Sometimes the Fates are depicted as a young woman, a middle-aged woman, and an old woman. This is to show the daughter, mother, and old crone stages of life.
@@xanderliptak Yes. That is why they are often said to predict the past, present and future and their physical forms represent that as well. :D.
i 100% came to the comments because I was taught this, and wanted to see if anyone else knew that part of the myth.
Artemis, Selene and Hecate are often portrayed this way too. I find it interesting since they're from the same mythology.
@@xanderliptak Every once in a while you will see the male version of a Crone in the human depictions of Zeus and Hades or in Hephaestus in his god form. The Crone is often defined as a very old woman, it is only in the current religions that she is seen as a "witchy" figure. Basically, it is any woman after she has reached the stage of her life past menopause that she is indeed a Crone. I would be considered one because I am at that stage of my life myself.
@@xanderliptak a crone is a middle-aged to old person is my point here. They are not always seen as a person with one foot in the grave.
"Did they have parents or did the cosmos just fart them out of their giant space butt" a sentence I never thought I'd hear
Depends on which myth you read. Half say Zeus is the dad and a titaness is the mom, half say Nyx created them before that.
Oh, and the Zeus one says they hyperaged to crones upon birth
Or it canB that destruction and Gaia had more than just Uranus
@@nolufefemaho891 Dude, Gaia wished for Uranus and Tartarus to be made and it happened. And the Fates have either Nyx as their sole parent or Zeus and an titaness. The Fates didn't exist in the Titan era according to the original myth.
The moment he said that, I snorted and laughed like a ten year old. 😂
“she’s known as the inflexible” I too am know as inflexible
This made me laugh out loud so thank you
🤣
In Greece 'virgin' meant unmarried not never having sex, by the way. The Catholics gave it that definition later.
Well, the Christians christianized a lot of other cultures' myths.
But then why would Medusa have been punished for having sex with Poseidon ?
@@fae69s Because they are at Athena's temple and Athena is a virgin? Or maybe because Ovid depicted Athena that way? Or maybe it's just the Christianized version?
Amara Agunwa because worshipers at the temple were meant to be pure in all ways especially for Athena because she represented wisdom and purity, so when she was r*ped inside of athenas temple Athena took it as an offense and punished Medusa for being a “slut” essentially. However in different versions of the story, Medusa was actually blessed by Athena to have the ability to turn people in to stones. Because then she could defend herself if that were to happen again to her. It depends on the region of Greece the story is being told from.
I thought artimis was the virgin cause she didnt want or like men??
I've always found the children of Nyx so interesting. You've got the Fates, Moros (doom), Momus (satire and mockery), Eris (chaos and discord), and Nemesis (revenge and retribution) to name my favorites
Hmm Is she who they named the cosmetics company after? Nyx stuff is awesome btw. lol

Why can’t he be my history teacher.
My history teacher is just teaching us politics and shit

"Lame but not in the way vests are lame" what a weird yet perfect explanation 😂 I guess now everyone knows exactly what kind of lame you mean
Hey Jon, Random Greek guy here! I just want to say thank you for explaining to everyone our mythology. Also I want to say that ancient Greeks actually sometimes put the Fates higher than the gods and they believed that they had a big impact on them. Finally, I want to say that you should keep up the good work.
Yeah, I can tell from your name lol
The fates are indeed a different breed and the gods can't touch them, but they touch the gods. Snip their little strings. Their undoing. And I think they are ramping up now, scissors in hand.
I’ve always been curious about the fates
Me too
Same as me
I'm just here cuz I like his vids
When I have a question I just read about them
I thought they were jus weird
All sharing 1 eye couldn’t be my sisters
2:29 “Clotho, the one with the green skin who Hades macs on” 😂😂
I swear if they showed this dude in school kids would listen, he's so funny but does his research and knows his material.
The video has just been uploaded and there is one dislike already? What the hell? Why would you even dislike Jon's video, some people simply have no taste 🤷🏼♀️
i actually see that a lot, a 35 minute long video just uploaded 10 min ago and alredy 2-5 dislike.
SIMP!
It fine to dislike videos if your not enjoying them but I really don’t understand people who will just dislike a video without watching it. It’s ridiculous
Bots?
@@byulharangforlife I think it's bots or maybe people just like being part of the smaller group like it's some club to be apart of the 10 dislikes on a video of obvious quality.
Fun fact: Everyone's favorite flavor is Hercules
You right
Thank you. I needed reader x Hercules vore
so i guess chocolate ;]
@@kevin4061 idk what that reader x whatever character thing means is it a fanfic thing?
@@thomas-stilinski8149 It's a thing when some people write fanfics where an anonymous person is shipped with a fictional character and you can fill the the anonymous character role with yourself
10:15 celadon is indeed a city in pokemon.its in the Kanto region and home of the grass gym leader,Erika
Which is where you get Eevee & Learn to gamble! XD
And its spelled Celadon
Abe G thank you! I thought I remembered it from Pokemon Red
Even more fun fact; Celadon, along w/ all Kanto Cities, are named after colors & are that color in the original games.
Celadon is light greenish blue color. Like a green mint; more green than blue in this colors sake.
😂😂😂

how much weight do you lose a week from doing this
Lol
Lailah Jones you gain a few pounds from getting new knowledge. Highly suggest it for everyone
Since you’re doing a messed up origin of the fates, you should revisit this and talk about the DC version of the fates from legends of tomorrow.
Literally first thing I was thinking of, thanks for calling it out
blackheartlily 😂🤣😂 you’re welcome. Ps “of” a typo there
@@georgemichaelrobert6004 fair enough, fixed it 😝
Yeah, if he'd checked LoT first, he'd have known how to pronounce their names. So far, he's 0 for 3. 😆
NekoEcho13 I don’t think Zorey andWhatever her two sisters names would be in Greek mythology. LOL but I was just thinking that if he was doing The Disney version of their stories, then he should do a Nother video saying the Disney version in the DC version plus the Greek mythology and see what they have in common and what’s different.
I'm simple. I see a Job Solo upload, I click.

Hey Jon, when you start Norse Mythology, I know a book you could get to help you. It's called "Norse Mythology" (very creative) It's written by Neil Gaiman, he also wrote Coraline. The stories are both funny and dark, which I know you like, so have fun. :)
PLEASE LIKE SO JON SEES THIS!
a+ for creativity
Also like a big thank you to Jon for doing all the research and putting it into videos for us to watch. I definitely feel more knowledgeable after watching this channel
8:00 back then (in some places ) child birth for women was considered the same as a battle for men: painful, likely way to die, and heroic
I had once read that the fates were 3 women, and in another story I heard that they were of different ages … and by that they meant an old woman, a matron, and a maid.
But upon further research it turns out that the last part is more of a Neopagan view and not an origins version of the fates.
I wear Hercules merchandise often, Hades watch out
Hmm kin jong un wearing hercules merch... Interesting...

Fun (Greek) fact for you Jon: In Greek most of the time when you see oi togeether its pronounced i and ai together its pronounced e,so they are actually called Mires!
I’d totally want to know everything that happened in the past! Knowing the future is too risky, as is knowing everything happening right now. Besides, it would clear up so many questions I have about the world.
From this moment on, I'm going to refer to my birth as The Great Cosmic Fart... I like it and it's fitting 😆
I need to know more about these Graeae, though. A quick Google search got me this from Wikipedia:
"In Greek mythology the Graeae, also called the Grey Sisters and the Phorcides, were three sisters who shared one eye and one tooth among them. Their names were Deino, Enyo, and Pemphredo."
I'd love to hear what you have to say about these lovely ladies. Also, thoughts on how any of these characters might relate to the witches in Macbeth?
Love your work! Keep it up! 💜
I’d like to know all the past, there’s too much going on rn, and if I knew the future, nothing would be a surprise.
Love that little
Twist myth at the end! I am learning so much from you. Thank you for making this series for us.

I'm so into greek mythology and love watching and learning new or more stuff from this channel . Keep posting john solo!
You’re perspective on social media is spot on
Do the origins of Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton. It’s on Disney+. So technically, it’s Disney.
Have you heard they're making a Percy Jackson show on Disney+? Have you even heard of Percy?

I'm a little late, but you posted this video on my birthday!! I love Greek Mythology and your channel, keep up the great content Jon!!
I would chose everything that ever happened. I think that would help me more then present and future because I could learn with past experiences of everyone. Love your content by the way. 😉
I'd want to know about the past. though that would ruin all the mystery.

I really needed this. There are so many characters for past, present, and future but nine compare to the fates. You may live but they can guarantee you'll die.
Was just re-reading Percy Jackson and hoping you would do this video! 😊
Omg the Fates/Moiri are my third favorite of my top 5 greek mythology figures. The first is Dionysus and the second is Hestia
Great Episode!
Yayyyy! Was hoping for more mythology 🎉
1:40 funny you say that cause I just got my new puppy 2 days ago and my bday is at the end of this month!
Am I the only one that caught the fact that rick riordan based Franks backstory (from the Hero’s Of Olympus series) on Meleanger’s story? No? Just me? Oh well then 🙃
same! i just started re-reading son of Neptune a few days ago and this totally stood out to me. lmao
Meleager
This was so interesting. Very nice.
Another Great Video, Thanks Jon.
I missed hearing you plug Gunther's account though (he's cute). Good Luck with your next video and the new place.
I'd go for knowing everything that has already happened.
I would pick the past, everything that has happened.
Loved the video! Ive always adored Greek mythology and the Fates are some of my favorite characters. I'd love to see a video on Hephaestus. His backstory is just tragic and I've always loved hearing about him.
Always love these
When Jon first said Meleager I thought he was gonna say Meliodas
Yup it is a Pokemon city in the Kanto region, so he became a hero by becoming a Pokemon master
Excellent video
I appreciated that you did the research to know that the Gray sisters were an entirely different group of hags lol. And YES someone FINALLY talks about my girl, Nyx! No one ever brings her up, and she's such a fearsome primordial goddess, easily my favorite. Stronger than Zeus and older than Gaia (debatable, but there's some evidence of it), she's a boss and never discussed.
I'd choose the future. Think of all the money a person could make with that knowledge.
"I like space butt and I cannot lie" LMFAO
