I guess for us, OG gamers (boomers, Gen X), our era is ending.
It has nothing to do with that and it as a older millennial born in 1987 who was a huge Final Fantasy fan when he was a kid. I can tell you where they lost interest. Began to lost interest around Final Fantasy X but I truly lost interest on Final Fantasy 13 and never recovered outside of playing around with Crystal Chronicles and some of the other spin-off titles. The reason is because not only are they bad games but the current final fantasy is not what I wanted. My uncle used to do work in Japan and he used to come back with the art books or the NES and SNES games. Looking at these amazing watercolor illustrations where you looked at it and you were like that's Final Fantasy. It's not a rip off of Lord of the rings. It's Final Fantasy. We're like the sky would be purple in the sun would be bred and it was just insane and all I kept thinking about was little kid. Was wow imagine this but like Pixar graphics I can't wait for that. Instead starting especially with 13. All we got was emo Belton zippers cuz they tried to make namora the miyamoto of the company. Not really turned me off. Never mind all the questionable gameplay decisions they've made between 13 and 15. During that era, basically other RPGs have surpassed them now especially I would say that for most people the persona series is to them what Final Fantasy 7 was to people back in the '90s. So Square enix needs to admit that one, even if they go multi-platform Final Fantasy is not going to make the numbers that it used to because the ball they dropped during PlayStation 3 is still haunting them and two that one console manufacturer is basically going third party and doesn't give a shit about Japanese games and then the other one is even worse because they are technically a Japanese company but had also closed down their Japanese studio and in trying to compete with their rival Microsoft also became incredibly Western. Means that especially when you look at the sales data of these games, they're going to have to bring a lot of their games to switch and PC because that's where the Japanese hardcore fans are. And that's where all the weebs that like Japanese shit are also.
@@jordanwhite352 I love FF13. It was the first trilogy I ever played of final fantasy. I then moved on to FF7 and 8. I also played FF6 and I now wish I was rich so I could buy and play FF10 & 10-2, the ff1-6, ff16 and the FF7 remake games. I love RPGs and I now absolutely love Final Fantasy. I played the trial version of one of the Dragon Quest games and I have Dragon Quest one, two and three on my switch. I love the graphical quality, the stories told in the games and the different gameplay mechanics brought into each game. I loved Kingdom Hearts too. Love anime and Disney (old Disney anyway).
This was exposed during the FTC vs Microsoft/Activision merger. Everyone knows that Sony buys exclusives when it comes to specific IP with any 3rd party developer. It's not surprising.
If the exclusives are not selling well enough, it means the platform's install base is not buying. When you are at the mercy of a single platform consumer base, you run that risk.
You run that risk regardless
Very cool thanks 💎💪🏽😉
