Our advise, as an EV Manufacturer Start-up, would be to isolate the charger from the CAN Bus and connect to it with a laptop in order to see the messages that it is broadcasting. If there is a fault other than the communication, you will know. You mentioned this charger is from Siemens, but I'm pretty sure they are just reselling a TC Charger as it looks exactly the same as the one we use (but at a lower voltage). Those charger needs an input from the BMS, normally as a CAN message to start charging. There are 2 messages, both on 2 bytes, one for the targeted termination voltage and the other for the max DC current. Since this particuliar charger handle the EVSE (pilot and prox) itself, it might be a little different, but not that much as the BMS must be in control of all current flowing.
Once the charger works as isolated form the CAN bus, like other suggested, plug back on the networks just the BMS to make sure it is still working. Maybe you have a bitrate difference between two devices.
Then, you mentioned in the video that you checked the pinout of all the plugs so it should be good but a fault would be thrown if the DC connector was inverted.
In resume, I think you pinpoint the trouble correctly to the CAN bus, so I would check that first with a laptop and an USBCAN or a CANALYST and have a look at what is running on this bus.
Hope this helps. I'm sure we can be of more helps with more details on the build, if needed.

@@ElectricSuperCar Also these TC chargers won't do anything if there is no DC voltage detected. There might be a contactor between charger and battery pack (or it is the main contractor for example) and if that doesn't close, the charger won't see the high dc voltage and not do anything.
I don't know if this is equal to a TC charger, but if it is, it probably has some pcb in there that handles the EVSE communication. That pcb might or might not be connected to the CAN bus and it likely be powered by the 12v output of the AC charger.
Lots of assumptions but I hope it helps.

Make sure the termination resistors or terminating nodes are at the physical ends of the CAN network. Also make sure the connections go from node to node to node etc., no ring, star or stub connections. If the slaves can auto detect the bit rate make sure the Master has a fixed bit rate. Any node that cannot auto detect set the rate to match Master. Also make sure every node has a unique ID. Hopefully atleast one of these gets everything talking.

You may want to do some research on connecting stranded wire. My understanding is that crimp connectors should be used, not solder. The issue is solder turns stranded wire into solid wire which when flexed eventually breaks. That's why stranded wire is used in automotive applications where the wire is constantly flexing.

Since your pin outs are good I would start checking that all the grounds/neutrals/returns are solid. PLCs and drives are really finicky when it comes to cable noise or bad grounds.
Edit: To be more clear, anything that is communications should be shielded cable that is grounded. It was a necessity in the lehr loaders I used to build and install in glass factories. I’m not sure how necessary it is in an EV but it is a high voltage system so it’s just my 2 cents.

I was a broadcast engineer for years, one particular model of HDTV transmitter used CAN Buss for communications between control boards, exciter amplifier, and final Power Amplifiers. I recall a CAN Buss wiring getting a few wires shorted on the bus wiring, which took on the communications IC Chip on most of the PA " power amplifier" modules. I basically had to go online and order new IC chips and purchase a soldering station for surface mount Integrated Circuit soldering, and replace approximately a dozen of these ICs to gain back communications on the CAN Buss. I'm just putting this info out there, this all started because of shorted wiring in the buss wiring. Don't know if this is what your problem would be, but for what it's worth.

Not weird european thing, thats a US market specific connector. Europe uses a different connector. The US one is often known simply as J1772 or J1772 Type 1. Europe uses J1772 Type 2 or "mennekes" which has 3 phases and a neutral.
For US usage. You can use L2 interchangeable as the true L2 in a domestic split phase system or as a neutral in either industrial 220V single phase or domestic 110V single phase. The standard allows both and the onboard chargers are designed to tolerate both.

Id probably try a few things:
an oscilloscope on the can network to check on the signal
Check can for is the right messages are passing and any trouble codes
Check sequence of operation and interlocking on the high voltage DC side for any issues (like contactors needing to be closed first so the charger can see DC voltage from the battery in the right range for a healthy battery, many chargers require that before they start
re check the can wiring matches specs, I know he mentioned using some wire designed for can but the branches of the trunk didn't look like they were using that special wire, with relatively long and high speed data connections (as in more than a foot or two and into kilobits per second) things can get interesting and seemingly minor issues with wire become major problems, shielding is important, as is lengths, especially of any branches, but also things like characteristic impedance which is also why those termination resistors are needed, if you have a mismatch of the wires or miss a termination resistor the signal will bounce off and back down the wire interfering with itself, I don't know the exact specifics for can in particular but I'd expect that branch for Jerry's laptop should be terminated whenever a can device isn't connected and I would not be surprised is the characteristics of the branch wires were wrong and creating reflections at one or both ends of each branch due to impedance mismatch.
I'm in IT and deal with a lot of non Ethernet "networks" for various things and I've seen a few of these types of issues crop up, multi drop bus networks (which can is) in particular can be very picky and if you only have worked with point to point or very slow and/or very short cabling (in signal time vs speed of propagation, so short here means very short, and is inversely proportional to speed, in high speed terms for things like connections to ram I side a computer or inside of computer chips, long might be well under a foot) you may not realize how important some seemingly minor specs can be.

Your video production is pretty good although I think the biggest room for improvement is microphones.
A good mic could dramatically improve your video. I'm not confident enough to give a recommendation, but there are tons of resources online to get recommendation at any budget.

You may have to charge each cell individually then try again. All it takes is one cell reading under 2.7v and it wont function.

I'll have to get a CAN adapter and talk with the BMS, see if something like that is going on

    • @jimbobbyrnes
      @jimbobbyrnes Před rokem

@@smoothbraindetainer Ya thats true for some reason i assumed it would be wired in 4.2v but that would not make sense for any electric motor. It may just be 1 cell that is faulty and you will not know unless you tested every cell individually or if the computer was smart enough to display a error with a pack of cells then your stuck checking every one yourself. Because it took him so long to make the hummer chances are the batteries got really low and is causing these issues. Its the most common problem with lithium batteries and its the same reason why samsung phones are popping open because of the batteries inflating. Charge your batteries! 3.7v for long term storage.

Some hanging traverse panels on the ceiling would help a lot more with the reverb. These "slats" protuding from the ceiling trap low frequencies and dampen them significantly better than those tiny foam pads on the walls (which are better for high freq dampening)

You could build a short extension cable for your can bus connections then sniff the traffic. You can sniff with a scope. I also recall that if you have access to the individual wires you can use a clamp on sniffer. Of course your can topology is important, but I recall the owner already me noted that.

I am an EV battery Pack design Engineer and have also worked on the power electronic of EV, you should purchase a CAN Adapter to log and record CAN message on a Open ended software like BUSMaster and check if your OBC is sending and receive CAN messages as per protocols mentioned by the vendor. 1) Make sure you are sending all the necessary CAN messages to OBC ( On board charger ) as per OEM instructions. 2) Receiving the feedback CAN messages and no fault code is detected. ( Please refer to CAN data sheet of On board charger ) 3- You are using J1772 charging socket and it used CC and CP pins to communicate with OBC please make sure there are also properly connected. Just let me know, I will be more than happy to help you guys out in this project. Kudos !!

Great job. Thanks for doing this! The Orion BMS2 does have two CAN networks, and I think one is internally terminated, so I agree that that probably shouldn't be the error at this point. Two things I'd like to see you address are the communication baud rate and the HVIL connector setup for the Valeo Siemens. So far, I haven't found any guidance on how the HVIL should be integrated, though my assumption is that the charger is simply reading an open versus closed circuit loop.

With a can analyzer i always recommend canalyzer with a can case its a good start, you need to assert that all units on the bus are talking with the same bus speed otherwise no messages will get through.
Setting up a can network will be tricky and you might need a can master that can translate all those messages between the different systems and can profiles.
I spent 4 years peograming EV can networks for inverters, it gets messy quick
