  • If you are thinking of a PhD, you should think about doing this alternatives instead. Why? A PhD is a major investment in your life and has significant opportunity costs. You really need to be passionate if you are going to succeed at the PhD.
    I realize that my recommendations here might be self-serving because they restrict the supply of PhDs, and increase the value of the services that I provide. However, you really ought to try all other avenues first before you think about a PhD.
    Look for alternatives and substitutes for the career path you want to choose. I would try doing the following:
    Take a holiday or a break from work, and think about whether you are concerned or unhappy with your life. Look for positive changes with what you are already doing first.
    Look for industry research positions. There are many industry research positions that do not require a PhD, and you should explore these alternatives first.
    If you are pursuing a PhD for the status, I would build a reputation in other ways. Look for ways that you can gain status in your religious organization or community.
    Be an apprentice. Start working with someone as a research assistant, and see if you like it. Work a few hours a night at reading the latest literature in the area.
    You have to discover what the career is about before you choose it, and if you still like the path, then you are likely to be passionate about the career.

    David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
    r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
    A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
    The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

    Thank you sir, I think the last point was very important, either you do a PhD or not, it is crucial to be specified in a certain field.

    How in the world did you get a research job with an undergrad?! Even with a Masters nothing exists so far that I have seen in opportunity... there's also tremendous gatekeeping. It is who you know most likely. I am considering a PhD because so far my degrees haven't supported better opportunities ...

    why would you do a PhD if you can do your own research and invent something?

    • @michaelwright8896
      @michaelwright8896 Před rokem

      The purpose of academia is not to invent something. Academia exists to help us understand the world, whether that information is directly useful to our lives or not. You won't make the same progress outside of academia as inside most likely.
