Many people, myself included, made the experience that you have more sensible games at higher ranks. It’s just a matter of the game meta. Let me explain. If you know the game and your opponent knows the game you will know which spots, angles and tactics are meta and you will follow that in your game. Than it’s down to pure skill who is more capable of winning rounds. But if you however play against filthy silvers that don’t follow these meta rules you will start to see unpredictable behaviour that follows no rational of the existing meta and you will get increasingly more frustrated by the enemy. An opponent like this can be much harder to beat even though they objectively suck.

    Not sure how I feel the use of choke points in wingman maps, I think it makes the gameplay too linear. I think that’s what I like about lake is that there are not a lot of chokepoints and that allows for really dynamic gameplay. Lake has entry points, like the stairs and rock, but nothing with good line of sight that doesn’t leave you extremely exposed to other angles. I think that’s what makes good utility usage and unpredictable evasive movement so powerful on that map. On the maps Nuke, overpass, cobble, shortdust, and vertigo there are just 2 or 3 entrances that can be held from 2 or 3 positions. I just don’t think that leaves room for strategies that arnt just generic peaking and aim duels. I disagree with Warowl that wingman is just a clutch simulator, and discounting it as such robs the game mode of its potential in developing unique 2v2 strategies.

    The first thing I thought when I saw the sawmill was "TF2"

  • @SpinningSandwich
    @SpinningSandwich Před 3 lety +1

    Out of the original batch of Wingman maps, the "normal" maps became ways to practice bombsite takes/holds, while the "true" Wingman map pool centers on Dust1, Rialto, and the truest Wingman map, Lake.
    All three have similar features that the traditional bombsite maps lack. One is, as WarOwl mentions, that the Ts & CTs reach the plant position at roughly the same time. Another is that it's less of a traditional bombsite and more of a central position on the map, quite literally in all three cases. Lake is the most literal with a three dimensional take on placing the plant position in the center of the map, and it's no coincidence that it's the best Wingman map with by far the deepest meta at global ranks.
    One of the things I love about Wingman as a mode is that it recaptures the magic of those old 1.6 fy_ maps. They were small and full of tension in the 1v1, 1v2 late game scenarios that often played out. What Wingman does to improve this formula is refocus that tension on a central plant position. This incentivizes engagement, while still allowing for lots of lurking tension. Rialto captures the spirit of my old favorite fy_dinoiceworld, but Lake is the best at building tension. Let's talk about why.
    There are lots of places to hide on Lake. Aside from being the ultimate GeT_RiGhT fantasy, the cat & mouse meta (whose roles of course switch in the post-plant) makes every moment, from the early game, thru the mid game, to the late game, full of "What's around the corner?" tension. If you're the mouse, you can either risk stealing the cheese at the plant position, or you can try to out circle the cats guarding the cheese. All good Wingman design lends itself to this circular outflanking and sneaking about. WarOwl mentions this as a bad thing, but I think he's underestimating the time incentive to get the plant down. It's important that there are LOTS of places to hide, not just a couple. On Lake, that balances out the sneaking about with the incentive to plant. When you're up against another pair of globals, most rounds make it to a plant attempt if they make it past the opening engagement.
    There are lots of ways to play Lake, with strong roles for any kind of buy. Like Inferno (which I think has the best balance for traditional Counter-Strike) there are ways to play a long range game, a fast & aggressive game, or a slow & sneaky game. The map allows either side to approach with the speed & range it needs to use for the round, while also narrowing down the options for those plays, which clever game sense can then predict. Rialto does NOT do this very well, as all the lanes of approach are essentially the same, aside from the rooftop. Dust1 is somewhere in between, with approaches that at least differ in engagement distance. Being able to dictate the type of engagement you want to take, and having enough options to counter the other team's approach, remains important in Wingman too.
    The takeaways for fundamental Wingman map design are not too different from the Four Square default for competition maps. Inferno & Overpass do a great job of implementing the fundamentals without being an exact 4 square layout. They each have a long, medium, and short range approach. They have one path for each bombsite that only goes to that bombsite and two ways to rotate between bombsites. For Wingman, the first part is identical. You need effective approaches for long, medium, and short range engagements on the plant position. But instead of rotations between bombsites, you need good ways to sneakily rotate *around* the plant position. You're not rotating to a different bombsite. You're rotating to a different approach to the same plant position.

      @SpinningSandwich Před 3 lety

      Lake is by far the best Wingman map. It's the only one where I absolutely need a solid wingman to win against a good duo, and like Dust2, it never gets old. I'm still seeing the meta evolve over time and rarely encounter the same engagements. (Versus Rialto, where there are only so many things that happen, and I have seen most of them already.)

    I just want to say the opening cross hair gag was hilarious and the fact that when he looks at the sun he actually volume corrected the ear rape man the video quality is so good in ways I never expected people to actually care about!

      There is still some clipping also known as gain or distortion which does add perceived volume but it was still unity instead of actually being ear rape deafening loud.

    Absolutely agree about developers and their communities. I don't know of other esports that care the way Valve does, but there are certainly other game devs that do. Paradox Interactive (Cities: Skylines, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, etc) love and support their modding communities. Satisfactory has a thriving mod collection and strong third-party tools, and it's not even out of early access yet. MUDs have historically tended to be open to people creating their own game clients to connect to their servers. It's a philosophy that pervades all aspects of the game design: network protocol design, anti-cheat, save file format, etc, etc, are all built with an understanding that things can change. It creates a resilience that is so friendly to work with.
