How To Build a Massive Chest with 4x Mr Olympia Jay Cutler

  • Want to know how my good friend, and bodybuilding legend, Jay Cutler built a chest big enough to win the Mr Olympia 4x's? As we trained I asked Jay all the questions you would want answered about his chest routine and training philosophy. It's not often you get to hear him go into this much detail about a specific workout so make sure you check this out if you're looking to build a bigger chest or build up strength in your bench press. This is a complete chest routine from warm-up, compound movements, isolation movements and finishing movements.

    @94SexyStang Před 7 lety +38

    Jay is 100% Correct, ALWAYS start with the weaker parts. This is why 99% of people Fail at getting good symmetry! Why would you walk in the gym and Hit your chest or arms first, if that's already a strong body part??? Those parts are going to perform 75% on a bad day anyways!!! You hit the WEAK parts first, while you got the energy and calories....Like I said, most people Fail, because their Training Logic makes Zero sense, and they usually DONT consume enough calories to fuel their workout....they are running off adrenaline(bad thing), which causes your body to EAT the very muscle mass you're trying to build!(called going catabolic).

    I've seen plenty videos of Jay grunting loudly and yelling during sets, even in an empty gym training at night so he wasn't doing it for attention. If you're training hard and fast, and the muscles are on fire with pain, you're going to make noise even if you're trying your best to be quiet. Gyms should be filled with that sound....clanging weights and people spontaneously crying out from the pain.

    • @mnbvcxz123S
      @mnbvcxz123S Před 8 lety +36

      I don't mind people making noise if they're doing a heavy set on squats on deadlifts, or shooting for a PR. But I can't stand the fuck-stains who yell and scream doing a set of fucking bicep curls or tricep pushdowns or something like that. Those kind of douche-bags are just looking for attention, newsflash.... curls aren't a hard exercise to do.

      The best chest contractions come when the chest is the highest point on the body. Ex) on bench you can retract and flatten your shoulder blades on the bench which will make your chest stick out. On flies its the same thing, stick your chest out and it will flex.

    • @Atypical82

      Yes, keep your chest up and out when lifting and your mind will connect with your chest muscles. You aren’t lifting too heavy are you?

    • @clamum
      @clamum Před 3 lety

      I had a lot of trouble with getting my chest to do the movements and just recently think I've started to get it after 9 months or so of working out. My shoulders were doing so much of it. That chest press machine Jay used first? I'd get done with a set and my front delts would be burning, not my chest.
      I have that damn upper cross syndrome from years of slouching, and while I've heard "pull your shoulders down and back" or "put your shoulder blades in your back pocket" it just didn't mean much to me.
      It wasn't until I was recommended Chris Jones' (Pump chasers) video on retracting scapula that it clicked: shrug up, pull shoulders back, bring shoulders down.
      I also personally have a habit of always shrugging my shoulders up so I have to be constantly aware of that working out. You can't contract your chest for shit if your shoulders are raised. I was even doing it during pushups.

      @@Atypical82 And yeah, if you're having problems getting the muscle to do the movement, I think it's always best to kick the weight back, go LIGHT, and do the movement slowly with good form, to make sure you're doing it right.

    Watched the whole video; love to hear the outlook of several BBs. I disagree with Jay's "twice a week is bogus" comment. Of course you can have fine results with once a week. But I think twice a week is more optimal.
    Another consideration when comparing once a week to twice a week: How many times have you had to miss one workout during the week? If you train 5 days a week and can't make it on thurs or something? Once a week means you haven't hit that muscle in 2 weeks cause you skipped a 7 day cycle. But on twice a week, you still hit that muscle once that week.

    • @favor4afavor823
      @favor4afavor823 Před 5 lety +1

      Generally, I think you would just do whatever workout you missed on one of your scheduled off days. Not too tough of a fix with the schedule he described, 3 on, one off, 2 on, one off. He definitely found a way to make it work 👍

    • @MrDanielWP
      @MrDanielWP Před 5 lety

      I haven't seen good results with 1x per week. I always preferred alternating heavy days and light days, for two sessions a week. I always work triceps on chest day, along with front Delts. Biceps with back, heavy and then light. I'm not Mr. Olympia, but I know my preference. Also, only do 12-14 sets per muscle group.

      The bar actually shouldn't touch your chest. When i tore my rotator cuff the doctor told me that when your elbow drops below 90 degrees from the shoulder it is primarily tendons working and with heavy weights they can become overloaded. If your form is clean without any momentum from the body the tendons are under even more stress in this position. But from 90 degrees onwards its the shoulder and chest muscles doing the work.
