  • On April 30, Princess Weekes and I attended the Season 2 Premiere event, where we watched the first episode of the new season of AMC's Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. We had an amazing time, and sat down together after the party to discuss the show.
Our talk includes spoilers for the Vampire Chronicles books.

I always thought that Armand in the books as a character was Anne Rice's relationship with her faith, ie starts out innocent, then gets corrupted by the real world, then defeated, then found again after life experience and finding a family.

as a muslim from the middle east. i dont really have a problem with "rashid" or armand being muslim. we all (me and my family and friends) watched it and we lovveed the representation and the accuracy i mean it wasnt 100% but it was one of the best representations ive seen on tv. and having a muslim vampire. i dont think it ties into muslim = bad. jinn exist in islam for us and they also pray to allah so.. idnw i really loved the representation

      Oh yeah, for sure!!
My concern with the representation being bad is that he's not just a vampire, but for 300 years, he was also a leader of a satanic cult who's mission was to kill people in the name of god.

I enjoy your perspective! A question I have is -- in theory, of course -- how would a vampire perform salah? (My knowledge of Islam is limited, and apologize if I worded this weirdly.) While the first two prayers would not seem too challenging, I am curious about how the other three could be performed, considering their timing being based the sun throughout the day & vampires' aversion to sunlight.

I was a busty lady early on too, Princess. :) Not finding bras that fit because your parents want you in training bras still. Or tank tops under clothes. Doesn’t work. :/ Then creepy guys look you up and down. Ugh. Or your mom wants you to literally bind them down as too not be too sexual. Even now, when I wear certain clothing, even not so low cut tops, people will comment like it is sexual and obscene where women with tiny busts can go without bras or wear very revealing tops and not be seen as sexual at all. Why is this?

In the books, Armand is a bit on the edge of maturity in terms of his outward age or how old he appears. It would have been good to see that dynamic with an older Claudia, however, Rashid/Armard is older in appearance than in the book.
What if Armand was Muslim and converted to his satanic cult for a while until he was free from the coven and reverted back when left to his own devices? In the books, he wasn't Christian, until he was kidnapped and forced to take on that mantle. Or maybe he was Cristian and after the Theater coven was destroyed he found Islam on his own. There are a number of ways Armand can become Muslim without offending anyone.
A teenage girl and an adult woman's physical relationship might be a mistake. I understand from the book's perspective the intellectual/emotional/spiritual relationships of the vampires, but by crossing the physical threshold as they have done in the series and taking the a-sexual to fully sexual they have made a choice that might limit their options for Claudia.
I think Claudia will be killed for the crime of killing Antoinette and Louis will be let off because as Daniel has already pointed out to Louis, he left Lestat alive.

I believe a f/f relationship between claudia and madeline would work. I understand princess's sentiments but in the queer community, there is a wide range of perspectives on age-gap same-sex relations... its tricky-- especially regarding f/f. Yes, women are just as sexual as men and can be predatory but wlw romance is just.... something else entirely. I could see madeline being intrigued with Claudia and romantic feelings building off the back of a platonic connection. There was an instant draw between the two in book/movie. So I would not find a problem with them taking that approach.

I don't know, the fact that lestats hair is longer in "hallucinations ", feels like he is somehow taunting louis from his slumber. In the books he's capable of seeing thru even other vampire minds..

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Před 3 měsíci +2

True, but not through Louis's. Lestat and Louis's minds are completely blocked to each other as maker and fledgling. Lestat could perhaps be watching Louis through the eyes of the humans around Louis. In the book, he doesn't have that level of psychic powers yet (he gets it after he drinks MUCH MORE of Akasha's blood in Queen of the Damned). But the show has significantly increased his powers ahead of time, so maybe he could. He would have to know where to look, though, and it would take ages to psychically scour the whole world to just so happen to find a mortal mind who had eyes on Louis at any given point (Marius tries this for over a thousand years looking for Pandora, and never succeeds). And even if he managed that, he would only be on the outside looking in, still completely blocked from Louis's mind and anything going on in his head, hallucinations or otherwise.

Wouldn’t the symbol be a crescent? So a cross, a Star of David and the crescent would have the same power against vampires? How about the Wicca pentagram? Gets tricky. There is the Peacock Angel in the Yezidi culture in Kurdistan. It is seen as Satan in some views, which has been proved wrong with time, yet it could make for a discussion on culture. That could be a good vampire tale. :) How does a vampire born into this react? Especially if born into this decades ago?

There are shows like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT where all the characters are so unique and so self centered, they don't fit together and that's the actual appeal of their story.
Like a pearl necklace, all the characters are part of an ensemble, but they are like tiny islands divided by knots.
In this show, it's the exact opposite.
All the characters need each other, they neutralize the 'negative' traits of the others.
Louis is too indecisive, too moody, too docile ... too boring compared to the other individuals.
Don't get me wrong, I still love him.
Lestat is too calculating, too cruel, too disloyal ... all that dishonesty makes him unlikable and turns him into the villain of the story.
He needs the love of Louis as an incentive to work on himself (or pretend harder) and it's Claudia's opposition that keeps him on his toes.
Claudia is too reckless, too obnoxious and too uncomprehending ... the forever teenager.
Her mind might be evolving to a certain point, but she has the same emotional intelligence throughout the story - the other vampires are the same.
These and other characters can't exist on their own, they can't entertain the audience on their own.
Like a chemical bond, they activate each other and become digestible for us.

I am not sure what you are saying by “stealing morality”. I don’t think there is anything about Claudia that is immoral. She is a adult in a child body eventually and I think her trying to kill Lestat was a defensive mechanism. It is hard for me to believe Claudia from the first season is a child when she was the same height as the policeman in that one scene were he calls her “little girl” or something like that.
