    It's amazing how many origin stories one God can have. I read in a book when I was younger that Haphaestus was born of Hera and Zeus, but when Hera saw how ugly he was she abandoned him and wanted the 'monster' exiled. Zeus took pity on him and took him to Thetis the sea nymph where he was raised and become a great black Smith. One day Thetis and Hera were at a party when Hera noticed she was wearing the most beautiful necklace she'd ever seen, grew jealous, and demanded to know who'd made it. When she found out it was her son Hephaestus she welcomed him back on Mnt Olympus and was given a forge there with the job of making armor for the gods. Also how he married Aphrodite was different in the book too. Aparently Zeus got tired of all the male gods fighting for Aphrodites hand so he issued a contest that whoever gave him the most valuable gift could have her hand. Haphaestus then made Zeus's thunderbolts and that won the contest and he was thus married to Aphrodite.

    • @owenmaleski2203
      @owenmaleski2203 Před 3 lety +14

      In the book I bought, the origins were very different. In my version, Hephaestus was born ugly, but Hera wanted to keep him around, and as such the boy was fond of his mother. One day, when Zeus and Hera were fighting, Hephaestus tried to intervene and defend Hera, which made Zeus so angry that he picked him up and flung him down to earth, permanently crippling him. He was eventually accepted back to Olympus because of his crafting skills by Zeus. And Aphrodite was given to Hephaestus as a wife by Zeus for two reasons. First, because he was afraid of infighting over who would marry her. And second, because Hephaestus was one of the few gods that were somewhat reasonable.

    • @omniavanitas7893
      @omniavanitas7893 Před 3 lety +2

      @@jaker6531 As far as I know, the only son conceived with the help of a herb was Ares, and that only in a roman source. In the versions in which Hephaistos is fatherless Hera conceived him the same way Gaia, Nyx and Eris conceived their parthenogenetic children.
      As for Hephaistos being thrown from Olympos by Zeus, that is indeed a version of the story, though the reason had nothing to do with his appearance. Rather, Hephaistos, fully grown at this point, had attempted to free Hera from her chains when Zeus had her publicly tortured, and Zeus really didn't appreciate his involvement in the matter.

    11:40 I mean, given that Disney’s Zeus and Hera are depicted as a stable marriage with no cheating on Zeus’s part, it might not be either of those things. Instead, it would be more of a thing where Ares is infatuated with Aphrodite and hits on her from time to time, but she ain’t having none of that. So she takes matters into her own hands and sends the Cupids to keep Ares away so Hephaestus doesn’t have to worry. It would fit Aphrodite’s character in the related Hercules cartoon as she’s less a vapid trollop and more a love/relationship expert. I thus like this possibility as it makes her marriage to Hephaestus so, so sweet and wholesome for once.

    I thought Zeus got his lightning bolt from the cyclopses after he freed them from Tartarus, prior to his war against the titans? That was long before Hephaestus was even born.
    Anyway, I think the gods were actually very harsh on Hephaestus' looks. It's not that he was ugly, but he lived in a place where everyone else is a 10/10. Even being a 9/10 might make you get perceived as ugly. If it hadn't been for his crooked leg he might have been able to hang out with the rest of them. Still, he was one of the smartest and most cunning of the gods, and crossing him was always a bad idea.

    In Hawai'i, what you call "Side Piece" we call "Side Salad." That extra helping of macaroni salad in plate lunches. Not the main dish.
    Also, Hawai'i origin stories vary as well with versions dependent upon each island oral tradition. We learn all are correct. I can imagine with all the islands in Greece how this would be similar.
    Anyway, great info and the humor is awesome!
