I liked that detail a lot. And not to be mean but I'd really like to just get a snippet of when Lestat learned English too. In season 1 he mentioned how it all sounded like a jumbled mess to him at first and I'm sure he was so adorable learning a new language while interjecting it with French here and there 😅
Unless he was out here unaliving whoever taught him English like Claudia did. Then hmmm...😅😅

as a non-native English speaker I actually DO hope they will make season 3 mostly French-speaking, I think it would add much to authenticity and atmosphere.
(I myself don't know French at all, but tbh it's not that difficult to adjust to reading subtitles, and understanding of emotions of actors comes actually very quickly. at least - that's how it is for me and to almost all of the people I know, so I'd say - it's worth a try)

At current I don't believe it's getting canceled, for a lot of reasons. It's not abnormal at all for a show to not announce a renewal until very late in the season or right after. I think it's to build hype and keep people engaged? If they announced one too early people may go "oh it'll be around later so I can just skip this episode" and that hurts their views. They want LIVE viewership, not people waiting to binge watch. Keeping people on their toes keeps them tuning in. Also they did potentially cancel Night Island, so they may be thinking about toning the budget down, but I doubt that when they've announced another spin off. And Mayfair Witches DID succeed in terms of cable viewers (I couldn't tell you how well it did with streaming at the time it was on, someone else may know), so right now it'd be very foolish to cancel this one.

As I was watching Armand's take on his interactions with the Lestat, I absolutely read it as an obfuscated and amended retelling. In those scenes, it is painfully obvious that, even now, Armand is not completely over what Lestat did to him. The pain is very much still real, to some extent, and the retelling confirms that more so than you would expect. It is highly possible, that the story we got in the source material is actually the real story; and what Armand is now telling Daniel is pure fiction, simply to make Armand seem better than Lestat in every way. A grandiose glow up of his own prowess and majesty, bereft of any real truth. If that's true, at the deepest level, then it only goes to show (even more so) how the pain of Lestat using and abandoning him still lingers. Man, I freaking LOVE Armand in this!

    • @BriarPatchNyra
      @BriarPatchNyra Před 3 měsíci +3

I think Assad Zaman said it best, all that matters is this is how *Armand* feels about Lestat and his actions. At least that's all that matters in terms of who Armand is and how his feelings are effecting what he's doing now.

    • @cyanrose499
      @cyanrose499 Před 3 měsíci +3

I feel for Armand too. Yes, he has his own manipulative tactics brewing but I see it more as him being super awkward with his interactions rather than purposefully sadistic.
He feels like he needs those around him to depend on him in order to have a relationship with them (whether it's his coven or his lovers) and I do believe he takes it way too far and changes his mind impulsively, then tries to sabotage the world he's built for them rather than allowing them to go free on their own.
It's not an excuse (considering he's been around for centuries and could have learned better by now) but he comes off as someone who has never had a truly mutual connection with someone, but always had to be on his toes and question everything before deciding if he should eliminate them or convert them

Rolin Jones has explicitly mentioned that Armand is lying at least by omission:
“there are characters that are in it, and there are characters that are removed” because of Armand, but he doesn’t want fans to think Gabrielle won’t be part of the show.
“Gabrielle - not particularly somebody I think Armand wants [mentioned]. But don’t worry, it’s coming,” Jones assures, adding, “If there’s a Season 3, Lestat will get to tell his version of the story that will be wildly different about what happened there.” He doesn’t stop there: “In my head, other than Lestat, [Gabrielle is] the central character of Season 3. The most important character.” Whomever they cast in the role in the potential third season, it will have to be “someone who can do dubious battle with Sam. Sam is absolutely the biggest instrument,” Jones notes.
Gabrielle is not being left out of the show. Be patient. We haven’t gotten to TVL yet, just events from it, from Armand’s POV - who is definitely fucking with things both in his story and people’s memories.

Least can tell us about himself, Armand, Gabrielle, Marius and what he knows about Akasha. Marius can then be brought in and tell us the rest of Armand's story, his own, and more about Akasha. While all of this happens, in the present we can see the shifting of the characters relationships, the Talamasca can get more involved, the new vampires can be used to show us what would happen if they conquer the world. I think that, after this season, the scenes in the modern days are going to be more and more important, the first interview has to tell about Lestat, Louis, Claudia, Armand and the vampires of the theatre, Lestat's also has multiple important vampires in it, but it does serve the purpose of shortening theirs. It's a TV show, they want to go on forever, but if they keep needing to be renewed each season, then it's normal to keep the major event and climax of the series for last, while moving other important events before Akasha awakens.

When you say that you would be able to understand the nuances of the actors' performances much better if they spoke in a language you speak (English), I'd say that really depends on where you spent your formative years.
For example, I'm Dutch and most of the media I consume is in different languages (mostly English) - but I'm so used to either learning that language or reading subtitles that it doesn't bother me at all. Dubbing is only done for children's media - anything for adults only has subtitles. However, it's not the same at all in countries like France or Italy where dubbing is much more common and a larger part of the media consumed is in their native language. All of this goes hand in hand with how confident people feel when speaking a second or third langauge as well - and how closely you relate your mother tongue to your identity as a person. It's really fascinating.
Anyway, any time I hear an American say that they struggle to get into a movie/show because it wasn't in English I can't help but laugh a little bit, because... Welcome to our world.

    • @MavenoftheEventide

I love foreign films and watch them with subtitles all the time. But when you have a non French speaking actor doing entire scenes in French to a non French audience, you just don’t get the same nuances and emotion he’d be able to deliver in a language he speaks on his own to the English speaking audience it was written for. When a fluent speaker of a language is speaking it, they can put their whole soul into acting and portraying all the depth beneath the character, but it just doesn’t come across for me when it’s done unnaturally in American/English tv shows. For instance, Daciana speaking Romanian in ep 1 was great, and then Louis and Claudia’s non fluent Romanian made sense and worked with how their characters were trying to communicate in a foreign country. But the flashback Paris scene being entirely in French did a disservice to both the actors and the script in this case for how the audience could receive it.

But like... I was actually mad?? Usually, I have enjoyed every single change AMC has made to the story, even those that have infamously upset other book fans; but this whole take on the Vampire Lestat had me yelling at my screen "that's not how that went!!" If I'm not mistaken, Armand did not meet Lestat by telepathically adressing him at the Thêatre - in his single performance as a Vampire - but rather they met at a church -I think it was la Chapelle des Innocents but that could be quite off - where he was hiding alongside Gabrielle. Now, I understand why they wouldn't want to introduce Gabrielle just yet, but.... having him still see Nicolas as a Vampire? Having him still perform?? I think those affect the story!! And who were the people he m*rdered when the curtain fell?? Were they his thespian friends? In which case, wow, he is thrice the b*stard I thought him to be! And all that I could have delt with... but Armand's baltant, poorly written self-insert fanfic?? I felt myself on the brink of either tears or manaichal laughter at the "Je t'aime"! I think I was ready to m*rder something. I love Armand to bits, and I know he is proverbially a simp for Lestat, but I just wish it was written differently that's all! Anyway. I'm so terribly sorry for this relentless venting of my feelings. I loved the episode, regardless, and Maven's review is thorough as ever 🙌 (I'm 10000% certain that Armand and Daniel did go through a few blenders back in the 80s but present day Daniel got a sort of self-preservation memory loss about it. And can we talk about the Sartre cameo??? Tell me that wasn't pure gold).

@mavenoftheeventtide!!! Just thank you for all these videos, you don't know how much the show and the books mean to me. Your videos are everything. I read books 1 through 4 in high school. I graduated in 97. I was a marine for 10 years, then a cop for 2 years, and I went to prison for 5 years. I was in Solitary Confinement for 3 and a half years. In those three and a half years I read over 1,000 books. There I read "Interview" again, all the way to "Blood Canticle" and it was the best time of my reading life. When I finished reading them it made me want to be a writer. Anne Rice, Stephen King, and JK Rowling saved my life. (I went back to school and got my MFA in Creative Writing in 2022, and I'm now writing a memoir.) Watching episode 10 was amazing. Even though the show has taken a lot of liberties with the book, I still love every minute of it. Episode 10 was like being locked in my cell wrapped up in Anne Rice all over again. The scene where Lestat throws the crucified Christ was so mesmerizing. I know it didn't happen like that, but I didn't care. It was great. The last 3 episodes have been great. I didn't like Assad Zaman last season, but now I think he is superb! Anyway, sorry for the long post. Just had to say that. Can't wait for season 3!!! My favorite books outside of "Interview" and "The Vampire Lestat" are in this order: The Tale of The Body Thief, Merrick, The Vampire Vittorio, and Pandora!!! Keep the videos coming, my wife and I are such big fans!!!

Greetings, Maven!! 🖤 One of the things I’ve always loved about the Vampire Chronicles is the fact that as vampires get older (ancient if you will) they become more powerful, discovering new gifts and seeing others they already have, enhanced (of course there are always exceptions to the rule 😂). Seeing how everyone in the series seems to be powered up in one way or another, do you think that would pose a problem down the line as they continue to adapt the chronicles?

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Před 3 měsíci +2

I'm sure they'll find a way to work with it. My guess is the older the vampire, the more powerful their VERSION of the powers will be. Like Louis can set a trashcan on fire, but maybe not a person? Meanwhile Akasha could burn down an entire building with a thought.... or something like that.

  • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341

47:47 - I mean.... they essentially held Armand like a POW and tortured him, let him believe his maker was dead(which was made easier because Marius legit abandoned and didn't come for him until it was pretty much already too late), and implemented psychological conditioning / programming tactics on him. He was basically forced to join/convert or die[ like he'd watched pretty much everyone else he'd known under Marius' care die], and the too-human / too-goody-two-shoes lifestyle was blamed as the root cause or whole entire reason for why he was having to endure going through all of that. I would believe it if he had legitimate PTSD over the idea of going back to that, maybe afraid of experiencing possible repercussions for it again if he were to do so kinda like he actually once already had yet Lestat never did. Marius was basically his GOD-then the cult and their rules were-then Lestat /Louis. And so on. (Unless my brain is seriously misremembering/exaggerating/ something.)
Why are we minimizing this indoctrination like he was entirely just some silly/foolish misguided child?? 😅 🤔 Loll
It makes perfect sense that he might be totally unmoored by the prospect of losing the cult just like he'd lost Marius and not really know how else to live or survive after so long. Until Lestat/Louis/Daniel sort of shines the way.

I was thinking about it and now I have a theory: they are going to show us important characters from all the Chronicles, telling their story and presenting their relationships/conflicts still irresolved today, each season focusing on one, while in the present the threat of vampires conquering the world grows and grows. As a show that's not guaranteed to be renewed this potential final battle could be used to keep the audience hooked, and they have already changed the timeline a lot, so it could make sense to milk it and use the events of Queen of the Damned as a final season, where our heroes(?) are suddenly not faced with armies of new vampires trying for world domination, but the very first vampire and all the risks derived from fighting her. The Body tief plot could be used to make Daniel younger, having the Talamasca involved with him during this interview, and possibly others in the future, to fuse his character with David. If he becomes a sort of link between all the main vampires he can make multiple interviews(seasons) and they can be reunited, adding plots related to their relationships, so that the final one can be focused on Lestat as a rock star, Akasha awakening and the story of how vampires came to be.

I feel like the show aging up Daniel and him being a crical thinker, looking for clues, and analyzing what is being said is what the show is asking us to do.
With Louie being emotional and grateful to Daniel for pushing him to live in the truth...to me...seems like a message we should all live by that we are actually more helpful to someone when we push them to face reality and how their emotions have colored their perspective.

Thank you for all the knowledge and insights you share in these videos! I'm genuinely confused about a minor detail... isn’t Lestat's hair longer in this season? I thought vampires couldn't cut their hair because it would just grow back too quickly. Did the show just decide not to keep that detail, or is it more about the inconsistency of memory and/or further proof that the Lestat shown here is not the true Lestat?

    • @MavenoftheEventide

I think the show would rather you take it as the Lestat shown in season 1 wasn't the true Lestat. This is the length of hair they wanted for him, but the actor couldn't grow it out in time for season 1. So take it that Louis was remembering it too short in New Orleans 😉

I think that is a clue. I think the conversation Daniel is having is not physically happening and he can alter perceptions. I would go as far as to predict that Armand is somehow mentally scrubbing memories from Louis to keep him around and this is why Louis is misremembering things.

48:26 - To be fair... he probably wanted to break Lestat / force Lestat into joining the cult. Holding his lover hostage would be potentially more motivating than simply trying to hold him hostage. Vampires have to be especially strong to be able to manage the Little Drink. Most vampires are too weak to be able to stop themselves once they start drinking, they go into a blood haze, and can't pull away until the person reaches death. It takes a couple hundred years at least for a vampire to get there, but in the book, Louis is still unable to do it when he's over 200. Not until Lestat gives him a huge powerup with all his extra blood.

I fully believe his description of what's going on is just based on how he felt slighted and the impact Lestat had on HIM, and everything else he just presumed with a severe amount of bitterness or just like he didn't care (i.e. Nicki - I think he just didn't care enough about him to recall the details - or discussing him accurately would alter the version of Lestat he's trying to paint)

Why does Nicky look like the brother from Wedding Crashers when he sees Lestat macking with Armand. His facial expression reminded me of that.
Great episode. How is Louis going to take down the coven? He is just not powerful enough. Also, I thought Lestat was more powerful than Armand when he was first made? I know Rolin Jones said they were not going to be so concerned with who has what powers, but it does set a kind of hierarchy. At this point when Louis is in Paris, Lestat has already drunk from Akasha, so Louis should be far stronger than he seems. What happened to the rule about how a strong vampire like Magnus should not make a fledgling?

This is such a good episode and reaction. I was worried that Armand was going to kill Louis until he started fondling Louis's hair. He can't keep his hands off him like Lestat. Is anyone surprised that Louis invited Armand upstairs after telling him about his history with Lestat and Claudia not living for long? I wonder if Louis's motive is to seduce Armand to convince him not to tell the coven to kill Claudia. Do you think Armand really loves Louis or is he using him to get to Lestat? I know Lestat rejected him and I wonder if he sees Louis as a prize. On a side note, Louis did not look like he was into that kiss lol

From the 1st season, I have loved Jacob Anderson's portrayal of Louis! I'm dismayed at the thought of Louis not appearing in S3😢. Since the showrunners have already altered the canon of the books, i hope they create a way for Louis to hang around, even if it's just in the background. ❤

Anne Rice was an extremely good writer, only missing greatness because of her choice to be a genre writer; particularly a writer of supernatural material.

I swear to god if anyone could make the whole “Lestat having a horrible misadventure on the loo” bearable and even funny.. it’s Sam. But I’ll be ok if they leave that out
I also read that Armand is purposefully leaving out details and individuals such as Gabrielle who is probably going to be in season 3 or 4

Also, their French is not great, one more reason to hope they don't keep it up for Lestat's backstory. As a French person I was grateful for the English subtitles on those passages, sometimes they were really hard ton understand.

35:08 - You know, I was initially really thrown by Armand saying this about Magnus too, but then I remembered that Armand introduced himself to Louis as Louis' coven leader too. I think his cult/coven kinda just claims any or all vampires hanging around their territory as one of them by default even if or when they technically aren't. Hence also calling Magnus a "wayward" member, or whatever, too. "Members" who refuse to join up or follow the rules properly are probably deemed lawbreakers and marked for punishment. I'm kinda getting the impression like Armand's coven/cult hasn't _really_ grown that entirely much since Lestat shone light into their shadows and like Armand is still under a fair bit of peer pressure to maintain the status quo.
    Buuut....maybe I'm wrong, idkk. Lol

(I think they're trying to set it up like it was as much or more Louis than Lestat who finally shook Armand out of Armand's old brainwashed ways maybe)

Not speaking to the books but I can't recommend watching the one, and likely only, season of Mayfair Witches.

There is a second season and I…am…a Mayfair Witch…apologist…I don’t think it is as bad as others say and it had Quintron as the hotel band…so it isn’t 💯 bad. I just saw a commercial for the next season coming 2025!

@@wildmarjoramdieselpunk6396 Well maybe they will address issues in the new season. As for enjoying it you keep on doing just that. Some shows click or resonate with certain ppl and not others, like me for instance. It was likely saved by the desire to establish their streaming universe so let's hope they make use of this second chance. :)

This is my fave episode from the show so far.
I wished there were more scenes from the flashback with Lestat and Armand.
It was refreshing and lovely hearing them speak in French. I have to disagree with your point of view regarding the flashbacks when they talk in French.
It gives more realness and dedication to the books. Having Lestat speak French as the first language, it makes perfect sense, and secondly they are in France.
I loved when the actors learnt how to speak in a diffrent language. When I heard the actress who played Claudia speak my mother tongue, Romanian and other languages at the same time, I was impressed.
Sure, some words were weirdly pronounced, but I understood them and what they wanted to transmit.
You have realize the fact that vampires are from different parts of the world in the books.
They are quite capable of different skills, including speaking different languages. So to make it more realistic, the actors have to speak and learn a different language for a couple of scenes and episodes.

I personally don’t think 1600 vampires could take over the world. They would really have to act in unison, without much in fighting. I don’t think that would happen and also, once their victims know the sun destroys them, they are literally toast! Or if they find Those Who Must Be Kept and destroy them…whatever form they take in the series. Men can stay up all day, killing them. Unless the mind control and time stopping is reinstated often, but then there aren’t any gambits.
