  • Is it ever too late to do a PhD?
I invited my old friend and now Professor David Stuckler of Bocconi Business School. David and I met while I was doing my PhD as a doctor and have both transformed our careers in different ways. Here we discuss how to figure out whether doing a PhD later in life is right for you.
3:00: What happened to David after he flunked out of a Harvard Tenure Track position.
4:09: What’s the right motivation for doing a PhD (the right and wrong reasons to do a PhD)?
8:05: Is a PhD a good way to take time out from the career treadmill?
9:35: Where to start if you’re thinking of doing a PhD later in life and what to look for in a PhD programme.
12:12: 3 PhD skills that can give you an advantage in your career outside academia.
13.48: Things you can do during a PhD to ensure a smooth transition back into the workforce
17:46: Is it ever too late to do a PhD (hint: David has a student who is in her 80s…)

I'm starting at PhD in Social Justice Education at the age of 49 while slowly concluding a 20+ year career as a policymaker with the Canadian federal government. I'm not entirely sure where this will take me, but I'm going to enjoy every moment of the journey. I'm doing this for me.

Congratulations! Are you getting a scholarship for this? Hopefully it doesn't hurt you financially.

If no one has a clue what your PhD is about then you are destined for a hard journey.

Thank You!😌 I have entered my sixth decade and am five years into my second career in Systems Engineering, and close to finishing my MSSE at Stevens Institute of Technology. I've wanted to become a scientist since I was little and have been doing various forms of research (and development) as a central part of my work for decades. I would like to better understand my new engineering domain, and it's ripe for research. So, your suggestion of a _PhD. Through Publishing_ is intriguing and I will explore this possibility. Whether I actually pursue this or not, I have made it my goal to level-up my research game into doctoral territory. Blessings & Joy! 😌💜

Great Interview! I'm pursuing my second masters (in Computational Social Science) alongside my career of 12 years as a Software Engineer. I'm mulling going "all in" for the PhD and perhaps setting up a small consultancy service just to make sure I don't lose touch with the industry alongside. I really liked the idea of being an "active contributor" as opposed to just a consumer.

Very helpful. I’m considering beginning a Ph.D in my late 40s as a career change from social work to higher education administration

The phrase too late is so scary 😅

I’m torn between Ed.D or Ph.D in Higher Education Administration as my primary goal is to work as an administrator. I am interested in teaching as well

at 6:29 is he saying it's good when people pursue a PhD to unlock more funding and progress in their career path, or is that a BAD reason to pursue the phd? I'm confused. Because the question is "What are good reasons for pursuing a PhD?" and he answers with 1. genuine curioisity, 2. people who want to unlock higher paths in their careers -- but then says there are other ways of doing that ? I'm confused

His oversaturated background is so irritating. It's like she is talking to god.
