Therapist Reacts to RATATOUILLE
PDS Debt is offering a free debt analysis. It only takes thirty seconds. Get yours at PDSDebt.com/cinema.
How do you honor what your loved ones are passionate about?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are watching Ratatouille and reacting to the theme of telling the story of being an artist. For Remy, it’s through food and cooking, and they talk about how everyone has their own medium of art. Alan talks about the art of filmmaking, both from his perspective and genius director Brad Bird. Jonathan explains how finding your passion is foundational to loving and accepting yourself. And they come up with some wild theories about Remy’s psychosis.

You are ABSOLUTELY not alone Alan! This is probably my absolute favorite Pixar movie too! For me it’s always been between this one and The Incredibles (2004).

My name is Remi and I had a very complicated relationship with this movie growing up because kids would call me remi the rat after this movie came out, but it really is one of my favorites! I love cooking and it’s a fun concept, and I literally tear up every time I hear Ego’s monologue at the end. Definitely an underrated pixar film for sure!

Just like Alan, I say a lot of Pixar films are my favorite when I watch them, but Ratatouille is truly up there in the top 3 (tied with Up and Wall-E; they shuffle themselves in order depending on the situation.) This movie is truly a celebration of cooking and food, persistence and hard work paying off - it also has such a lovely, fun score that always gets stuck in my head when I watch it. Other people have explained the genius of this movie already, but I'm just so glad that you covered it and now more people get to appreciate this movie through your video!

I never watched this movie w this perspective. As my favorite I just loved the cooking scenes. Remy was my favorite character simply for that, ignoring his design and story. When I thought about themes and the meaning of liking Remy. Involves his story for sure. But because he worked hard and loved family. I never had a moment to think how Remy is an artist from ANYwhere. First impressions are just that.

"the only respect that matters is self-respect" that hit different + "when Remi chasing the approval of society, the press then Chase the approval of anton ego. What he decided to do, is to just be true to himself. Not being true to Anton, or anything else. He decided who he is and what he wants to be. And he creates his own art, as accepting himself and trying to amuse himself, and that's what resonates with ego" aswell as "growing up You are chasing teachers and parents approval and part of being and adult is being your own parent and own yourself approval"

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about how Mulan had the opportunity to go back with no consequences, and while she felt her weakest. Instead, she wanted to overcome her weaknesses, and be a part of something, and probably most of all, just prove she could do it. It's epic.

There is a deep and clever double meaning to the cage conversation. “I am only as free as you imagine me to be. As you are” The surface interpretation is that Ghost-eau is as free as Remmy can be. He is as free as Remmy can imagine him, and Remmy can’t imagine him to be more free than he is. The deeper reading is that Ghost-eau is only as free as Remmy imagines him to be, and So Is Remmy. Remmy’s freedom is also defined by his belief in how free he is. Absolutely brilliant writing

I think the reason that Sadness was the only one who could alter a memory is that she was the emotion that was being repressed, this big change that upset Riley happened and her head is going crazy trying to navigate through it by throwing around all of these random emotions, but nothing works, and by the end when Sadness takes control of the panel Riley finally breaks down and expresses how she truly feels, because once we allow ourselves to cry we’re able to truly open up, and thus it creates the first bittersweet memory that now powers her Family Island, and in essence makes it stronger than it ever was

I watched this movie a week or so ago, mostly out of curiosity, because I had not seen it before, and WOW it was so good!! My family is religious, and they have acted like Frollo to some degree. I've given up my faith because of that. I cannot call myself a part of their religion without feeling like i'm just as bad. Esmerelda's song "God Help the Outcasts" was the most i think i have ever cried at a movie. Thank you for making this video.

So, Jono saying "parents are the stewards" reminds me of the speech that Drack gave in the Mass Effect Andromeda game. He talks about how dark his life got, then was given his granddaughter to take care of and then near the end says "parents aren't meant to be a goal or a finish line. We're the starting line. Where you go from there? That's all you." basically I'm saying I learned something from a videogame that seems like good advice.
