How do you cope with fear? What happens when you ignore your emotions?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, filmmaker Alan Seawright, and guest Emma McAdam of @TherapyinaNutshell are reacting to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The therapists discuss Puss’s fear of death and how that shows up mentally and physically, especially with panic attacks. Emma explains how acceptance and commitment therapy would be an effective tool for Puss to confront his fear. Alan talks about how fantastic the animation style and direction are, but then he forgets how to say words. Anyway, we think Perrito would be a wonderful therapy dog. What do you think?

Exactly! I’ve had panic attacks before and it felt so real watching Puss going through that too. I remember watching this and my boyfriend immediately going for my hand, asking if I was gonna be okay watching this. I got a little nervous with hearing the heartbeat and he reminded me to do my breathing techniques to help me come out of it.
And it's also just so accurate that a good dog can just be there and help with that. Just with their loving presence

25:43 Fun fact: When Puss is using his gatito blade alongside his rapier, he's fighting with the same style as the Spanish tercios (17th century soldiers and mercenaries): Espada y Daga (sword and dagger), which was probably one of the most effective dueling styles at the time, and certainly more effective usually than just the rapier. In other words, after letting go of his past rejection of emotions and embracing the support his loved ones give him, he became both a better person and a better duelist.

When I started having panic attacks, we adopted a very cuddly cat. Best helper ever. She even learned to notice stress in me, so when I'm frantic, she will come up to me and start meowing untill I sit down and let her lie on me. She is amazing. Not trained or anything, just a great cat.

I have the same thing! My cat isn't trained, but when I'm depressed or panicked, he will either meow at me to get me to move (depression) or meow loudly enough to alert someone else (panic). Cats are such joys.
Dude when I had anxiety attacks during middle school due to some bullying, nothing made me feel better than my cats. I don't know how they knew when I was stressed but man they felt it for sure, and nothing made me feel better than cuddling with them. What was crazy was that neither of them normally liked being touched or petted but if I was getting an anxiety attack they would let me hug them n stuff like that. Even to this day if somebody's yelling or upset they'll meow and get between people until it stops. Amazing animals, even if they bite my ankles when they're hungry lol.
Similar! Double whammy for us, my husband with anxiety & me with chronic depression. But, we have the sweetest little boy cat that’ll come & cuddle up right under the chin. Don’t take these wonderful loving creatures for granted ❤.

I tear up every time I see the panic attack scene. Not only it being so accurate, but the idea of just having someone there who just waits with you, and reassures you, when everything feels out of your control.
It sure would have made all the difference when I started having them.
It reminds me of a friend of mine who would just hold me tight and say "shhh, it's ok" until I calmed down, no matter how long it took. She really helped me until I was able to calm myself down without help from others. I miss her.
and Perrito did what therapy dogs are trained to do. He put pressure on Puss's body to ground him and help him get his breathing under control

Fear keeps us safe, shame keeps us humble, guilt keeps us honest, loneliness keeps us together, even anxiety let's us know when something is wrong. For me, understanding why we even have these emotions helps me manage myself better.
Yes! And I'd add grief lets us know who and what we value.

Devil's Advocate moment: Fear makes us irrational, shame adjusts our moral compass at the time, guilt makes us grovel when wrong, loneliness makes us vulnerable, and anxiety waits in the background for sudden problems that verify its existence. /end devil advocacy?

If it comes up I always like to take a page from a GoT question when trying to identify which subordinate leader to take with them in the field versus leave behind to guard a castle: "Is it better to be fearless or brave?" They are similar but one has a downside.
@@christinaify Well, the fact that all these emotions have a purpose doesn't stop our stupid human brains from over complicating things, and misapplying them all over the place.
Death is just so great, one of if not the best DreamWorks antagonist ever. I like how, at the start, Puss was bragging about having "never been touched by a blade." So the moment Death was actually able to cut him, Puss became a scared, anxious mess. It's the moment he realized he's not invincible after all.
I still say Rameses is still the best Dreamworks antagonist as I’d argue that movie is their best film they’ve ever done, but I have to say…I didn’t expect to enjoy the heck out of One Last Wish as much as I did! I caught the Wolf being Death pretty quickly because of he were a bounty hunter he would have tried harder to catch Puss…plus the coins in his eyes at the one point was a dead (pun intended) giveaway, but that whistle…THAT WHISTLE still chills me!

@@jenniferhiemstra5228 you could also say that Death is the best antagonist, and Ramses is the best villain. Because Death is an antagonist, his only real motivation for going after Puss is to teach him to learn to value his life, and the moment that Puss finally does so at the end, he lets him go. Where as Ramses, is more of a sympathetic villain where you understand his motivations, but he never really comes around. And he's definitely more of an obstacle that the main character has to overcome, where as Death is just a foil for Puss character development. Jack Horner would be more of a villain in this movie, because of the fact that he is just straight-up an awful person.
Fun fact! Death is dual wielding khopeshes which are Egyptian sickle swords. They were originally used to harvest grain before being turned into a sword. This is such a fantastic choice because it has the same symbolism of a scythe without completely giving away the twist (unless you're a freak who had an African sword phase in high school)

Hi, former EMT here. The weighted blanket actually helps from a strictly anatomical perspective, too. :) The added weight pushing down on your chest triggers the autonomous nervous system and your body basically gets put into sleep mode. Your heart and breathing calm down and stressful thoughts are easier to let go of. We've frequently used weighted blankets to help disaster witnesses on scene out of panic attacks. Exclusively positive experiences with this on my end.
For me, they feel restricted and I feel restrained if any weight is on me.
One or two or three or all four of our kitties would come sit on me in bed at night. They obviously enjoy the extra softness and warmth, and until their weight numbs my arms / legs, it can be quite nice for me too. I do wake up with sore neck and back sometimes because someone takes up the whole pillow at night, but generally it is pleasant to have a soft and warm kitty curled up asleep on top of you :)

The second I saw the accurate depiction of Puss having a panic attack in the face of a near death experience and then being calmed down by a therapy dog, I said “Oh, CT has to do this one!”

It’s one of those things that I dislike about how people treat animation especially when targeted towards children because some people feel like it needs to be dumbed down and neutered to the point of almost being a useless parody for children to be able to understand it

children are nature’s idiots but they are not stupid they have to learn and most are willing to if you format it in a way they like
The early 2000’s teen titans had a episode where they had a racial plot everyone but starfire(an alien from another planet) was being treated fairly the episode even threw in a slur for her people that her friends mistakenly started using as a term of endearment before learning that it translated to nothing aka worthless
Racism can be a heavy subject to approach but the episode is very good and that’s what I mean by how people toss animation to their children like they don’t respect their audience enough to actually use the concept it has to be so watered down that it’s nearly nonexistent
@@CrazyGamebino Children pretty much have high level mental faculties but next to no experience. Makes them very prone to bounce between extremes on the intelligence scale, but they're definitely capable of understanding anything you throw at them if you give them the chance and have a bit of patience to fill in their knowledge gaps.

Ya'll are giving me a much deeper respect and appreciation for Perrito's character. We always see, in movies, people wanting MORE. The Disney Princesses all have their iconic "I want" songs and usually the common factor that they want is MORE. People want more money, more time, more more more. It is actually really nice to see a character who DOESN'T want more...who is completely comfortable and happy with his life, exactly the way it is, even having been abandoned, multiple times, by his family and having just a sweater and 2 best friends. It makes him a very sweet and endearing character.
That’s fair! But the Disney characters you’re referring to didn’t want more for the mere sake of wanting more, it was literally because they were the black sheep of wherever they were. They felt so out of place that it’s very normal to want out of where you are in that scenario. They weren’t materialistic, they just knew there was more to life than being stuck being different then everyone else around them. And the beauty of those same characters are that they overall found their happiness in an unexpected place and that’s great too! Did Belle go searching for her soulmate? No she wanted a more adventurous life, but she found an adventure close to home and she found equal happiness there :)
But yes, we can all learn for Perrito too! Because what everyone else wants the wishing star for are selfish reasons, but Perrito is clearly supposed to be the character of pure intention. Think Harry searching for the sorcerers’ stone. Only the one with pure intentions is supposed to get it. Nothing wrong with striving for something else in life )Jono even said something to this effect in a recent video…don’t remember which) because it keeps us from being static but it’s when it becomes selfish and harmful to ourselves and others that it becomes a problem.

@@TheSchaef47 To be fair though, this is comparing main characters in Disney films to a side character. Don't get me wrong, Perrito is a great character, but there's a reason the film is about Puss, not him, because a character who is already happy and content from the start means there's no arc to go through.
Plus, while Disney is noted for all their "I want" songs they tend to use them to contrast that with what a character needs. Hercules sings about wanting to find where he belongs and at the start of the movie he believes that place is on Mount Olympus, but at the end of the movie when he actually gets there he realizes that where he belongs is back on earth. Aladdin wants to live in the palace, but at the end of the film when given the chance to use his third wish to be a prince he instead wishes for the genie to be free. Simba wants to become a king because he thinks that means he could do whatever he wants ("free to run around all day, free to do it all my way") but instead he learns that it is about accepting responsibility.
This is an arc Puss goes through where he searches for the star in order to get more lives but ends up accepting his own mortality.

The slight widening of Puss’s eyes at the end during the stare down with Death is one of my favorite details. To me, it shows Puss finally recognizing his own mortality, and not with fear like the other times, but rather with regard and awe. A very unique touch to a great film.
hmm, I still think/see it as him being scared... but he has also accepted death. He will fight all he has got to keep on living, and yeah, death is scary and there, but while he is alive?... well, even scared, he will continue living.
Personally I dont see the awe part. Still, I appreciate you sharing your perspective in the movie (im not shooting you down, just giving mine in turn!)

I interpreted more as a, "Okay thank god now I can breathe for a second after all of this/he's finally giving me a break," but still in a sense where he's changed his perspective on the topic and something he's come to accept despite it taking an entire journey to, metaphorically and literally 😊I feel like it'd take that much time, especially as hard as a topic as death to work through. And in a healthy way. 👀 Hell death definitely still scares me, but I'd like to hope when it comes I won't feel like my life amounted to nothing. Yet now that I'm really thinking about it, I want to start reevaluating how I measure that worth.
Overall, this movie hit like a ton of bricks. The panic attack scene broke me in tears and when the reveal came that the wolf was ACTUALLY death I was like OH FUCK. It made me start to panic too like shieeettt.
Anyways, just thought I'd share my views as well and love hearing what people have to say about this film
Something I've really liked about the last fight between Puss and Death is that Puss would have lost if not for the gatito blade Kitty gave him. A dagger he swallowed his pride to even take and use but also a gift from a loved one. That dagger carries a lot of meaning. Also, using a dagger while welding a rapier is an actual swordplay technique. I love all the details in this film.

Death is genuinely scary for kids and adults in a kids movie. He isn’t dramatically over exaggerated nor comically underplayed. Depicting Death as a wolf is also much scarier to a cat than making him another dog that Puss could easily out smart and maneuver.
I don't think I'd ever scared by an animation character like Death before.

I always associated the wolf design with the Big Bad Wolf, which is pretty much the role he plays in this movie. Not an enemy to be defeated, the only way to survive is to learn the lesson the story is trying to teach
When I was a kid, I was scared of Death. The thought of my body being rigid, not feeling anything, no breathing and being still for the rest of time. But over time, I got over it after losing a few close relatives over the years, I know we can’t escape Death nor we can cheat it. We just have to learn to accept and live our lives, even if the shadow of Death is still out there.
The one character I really love in this movie is Perrito. His backstory is so horrible and sad, yet he still has so much optimism, appreciates all the good things in life, and just wants to help people. He's a perfect foil to Puss and Kitty who helps them both overcome their problems. We could all learn a thing or two from Perrito.
Oh I love him, easily my favorite.
His life was so horrendous even the wishing star itself thought that Perrito deserved it 💀
It's funny how he starts the movie almost seeming like he's going to be the annoying mascot sidekick, but then he instead turns into the heart of the movie with his sunny optimism and surprisingly high emotional intelligence. And he manages to be darkly hilarious with the foul mouth he picked up through his backstory.

Yesss and the way how even when they didn’t win and get that wish, they still “won”. They walked along that thorny path, they did some bad and some recklessness here and there, but they carried through. By the end, they didn’t need the wishing star/scroll. They needed that realisation. The realisation that once they worked hard enough to fix themselves, to get help and support from others, to step back and stop just for a moment, They had what it takes to make their wish into reality. That wish was a goal and they have made it.

You know how to go into your old messages and such and think «God than I thought when I wrote it.» He shouldn’t forget who he was, and Puss had to see the difference in points of view. At that moment, he finally realized that «The Hero who always works alone» is not for him, he was tired of it and wants light happiness, not glory from strangers and no one there to sincerely support him.
He changed on his way to the Star and he realized it.
He was led by fear, but it was also accepted at the end.

Actually, Perito's map exactly the reverse and an attempt to make him realise of how grim the worlf is. Pocket full of posies is a reference to the black plague, the river of relaxation an allusion to depression, and the "quick and easy solutions" is a euphemism for suicide. It's just all hidden behind is positive attitude, to the point that no character actually picks up on it, even while reading the map.

The Cave of Lost Souls was supposed to make Puss realize how he wasted his past lives, but Death's intrusion messed it up and pushed him to want them back.
20:30 this line hit me like a ton of bricks: “we all have immaturity and insecurity to work through, and if we wait until we’ve worked through all of it to have a relationship, the human race will die.” I’ve been so scared of entering a romantic relationship because the perfectionist inside me keeps saying I need to “fix” my flaws on my own first. I've spent a decade feeling that perfectionist way towards seeking romantic relationships. Avoiding them. It's easy to have happen since life always throws us new curveballs as soon as we start to feel some sense of peace again after the past ones. For the very first time in my life, though, I fell in love, a little over a month ago. It didn't happen thru me looking for it. Instead, it happened because I was open to seeing what would happen with the person who approached me. I felt the compatibility during casual conversation upon meeting them. I would have been fine with us just being friends. But when I was asked out on a date I chose to say "yes." Equally importantly, from the very start with them every time I was asked about something about myself I chose to do the scary thing of giving them the straight, honest answer instead of presenting an idealized image. I have shown flaws that I haven't been brave enough to ever show anyone else. I think the reason the relationship has been working is because the other person has been doing the same.
Someone once told me that the right person wouldn't notice the things that I dislike about myself, because instead they would be too taken by my beauty to notice. I don't think that's it at all. Instead, I think it's that the imperfections are part of what make a person who they are and therefore seeing them allows us to love the full, beautifully imperfect package. Mutual patience and mutual acceptance. It is a precious gift to know what each other wishes to overcome and to be there during the journey. I hope my relationship lasts (a month is barely any time at all in the grand scheme of life!!), and I hope you will get to experience the same thing sometime soon. I hope every perfectionist out there reading this gets to! I don't think I have any tangible advice about how to find it, since all I did was to be open to seeing what happened (open to going on a date when someone else approached me and then terrifyingly honest about myself), but I hope you will get to experience it! 💝
When you find the right person your insecurities that pop up wont scare them away. Then you get a loving environment to continue to work on them without fear of rejection or abandonment. It is truly a beautiful experience

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer last summer and passed away in October. He said he lived a good life, had a good 81 years, and was ready to go. The only fear he had was making sure my mom, whom is significantly younger than he was, was going to be taken care of. Mom had a very successful career so he was not necessarily scared for her financially, but instead wanted to make sure she was supported emotionally. I told him I'd always take care of her and that seemed to settle him.
I miss him every day but knowing he walked into death with little to no fear brings me so much happiness.

It's been ten years for my dad, it doesn't necessarily get easier, but when you struggle to remember him after this long, it's a bit difficult to have fresh wounds (unless you do grief therapy, I suppose). It's... bizarre.
Something i love about perrito in the panic attack scene, is that he waits to start talking or ask questions, until puss says something first, indicating hes ready to speak now. Like thats one of the greatest indicators that not only is he a character that is consistent and doesn't exist to just be some annoying comedic character to sell toys or whatever. He has a consistent characterization, and narrative purpose in the themes throughout the entire movie. He says he wants to be a therapy dog, and he actually is a damn good one. He doesn't have to go through any arc because hes already at the end of his arc, and his purpose is what the other characters can learn from him. Its SO GOOD!!! to just have an emotionally healthy character, that isnt some super cool grand master mentor, hes just a good guy, that has merit just by being himself!!! ❤❤❤
I was shock of how genuine Perrito is. I really thought that during the panic attack scene, he is gonna go “come rub my belly!”. But nope, he genuinely cares for Puss and tries to comfort him in a very serious manner.

This was never a test to help Puss grow into something more than he was, he REALLY wanted to kill this cat.
No doubt, he did. His motive wasn’t to teach Puss a lesson. It was to take that last life, personally.
But, when he saw that Puss HAD changed, his desire to take that last life passed. A combination of frustration and resignation. Death pauses to confirm that Puss knows this is a temporary reprieve, which Puss acknowledges with humility.

Honestly the panic attack scene is by far the best scene imo. I've never experienced one before, but the way Puss' breath quickens and his heart races feels so real. And when Perrito finds him no words need to be said, Perrito sees he's in trouble and lays his head on his chest, "I'm here," and it's so real and so beautiful
yeah panic attacks are no joke and can be triggered more easily and happen more often if they aren't treated quickly enough, it's an overwhelming sense of fear and helplessness that your body responds to. Taking deep breaths has been proven to slow your heart rate and tell your body/brain that you're safe.

I think its more about how some of us deal with such overwhelming tragedy and loss, especially so early on in our lives. We can spend days crying and lamenting how cold and heartless others can be, but at the end of all that we are exhausted and drained yet still have to think about where / when our next meal will be and where our bed will lay. Time provides distance, so over the course of many years we can look back to realise the actions and thinking of those who did us wrong, were trivial at best and pitiful at worst. We are still alive, regardless of how much of our past was salvaged, so everything we discover in life from then on is a blessing and a gift - for we only have ourselves, our time and our company to offer in exchange to express our gratitude.

the panic attack scene is so damn good. it breaks me down every time i see it because its so damn accurate. I also had used to have a dog who was a great emotional support animal who passed away 2 years ago, so i think of her everytime i see perrito just relax his head on puss's lap. its exactly what my dog used to do for me when i got panic attacks.

This movie blew my mind. The first Puss in Boots is just a film that exists, Last Wish is profound, exciting, hilarious, and full of emotion, and terrific character development.
The original film is okay. The only problem with the first Puss In Boots is that the sequel was too good. Like I seriously have no idea how it managed to be better than all of the Shrek movies including the “good ones”. It makes Shrek 2 look lazy by comparison. And Shrek 2 was the last “good one” though I have a soft spot for the 4th movie and consider it to be a sign of the darker themes we finally got.

Re: the fuzzy sound and blurry vision - the way it has been explained to me was that your blood pressure can get so bad it puts pressure on your eardrums and ocular nerves. This is the single most accurate portrayal of a panic attack I've ever seen, other than his relatively quick recovery (which I get, narratively - though I love the little detail of him taking a dry-mouthed gasp as he steadies himself). I've watched the clip many times over and it still makes me anxious. The animators put so much love and empathy into that scene because it really can feel like you are dying. The last time I had one was so bad I ended up in the hospital, which was embarrassing after 20 years of having them, but with this one I legitimately thought I was having a stroke. I lost control of my limbs, everything was so cold I couldn't feel anything, and I couldn't speak. And it went on for *hours* because I was so scared that I was dying. The physical effects are like dominos when we have really bad panic attacks. Our bodies can do *wild* things to us.
Honestly I've known people who come out of panic attacks surprisingly quickly. Like it passes suddenly instead of gradually and they just go straight to being exhausted. So it's not necessarily unrealistic depending on the person.
I’m personally going through a period of existential dread of death that literally keeps me awake at night, so this movie means so much to me. I’ve seen it SO MANY times and it always says new things to me. I’m currently living as Puss in the retirement home, so this movie is really trying to call me out, lol. The anxiety attack makes me SOB.

Last Wish is aimed at children, yet treats panic attacks more accurately than Velma, which is supposedly an adult animation. The Velma writers could learn a thing or two from Puss in Boots!
No use. "Adult" in western animation means "Sex, violence, drugs, asshole characters. Now laught". Kinda ironic, it ends up coming out like something an edgy preteen made while PG-13 stuff ends up more mature and realistic but it's the sad truth

The only reason this movie is PG is because Dreamworks likely isn't allowed to up their rating due to reputation, etc. But they sure as heck pushed the limit, and this is one of those movies that deserves to be considered a story for _everyone_ . Not just kids.
It's animation, it's a story, it's an insanely relatable lesson and plot-line with so much reality check mixed into that I can't bring myself to call this a "kid's film".
There is no way the people who made this movie created it with only children in mind.

@@alyssabullock6421 It’s not a kids film. It’s an “everybody” film. My 5 year old daughter LOVES this movie and sings that “Favorite Fearless Hero” song all the time. She thinks the “Grim Reaper Wolf” finished off Big Jack off screen. And my husband isn’t a movie person, much less so for animation, and this is the only thing he will watch with us aside from Bluey. And Bluey is the only thing outside of the news and crime dramas that he will watch.
This film scores additional points when you realise Puss's character development is literally and metaphorically represented by the Gatito Blade. The addition of a parrying dagger to Puss's hyper-aggressive fencing style allows him to, well, *_parry_* and defend himself. It gives him a literal advantage during the final confrontation with Death _and_ represents his newfound urge to protect himself and his last life.
Before someone in an actually abusive relationship hears the commentary at 20:00 please do know that if you are in a legitimately off relationship and it's not just regular downs that could be overcome-- do actually distance and set boundaries from people who aren't good for you. I have been in therapy and have learned that just because I'm open and willing to change and yield tools for growth-- doesn't mean others will be willing to do so and accept accountability. Don't feel guilty for doing what is right for you. Being an adult isn't about learning how to settle for less.
Yeah I think their point is to be able to differentiate what is an actual toxic relationship and what is just regular ups and downs. Because if you treat a bad day as a sign that you need to leave your partner, that could be very bad.

Yes, this. I also don't think that the epidemic of loneliness is because of what Emma described. I think it's much more complicated, deeper and widespread than "people have become too picky or selective." I see so so so many healthy messages about setting and having boundaries that were non-existent 20 years ago. If this means people spend less time in unhealthy situations overall, this is a *good* thing.
As someone who is currently in an abusive relationship, who had already done 10+ years of work to heal and cut off contact from abusive family of origin before entering into this relationship, I appreciate the wealth of messaging about setting boundaries and reminders about what I don't have to tolerate.

From what I remember, Trolls did feel like it was made specifically for kids unlike movies such as Puss in Boots or How to train your dragon which feel like movies meant for kids but also other ages. However, as much as people like to meme about it, Trolls tackles some interesting topics in very creative ways. And, although it's very much a taste thing, I think the style of animation is absolutely gorgeous.
This style of animation was made popular by Spiderman into the Multiverse. This movie might not have been as stunning without Disney leading the way
One moment I love is when Puss uses the little cat blade during the big fight.
Even though he is physically alone while battling Death, he relies on his friends (through the use of the blade) in his time of need. In the beginning of the film, he wouldn't have done that. He says himself that Puss works alone. But by the end, he realises that not only its okay to have help from others but that he cant make it out alive unless he accepts that his friends are there to help
It also works cuz not only is that when helps him fight against death, but it shows to death that he’s changed. Death loses that one match cuz he didn’t realize Puss has changed, and when he realizes that Puss is actually is scared of death, but is ready to fight for the life he has, he decides Puss should live.
Kitty's theme plays in that moment, too, which is very cool.
I went to see this movie on the day of my 26th birthday. I felt a little silly, admitting that is genuinely what I wanted to do with my time, but I had heard praise for its depiction of a panic attack. I've been stuck in constant terror mode for the last 9 years, and this movie had me sobbing. I knew it would have a panic attack in it, but I didn't know the entire movie would be about fear! It could not have come at a more perfect time in my life. It's absolutely in my list of all time favorites now. It's rare to find a movie that hits heartfelt, action, comedy, with a bit of horror AND be gorgeous all at once.
When I was 17, I was hit by a car. It was the second time in my life. And it completely changed my perspective of life afterwards. I decided I'd stop being afraid of dying, and instead I would just live every day in a way that I'd be okay leaving off on. Being kind to everyone is one of those ways, but being kind to myself is bigger. I love that you guys touched on that fear being normal and using it to drive yourself rather than to hide

I can’t even describe how much I love this movie. Death is the coolest interpretation of Death I’ve seen. The Panic Attack scene is so relatable but also it’s cool it’s in a kids movie. Anxiety doesn’t discriminate, even on age. I’ve had a couple panic disorder since I was young. Kids who have panic attacks can see it and relate. And the ART STYLE is beautiful.
What's even more mind blowing is that he's only in about 10 minutes of the movie and is only LITERALLY on screen for about 5.5 minutes... and yet he has such a huge impact on the movie.
So true. Kids media is often watered down and sugarcoated, afraid to touch on serious topics of mental health, mortality, and more. But kids do think about these things, they just don't understand it yet. Kids media should be offering more positive representation like this, to help them not only understand what they are going through and feel heard, but even to look for help and solutions when they saw none.

When my daughter started therapy I mentioned that she had been having panic attacks, and she argued that she hadn't. After we watched this she was ready to admit that she'd had panic attacks.

On a separate note, regarding those who think that Kitty didn't show up at the wedding, here are my thoughts on why I think she absolutely did show up:
1) She spends the first half of the movie clearly being pissed at Puss for something, and by the way that he grabbed her by the tail, it's clear that they know each other more than simple acquaintances (hinting at a deeper relationship)
2. From seeing how she double-crossed Goldi and the bears, we know that she's more than willing to lie if she seems it necessary
3. Kitty's wish, as shown by the map, is all about companionship, so why wouldn't she show up at the wedding (as marriage is often seen as the ultimate companionship)
4. She overhears Puss tall about Santa Caloma with Perrito and how much he regrets it
5. If she didn't show up, how would she know that Puss didn't show up (i.e. being left at the altar implies that you're at the altar in the first place)
6. If she didn't show up, wouldn't that make her a bit of a hypocrite, and thus lessen the severity of Puss' wrongdoing?
Which then leads me to why she would lie about not showing up
1. She is helping Puss not to wallow in self-loathing, since she can already see that he's sorry
2. She's making the point about why would she want to show up for "that guy" (i.e. Puss' narcissistic legendary self), and acknowledging how much she's seen him change
I hope this is a sufficient explanation for that particular sequence, because that seems to be where most people are confused with this movie.

@@g.d.graham2446 Respectfully, I disagree. While I see your points why she did show up I think there is still a gray area. Your argument for that seems to be based on "how did she know tho?" which is valid but there could be plenty of explanations that just weren't explored in depth.
1. Maybe she was intending on going but realized that Puss was getting cold feet. That could have made her realize "I'm not going to show up because he's not going to show up".
2. She could have heard from another source (the pastor? the guests? someone else?) that Puss didn't show up either.
3. Kitty maybe wasn't even mad about it in the first place. Obviously they hadn't talked since before the wedding. Maybe she was more mad about being abandoned and never talked to since over the wedding.
I'll also add that canonically Kitty isn't really the type to do things simply to make people feel better. She lies. She offers compassion. She doesn't seem like the type to truly hide how something impacted her though. She hid her wish but she didn't hide her inital anger or attempt to hide her pain when Puss left her and Pietro. In my opinion, Kitty seems more likely to have comforted Puss by not including the bit she didn't show up if she truly didn't. She probably would have simply gone "Hey it's fine. I know I couldn't actually compete with your one true love anyway." She didn't need to lie so why would she have? I'm not saying your interpretation of how she acts is wrong, I think it's still on point. It's just not how I view her. While it wouldn't have been like her to lie in that context, she could have very well pushed that aside to comfort her old partner.
There's too many variables is what it boils down too. That's why I think there's no correct answer. I think it's meant to be up to the viewer. It was so vague and the story doesn't change significantly either viewpoint. I'd say that if that's how you chose to interpret the story, that's great. I think that it isn't an argument though against the other side because it's just as significant.

I seriously cried when Perrito rested his chin on Puss In Boots. It was so sweet. Also, that whistle will haunt me forever
I saw this movie in an old theater. That moment when Death growls in Puss' face (26:30) the bass from his growl SHOOK THE THEATER. The panic attack initially sold me on this movie, but the intensity of Death in that moment brought me in to see the movie again. I echo Alan at 21:44. "I like movies that are good. More please."
a moment that always makes me slightly choked up was when puss gets cut for the first time and we see his literal lives flashing. his introduction to the orphanage, the way he sees Imelda, the first time he gets his boots, the adventures he has with shrek and how happy he was with them overall just makes you feel like you’re there with puss. i loved the original puss in boots movie, grew up with it too and seeing the flashbacks happen from the original movie AND the shrek series?? genuinely makes you believe he could’ve died right there in which creates the fear in the viewer as well for death bc puss made it feel like we were invincible too. I’ve over analyzed this scene too many times but it is such a great reminder of appreciation for your life no matter how grand or boring it may be
It would be so cool for them to do Villain Therapy on all three antagonists: Death, Jack Horner, and Goldilocks. They all serve such specific and unique purposes in the story and are done so well.
I don't think Death needs a villain therapy. Death has always been Death, there is no conflict to resolve like Goldie and Jack Horner. He's just a collector, he arrives when your time comes. I think he's mentally the healthiest antagonist of the movie because of the very deliberate person he always has been. He's Death, straight up

it took reading this comment to realize that the movie has three villlains. Like, I knew all of them were villains but I never put it together that this is a 100 minute movie with three villains, and all of them work. That's incredibly hard to pull off (just think of Spiderman 3, which had a lot more time and still messed it up). Makes me like this movie even more.

Jack Horner - 1-dimensional pure evil villain (chaotic evil) that is vindictive, cruel, and narcissistic (basically your classic Disney evil villain) who remains evil and faces dire consequences in the end. But he is fun, funny and effective against our heroes.
Death - 2-dimensionsal somewhat evil villain (lawful evil) that is menacing, dark and competent. I say somewhat evil because at the end of the day, he's doing his job as death. He's holding a mirror to Puss who doesn't value his life, so there is a poinant message behind his motivation. BUT there is a certain maliciousness to his character because he enjoys tormenting his targets and making "the chase" fun. Not to mention, he threatens to cut Puss's last life short before his "supposed time" basically to save himself the trouble and because he despises Puss. But in the end, he is fair. He lets Puss go for now to live out his life, because both of them know they will meet each other again (bone-chilling).
Goldilocks - 3-dimensional antagonist (chaotic neutral) that is sympathetic, loving, mischevious, a bit sadistic at times with a misguided motivation (she fits the mold of the redeemable, sympathetic villains we typically see today). I say anatgonist rather than villain because there is nothing in Goldi that is particularly evil; the only thing that makes her an antagonist is that she gets in the way of our heroes, which is the role of an antagonist. She is the one that receives the redemption arc in the end because she realizes her misguided intentions and does the right thing-appreciate the family she already has.
It's unbelievable that they managed to squeeze so much villain characterization in one film and at the same time, it did not feel overcrowded. Each one got the time they needed, and served their purpose. And what's really interesting is all of them are not only mirrors to our three heroes, but all of them teach different lessons surrounding the theme of the movie to "value life."
Many years ago, audiences wanted a Goldi character-villains that have a point and/or are sympathetic in some way-in response to the typical Jack character-classic pure villains that are evil for the sake of being evil. But it seems today's media has overcorrected where you always have redeemable villains, or no villains at all. They wanted a Jack Horner back. This movie gave us that and more, with the addition of Death who is somewhere in between.
Goes to show that all three can work depending on their execution and the story you are trying to tell :)
All the villains in this movie are my favourite villains of all time (so far, so don’t come after me unless your favourite villain is Hans from Frozen or something)
2 therapy channels coming together to therapeutically analyze a movie is something that I'm living for. Especially the thought of "grieving" your past self.
I love kitty's "that was the saddest funny story I've ever heard" remark to purrito bc as someone who grew up w childhood trauma I thought was normal I hear that exact thing all the time and I found it very relatable. 😅
I think my favorite thing about Perrito in the panic attack scene is that he’s actually using a real therapy dog technique called deep pressure therapy, which works very similar to how a weighted blanket would. It shows a bit of character development for him, because when he mentions the fact that he wants to be a therapy dog, he’s convinced that people will feel better if they rub his belly. In that scene however, he knows that that’s not what Puss needs, so he makes adjustments to his technique in order to best help his friend. From a writing standpoint, it’s an excellent piece of subtle character development.
I love when Puss first faces Death, his eyes are reflected on Deaths sickles, but by the final fight its Deaths eyes...a reflection of facing his fear and growth as a character. Its the small details like this that make this movie so good!

This movie has so many reversal mirrors-the eyes, the "pick it up", how/when he loses his hat/sword, the silhouette usage, the key change in Death's whistle...

One thing I geeked out on Twitter recently is, whenever we hear Death's whistle, it's in A minor starting on the 7th (G B D), but the very last one we hear when he's leaving Puss to live his life, it changes to A major starting on the 1st (A C# E). Major keys are usually for happier, more light-hearted tunes, while minor keys are for darker, brooding, or sad tunes.

EDIT: I've been corrected in that the first key is actually in G major; I assumed A minor given it's no flats or sharps signature. I studied music for 8 years, but dropped out of college prior to learning about "tonal center" and "juxtaposition of melody" or whatever the hell. Still, point stands: it changes at the end of the film, which is neat. Music is neat.
As someone with near perfect pitch, you're...somewhat correct. All his whistles are in a major key. I went back to listen to make sure I was right, and his first whistle is G major...buutttt you're correct that his last whistle is A major. Same tune, different key and tonal center. I say this because you say G B D but that is the outline of a G major chord, there's nothing 'minor' about it and the tonal center is 100% G. So it's more about the juxtaposition of a melody in a major key associated with the thing we all fear to some degree...but keeping it in a major key and raising it when we accept the inevitable. In many ways that more subtle powerful than doing the usual major v minor key.
The death reveal scene is one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen, like it is absolutely perfect. Death comes across as insanely terrifying, from the framing, to the directing to the voice acting. This is puss in boots 2, nobody expects this movie to try, and yet it’s working so hard!
His first scene he just appears. No intro, no buildup. He's just there. And then you can go back and realize that he is in the background for each of his 8 deaths (I think). Death comes on all of us with no warning.
I saw this in theaters with two siblings also in their 20's and when I say that the Death whistle in surround sound made all of us nervous, it's the truth. I went thinking it was gonna be an over done kids movie, but now it's one of my favorites. Thank you for finally doing this video.
Totally agree that Kitty had to be capping, to spare Puss's feelings. She was so angry about the wedding in the beginning, but she was so nonchalant about it after overhearing Puss's conversation with Perrito.
Kitty doesn't strike me as the type to lie to spare a person's feelings. Kitty is a deceiver by nature, but she tends to open up to those who manage to break down her walls. Like when she shared her troubles with Perrito at the river because she sympathized with him or when she talked about getting declawed to Puss in the first film. Declawed cats can become more defensive, since they're stripped of their primary natural defense and I don't think was as broken up about Santa Coloma than she wanted Puss to believe. When he saw trying to steal the map too, Puss kept acting like he could win her over in spite of what happened. Kitty was likely responding in a way that would quash any hopes he had of trying to pull the wool from over her eyes, since from my observations a lot of her defensiveness in "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" was a reaction to Puss trying to take the map from her.

She probably was very hurt, but not cuz he left her at the alter. Rather, she felt bad cuz he never explained what happened. Once she knew why he backed out, she could either be ready to lie to make him feel better or tell the truth since she doesn’t care if they’re married or not. She only cares that she can trust him.
@@ma.2089 I felt like what happened at the beginning was kind of obvious, the two were competing for the same score like in the first film. Kitty and Puss are both thieves by trade, not to mention she was hiding inside the chest that he unlocked, and it's not like they can split the reward. Also, Kitty only brought up Santa Coloma a couple of times, and their banter for the most part of the film was actually pretty playful.

I think she lied about not being there, but less to spare Puss's feelings, and more so that she didn't have to hear him apologize and share that vulnerable moment. I was genuinely surprised by the Spiderverse-type animation and the added bleeps. This movie's story-telling was a lot better than I expected as well. I'm so so happy you chose to watch this! It's one of my favorite animated movies already!

Honestly, my favorite part about the panic attack scene isn't the fact it's just so accurate, but more of the fact that they don't play it off as a joke. They take it seriously, and they never use it as a punchline. And that is amazing.
As an extreme black and white thinker, hearing that it’s okay to just feel whatever feeling is coming, or just knowing that if you feel guilt or sadness or anxiety around a person who you care about once in a while, it’s okay, you don’t need to just leave them because not everything will be good.
Yeah, nothing in life is ever gonna be good all the time. The real question is whether it’s worth it. Take it from me; I married the literal man of my dreams, but mental health and financial struggles have rudely intruded on our little Heaven more than once. Nothing is ever gonna be perfect all the time. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be worth fighting for.
What makes Perrito great to me is that he leaves an impact on others. And I don't mean the "therapy dog"- side of him that brings out the best in people, I mean how Puss and Kitty genuinely care about him. BEFORE he has really done a lot for them.
The "annoying sidekick" is often the one in movies/books that gets threatened or kidnapped by the antagonist. When that happens, two of the main heroes always have this type of conversation:
Character A: "Ohhh nooo, they have [annoying side character]!... Anyway, let's keep going!"
Character B: *Glares at character A*
Character A: *Sighs* "All right, let's go get [annoying side character]
In Puss In Boots, there wasn't a bit of hesitation or doubt when Perrito got kidnapped. Both Kitty and Puss went into protective mode, they were mortified and worried and would have given anything to get him back.
I always wondered why I should care about a comic relief character that not even the heroes like. But Perrito was a part of the family and he was so loved by our main protagonists.
Absolutely. He was played so straight and was delightful as a character while being funny and "annoying". He was one of the best examples of this archetype I have seen
Donkey was the worst, Perrito is most certainly the upgrade

I'm 18 years old. I've been dealing with anxiety since I was 12 years old, maybe earlier. This movie has made me cry so many times just because of how real the representation of a panic attack is. I remember my first panic attack which is what I believe to be the final switch for my developing clinical anxiety disorder. I remember my heart beating. I remember feeling like I couldn't get enough air no matter how deeply or quickly I breathed. I had no idea what was happening to me. It felt like the back of my neck was being drenched in red hot magma. I couldn't stand, I couldn't really even move. I was shaking and having these uncomfortable involuntary full body spasms, to the point where my mom who is a nurse told me it looked almost like a granmal seizure (if that's how it's spelt). One of the scary things about it was that I had no control over my own body and I was panicing for a reason I didn't think I should have been panicing for. The worst part about it was my mind. The first thought I had when it started was "oh my god I'm dying". Many people disregard or underestimate panic attacks as something minor. I can tell you it isn't. I have and always will describe a panic attack as torture because that's what it is. I may not have been bruised, scraped, or cut, but a real panic attack is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. When Puss ran through the forest and collapsed against a tree, wide eyed, panting, his heart beating so hard he couldn't hear anything, because he was feeling a way he refused to believe he should be feeling, I cried. I don't often cry, but I did for this. I truely felt like "oh my god, someone understands". Now for the most part my panic attacks last about an hour where I can't move, and there was one that lasted a full week (I was honestly ready to do something I'd regret just to make it stop) but even just seeing a quick few minutes of panic from this animated cat made me feel like it really wasn't just me. I'm so happy to have a movie like this. Anxiety isn't something minor to be scoffed at. It's a mental illness and it's serious. I hope because of this and people like you speaking on this that more people will recognise what people like me have to go through.
The bit about suppressing emotions which causes panic attacks. My own experience was that when I started saying to myself that yes I'm feeling angry, sad, scared, etc and it's okay the attacks decreased a lot. There had been times where while at work, I'd tell myself that yes I'm feeling these emotions and I'll deal with them after work. When one acknowledges what they're feeling, the feelings become manageable. That's been my experience
As someone with pretty bad anxiety I was an absolute mess during the panic attack scene because I just related so hard. I love this movie so much

I LOVED this movie. Not for just the message, but the ART STYLE. The action shots are so cool and fun, a really nice twist on normal 3D animation.

I love how at first deaths whistle is terrifying and crawling at your spine giving you chills, then after puss fights death the whistle simply sounds beautiful instead. At least for me ❤

I love how Puss was saved by the gatito blade given to him by Kitty, kind of symbolic how his grown relationship with her and Perrito is what saved him in the end

I have severe anxiety, and that scene spoke so strongly to me that I cried when I first watched The Last Wish. I still cry every time I rewatch that scene because it’s so accurate, and it doesn’t portray having a panic attack as something that you need to “just get over it,” or as some weird light and sound show that is far from how a panic attack really feels. When I saw that panic attack scene from Puss I cried, and I haven’t cried that hard for a movie in such a long time. It was so accurate to REAL panic attacks, even down to Perrito comforting him, cause my dog does the same thing when I’m having one. Basically broke down with how represented I felt, shout-out to Dreakworks for genuinely putting in good work for the movie☺️
I cried like a baby with every second of this movie, i’m in a moment of my life where I feel afraid always, I can’t sleep, I can’t do a lot of stuff I used to do before and this movie reflected the sensation perfectly.
“Even if this is all there is, I can be happy with this”- after some hard experiences the last few years, following dreams and having my heart broken- this is something I really needed to hear
So, I'm gonna say a theory about Perrito that I've seen a while ago:
The whole map of his trail to the Star is actually full of unalive and death concepts.
English is not my first language, but from wat I understood the place "Pocket Full o'posies" is about a part of a nursery rhyme, and it's a flower that plague doctors put on deceased patients. "The River of Relaxation" could be about the River of Styx, the afterlife. "The Field of Quick and Easy Solutions", another unalive concept to end the suffering "the easy way".
I don't think Perrito is clueless about his surroundings, and just like you said I think that's his way of coping to not have unalive thoughts. People always say that people who smile more are the ones who need more help.
I agree. He seems naive but the there are the moments such as the panic attack where he realizes when something is bad. He recognizes puss’s distress, he recognizes how leaving Kitty at the alter was a bad thing, he is scared of Jack Horner. He recognizes bad things but chooses to cope with them by looking at the good things no matter how small or ridiculous they seem. He also jokes about how badly he was treated which I’ve seen in a lot of people with low self esteem. His jokes such as the “funny story” and his insult game with the bears are examples of him poking fun at himself.

This movie was such a pleasant surprise. I loved the first Puss in Boots, but this one blew it out the water. It hit so many deep elements. The anxiety scenes were so well done. I cried multiple times watching this. It just hit to close to home ❤
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I love Perrito, he's the most deserving of a wish yet he's so happy with his life he's willing to risk his for someone else's wish. The forest scene is also a perfect example to kids of how a therapy dog/esa/psychiatric service dog helps someone. My childhood cat was my esa, he helped me during panic attacks because I could match his breathing and that helped me learn correct breathing exercises.
As someone who’s dealt with panic attacks my whole life; puss & boots was a real tear jerker for me! I’m happy you guys covered it, even seeing it in snippets here made me tear up. I always appreciate movies showing something accurately like anxiety, fear, etc. I will have to rewatch it now!

This movie was a diamond in the rough of children's movies last year. I was absolutely stunned that they managed to cover topics like anxiety, adopted families, and death as well as they did. I'm so glad that y'all watched it as well!

„The more you force it, the worse it gets sometimes” really speaks to me right now. I’ve been dealing with chronic illness and it’s starting to affect me psychologically too. I tried so hard these days to suppress the depression signs (had overcome one a few years earlier) but when I couldn’t anymore and just let all my sadness out in front of my husband he said something really similar: “Sometimes the sadness isn’t so much the problem but the fact that we don’t allow ourselves to feel it”. I immediately felt better afterwards. Lovely and really helpful episode, thank you so much! ❤
The panic attack scene makes me cry every time. It's so real and so good.
I'm not a therapist(Far from it), but Jono saying "It's the fear of Pain that's scary" has given me a thought on Suicidal people. The people who think they want death don't actually want to die, they only want relief from the things in life that hurt. They maybe associate life with Pain and in turn think Death is an end to said pain.
It's a really sad yet interesting avenue to look into, I'd love to hear the opinions of others on this.
I don't remember where I heard it and I can't quote a research, but the premise has stuck with me. Basically, people who are in chronic pain are the ones who are most inclined to be suicidal. They just want the pain to stop.
It doesn't have to be only a physical pain, it could also be emotional torment.

This is hands down the most perfect film I've watched in nearly a decade. I have also not been so afraid of a fictional character, like feeling strong anxiety (an unusual emotion for me), since Gmork in Neverending Story when I was 5. Holy shit. The use of music to herald death made it so visceral and cut to the core. When Puss got chills, *I* got chills. Ugh. So well done. This was absolutely a movie made for everyone who was in the 10-20yr range when Shrek came out. The audience aged and they made a movie for that audience.
In the original fairy tale, Puss was not a good "person" as he lied and cheated and tricked people to ensure his master could marry the princess. This sort of behavior was not glossed over in this film either, shown in the flashbacks to his previous lives lost, so honestly this might be the most faithful modern day characterization of Puss (something most adults can relate to at one time or another, who hasn't at the very least told a lie?).
the panic attack scene is so well done. my favorite part about it is that we know that Puss is a fearless fighter, and for Perrito to see him like this, but his instinct is not to comment on it, or point it out, but to just be there for Puss in his moment of weakness. And Puss isn't ashamed to receive Perrito's help and comfort.

Chihuahuas were actually considered to have healing powers by the Aztecs and would basically act as hot water bottles. My chi-mix definitely helps bring my anxiety down.
Imo, the most important part of making a good major side character that also serves as a comic relief is to not only have their jokes be funny, but to also give them personality and a good role in the story outside of just being funny. And the writing for Perrito is an excellent example of that. I thought I was gonna dislike him, but he ended up becoming one of my favorite Shrek characters.

When I started to more deliberately contemplate death, one of the outcomes was that I started to watch more synopses of video games and movies that caught my interest because I realized I would not realistically have the time in my finite life to get around to watch/play all or perhaps even most of them. I suppose my interest in this channel is part of that...
I have always felt that the old saying: "The one who hides in bed dies anyway" sums up the need in all of us to not fear death (or failure, or pain) to go out there and live our best life.
