    This time in the Montana Garage we go back in time a bit to when we were scrambling to try and make it to RMRW. In this video we continue with the installation of the Quick Performance Rear End. I figure out how to set the pinion angle and weld the spring perches onto the rear end housing so the rear can be installed for the final time.

    Waaaay too early in the pre coffee morning...my ears pricked up at "digital angle grinder" & thought that sounds interesting 🙂
    Great video, oh & the oil...shed fairies. They hide tools & parts too. No crazy talk...science says to.

      Thanks man. Maybe I should build a digital angle grinder huh? Yeah I have the same shed fairies always moving stuff around on me! Thanks for watching and for the kind words.

    Hi Brad. Looks very good to me. "Overthinking it" is a common problem and I have it too. Years ago a friend with a lot more experience than I have told me "perfect is the enemy of good" and "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I've tried to remember his advice as I do my projects and I've found that remembering it usually works out pretty well. Have a great Christmas and New Year. However consider using an expression other than "that's a way to skin a cat". It's nice to see Moose around your shop. You don't want to scare him off.

      Haha yeah Moose doesn't like that one! I have heard your other expressions and try to remember them along the way as well. Thanks for watching!

    Looks like the Shark Hide is working out well. I just bought some for some new semi wheels i bought. Hoping it keeps shining for a couple of years.

      Yep, so far so good. It hasn't been exposed to much weather yet, but still looks like the day I applied it. Thanks for watching.

    Looks great Brad! I am in the same boat with overthinking stuff sometimes. Many of my friends and family just say "crank up the welder and burn 'em in". I don't think I will do mine quite that way. Your method looked solid! I hope the surgery went well and you are ahead of the curve on the recovery trail! Take care and hope to see you back out in the shop soon!

      For me it's the curse of wanting to do things myself, but not always knowing how to do them. I usually figure something out, but there is definitely some overthinking going on around here!

    You may know this, weld flat straps around the housing to the front and rear of the spring pads and weld the strap to the housing on both sides... I drove a guys 57 4 speed car at the track and off the line when I put power to it and it broke the j bolts, it had slapper bars, rolled the bads and jerked the driveshaft out of the trans. and it done alot of damage... The way I fixed it was put straps around the housing attached to both sides of spring pads and the housing, and it didn't ever do what it had done before on all the damage. I believe it also caved the housing too during the damage... you could of used a string to set the pinon angle...

    • @MontanaGarage
      @MontanaGarage  Před 6 měsíci

      Yikes. Hopefully my perches and welds are strong enough to avoid all that. Time will tell. How do you use a string to set the pinion angle? I don't think I ran into that method while doing my research.

    • @leonardfoster6252
      @leonardfoster6252 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@MontanaGarage with using a string you have to pull it tight and use a level. I have a pinon angle gauge myself... You have to measure the pinon angle to the driveshaft angle and subtract it... To see how much the difference is between them. Should be 1° to 2° downward or +.

    Those welds look plenty good. Once you get that bolted together it should be fine. Great video. Enjoyed watching ✌️ 😎

    • @MontanaGarage
      @MontanaGarage  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah I wanted to go 4 link or ladder bar, but the wallet said it had to be this way for now. I think this leaf spring/Caltrac set-up will work great, I just wish I could lower the car in the rear a bit. Thanks for watching.

    Hey Brad, thanks for the advice, so you ended up with a neutral tail shaft at the transmission and 2° down at the pinion. Is that correct?

    • @MontanaGarage
      @MontanaGarage  Před 4 měsíci

      Sorry for the delayed response. I cannot remember if the tail shaft was neutral. But whatever the tail shaft was, I set the pinion 2 degrees down from that if I remember right. Hope that helps, nd thanks for watching.

    Good video Brad. Enjoy your content very much. What size rim and backspacing are you running and what size Hoosier? Appreciate it. Merry Christmas

    • @MontanaGarage
      @MontanaGarage  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks Frank. The Hoosiers are 29 x 14.5-15 and the wheels are 15x10 with 4.5 backspace. The rear end is 55" wide, and of course the car is mini tubbed and the springs relocated into the frame to make it all fit.
