I'm always entertained by the "Messed Up Origins" series.

I have a question what is zeus sex count (how much sex has Zeus have)
One of the most underrated jokes in Disney history is in Hercules when they're like, "someone's hurt! Call IX I I!" Love that part. 😂
I actually laughed so hard at that when I watched it and figured out what they meant 😂
Yes! My dad and I when we watch it with my 1 year old die laughing every time!

Loved it to... when I speak to people that that's my favorite joke of the movie ... 😒 they don't get it...
I love Phil’s line “two words I. Am. Retired” because in Greek the phrase is “Είμαι συνταξιούχος” which IS two words
Wow, I didn’t know that. You just made that joke funnier for me
Ohhhhhhhhhhh
O
Disney doesn’t miss a thing.
I just thought it was a "haha he can't count" joke (especially since Hercules - or Heracles as I like calling him because I HATE that they called him by his Roman name in a Greek setting - starts counting on his fingers)
Greek Mythology rarely ended with "happily ever after" for the characters involved, especially the women in the stories
I’m pretty sure you can count the number of people who had happy endings in Greek Mythology on one hand and still have fingers left over
You could count the amount of goddesses and women raped in mythology and you would need to use your toes and friends hands and feet to count them all
Even back then, women were considered story pieces or objects to be used. Glad to see things haven't changed

Well if you look at it these Greek gods and goddess like to keep it in the family, such as Zeus and Hera being brother and sister married each other, in one myth Ares and Aphrodite are brother and sister alone with Hephaestus and Aphrodite’s had kids for both brothers. So yea these stories goes side ways really, really fast.
Is nobody going to mention the fact that in Disney's Hercules, his relationship with Meg isn't based on the _actual_ Hercules and Megara, but the biblical story of Samson and Delilah?
I noticed that there were some similarities between the original Hercules mythology and the story Samson.
Mostly what happened between Hercules and his fourth wife with the whole the hero with super strength saves a girl, marries the girl and she ends up being his almost down fall.
@@spikesenglishrose 1: Samson and Delilah _never_ married, their relationship was sexual.
2: Samson never "saved her life."
3: Hercules's downfall seems like a deadly tragedy from good intentions.
Samson's downfall was just him thinking with the wrong head.

For "Disney Explained" I've been patiently waiting for Jon to do "Robin Hood" and "The Sword in the Stone." They are two of my favorites, and I am really interested in their original stories.
I second that. Those are two of my absolute favorite Disney movies.
Robyn hood would be very interesting but tricky as theres no one actual "Robyn hood" and appears to be an amalgamation of several throughout the retellings and addings over the centuries. Same with King Arthur, there complicated but fassinating. Id love to see John try and tackle them.
Sword in the Stone is based on a book of the same name by TH White. It's a bit different from the movie.
I'd love to hear them too! Though Sword in the Stone is a very long book, so it would take some time to research.
@@sundownsahara It's about 200 pages long; I wouldn't say it's that long. Unless you mean read it as well as the rest of The Once And Future King series?
I remember when I was a kid who thought Hercules was an original story
Most of Disney is based on other things really... they put their own twists on the story but its never completely original. ( Maybe some of Disney stuff is completely original but idk.)
Mickey Mouse is not original because he is based on a mouse

Man i feel bad for Meg. Also she should be a Disney princess.
Maybe Disney just finds her too sexy to market to little girls.
true. I mean, just look at her body.
That's the best part about her! She isn't.
Not every female heroine needs to be a part of the disney princess brand. obviously they're all good in their own ways but they don't have to have a royal title to be solidified as a great female character, even if it would technically be myth accurate
Disney's Hercules was my first date with my husband, we've been married 22 years, its my favorite Disney movie
Congrats
That’s so cute🥺
Cuteee
Aww so cute

I've read a version that Herakles had anger issues, such as killing his music teacher or dismembering those Minoans. So Hera didn't need to curse him only push him to his limit. That he killed Meg after coming back from the Oracle from hearing he has to serve king Eurystheus.
Jon: I gave Meg the shaft & not in the fun way Hercules does.
Yakko: *mwah* Goodnight Everybody!
Each version of Meg's fate sounds so messed up, so I can't pick a favorite. I want a whole new story where she never gets involved with any of them & just lives a nice, normal, & happy life.

"Like Hercules, I've given Meg the shaft. Only in a much less fun way than he did."
I --
Hera is the epitome of a selfish you know what... does she have any redeeming qualities. I don't know if I'm being to harsh or narrow minded on her but she really does only look for trouble because of her loose husband.
She's the goddess of marriage and look at what Zeus does, making her look like a fool. She couldn't do anything against him. There's some quote from a poet whose name I probably never bothered learning that has Zeus saying to the other Olympians "even if all of you fought against me, I'd kicked your butts." So she can only go after the mistresses & their kids hoping other mortals learn. Zeus is the problem. He's about the worst head of a pantheon there is.
Mark Uhler To add on to what you said, what doesn’t help is Zeus tricked her into marriage- she kept refusing his advances but then he took on the form of a pitiful bird/peacock one day whose wing was broken. Taking pity, she held the “bird” to her teat and then he transformed back, raping her. Being a goddess of marriage and having been “impure”, she saw no other choice but to be stuck with him AND on top of that, there was a point where she and the other Gods/Goddesses attempted to overthrow him- in turn, Zeus held her by the neck over Olympus, threatening to drop/kill her if she EVER did that again and for once, she feared for her life and promised to never do so (and of course he threatened the others as well if they attempted that shit again with her). AND since 1) She knows she can’t go against him(literally) and 2) She is a goddess of marriage and still tries to believe in being faithful/fruitful, her anger instead goes towards the maidens Zeus pursues. So..yea!:’D
So I was definitely harsh on Hera. Thank you for the information. Turns out most of the Gods are trash for their own reasons.
Well he raped some of his other "mistresses" and they and their children were still punished. You'd think being a freaking omnipotent being and going through what they went through she'd try to protect them from further abuse. Hera didn't deserve what happened to her but neither did those other women.
@@cynthiawashington3132 I understand and agree completely.
I read a version where Heracles atones for killing his wife and children by joining the Argonauts' journey.
I actually like the Disney take on Megara. Also, yes, she deserves to be a Disney Princess.
In one book I read about Heracles, after giving years of grief to him, Hera finally decided to let him live in peace.
Leave my guy Frankie alone. He was a part of my childhood through Camp Rock 2, Jonas, Jonas LA, and Ponyo. Besides this, thank you for the information that I never knew.
This is my favorite, mostly because it discusses my middle name sake, Deianira. Though hearing you say Deianira made me so uncomfortable cause I pronounce it Day-an-air-a 😂
Quick fact, my mom gave me the middle name because she thought it meant loyalty. It roughly translates to man killer and she didn't know this part of the story. 😂😂 great way to shut down a bad date.
I pronounced it like day-a-nee-ra
Also, having a name meaning "man killer" is so metal
You’re named for her so your her namesake, not the other way around
It's also my daughter's middle name and I was cringing with the mispronunciation.
I chose this name because of Deianira and later discovered it's meaning 😝
But hey, he tried 👏🏼 👏🏼
At least your name wasn't Hera.
Please look at Odysseus's wife Penelope. She's an interesting character in mythology
Yes yes yes love Penelope and comparing her character to Clytemnestra, Agamemnon's wife who was her total opposite.

Will you do a video on the story of the Swan children? About kids cursed to be swans and fly every day only at night to turn human at night. The children are siblings cursed like this so there is no airs to the thrown of their family's kingdom it has a old cartoon movie and book but it's mostly forgotten. I'm not talking about the Swan princes that is a different movie and no clue if that was baced off the old tale I'm speaking of. Love to see a video on that one
I've never heard of swan children or even a story similar to what you've described it sounds interesting as hell though.
Im pretty sure you're thinking of the children of lir it's an old Irish legend that I grew up with, pretty good story :)
I've never heard of the Swan Children. But it does sound interesting. I'd like to see/hear/read it.
'The Swan Princess' is loosely based on the same tale as 'Swan Lake' made famous in the world of ballet. And they did a twist on SL in 'Black Swan' with Mila Kunis where she is a ballet dancer who gets waayy to into her role (on stage) as Odelle the magical duplicate of Odette who tricks the prince into mistakenly declaring his love for _her_.
Additionally, Barbie even tried an animated movie based on the tale of beautiful Odette.
It is a cool one idk if it's related to all the story's you all stated here. That's why I love to see it here to find out more on it.
OMG I've read a fictional book that included a part with cursed Swan children, it's a series call the Sevenwaters Series by Juliet Marillier and the story includes a girl's siblings being turned into swans from a family members curse. I'd love for Jon to look into the origins of that tale it is interesting!
there's one more Disney movie that must have a messed up origin Robin Hood

I'm sad that she had die in those brutal ways but I just loved her interpretation in the Hercules movie 🔥 Meg and Hercules are one of my favorite couples in cartoons!
Jon Solo "Alright girls and boys, Daddy is going to tell you the real story" Mother "Oh no not this again, I thought we agreed to wait til after they are ten" Jon "wait they have to hear all the ways he killed his kids" Wish my parents or siblings would have done this even as a campfire story. then leave it like see what could happen (with a scary little laugh) Great Job and thank you!!!

Hercules has two different pronunciations because ‘hur-ka-les’ represents the Greek interpretation of the myth while ‘hairs-Kles” represents the Roman one. They are essentially two separate characters and it is a common misconception that the Roman pronunciation is actually the correct one. However changing the pronunciation of the name points to which specific myth you are discussing :)
