#MessedUpOrigins #TheLittleMermaid #DisneyExplained
Hope you liked this episode, freaks and geeks! It had been so long since we talked about The Little Mermaid I honestly forget how much I dig her story (both the old and new versions). Make sure to leave me YOUR thoughts in a comment down below - including who YOU think taught Ariel how to use a toilet!
Like a fish does.
Can you do the messed up origins for the following korean fairy tales?
Gyunwoo and Jingneo (견우와 직녀) Young Master Willow (버들 도령)
Heungbu and Nolbu (흥부와 놀부)
The Sun and The Moon (햇님과 달님)
The Rebel Hong Gil Dong (역적 홍길동)
Woodcutter and Fairy/Angel (선녀와 나무꾼)
The fairy tale about Rebel Hong Gil Dong (역적 홍길동) became a korean drama as Rebel: thief who stole the people
and Heungbu and Nolbu (흥부와 놀부) became a korean movie but the actual fairy tales are quite different compared to the movie/drama because the plot for the movie was about "What if these were things that actually happened and the tales were just brought down as children stories as time went by?
And the drama was just a fantasy drama, but interestingly, the story of Rebel Hong Gil Dong had a specific timeline of what king was ruling then (king yeonsan *gun (pronounced as *goon but fast and shortly) so my theory is that what happened in the story and the main character was probably what people during that timeline (of when that person was king) hoped had existed for them because in historical writings it is said that the king was a complete tyrant and it was one of the terrible times of rule for the people of the land so he didn't get a new name (known in history) as a king and was left with the title "gun" stuck to his name instead. There is more to the king's backstory, but that's way too long tmi so I hope you can (possibly, hopefully) cover that in (maybe) another video (pls).
Also, both drama and movie is fictional.
You're so sexy!
Thanks for including the link to my Deviantart!!!
Let me know what the next video will be; I want to help out with that 😁🎨
Jon Solo, hey dude hope u are doing okay during the pandemic. I know you did some videos and on mythology. I’m wonder if u could do one on Adam and Eve. I tried to search for it on CZcams but couldn’t find it.
“Unfortunately mad does not mean stab proof” is going to be a my new saying
I laughed out loud at that! I love me some Jon Solo and his humor
Mad means yell and hit and stab with slime proof
Ha I love this chanel
Unless you're the Incredible Hulk. You don't want to stab him when he's angry.

I guess Scuttle doesn't know what a fork is 🤷♀️
i wonder if her ending up a "daughter of the air" is why disney called her Ariel. a play on words.
Omg I think you’re right! Ariel, as in aerial? That makes so much sense now!
Or a side reference to Ariel, the fae of the air in Shakespeare's The Tempest
A play on words.
Air + -el (hebrew suffix mean god) = so god of air, or air of the gods
Ariel is a common Jewish boys name meaning lion of G-d
As the historians say
They weren’t gay
They were just really good friends
You
You got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend
OH BABY YOOOOOOOOU...... :)
Perhaps, but many friendships (for one of them) ends up becoming more.
@@dolphquick2686 put it in my mouth 🤣
I agree. Wanna see the swan princess done
No one says they’re both gay, I only hear about Andersen being gay or bi and the other guy never writing back again after Andersen admitted his love for him
I clicked faster than Ursula took Ariel’s voice
I- this comment spoke to me
I get the joke but if that was the case it kook you two minutes just to click a button
To be fair, that one action took an entire song.
Fast then ursla took Ariels voice
Accurate
I sometimes even get annoyed when people think that Ariel wanted to be human only because of Prince Eric. Even the Disney version had Ariel singing that she wanted to live on land before she met Prince Eric. She had a more of important reason in the Han Christian Andersen version.
And in both versions, the prince was just a tool for her goals
It wasn't more important. It was selfish.
@@janinedear-barlow Knowing for a fact there is something other than oblivion beyond death, I think you'd be in on it, too. Ceasing to exist altogether terrifies all of us whether we want to admit it or not. No one in recent enough date to be reliable info has come back to tell us anything other than nothingness awaits us all, and that's exactly why we cling to souls. If you knew the eternal soul was real on more than mere faith, you'd do whatever it takes to avoid oblivion, too. We all would.
@@TheNotverysocial Adding on to what you said (sort of), it is constantly mentioned in the story how terrified of death and ceasing to exist Ariel was, and yet at the end of the story, she chooses that terrible eternity over killing the prince, which I think definitely doesn't make her selfish. But that's just my opinion.
@@TheNotverysocial as much as I agree on this there are some people out there who prefers oblivion and are comfortable with it (like my dad) so not all.
The sisters: "here we sacrificed our hair to get a knife so we can save you!"
The little mermaid: *throws knife into the ocean*
The sisters: YOU BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least it’s not this other version of the story where the gave up the hands!

When he said that, I nearly did a spit-take lol. I shouldn't have taken a sip at that moment 😂
As someone who shares a birthday with my husband I can honestly say...it is cute. Except that I have to share my cake every year....
I laugh pretty hard when he said that XD They way he said it.
He sound so dead when he says it
@@ImCassy what if your kids are born that day too? Then your whole fam will have a bday on the same day lol
Omg why have I NEVER realized that Ariel and Eric had the same birthday! They literally were celebrating it on the same day!!
What day, because last time I checked it was in November
Imagine how much fun they would have planning their dirthday.I think they would go on a trip on a ship every year.
Oof TvT the 17th
@Miguelle Landry is a perfect 10 I think they meant the day and month
I think the way Anderson made his protagonists go through a tough journey make them so much more relateable. Like pursuing a dream, finding love, being adventurous - they don't just give a moral, but portray characters to a deeper level.
I grew up with these stories, I'm from Denmark and in school, we were analyzing, comparing stories, comparing to HCA's own life and combing through the life of HCA to find out where and why he wrote the stories.
I remember my Danish teacher saying: "The reason why you should accept the horror and pain the mermaid goes through is that nothing we want in life comes easy or without sacrifice in some way. She had to fight for her place amongst the humans and she gained a soul. Remember that in HCA's time, the soul was the most important thing and what makes us humans, she becomes an angel for her pure heart and her love towards not only the prince but also humanity."
I really love this story, because her words made me understand and in some ways, I saw how her story could help me when I felt like I had tough choices to make that would mean giving up on something and letting go.
Thats ao beautiful. But throwing the knife in the ocean made me laugh my head off😂
I wish I could have done this in school!
I just love that in both the movie and the original story when the ship sinks into the ocean Ariel is like: Yeah f%*k all the other dudes on this ship I'm gonna save my love whom I just saw like 15 minutes ago.
JEdiaz Well in the story he was thrown overboard and most likely everyone else on board went down with the ship.
If you remember they all were safe on a rescue boat. Eric was the only one drowning.
I thought it was funny how obsessed they made her for him in the disney movie, it's almost like she forgot what she liked about the human world. I think it would've been better that with also showing her around town he also taught her things.
"Ahhh teenagers...give them an inch and they'll swim all over you" is legitly my answer to that.
Not selfishly biased at all.
I find Andersen’s works to be very interesting. People may dislike him and his work, but I find it shows truth, and hidden meaning about life. The struggles we endure to become that which we are happy with. Life is not perfect. Fairytales from movies are fun, but they do not normally teach true suffering, and how to Conquer it.
the last part hit the nail on the head 👌
Youre so right!
Wait people disliked him and his work? Why? 😧
I think the prince having Ariel sleep outside his bedroom on the cushion is also about the author showing that the prince wasn't trying to "make a move". It reinforces the idea that there was no romantic attraction.
I also think it depects her as a pet/responsibility as well. Like Jon brought out, the latter aspect likely influenced the former.
This is good.
I think it’s kind of interesting that the prince couldn’t see her as someone he could marry. Most of the time in these stories a guy sees a pretty girl and “falls in love with her” because she’s just so darn beautiful. But this time as pretty as the little mermaid is, it does matter that they can’t carry a intellectual conversation. It’s kind of encouraging for women in particular by showing that one of the worse things you can do is to give up your “voice” and that doing so can only bring pain and sorrow.
This is such an interesting interpretation.
thats why I hate this story… this is one of the worst love story that I watched as a kid now that I’m adult and I realized it
Ursula: Babies, my poor little poopsie.
I don't know why but that scene always makes me laugh my ass off
It makes me laugh too XD

"And he didn't say no homo, so there's only one way to interpret that"
Scuttle :It's a dinggle hopper
Jon: it's a f**ing fork scuttle
Moana’s personality reminds me a lot of Ariels in the sense of adventure and seeing what’s out there.
Ikr...
She's reversed Ariel 😂😂
Rapunzel reminds me of Ariel
Moana left her family for her people. Ariel left her people for a d__k.
noni widjaja I wish I could laugh react to that like you didn’t even watch his video and how he talks about Ariel was doing it more for humanity or mortality because she was fascinated with people before she met the prince.
I think this version of the story is much better, as someone who can appreciate "The beauty in the sorrow", this idea that the protagonist saves herself against all odds. Well, that is inspirational for all the right reasons and makes her a far better character.
As far as the torture she went through, there are people who live with disabilities and pain every day. Those same people often are some of the strongest individuals you will ever meet.
So the prince wasn’t a love interest he became a tool in her conquest.
Pretty much yeah. Yet Aerial is the victim. She wasn’t used as a tool. Her end was her own doing
YamiNoGame well I think plenty of people do that unknowingly. Like if a woman wants a child, or a man wants a wife. They get distracted by their own goals they don’t even focus on the reality of the relationships they build.
thats taking too much from it, she loved him more than herself. thats not a 'tool'
She was afraid to die enough to get through all that, but not afraid enough to kill an innocent. She was brave and passionate from start to finish.
The seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake. You dream about going up there but that is a big mistake. Just look at the world around you right here on the ocean floor! Such wonderful things surround you, what more is you lookin for?
UNDER THE SEA!!!
Well it’s true that the grass isn’t always greener. Curiosity and the desire to know what’s beyond what you know isn’t a bad thing. But different doesn’t mean it’s ideal, good or even what you expected it to be
I Sang this lol
I heard that in my head in Sabastian's voice.

Speaking of Babyaga, you mind doing messed up origins of Bartok the Magnificent?
Well, the story is created by Don Bluth, and Bartok doesn't have any origins, except Baba Yaga was used as a character, being the famous character of the Slavic folklore.
Why would anybody consider the Prince a sick for not loving Aerial? He doesn't know the sacrifices Aerial has made for him and even if he did, sometimes you may want someone to love you and that person just doesn't, that's life.
Then this woman never speaks to him so they have nothing on which to build a relationship, lack of communication rates higher than adultery in reasons for a relationship breakdown. x
I don’t think the issue is so much the prince not loving the mermaid, but rather how he’s condescending towards her by having her sleep on a velvet cushion outside his door and calling her his “little foundling” and a “dumb child”.
Just because you’re not attracted to someone doesn’t mean you can treat that person like crap.
It doesn’t help that the prince plays with the mermaid’s emotions by saying he would marry her only to then dump her for someone who looked like his savior (despite his savior standing next to him!).
@@beethovensfidelio I mean he doesn't know she is his savior. In his eyes the one who save him was the nun. And also for the bed part would you rather him sleeping with her and not love her. For the "little foundling" and the "dumb child" part it is established that the mermaid doesn't understand the human world and the prince is always taking care of her. He probably see her as a little sister or a child rather than a romantic interest.
@@ngenge1309 At least Prince Eric gave Ariel her own bed to sleep in.
Were there no extra beds or sofas for the little mermaid to sleep on in the Andersen fairy tale?
Why are you defending such an awful character?
You can take care of someone and not refer to them as a little foundling or a dumb child.
@@ngenge1309 Also, “dumb” in the story’s context is referring to the mermaid’s muteness.
@@ngenge1309 I’m sure there have been people you weren’t romantically interested in, but you still treated them like human beings.
I've actually read a version of Andersen's tale in which the Mermaid just dissolves in the water, and that's it. Never heard of the transforming into the air creature part. And I feel like this somewhat happy ending takes something from the story, kinda like when Marvel characters die just to be ressurected in another movie. Maybe I'm fucked up as a person, but I love this tragic story. But I cried my eyes out as a child when I've read the tale, so I understand why Andersen desided to add that part.

When I was a kid, the Little Mermaid spoke to my soul. I wanted to be Ariel in the sense of always being in charge of making my own choices. Looking back I have done exactly that with my life.
However, after I had my son, the movie Ponyo came out and when he got old enough to watch both, my feelings toward Ariel as THE little mermaid changed. I found myself in love with another version of Han's story. One of which, I could share with my own child. He couldn't connect to the Disney version but the Miyazaki film brought him the same joy the Little Mermaid did for me when I was his age.
Even though he's a teenager now, Ponyo still remains as one of his favorite movies. Thanks Hans Christian Anderson!
I only knew the version where the mermaid turns into sea foam, and thought it was way too sad. Now that I know the full version and how Andersen was personally related to it I am again falling in love with this story!
RRMartin: none of my characters are safe
Andersen: hold on my beer
The story my grandma read to me was the first draft. The sea-foam ending was that tragic romance, where whenever the prince walked the shores, she would rest upon his feet for a mere moment of bliss. I remember the illustrations having a 50s or 50s style of illustration, looking like brushed ink in green monochrome in all the stories of the books.
Also, the whole love arc between Ariel, the prince, and the women she married reminds me of that intensity of love we felt as teens.

Honestly, a HUGE round of applause on this revisited video on The Little Mermaid. Very good with explaining the extra research, and I do agree with your argument on how the original gives Ariel a more adventurous and "heroic" vibe. Sleeping outside his bedroom door was I think, a privileged position for a servant in the 16th century. This actually shows that he held her in some sort of esteem since she got a cushion I would guess. But also shows he didn't view her in a romantic way. History Extra has some information about this.
Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney Film. I also love Anderson's story. Really loved learning the history of the story.
Actually, the original story contains themes of humanism and feminism, but unfortunately, these aspects are often diluted or weakened in the more commonly seen modern versions.
The original litteraly depict the mermaid changing for a dude surffering for nothing and show that at the end she get what she wanted by herself whitout a men, then the Disney version depict a simple story were the mermaid do really do anything other than abandonning her familly to marry a guy. Nothing wrong with with marrying a prince but compared to the original...
I never liked the Disney version of TLM. Once I learned that most of Disney's stories were based off other works I went searching for tthe better ones. I really like hearing your more in dept variations of these stories. Thank you for doing such good research!
This was soooo interesting!! It's sad that Anderson had to go through so many hardships, but maybe that was one of the reasons of how he could add so much character and depth to the antagonists as well as he did with the protagonists ....thanks for another great video Jon!!
Could have added more, like her messed up journey to the witch and how the Prince let her be one of her slaves instead of leaving her outside like a beggar.

honestly Ariel has been my least favorite Disney princess, and The Little Mermaid one of my least favorite fairytales but after watching this video I'm determined to give Ariel another chance and rewatch the movie with a new lens! Thanks Jon!
Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. It's awesome that she's a mermaid. I felt like she was spoiled and rebellious. And her dad wasn't perfect, but he was trying and he really did love her
@@elizabethmullen3776 You know that teenagers are rebellious right?
Loved this episode 💕
Like many people I had the idea that Ariel was a somewhat hopeless victim dependent on Eric for her happiness, so it was really interesting to see this alternative autonomous perspective. I’d heard of the ending where she turns into sea foam but didn’t know of the original ending of her turning into a daughter of the air. Like you I actually think this is the best version.
Hans Christian Anderson’s life is captivating. His writing holds so much depth and it’s fascinating to draw the similarities between his struggles and his work. Art imitates life.
I now view the little mermaid in a new light 🧜🏻♀️
My dude, I’ve been struggling with emotional trauma (got dumped and trying to revisit the breaking free from codependency thing is the TLDR) and I really enjoy the interpretation/analysis about the ending. Honestly, just before discussing the children of the air bit, I was bitterly mumbling, “yeah well the poor girl fell in love, chose selflessness as a result of not putting herself first, and ceased to exist in a sea of bubbles and it’s just how it goes when you effing love and care for someone for years who doesn’t want you”.
I completely forgot about the children of the air thing. But I’m also really glad you made this revisit video because it’s reminding us that being human isn’t a black and white adventure: there’s a lot of directions life can take us as a result of us just being us. If we did all that we could with the right themes in mind, then the only thing left is really to move forward. So as much as I’ve enjoyed the many other videos, I have to say, I particularly enjoy this one. It’s like a not therapy therapy. Kudos, friend 👌👌
I was so excited for this video!!! I can’t wait to watch it!
I love this story! Thanks so much Solo for you research and interpretation, you are a professional and entertaining. Truly admirable and inspiring.
10:30 "You can see them as Anderson's way of blackmailing kids into not being A-holes" Comedy gold.
17:52 The dog: “who tf!!?”
"blackmailing the kids reading his stories into not being assholes."
"Hope and dispair balance back out to zero... You told me that once, didn't you? Now I get what you meant. It's true that I've saved a few people. But in equal measure, my heart became filled with resentment and hatred. So much so that I even hurt my dearest friend. For as much happiness as we wish on one person, we can't help but curse someone else. That's how it works for us. I was stupid... so stupid."
AGHHHH STOP YOU’RE MAKING ME CRY AGAIN POOR SAYAKA 😭😭
Damn Hans Christian Anderson really fell in love with a vampire from twilight. His life story just keeps getting sadder and sadder
13:30 Exactly. That's why I love the original story: It learns that eternal luck doesn't only rely on finding the love of your life, but also on good deeds.

San Francisco Ballet did an amazing and pretty accurate adaptation if anyone's interested in checking it out. They actually included Andersen as a shadow character, longing for the prince along with the Mermaid. It's got an amazing transformation scene, too.
Yaaaaayyy!!!! Absolutely excited for the Messed Up Murders 😁😁❤
I think Hans Christian Anderson might have included the the little mermaid not being able to talk because he felt as if he could not talk about his relationships and therefore felt muted from society

As I writer, I can confirm that the characters we love and identify with most are the ones we take the most pleasure in making suffer and bringing them to the breaking point.
I really love the amount of research that went into this video, very entertaining! Also I think that Anderson’s trials for his characters are interesting because it’s unique, and hopefully therapeutic for him since he wrote indirectly about himself, and they usually have an empowering ending :)
dude this is AWESOME!!!!! I love these vids so much
Again Awesome Video Jon.... I always learn something new from you!!!
When Jon says "Edward" my brain just goes, *vampire.*
Watching this now, I’m kinda glad I didn’t submit my art in time, cause I really would’ve embarrassed myself 😬🤷🏾♀️
Hey Jon! Love your content - Even though I feel as though I'm well versed in my knowledge of fairy tales, I always end up learning something from you. I had no idea there was more to the Little Mermaid than what you had mentioned in your previous video, and I'm super impressed with how you presented the extra info. My favorite part though was bringing in other perspectives from literary arguments from the annotated edition you have. I'm stoked to finally be see your long awaited project for Messed Up Murders! I'm super hyped for next week! Hope your quarantine isn't bringing you, Gunther or Lauren down. This is something I look forward to each time I get a notification you've posted a new video, and the quality just gets better and better. Keep up the great work.
By far one of my favorites of yours. 13/10 nailed it
Yes, I've read the original story and I loved your analysis.
"I want two legs."
goes to some demon woman with eight legs "Can I borrow a few of those?"
I remember this actual Little Mermaid story. I don't remember why but my mother bought me a picture book before of the Little Mermaid and instead of the disney story, it was the real actual story. It made me cry for the mermaid and I would always wait for wind to come inside my house thinking it was her. The same thinking happened when my grandfather died before and I thought he was helping the mermaid got to heaven with him. This video brought back a lot of memories.
Great Work! Amazing Mr. Solo!
