    If Crystal Dynamics wants a successful Tomb Raider game they need to return to form of what the originals (Core Design) had. The last three installments didn't feel like Tomb Raider and were honestly hitting the same notes story wise. My fear is that it's going to be a Uncharted Lost Legacy rip-off with some elements of a Ubisoft game as said in the video... But I'm keeping my optimism in check because it seems like these developers like to "rewrite" and alter these classic IPs.

    I whole heartedly disagree with his take on Rise. To me, Rise was dang near PERFECT , for where Tomb Raider should have been going. Tomb Raider IS THE ORIGINAL, not Uncharted which copied them. So in the ReBoot of Tomb Raider, while good, it was trying TOO HARD to be Uncharted. Rise is where they broke off and with all the extra additional Semi-Open world areas and increased Platform & Puzzle areas was a PERFECT blueprint of where Tomb Raider should have went. Then Shadow came out, was made by a completely different development team which it showed, and it just completely crapped the bed story wise in where they were going as she still never truly really "became the Tomb Raider". Like he said, (Spoilers) that scene where she came out the water STILL did not show her dawn an original like outfit, pick up a second pistol, and they didn't even commit to killing off the other main character for growth purposes. It's like they had NO CLUE where they wanted to go. I REALLY wish he would have finished Rise, it is definitely one of my favorite games of the genre ever, he should give it a second chance.

      Open World needs other elements to carry it. For Elden Ring, it's the Souls gameplay. For Genshin, it's the characters and ongoing events. For Zelda, it's mindless Nintendo fanboys who will defend any slop they're given and ask for more.
      And last I checked, Tomb Raider isn't known for Souls bosses, anime gacha stuff, or Nintendo fanboys. It will just be "Breath of the Wild except given fair reviews because it isn't a Zelda game", which means total crash and burn.

    • @PeanutButa0407
      @PeanutButa0407 Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@jaeusa160 So Tomb Raider has never been a game with mini-bosses, goofy characters or various other items that it's being compared to. It's intent has always been exploration, discovery and deep story. Minus the deep story, is what most open worlds have been. So to compare what once was and slightly still is a "Platform game" to something like Elden Ring is grossly misrepresenting the point.

    • @jaeusa160
      @jaeusa160 Před 3 měsíci

      @@PeanutButa0407 I don't think I'm missing the point here. I think my point is that Tomb Raider works by being a contained and meticulously crafted experience, long deep dives into insane puzzle dungeons, which get bigger over the game generations.

    I'm writing to you from Tamil Nadu, India. I recently heard about your upcoming Tomb Raider project set in India, and I'm incredibly excited! Tamil Nadu boasts a rich history filled with great kings, advanced technology for its time, and deep knowledge that extends far beyond the earthly realm, including our fascination with astrology and space. I'm confident you'll do an amazing job representing this in the game.
    While boomerangs aren't a common weapon in our region, a traditional martial art called Silambam (also known as Aadhi Muru) uses similar staff-based techniques. It would be fantastic to see this incorporated into the game alongside other unique fighting styles.
    Perhaps Lara could encounter ancient texts or artifacts that hint at this fascinating aspect of our culture, including references to the mythical Yali, a powerful creature often depicted guarding temples. Imagine Lara encountering a forgotten chamber adorned with Yali statues or even facing a formidable guardian inspired by this mythical beast.
    To truly immerse players in the experience, including a Nataraja statue, the embodiment of cosmic dance in Hindu culture, would be a powerful touch.
    Finally, as a humble request, making the game available in Tamil would be a dream come true for many fans in my region.
    Thank you for your time and consideration.

      Open World ends up as Quantity over Quality, you need to fill that space with stuff, and filling that space with stuff means spreading stuff thinner.

    @jaeusa160 Před 3 měsíci +2

    I mean... it's an idea. I wouldn't go out of my way to call it a good idea. "Open world" is honestly just very overrated, oversaturated, and the depths and effort it has to go through to even be good are fairly extreme. What's Lara bringing to the table that Link isn't? Aside from a better looking game due to not being glued to being a shoddy Nintendo exclusive.
    And that's just the weakest example. What does this bring that Genshin doesn't, or Bethesda's next ES/FO game? Is this better off than a more chapter and story oriented entry? Is this tradeoff worthwhile? I don't think so. I think this just bloats budget and dev time for an arguably weaker game at the end. Mostly, "Open World" games work due to a large cast and a lot going on... Link's the only one who gets away with painfully long stretches of solo wandering in massively empty lands, and only because Nintendo fanboys will flip their lids if you dare to point out that leaves the Zelda franchise at the bottom of the barrel for these types of games.
    Lara's already dealing with that and without Nintendo's zombies... just stick to the more focused story and gameplay experience. You can make massive elaborate puzzles and sequences that way, rather than the massive trim down you need when it's just 1 of hundreds of "Open World" puzzles.

      They won't. That kind of gameplay only exists because of the meticulously contained and structured environments, no matter how large they may seem.
      So this is a pipe dream at best.
      I don't know why anyone would be so naive as to think "If the environments are suddenly going to be 20x larger, surely it will have the same density of puzzling and parkour and normal Tomb Raider gameplay". Not without 20x the game budget and staff it ain't.

      It became quite old, pretty quick. Not a fan of the 'Carry exactly 1 handgun + exactly 1 rifle + exactly 1 shotgun + exactly 1 bow' formula. Also, make bows a Hell of a lot less important and focus on the dual handguns. And, while we're at it : Stop forcing Lara into a mandatory crouching position, every single time there's an enemy anywhere around here - even if the player doesn't know it.

    If you want a good Tomb Raider take it away from Crystal Dynamics and never let them touch Lara again. Give Tomb Raider to Aspyr and see what they can do with her. I would like Shift Up to get Tomb Raider. Have a hot Lara again with hopefully a good story and good action. That said, none of these things will happen so the franchise can just die. I have the remastered original games. I am good.

    Josh brings up how an open world Tomb Raider game might mimic a Far Cry game, but I'd be more worried about it being compared to Horizon (Zero Dawn; Forbidden West), games. Scott says, those games restrict your movement, but Forbidden West, does not. It has more free form climbing and includes tons of puzzle ruins and cauldrons aka Tombs. It also has collectibles and loot caches that require figuring out how to navigate to as well. It has mount and gliders, too. So, this would be my worry if I were a TR dev thinking about an open world experience since many recent games actually do open worlds well. Not every open world is a bloated, boring checklist game from Ubisoft in 2024. To think that, or try and mimic this is where it can go wrong.

    I want the new Lara Croft to be for Tomb Raider what the Daniel Craig era was for James Bond. Make the character more serious, emotionally complex, grounded and less of a caricature without losing the classic elements of cool, sex appeal, humour and grey morality that made the character fun and interesting. Making the character more "real" doesn't mean they have to be a wet mop.

  • @MRAGFT7
    @MRAGFT7 Před 3 měsíci

    I played Rise (which I enjoyed) and Shadow (not as much. Pretty boring and underwhelming final boss) back to back recently. I got tired them making the whole story about Trinity and Lara still stuck on her parent's death. It's ok to tackle those things, specially her parents, but one game was enough to it. Having her on the same emotional place got me tired. I thought her breakout was going to be when she got Jonah "killed" but no, it was the greatest moment that lasted nothing and she went back to being a kid who explores and casually kills.
    This is the same issue that happened to Hitman when Absolution came out. They put drama into it and became a linear story that most people didn't like (although I personally enjoyed it for a change). However, IO Interactive quickly realized their mistake and went back to the original formula (sandbox) with improved mechanics etc. and we've had Hitman 1, 2 and 3 as top enjoyable games. Crystal Dynamics should take a note or two from IO Interactive on how to handle failure.
