Hi Caroline, i really love your way of thinking cause it relates a lot how i'm thinking so it's refreshing to see this, i have a question from quebec Canada ahaha,, i'm taking a chance maybe you won't answer, when i educate my horse at liberty and in lounge, my main focus at first is to have their attention and for them to relax completely, i'm just there to "guide" them thru, when my horse is with me physically in front of me and calm, no tension, i noticed that even though they're with me physically, sometimes their ears are not, it's not pinned ears, their mental is not with me, before i would not notice that, so after a few session i will ask for them to be mentally present also,so if their ears were not with me i would send them off and draw them back immediately, i noticed though that with one of my horse, she had a hard time understand the concept , she would get frustrated and i was like losing what i had achieved with her, and it was like she was losing trust in me and in herself, my work with them is to as much for them to trust themself then in me, i was not asking for her to always be mentally present, it's like meditation so it's normal that it's hard at time to stay focus, so anyway i did only one session for now but i wanted to know your take on this, we finished on a good note, but i found her more nervous more worried about me, of course i did not finish that session with her being like this, i stayed with her, focus and waiting for her to release all tension in her body, thanks again

Caroline, your technique and intention resonates with me. I have a BLM-branded Mustang [Spanish type] that I adopted almost 2 years ago. she is very affectionate, LBI dominant over other horses. When she gets into a round pen or other small enclosed area, I see her trigger to [possibly] the mustang roundup experience and I can easily lose her. She will mirror me at liberty in a 5-acre pasture and is good under saddle although early on. Any ideas for helping her get over the 'I'm penned up and bad things are happening' time? She backs to me, bucks, basically flips out if she feels cornered, but works well in large area.Thanks for your videos!

Yes, your Mustang is being triggered into past memory. You need to change her experience in the round pen. You can begin by keeping her online and just spend 5-10 sessions being with her in there and loving on her, even feeding her in there.
Once you can visibly see her relax more when in the pen with you, re-introduce the work and keep her online, do not allow her to free lunge, not for a while.
You will need to take this process one-step-at-a-time. SLOW way down, 10 x slower than you think so you can see every little change in her, every expression that tells you she is getting worried. See, you won't be able to help her, change her behavior and opinion about the round pen until you can catch her thought and change her thought first - before she commits to the action.

Thank you! Even in the last week, as I have watched more of your work, I have been grooming and 'hanging' with her in the enclosure and have seen her start to change and relax. she will be a work in progress for a while as she is an 07 wild-caught horse who never was trained or ridden before, but she is a sweetie. Loses her cool at long distance but I will follow your advice and am working with a trainer who uses a lot of similar techniques as well. Love your work, please keep posting!!
I believe wind brings more sound and more smell which is why they get more nervious, as they can smell and ear things blowing their way. Which is how they may know danger in the wild.
You said so many things that validated my relationship with Bear . He’s 9 months in a few day . Only have had him 3 mos. He has run and kicked and played in a round pen and a pasture . Should I be just letting Bear be a baby? I love your message continuously to get there trust . And to watch your horse as you connect with them . Eyes , ears , mouth , Breathing into my Horses space very calmly . You do that ! Yay! I so agree with not sacking out . I have seen it over and over with Horses who are pushed to such fear . Bear isn’t afraid of anything I show Him . I take my time . Show him what i am doing with whatever is in my Hand .. Always use a soft voice . No fearful reaction or flight response has happened with Him . Tomorrow will be windy. I will not ask a lot as He is recovering from being gelded a few days ago anyway. Hi Laura! Awesome to hear! All young horses need an education and it's what you teach them and how you teach them that matters. There's so much handling and leading and manners and behaviors you can mold when they are young. Most people start them under saddle way too young though and ride and work them way too fast. There's nothing wrong with putting a few rides on a 2 year old, that's IF they are mentally ready, mature. My 4 year old was not ready at 2 and had I tried, it would have been awful for us both. That's why so many resort to harshness, force and dominance with young horses. They are not mature enough at 2 or 3 years to handle what's they are being presented with and act out, trying to tell us it's not working and end up getting beaten down, run down, their spirits broken. That's where the term "dead broke" and "broke to ride" came from. They ran them into the ground. Coming back into a relationship with a Horse , I knew it would be different with a Baby . I was not concerned about when i would ride Him . Hi there
I have a problem with my 28 month colt. I take him for a walk in the morning and when we come back he doesn't walk back home. If i go in another direction he would go but he doesn't go in the certain direction and mostly not in the direction to home. Do you have any solution to this?

Caroline Volandt-Beste hi. I was just rewatching this video and reread my comment and your reply. And I got really excited because I have the dvd.
How would you suggest I get my horse to allow me to approach him in the pasture? To catch him, I have to fed him in the stall and shut the door. He never lets me come up and pat him otherwise. He was previously mistreated, but I have had him about 6 months now and have done nothing but groom, bathe, lead him about the farm, and love on him. It’s very discouraging but he has a forever home with me, so I won’t give up on him. He is only 7-8 for reference, and the person who had him before me bought him from the breeder, sent him to a trainer, and put him in the pasture. So he’s been sitting for years until I bought him.
Would you do the same thing, with sending him out with a more highstrung and anxious high energy horse, or would you do something different?
Hi Jessie. My goal when working with new horses is always to come from a place of ease, comfort and grounded energy. This is where we begin and where we connect. This sense of ease and the bond, are the glue that binds and creates the desire to want to be with you and stay connected to you. The answer to your question has many angles meaning while I keep presenting what I know the horse needs (mentioned above) I may need to change my tactics, or strategy, depending on what the horse presents. Now, with high strung horses, I definitely want to help them ground and keep bringing them in to find that ease with me. It may take 20 takes before they accept me. The only time I will send a horse out and it's only for a few strides before I ask them back in is if they are not trying and/or if I have a horse that shuts down, freezes and cannot get out of their comfort. I will send out, again, few strides, and the purpose is to wake them up, help them tune into me, trust me so they can connect. Hope that helps:) Caroline
