I like how the finger that spreads the toothpaste on the toilet goes right back on the toothpaste😂 Also you used too much pressure on the pull through. Other wise it would have worked flawlessly. They used to use those to put the final edges on original wootz Damascus thats been quenched in original Corinthian leather. So it's definitely user error it didn't work.
Sadly this video caused me to be forced to throw out the toothpaste so I really need to hustle it out to make my $3.40 in adsense to cover it.
Also, I heard that using pull through sharpeners on H1 steel will work harden it and acktually make it into a super steel like Maxamalt or Mangathrust

After watching my father in law struggling with a completely dull carving knife one Thanksgiving, I said just give me the knife and 5-10 minutes please, can everyone wait 10 minutes for sliced turkey rather than bludgeoned? I came back downstairs with a sharp carving knife and everyone was happy until later that night I told them I used the toilet tank lid.
I will never look at my toilet the same again.

The absolute only positive use I’ve found for a pull through is stock removal for sharpening things like scrapers or trowels which I then follow up with a few passes on a hand held diamond sharpener.
I could see myself having guests over for dinner and instead of looking cool with a honing rod, having a quick strop on the toilet before cutting up the Sunday roast.

When traveling, I used to sharpen my knife on the bottom of a coffee cup. Worked surprisingly well. I’ve started carrying a small Soyderco hone, since, but still would prefer the mug over a pullthrough

The toilet has better ceramics than any pull through sharpener ever will.
I use the bottom of a coffee cup to keep my box cutter sharp at work. The edge of a car window will work too!

Tried the rubber trick on my WS Field, worked well even on the diamond stones. Cut it down slightly so the eraser could fit inside.

Those types of knife sharpeners are usually best to ruin the knife and edges.
Ive got a 1/4 inch thick slab of 1095 steel that I hit with a big stick to make little sticks out of other big sticks..
It came in a reasonable sheath with a little pocket on the front..
Guess what lives in that pocket along with a ferro rod.. 3 or 4 pull thru and its good to go..
I haven't tested it on paper but.. I don't use it to cut paper.. ive got scissors for that..
Its only purpose in life is to make little sticks out of big sticks .. (and there are some pretty tough sticks in Australia)

Ive actually got 2 pull thru sharpeners. One of them is a Work sharp..
The Work sharp doesn't go camping... it lives in the bottom drawer with the rest of the stuff I just cant bring myself to throw away..

Pro tip rub diamond compound into your pants so you always have a strop.
I was so concerned that you would accidentally lick the toothpaste off your finger after applying it to the 'strop'.
I've cut myself more on a pull through sharpeners than using traditional whetstones
i wasn't expecting you to push the edge, the homemade pottery ceramic i use chips easily, i have better luck dragging the edge backwards, and it does the job better then my cheap diamond plates, before i used the ceramic, it was totally dull, now it actually has an edge, although i'm not good at sharpening
I usually drag the pull thru across the upside down blade rather than the blade against the pull thru. It works a charm
The toilet is also where I put my pull thru sharpener!

Sure, but all in all, a whole toilet is more expensive than most sharpeners.
And most important: how often are your sharpeners occupied by another person of your household... ;-)
I find that nobody else wants to use my sharpening utensils, but the toilet gets frequent use by anyone in the house.
Even visitors! Never had that hapen with a whetstone...
