The thought that Hades and Hephaestus just meet up and talk crap about the other Greek gods is just absolutely amazing😂
I think Hades basically took Hephaestus in like a son. Hades pretty much is a dunkle to his nephews and nieces.
For some reason, I have always felt bad for Hephaestus for being very undeservedly underrated. His personality and skills have fascinated me ever since I was kid, even more than the other Olympians.
Same here I mean he was the first one to make pro revenge a thing.
He has too much personality. That's his problem.
Whoever doesn't get it, I'm basically saying he's ugly.

@@FayBelleRose233 I agree. I’m not surprised that Zeus would be ableist. and as a disabled person, neurologically, it’s kind of upsetting..
Not just that.... Every other Olympian is born and automatically has everything , power, fancy tools or powers or weapons....
Hephaestus is the only disabled Olympian who has to earn the title even though arguably he has more going on intellectually than many of his brethren. And his problems are caused by other Olympians....

Hephaestus is so underrated and despite being obsessed with ancient mythology in my teens I had no idea he had children
Bestie Same 💀 I've Been A Fan Of Mythology For 2 Years Almost 3 And I Just Found Out A Few Months Ago
It's amazing how many origin stories one God can have. I read in a book when I was younger that Haphaestus was born of Hera and Zeus, but when Hera saw how ugly he was she abandoned him and wanted the 'monster' exiled. Zeus took pity on him and took him to Thetis the sea nymph where he was raised and become a great black Smith. One day Thetis and Hera were at a party when Hera noticed she was wearing the most beautiful necklace she'd ever seen, grew jealous, and demanded to know who'd made it. When she found out it was her son Hephaestus she welcomed him back on Mnt Olympus and was given a forge there with the job of making armor for the gods. Also how he married Aphrodite was different in the book too. Aparently Zeus got tired of all the male gods fighting for Aphrodites hand so he issued a contest that whoever gave him the most valuable gift could have her hand. Haphaestus then made Zeus's thunderbolts and that won the contest and he was thus married to Aphrodite.
In the book I bought, the origins were very different. In my version, Hephaestus was born ugly, but Hera wanted to keep him around, and as such the boy was fond of his mother. One day, when Zeus and Hera were fighting, Hephaestus tried to intervene and defend Hera, which made Zeus so angry that he picked him up and flung him down to earth, permanently crippling him. He was eventually accepted back to Olympus because of his crafting skills by Zeus. And Aphrodite was given to Hephaestus as a wife by Zeus for two reasons. First, because he was afraid of infighting over who would marry her. And second, because Hephaestus was one of the few gods that were somewhat reasonable.
And that is why we only take the primary sources into consideration.
and in some versions of the story hera birthed him herself with the use of a magic herb. in others zues is disgusted by hephaestus' appearance and throws him off the walls of olympus
@@jaker6531 As far as I know, the only son conceived with the help of a herb was Ares, and that only in a roman source. In the versions in which Hephaistos is fatherless Hera conceived him the same way Gaia, Nyx and Eris conceived their parthenogenetic children.
As for Hephaistos being thrown from Olympos by Zeus, that is indeed a version of the story, though the reason had nothing to do with his appearance. Rather, Hephaistos, fully grown at this point, had attempted to free Hera from her chains when Zeus had her publicly tortured, and Zeus really didn't appreciate his involvement in the matter.
This reads like a modern day retelling to make it seem more palatable to modern folks
Hephestaus didn’t actually make the Thunderbolts, their creation can be credited to the cyclops who forged them as a gift to help Zeus defeat the Titans.
Yeah but wasn’t he like put in charge of the cyclops since they were basically interested in the same stuff so the other gods were like “yeah you’re all ugly but useful, here go away and make our weapons” I’d say that they cyclops did make the thunderbolts but since Hephaestus was the main guy he gets the credit. It’s kinda like how if u work for Microsoft any prototypes or whatnot that you come up with while working for them is considered to be the property of the company and the CEO gets credit.
*I think they should atleast mention the cyclops or the worker who came up with the idea.*
@@yanii6665 i mean he was made after the titanomachy so i don’t know why they credited him with making thunder bolts. the war between the titans and the gods happened prior to the children of the gods
I think Hestia is more properly identified as the fire deity, but as she (very impressively) appears in even fewer myths than Hephaestus it's probably academic

Prolly because this is mythology
When Hephaestus chained up Prometheus, Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound shows Hephaestus suffering and complaining about how he had to chain up somebody that he considered a dear friend and a fellow craftsman, but Hephaestus was also too good of a son to disobey his father. I love this depiction of him! It shows that he's (usually) the best of the gods and other divines.

I love how evil Hera is and how underrated Hades is. Like leave the man alone.
Well people aren’t gonna portray women as bad because they simps. They blame Hades because he kidnapped a young girl but they don’t say that Hades’ brother told him it was okay. And many people who believe in the Christian god think that “Underworld” is synonymous with “Hell” which is bad to them so if Hades owns the Underworld, he owns Hell, and that must mean he’s bad

I didn't know much about the blacksmiths in mythologies unyil recently vecause i just recently started learning about it but i do know that i ALWAYS loved blacksmiths.. They're just so cool imo
I don't know why he's so mad at Aphrodite for cheating on him when he basically forced her to have to marry him lol. Like did he really expect things between them to be perfect after that?
Right? She didn't choose him, Zeus gave her to him.
I'm glad he divorced her
I don't know why hera is so mad at zeus cheating on her. She chose to be loyal, but then he'd fucked many goddesses and women... why is she cursing all of his children again?
Hephaestus was given Aphrodite as a wife and was prideful for having her. He even made her jewelry. He was trying to win her over. Is he just supposed to be this unfeeling being who was thrown away to die?
@@furyberserkI get what you’re saying, but from the myth I heard that explains why Zeus and Hera are married, it appears that Hera is in an abusive relationship she can’t leave. Zeus is powerful, way too powerful to be punished without consequence. So I guess she takes out her anger on zeus’s lovers? I don’t know, that’s what I gathered from it…

@@emmethefangirl8785 Yeah, the illustrations are really good now
Imagine if when Hephaestus dropped the net on Aphrodite and Ares, they kept going😳
11:40 I mean, given that Disney’s Zeus and Hera are depicted as a stable marriage with no cheating on Zeus’s part, it might not be either of those things. Instead, it would be more of a thing where Ares is infatuated with Aphrodite and hits on her from time to time, but she ain’t having none of that. So she takes matters into her own hands and sends the Cupids to keep Ares away so Hephaestus doesn’t have to worry. It would fit Aphrodite’s character in the related Hercules cartoon as she’s less a vapid trollop and more a love/relationship expert. I thus like this possibility as it makes her marriage to Hephaestus so, so sweet and wholesome for once.
Hephaestus was always my favorite god because I relate to him most.

I always look forward to your videos, you tell the backstory well, things that I didnt even know
I thought Zeus got his lightning bolt from the cyclopses after he freed them from Tartarus, prior to his war against the titans? That was long before Hephaestus was even born.
Anyway, I think the gods were actually very harsh on Hephaestus' looks. It's not that he was ugly, but he lived in a place where everyone else is a 10/10. Even being a 9/10 might make you get perceived as ugly. If it hadn't been for his crooked leg he might have been able to hang out with the rest of them. Still, he was one of the smartest and most cunning of the gods, and crossing him was always a bad idea.
There are a bunch of different ways Zeus gets his lightning that’s just the most popular
