When it comes to bodybuilding, Arnold Schwarzenegger knows best. His plan for quality mass and extreme strength isn't complicated. In fact, it's steeped in the fundamentals and old-school exercises that should be at the heart of everyone's program. It's a surefire road to growth, but it's fraught with pain and struggle. If you want to learn bodybuilding from the world's best bodybuilder, you're in the right place.
    | Basics Are Best |
"The biggest mistake being made in bodybuilding today is that people aren't covering basic exercises," says the Austrian Oak. And by basic, Arnold doesn't mean easy. Many contemporary fitness centers are full of people on machines, not in squat racks, and big-box gyms often lack even a single platform. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor."
Schwarzenegger's insistence on the essential lifts is not due to some grandfatherly desire to live in the past. It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth.
    | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips |
    Chest:
"There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye."
    Back:
"For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end."
    Arms:
Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps.
"For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later."
    Shoulders:
Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses."
    Legs
"The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls."
    Abs:
"The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. We all believed in doing 500 reps of Roman chair sit-ups."

A well built physique is a status symbol. It reflects you worked hard for it, no money can buy it. You cannot borrow it, you cannot inherit it, you cannot steal it. You cannot hold onto it without constant work. It shows discipline, it shows self respect, it shows patience, work ethic and passion. That is why I do what I do." -Arnold Schwarzenegger

Ordinary people don't understand how INSANE the sheer amount of volume paired with the level of intensity Arnold is talking about. This is what makes Arnold EXTRAordinary. His body responded very well to loads and loads of volume at a fairly high level of intensity. You and I go to the gym and try to hit the amount of volume he was it would take YEARS to build up to the sheer volume let alone the level of intensity....Incredible.

I was amazed that Arnold requested a 9500 life cycle. At the time it wasn't a more modern bike but it was a very good exercise bike. I genuinely think he might be the greatest man who ever lived. You get men who dedicated their lives to a craft, became millionaires etc, and it's ridiculously impressive... but that wouldn't have been good enough for Arnold. He got into bodybuilding and he wants to be the greatest bodybuilder in the world... then he does it. Then he's like "right, best bodybuilder in the world, tick... now I want to be the best action movie star in the world". Then he goes and does that too. Then he's like "Right, done that now... I think I might run for governor of California". Does that too. Not only is that all something very, very few people will ever accomplish, but also, if you read his autobiography, the hurdles and challenges he had to go through to achieve what he wanted to do were often huge, but he didn't let anything stand in his way. Literally incredible.

@@Zombies8MyPizza Interesting discussion I guess. I still disagree though. Arnold was only a master in bodybuilding. He was a successful film star, but not good enough to be considered a 'master' - definitely A list though. And as for governor, he did ok. Nothing amazing, averaging around a 50% approval rating.
So a great individual sure, but to compare him to someone who literally conquered everything from Greece to India thousands of years ago or to the first man to ever reach space puts it into perspective.
I look at it like this. 1000 years from now, Abarham Lincoln, or Yuri Gagarin will still be in history textbooks. Arnold probably won't.

Whenever your body hits the so-called "wall", it's not always so that your body is needing shocked but rather rest. I was 245lbs body weight and couldn't seem to get pass that point. But whenever I took a break I understood that the body was still growing, but it was inward. My bone structure was actually expanding to support the new and heavier body weight. Same goes for construction, you CANNOT build a second floor on sticks. You must have support beams to hold that weight. Likewise for the body, you must have the bone structure to hold the weight add. I took almost 3 months off and when I returned, I packed on a additional 20lbs to my 245lbs structure within a very short time. I hope this knowledge helps someone that has hit the so-called wall, because I know how disappointed I was trying to add size and feeling like I was not getting anywhere. Do your self a favor and give those bones time to expand.

3:45 Yeah. The Flies I found also for me, as the biggest exercise ones for the chest. No matter what machines you take, this exercise with the dumbbells is simply the most effective for your chest. If you go as far down to the side as possible (it's best when you're outside down stretched with the dumbbells and then you add a movement with letting the dumbbells hanging down towards a short moment to the bottom before you come again back upwards) and then you come back upwards and pinch them together above.
But the dumbbells have to be held at an angle, not horizontally like with the bench press and also not in the other straight line, but exactly in the between diagonal position keeped and make in that holding position the full way of the flys. Like he does here. Then it is perfect for the chest.
I tried also many machines, also with the cross with the cables. But this one here (correct made) with the dumbbells, in flat bench position, is the best one.
(Together with Chest dips. In my opinion the second best one Exercise for the chest).
All others; Machines, Exercises out there, Experimens in all variations, are just suboptimal and more likely to put strain on the arms or shoulders or back or so.
But only these two exercises are the most effective for the chest, if you ask me.

The main thing I’ve focused on in this video was “muscle shock” I can relate to that just from being a beginner as of about month ago: I’ve worked my bicep curls because that’s all I have but I’ve shocked my muscles “every other day I would miss count my reps intentionally so I could shock my muscles threw my reps🤦🏻(I believe I’m related somehow in someway never new the technique just started doing it to see a difference)

As a fan of Arnold i realize he achieved this with crazy genetics not just size but his shape and era. Today he might not win but back then having great biceps and chest was all you really needed.

Man I never appreciated Arnold’s physique until now! I wish I would have committed to working out when I was younger but it’s never to late! I’ve been 6 months in and I’ve come a long way since the beginning. This is so motivating!

Make sure to not give up after you get the beginner gains and stall for a long time. After a year it will become harder to keep motivated because you will see long periods of no progression. That's my own experience at least. I'm probably also doing a lot of things wrong, though. Just keep training anyway! It's the best habit to have.

@@DrStench13 I definitely know what you mean about beginners gains! I’ve probably took about 2-3 weekends off from just being too tired from work or the gym. Im really strict on myself with getting enough rest/sleep, working out everyday, and sticking to my diet! Theres days I come home and don’t feel it but when I look in the mirror and see the progress it definitely sparks the motivation back! I really don’t have much going on in my life besides work and the gym lol Feeling and seeing the gains is definitely my new drug!

@@koatikartpurrps1343 Keep it going!! I'm on the same path. Let's get it!! All I've seen from the Pumping Iron movie and from all of Arnolds interviews is that everyone motivated each other back then. I'm not sure that I see that at the gym I go to. I'd love to continue that type of motivation. Let's work hard and get those extra 3rd, 4th and 5th reps!

@@koatikartpurrps1343 it's good to have at least one or two weeks off from lifting every so often. You have to develop a feeling for that. Rest is the thing that makes you stronger. And for this to be sustainable as a life style, you have to take a step back and not be too strict at times. Think about periodization. But most importantly it has to stay fun for you. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

I'm seven weeks into my training after starting from absolute zero (I couldn't do three pushups, even though I'm a healthy weight) and I'm really starting to see results. My upper body is really coming along and I can't believe the changes that have occurred in 7 weeks of intense training. I'm in the gym five/six days a week for a minimum of two hours. 12 reps, 5 sets with 90 seconds rest in-between sets, always doing a full body workout. Unlike other beginners at my gym who were at my level starting out, I'm sweating, breathing heavily and working out until failure. They are doing half-baked reps with 5-10 minutes of phone time in-between sets and they are wondering why they are not gaining muscle. I guarantee that they'll quit within a few months of now.
I am utterly addicted to the gym and the pump. I cannot tell you how much better I feel throughout the day after working out properly. My mental health has improved exponentially. Plus, I have SO MUCH more energy now. I know I have years of work ahead of me but I'm in this for the long haul. The gym is literally the best part of my day. I just don't understand these people who hate the gym/find excuses not to go. Perhaps they are the sort of people I described above who don't workout properly and wonder why they are still overweight/not gaining muscle.
If you are thinking about joining a gym and starting to work out, DO IT! DO IT NOW. I promise you that if you workout properly, it'll absolutely change every part of your life for the better! If I can do then so can you!
