  • Hi and welcome to Holistic Horse's "Ask the Expert." I am Caroline Beste of The Tao of Horsemanship. Today we are going to be discussing The "how to" when developing a safe and trustworthy trail horse, one that is happy to stay back with me, is calm, relaxed and brave. There is a lot of material to be covered in today's topic so I have broken it down into segments with today being "Developing a Trustworthy Trail Horse: Part II." This video is a continuation of last month's topic "Developing a Trustworthy Trail Horse: Part I."
    This month's segment delves into how important both relationship and leadership are when developing a horse that feels safe with us, thus is safe. Caroline explains how the ground work transfers over and into the riding and how important both focus and discipline, arena structure, are when further developing and maintaining our safe, calm and cooperative trail horse.
    Please refer to last month, June's, Part I for more details and demonstration on developing the mindset needed for safety: • How to Develop a Trust...
    Thank you and may you always be one with your horse!

    Your videos are so amazing and so helpful. Your videos are exactly what I needed to break through to a horse I got as a late 2 yr old. I could never get her focus and still struggle. Now I know what I need to work on with her to get her focus and partnership.

    I have watched both videos I and II and I understand you need your horses mind, focus, and obedience, but I didn't get ideas on how to do this from watching. It appears that this horse is perfect for her and has already come to that point. When I watch training videos it's helpful to have a horse with issues and to be shows exact methods on how to work with your horse. I love your thoughts, just would like to know how you got your horse to that point. Thank you

      Hi Trish! Thanks for your question! The horse in this video, Smokey, is a product of this work. He has been the most dangerous and difficult horse I have worked with thus far. While I do not show strategies or tips for the challenging horse owner, I do show specific exercises, techniques, that develop this level of relationship and partnership in both Part I and II. While I also don't have any horses in training that would qualify as challenging for this trail video I would not use them. You can't possibly teach someone how to handle a challenging horse, one with unpredictable issues, in a 20 minute video. Challenging horses are my specialty and I honor the time, commitment and patience it takes to help them make breakthroughs and progress. In the end there is no one answer to help a horse with issues. It's experience and skill that enables you to know which tool, approach, technique will work best for that horse and in that particular moment.
      This video is similar to my training DVD's in that it shows step-by-step techniques as well as sequels that offer strategies. In the end, the purpose of this video is to educate, offer a different training perspective and develop a trained eye in the person - to see the quality of what your looking for in attitude, willingness, response, relaxation and relationship shared in the work. I come across so many horse owners who come to me to not only re-train their horses but to also re-train themselves. Best to you! Caroline

    My horse is calm like this and does all of this when I ask all of these in the arena but when I ask him out on the trail (for I do most of my dressage work on the trail) he gets worked up and stops listening- out on the trail if I don't ask him to work he doesn't spook and he doesn't listen so how do I get him to work properly on the trail (I of course start slow and work him up and then work him down) but he is an extremely smart horse and a longer horse so keeping together he finds hard so tries to evade certain work then works himself up. Any tips would be welcome..

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 9 lety +1

      Kodee King Hi Kodee and welcome! If your horse is calm some of the time and anxious other times, something is missing in your trained eye (observant eye) as well as in your horse's training. The horse in this video is like every horse I train (please refer to my youtube channel for videos on horses in training).
      The end result of my training method is that each horse becomes responsive, relaxed and rhythmic (has cadence -consistent movement). This is as much about the mindset as it is about movement - the body reflects the mind. With this being said, your horse needs a foundation still and one where his mind is calm, relaxed, and responsive to your cues, anywhere and anytime.
      I recommend following my training method (which follows classical dressage) and starting over so-to-speak so you can find where the missing pieces are in your foundation. Foundation to me represents the following: horse has at least 2 years of systematic, logical process of education; is responsive to light aids (no kicking, pulling, extreme aids), relaxed when in work and when corrected (doesn't take it personally), rhythmic and regular in movement. This is just the first layer of what I look for when training and what I also take into every level esp advanced movements involving 2nd and 3rd level dressage. When a horse has this kind of mindset in training you can take it anywhere!
      Please check out my other training videos on youtube and please feel free to contact me personally to further discuss: Caroline@riderhorsemanship.com.
      Warmly,
      Caroline

    These videos are very helpful but just be honest and say "To get to this level of horsemen ship you must buy, purchase or join my monthly program". In my opinion it would be nice to be given a few of the steps and then if I can get them to work I would most certainly buy into the whole program. Just showing the finished product is wonderful but I would appreciate a taste of what the owner must do to get there. Regard Kris

    How do you teach your horse to come and get you at the mounting block? Do you repeat lining them up at the mounting block over and over, until they line up by themselves?

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Kimberly and Welcome! Horses picking you up from where ever you are (mounting block, fence, back of your truck etc) is a result of my training method. While most trainers make it happen and use all sorts of techniques and cues to get their horses to stand still, the horses I train offer their backs to me, leaning in, hugging me as I get ready to get on. This is what I refer to as "permission to get on." My method develops the relationship on a very deep level, meaning my method develops the holistic aspects (all 4) of the relationship so that you have complete oneness with your horse. Most specifically, my method develops the heartmath energy that is critical to the depth of relationship as well as safety. When a horse reveres you as one of their own, they will not only think about you, they will protect you - always.
      Please click here for more information about my method www.bodhi-wellness-center.com/about, www.taoofhorsemanship.com/ and should you be interested in learning how, check out my MasteryMembership Program www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/mastery-membership-landing-page

    How does arena work help you on the trail?

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  Před 10 lety +1

      Arena work is an excellent way, and best way in my experience, to help shape the mindset needed for trail riding calmly, with connection, in partnership and safely. It's not just about certain patterns you practice in the arena either. What counts is the level of focus your horse has, level of subtly in your aids and level of response your horse gives when you ask. I repeat the same patterns and techniques, years after years and never get a sour horse! I make the work interesting (the more you know the more you can ask and teach) and rewarding. The reward is in my love of the horse, praise, and most of all the relationship I share with my horses. We have conversations! I don't just force or make my horse. I guide and structure and reward so the reward motivates the try. Your horse will look forward to the work because you are both involved and there is so much to look forward to! Enjoy and may you always be one with your horse. Caroline Rider
