How does an actor get into the psychology of their character?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are joined by special guest, Giancarlo Esposito, to talk acting and psychology in this Psychology of an Actor series. Giancarlo shares his approach to acting and what he does in each role to learn something about himself. Together they look at some of his iconic characters: Buggin Out in Do the Right Thing, Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad, Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, and Stan Edgar in The Boys. And they talk about Giancarlo’s latest role in Parish, which debuts on March 31st on AMC!

In the AG1 spot…are you really tall or is that a really short fridge?

EXACTLY my reaction

They got Giancarlo Esposito.
I was swear man I thought I was trippin lol
These are the types of interviews you actually want to hear actors have.
That's exactly why we created this series!
And probably why they agree to it, maybe? 😍🥰 So incredibly awesome!
@@CinemaTherapyShowI can't wait to see who else you're interviewing next. I hope Doug Jones, David Tennant, and Penny Johnson Jerald are in the mix.
@@CinemaTherapyShowMaybe you could get some voice actors for this series?
@@spidey5558Mark Hamill perhaps?
"To me, acting is like playing. It's being a kid again."
That's so based.
Based? What does that mean? Is it like "basic"?
@@madisondeitch8053Based usually means awesome
Acting is just playing Pretend/Larping with a massive budget. :D
Every feedback from my theater friends: "Here is where I get to play like a child again"
@@madisondeitch8053based is being yourself and not caring what others think of you. TYBG🙏
Holy crap. Giancarlo Esposito. Now THAT’S a get.
IM SHCOKED I WILL DEF BE WATCHING
They better thank him and shake his hand….
@@osmanyousif7849I don't know if you noticed, but the odds of that are limited in a distant interview lol
*Esposito
I just get jumpscared any time he appears anywhere, like in CollegeHumor
I've been watching you guys since when there was only five videos in the channel, seeing Giancarlo collab made me realise how far Cinema Therapy has gotten. I'm super proud of you guys and this community, thank you Alan and Jono for bringing us these amazing videos!
Wow, thank you!!
Holy fuck... When he says "Bring me the child"
Actual goosebumps
Oh same! I was freaking out for the first minute of the video as he talked and clips of his different characters played while the Mof Gideon theme played in the background. Then that happened and I was not OK.
Giancarlo is one of the greats in the hall of fame of “actors who are insanely nice and chill dudes IRL and only get villain roles for how well they absolutely have fun with the role”
Agreed! Right next to Mads Mikkelsen.
Giancarlo Esposito is easily my favorite among all the celebrity guest stars you've had. Hearing him speak joyfully about acting and seeing his laid-back personality compared to the cold, analytical figures he plays shows his talent.
I know! His personality is such a delightful surprise!
He really does know how to turn one-eighty. I love that about him. Looks like he could kill you, is a cinnamon roll kind of guy.
It is never anything short of a delight to hear Esposito talk about his roles and his career, because he is so consistently energetic, and enthusiastic, and excited to share his thoughts about what he does. He really can't hide how much he loves what he's done, so it's a pleasure to hear him talk about it.
i swear the nicest actors play the most awful people in shows/movies😭💀
Giancarlo is one of my favorite actors; He's so versatile and consistent, too. His role as 'Gus Fring' still shakes me to this very day.
He is great .. plus he was also good in The Usual Suspects as The FBI Agent.. and he probably one of the most stylish people in the business.. I don’t understand why no one talks about his style.. if Jonah Hill can be called a style icon why can this gentleman not be in that category or something like that…!
Yes, I love that you were able to get Giancarlo Esposito on your show. I appreciate that many of his characters never really lose their temper or raise their voices, but are almost eerily calm. A testament to his amazing acting talent.
The scariest and most dangerous evil isn't the evil that just anybody and everybody could look and readily identify as "that is bad and we should clearly avoid", it's that far more insidious evil that people could look at and not immediately pick out or identify for sure as being definitely bad. That's the evil that can unfortunately often take the most root and pass by completely undetected.
And I too really admire writers/actors/etcetera who can recognize and acknowledge and depict that so so very well, also!!!
He looks like he had a good time! I HOPE YOU HAVE MORE INTERVIEWS LIKE THIS, THIS IS CRAZYY!!!
So glad you enjoyed the episode! We did some with David Dastmalchian and have a few more in the works. czcams.com/play/PLRO9q005b62XgaAiWMYkLcBddC7QZXlhA.html
Congratulations! Your hard work is paying off. @@CinemaTherapyShow
"You are not a God, you are simply a bad product" ... I love The Boys, I watch the show, and that line was EVERYTHING, and Giancarlo Esposito can destroy me with words at any given time, the guy has delivered some of the best lines in cinema and TV!!!! Much love and respect for his life, for being so open about it in this video, and also for his work that has become legendary!!!! 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Everyone was (rightfully) praising the writers throughout this episode, but Giancarlo's monologues here showed how much of his own gravitas that he brings to his roles. It felt like we were watching Giancarlo play "Giancarlo as written by...". Just such a great voice and talent.
Ugh you guys do great interviews, I want to see this show blow up like Hot Ones just so you get more great artists and people important in the therapy world on. Another excellent excellent episode
Thank you so much! We hope so too.
I love Giancarlo! ❤ Even before Breaking Bad I remember watching him in The Usual Suspects. Great actor.
I forgot he was in Usual Suspects. Yes agree great actor.
Giancarlo is the best!
I love his voice. Seeing him act so seriously and then in interviews he’s so animated and happy is wonderful.
Don’t forget to Do the Right Thing.
That scene from Breaking Bad when Gus said something around the lines of "the goal for a man is to provide for their family" hits so much harder now
Listening to Giancarlo Esposito talk about his past, and how he counted himself out really came at an important time for me. I’m at a turning point in my life where I have to start taking the drivers seat, and it’s encouraging to hear such an accomplished, intelligent, well spoken man talk about overcoming that idea of being a failure, and being unable to provide for your family. Thanks guys, awesome work as always!
Good luck to you! I wish you all the success in the world, Batsy!
DUUUDE GIANCARLO ESPOSITO!!!! Beyond proud of you guys
DAYUUUUUM, NOW THIS IS A BIG LEAP MY FRIENDS!!!
That's crazy. I just saw him on a talk show this morning! What a coincidence
I got to interview Giancarlo Esposito once for a movie, years ago. And he is such a delight. What a great conversationalist. And man, the cold efficiency of Stan Edgar playing off the smirk slowly draining off Homelander's face as it sinks in that Stan absolutely means what he says is always such an incredible scene to watch.
I was watching Giancarlo guest on the Dropout show Game Changer just the other day, and his remarks here about acting being like playing and being a child, and wanting to be a collaborator, are so evident there. He was having the best time playing with the other contestants, and I was having the best time watching him.
Which episode?
@@CamInAHat Ham It Up S3 E5
Time to go over to Dropout. Game Changer is great.
This is one of the best ideas for an episode you've ever had, without question
Thanks! Have you seen our other Psychology of an Actor episodes? We have more in the works. :) czcams.com/play/PLRO9q005b62XgaAiWMYkLcBddC7QZXlhA.html
Wooow! That's serious! Congratulations!
Whaaaat?! Congratulations on getting this interview. Also, he's just as amazing to watch in conversation as he is in a role.
So true! We could have talked with him all day.
wow. movin' up in the world I see. good job guys. glad to see you doing well for yourselves
His portrayal of Gus in Breaking Bad is one of the best portrayals of a villain in fiction.
WE LOVE GIANCARLO ESPOSITO. HE'S AMAZING. Such a gentleman.
Um I'm ECSTATIC for this episode. I'm so impressed and happy for y'all that you got Giancarlo?!? And I can't wait to watch!!
What a great time! He's such a versatile actor and he is so good at what he does! I wish there were more interviews like this bc this is giving the people what they want 😌
Oh, this is going to be an episode to see. That gentleman has done some incredible performances, but I've not seen an interview with him. I have a feeling this is going to be a treat!
Wonderful interview! He's such an amazing actor. I'm glad y'all were able to pull this one together. ❤❤
We're glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
I had no idea who Giancarlo Esposito was. This was a fantastic interview that makes me want to watch everything that he has done.
The first time I saw Giancarlo Esposito was in an episode of Touched By an Angel, he played an artist who was dealing with severe imposter syndrome and was talked out of destroying his most popular painting. He stood out so much that I can remember it to this day.
The role I first really noticed/remembered him for myself was in 'Revolution'. I had almost definitely seen him in other things before that, but that was the one that transformed him[ for me] into someone that I instantly recognize and whose work I deliberately keep my eyes on the lookout for rather than just another face/body acting things out on screen. 🙂 Lol
OMG This is beyond our widest dreams! The man, the myth, the legend, THE GIANCARLO ESPOSITO!
Damn, protect that guy. Humble, genuine, authentic.
the way I squealed when giancarlo said “give me the child”. omgggggg. this is such a huge episode, I was screaming in excitement for yall when I saw this was coming in the community tab
Wow, I just watched "Better call Saul" and re-watched "Breaking Bad" - and you invite Giancarlo Esposito! His acting as Gustavo Fring amazes me each time. Such a complex, wholesome character - open and socially fitting, but cold-minded, perfectly strategic and deeply intimidating. And those precise touches showing his extremely pedantic and controlling nature add so much to the portrait!
Whoa whoa this gonna be big. Such a slept on legend.
I clicked this video without processing the title, thinking it would be an analysis of Gus Fring, and then freaking Giancarlo Esposito showed up! Fantastic interview. Random funny story, I was Facetiming with my sister and her Russian fiance a couple of months back, and we were talking about Oppenheimer. My future brother-in-law was confused when we said that Robert Downey Jr. was in the movie--he said, "I thought he was played by the actor in Breaking Bad." He totally thought that RDJ was Giancarlo Esposito! I can definitely see a resemblance in the style and mannerisms of the two characters.
Seriously one of the best actors working right now. I seriously can't tell you how many times a character he's played has given me chills. Like The Boys, "You are not a god, you're just bad product." That delivery made my hair stand up the first time I seen that. Legit goosebumps. Just the way he never once blinked or looked away from him as he's staring down what might as well be a god considering nobody else is even close to being as powerful as him. Chilling.
Giancarlo Esposito is one of my favorite actors. In 1995 in my film comparative theory class in college "do the right thing" was part of the curriculum. When i hear he is in something I know his performance is going to be deep.
I really enjoyed Giancarlo in the Netflix limited series, 'Kaleidoscope'. A mysterious show, that kept me on the edge of my seat too. Giancarlo is one of my favorite actors, without question!
I met him once at a con and the man has been one of my favorite actors for a long time, he was so kind and patient and just a pure gem. So I love that you guys got him on the show. Seriously up and up with these guests I love it.
These Psychology of an Actor Episodes are sooo good, and Giancarlo Esposito is a fantastic actor. For years I had been wishing yall would do episodes on the characters from Better Call Saul so the little glimpse of talking about Gus Fringe was awessome
Well damn you got Giancarlo on the show.. this is insane. ❤
When he told Dallas "I need my Payday 2"... Literal chills
Gus Fring is one of the most chilling characters I've ever seen, I am so thrilled to see this episode!
This is AMAZING guys! I mean holy cow. This guy is one of the greats, and you've had him on! It's crazy to see you grow like you have in the past couple years.
I’m genuinely so pleased for you guys. Seems like just yesterday I was recommending this lil 100k sub channel to my mum, and now I’m looking at Giancarlo fkn Esposito! Talk about growth 😂
Thanks for sticking around! 😊
Wow! Can't believe you got Giancarlo to be on the show! Will watch more later but been loving this man's body of work and it's great getting his point of view on acting!
Glad to have Giancarlo aboard my favorite therapy friendship. To play an order bringer in what many of us would consider chaotic worlds (even IF he is meant to be playing "the bad guy" most of the time) on the strength of all involved producing the show in addition to his own acting is worthy of praise wherever Giancarlo is.
I got to meet Giancarlo a couple years ago at a Comic Con. He is as classy of a man as his dress attire. Not only did he make everyone feel underdressed with how classy and sharp he dressed. but he was a very down-to-earth gentleman. Thank you again for the experience, Mr Esposito.
OMG OMG I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!
Amazing! Giancarlo in Cinema Therapy??
Man I love that dinner scene between Gus and Walt. It harkens back to what he said to Gretchen when she suggests the soul is what completes a human, "There is only chemistry here." All Walt is are the compounds that make up his body, the thing deep inside that makes him human whether it be a literal soul or whatever gives us the feeling of one doesn't exist, he's Patrick Bateman in a Mr. Rogers skin. In that scene you see a man who believes in magic (in a sense that he sees something magical in food and warm memories) getting it ripped away by a man who only sees matter and equations and nothing deeper in the world. For all their similarities and intelligence that's the one thing that distinguishes them entirely.
This is amazing. I'm so glad you guys got him for an interview. He seems so generous. He also donated a little of his time for viceo clips on the Breaking Bad RV Tour. He introduced a couple of important locations in Albuq.
Hearing Giancarlo’s enthusiasm and the amount of consideration he gives to every role is really inspiring. His character portrayals are so powerful you can really see how much he loves acting and character craft. Thank you for having him on, great discussions
Omg this is officially my new favourite channel! Giancarlo Esposito is a legend!
Im in awe that yall got Giancarlo!! Hes one of my all time favorite actors! And not to mention one of my favorite Far Cry villain lol
Love this episode. Seeing Giancarlo on here is a genuine surprise, and a treat.
What would you guys say if you’d been told when you started this journey together that you’d be getting the opportunity to talk to some of the amazing talents in the stories we all love? I love that the channel has evolved in this way. Thank you guys for doing everything you do and providing us with great work time after time.
I can't understand just how pleasantly surprised I am to see this in my subscription feed
This was a phenomenal interview & video - I would LOVE to have more of these in the future!
Thanks, we're trying to grow the Psychology of an Actor series!
Y'all are starting to get BIG. The guests you're pulling . . . respect!
No way you got this guy! Deserves way more views
What a fucking gem he is! How cool that you got him on here!! Cinema Therapy becoming the actual hot shit, I'm so excited! ✨
THIS IS HUGE!!!!!!!!
I can't believe you got Giancarlo Esposito?!!! Holy S**t!! 😲😲😲❤❤❤
I just finished binge watching Netflix's The Gentlemen last night and I'm super glad Guy Ritchie was able to cast Giancarlo in the role he was in. Fit right into it like a glove!
Giancarlo Esposito is one of my favorite actors. Always happy to see him on screen.
the scen in Bracking bad where the cartiel trees to kill him and his reaction represent so true a real emotion I was going through living in Syria during the war and pandemic in 2020
I know guys like Sinefeld joked that actors are nothing because they have writers and costume designers and stunt coordinators, but guys like THIS DUDE show how much work and passion you gotta put into your roles!
My first Giancarlo show was Revolution - great chartacter and love his acting!
Giancarlo is such a gift to the acting world, for all the phenomenal work he has done. Both for movies, series, and recently a video game.
That being said, we should let him play some wholesome and kind roles again, as I remember reading about him saying he would love to do so, though he has become synonymous with charismatic villain characters in recent years due to his role as Gustavo Fring.
Give that man a wholesome role, darnit! :D
An absolutely incredible guest, have loved Giancarlo’s work for ages! Well done 🎉🎉
I got chills watcbing that Mando scene again with Mof Gideon himself right there. It hits different.
Oh my goodness!!! That's amazing! He's such a talented actor!
BRO THIS IS SO COOL. I had to stop freaking out for a week before I saw it.
You guys are in the big leagues now!
Wow this was quite a surprise. I first saw Giancarlo in Breaking Bad and Gus became one of my favorite characters in that universe especially with that box cutter episode. I also found it funny that he was Big Bird's camp counselor in Sesame Street only to later play a ruthless drug king pin who owns a fast food chicken restaurant.
No way you got GIANCARLO ESPOSITO!!?!! Love you Buggin’ Out forever and always 🧡
Holy sh*t, you have Giancarlo Esposito as a guest!? I guess I thought you'd be breaking down his roles but it didn't click that you'd have him on the show! New favorite episode loading!!
The guest I least expected but I'm the most exited about, to watch and for you guys as a channel.
This is huuuuge, congratulations!!!
Thank you!!
Buggin Out hells yes I LOVE Giancarlo Esposito!!! I think I've watched Last Holiday 100 times just for his creepy senator character! ❤❤❤❤
This is mind-blowing. I've followed his career since I was a teen when he was Buggin. I am beyond jealous that you got to actually talk with him for as long as you did - and so thankful that you filmed it for all of us to enjoy vicariously!
This is an awesome birthday present! THANK YOU
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!!
great episode. you guys asked great questions, and did such a great job in letting your guest talk without interrupting. A ton of interviewers on tv and yt could learn alot from you guys. Also love to hear Giancarlo Esposito, someone who is very intelligent and composed (seemingly atleast) recognize some issues he struggles with very early on in the episode...and even better he was able to laugh and joke about it, while still being truthful about his need to work on being a "runner" with therapy. Bravo!!!
Exactly. This channel is one of the reasons I will never have a TV licence again. They are top tier.
Wow, thanks so much!
Such a great actor. I first saw him as the mirror in Once Upon A Time
Me too! Sidney Glass stole every scene he was in.
Long time fan of this channel, i am so excited for you guys, the work you do, and i am so excited you got to talk with Giancarlo Esposito!!
Thanks so much!
That was a 🔥 interview. This is why I love this show
i never got into the Mandalorian show cuz it was a little too slow for me but this guy, boy is he an amazing actor
This is amazing. I can't wait for more of these episodes, I really hope that all this amazing work means that by the time an adaptation comes around, I'll see the announcement that Alan is involved with Mistborn. Because I love the ideas he's talked about and I know it's his dream project.
Oh shit, I saw him at Fanexpo Vancouver! His roles are so powerful, happy to see him again!
You guys are killing it with these guest appearances!
Love you guys. Love what you do. Love that you got the GIANCARLO ESPOSITO on here!
But if I'm completely honestly, this felt more like a typical interview that I could see on several different youtube channels, and not really something very therapy-centric that comes from my online cinema therapy dads, Alan and John-o. I get that you guys probably wanted to take a back seat, and allow Giancarlo's naturally large personality to come out on top, and that makes sense. But at the same time, I can't say this particular video fits in perfectly with all the rest of what you've put out before. Like, I get the "cinema" part of this...but not much therapy, here. This could have been a sort of "psychology of a villain," or getting deeper into the various mental processes of each of Giancarlo's characters put on display here. But in the end, it just turned out to be the typical actor stories of who Giancarlo was at that particular moment in time, what he was going through, and "his process." All great info, don't get me wrong...but again, you can see many other interviewers getting that kind of information out of actors like Giancarlo. In the future, maybe you guys can work on keeping your individuality and spark present WHILE you are connecting with big name stars! That's what I would absolutely LOVE to see next time!
But that's just my limited perspective. I have no experience, nor any behind-the-scenes understand of how any of this works. Again, I love you guys! Keep doing what you're doing! It's so meaningful and impactful to me and everyone else who you reach on a daily basis!
I totally agree with you, I thought they were going to go into Gus Fring's psyche and discuss his behaviour patterns and trauma. The title is really misleading.
What a great interview, guys. Conversations like this are so much better than the usual press-style segments we see elsewhere. Congrats on the successes.
This is wild! You guys are doing so well recently with these guests well done guys❤️💪🏼
Can't believe I missed this one; I love Esposito's work!! Although I'm a teeny bit sad that you guys didn't have time to discuss the role I first knew him in, Sidney Glass (the Magic Mirror) from _Once Upon a Time._ That character was actually pretty interesting!
I personally haven't seen Giancarlo in many roles but watching this, I think that it's so cool how he can play so many similar roles (confident bad guy who wields unprecidented the power over the heroes) and yet to hear him talk about the way he approaches each character is so different. Acting, man!
I was looking very much forward to this episode and was not disappointed. :)
This was outstanding!
Keep 'em comin'!
