haahhaa )))
:D :D :D :D
We, as a family, have one more tradition: Absolutely everything has to be prepared on the table before we start our Christmas dinner, because during the dinner noone can get up from their chair.
Také
Same!
seconded! we have to all get up together after the meal
Stejné
I always get shit for this. It became, well, tradition :D
I have a carp scale in my wallet. I even showed the scale to my mortage officer as proof of income...
I actually have a carp scale in my wallet right now since last christmas :D
Has it brought you financial security??

I started watching your videos yesterday. My husband came home from work and typed in something into my iPad and said "here. You'll understand me more." Now I'm hooked. I am from Texas and he is from Czech and these videos make me laugh :)
Czech language makes my head spin when I even think about trying to repeat what my husband tells me. Where is a good place or software to learn it??
oh if only there was a good software, Samantha. Like I talk about in a lot of my videos, I love having online lessons with real teachers at italki, but if you're just starting out the Duolingo app is not bad!
I suggest Pimsleur. It helps you learn the impossible pronunciations
@@damonheer5203 thank you.
@@damonheer5203 I tried a lesson after reading your comment and it was very helpful for me to hear and understand the pronunciations like you said. Thanks again
No a co to udelalo???

Každý rok musí být v peněžence nová šupina. Letos tam dám asi rovnou půlku kapra, abychom ten covid přežili i finančně 😂😂😂
Here's to all the Czech people who shed a tear, when you said "For those of you, who can't experience a Czech christmas this year..."
Thanks for this video. By this time we suppose to be with my family. Our flight was cancelled 😢
Well. UK christmas has to be enough for us this year 😅
Šupinka v peněžence je nutnost! 😅 Každý rok obnovuji! 😁
Hi from the Krkonose mountains. Our father forced us to keep the lights off on Christmas Eve as long as possible, so the fleas from all the village would move to the first house where they lost their nerves and turned the lights on.
And so it was all the next year.
It is amazing how many Czechs are sprinkled all over the World, most successfully adopting to their new homes/environments. For a small nation/diaspora it is quite an accomplishment. To all those (in and out) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
So true! Such a great addition to the world's traditions!
Ahoj Jen, there is an interesting tradition, that christmas table has always +1 place ready for whoever might come acrosss your house and also to comemorate the people that left this world and can't be with you anymore.
Also, my grandma used to go to cemetery to light the candles and she left there some christmas cookies and cigarets for my deceased grandad. A bit pagan, but true...
What a great woman, I'm sure he appreciated her efforts!
@@DreamPrague Yes, he smoked a lot... :-)
Pravda, u nás také myslíme na pocestné
Oh, we also visit the cemetery early in the morning on the 24th. We usually bring small gifts and light up a candle with Bethlehem light. ❤️

@@DreamPrague can never be without a carp scale.
Hi, in my household, we actually never melted lead...as you now know, it's not that easy, instead we pour melted candle wax :) Works the same and many people use this alternative. Definitely try this Christmas :)
4:06 Botou se nemá házet více než jednou, opakuje se to až příští rok. A kapří šupinu samozřejmě v peněžence mám, opravdu to pomáhá :D
Hah, I'm glad you mentioned the floating candle walnut shells. I introduced this to my Canadian wife's Ontario family and it's become a Christmas tradition (they even did it without me, when I couldn't make it one Christmas) One point is to stir the water in a circle before placing in the walnut boats, and ideally use a large bowl. We also use different coloured birthday candles so folks can tell who's who and to make it interesting (my own hack) is to take some sparklers, and break them up into powder and put into a bit of tissue in the bottom of each boat so when the candle gets to the bottom there is a bit of light fireworks at the end. Also to get the candles to stick to the walnut shell - one should have a candle going off to the side and just use that to melt the bottom of each candle and quickly stick it in.
As a kid in the 60s, I recall we had real candles and sparklers on the trees, something else that would probably horrify folks nowadays. Also the carp for Christmas dinner, typically it was bought live and kept in the bathtub for a while before cooking. My grandfather used to sell them out of a barrel in the town square. I often wondered how cold it must be to reach in an grab them in wintertime. I wonder how popular carp is nowadays for Christmas dinner. Anyway, enjoy your videos. Vesele Vanoce.
Carp is still quite popular, I think, since it's traditional; but it's also become popular to use other kinds of fish. It's the fish part that's crucial, to be honest, because Czech Christmas dinners take place on the 24th and that's still supposed to be fasting period. Thus, fish rather than other types of meat - and that tradition seems to have carried over even without the reason. :-)
We've never had carp ourselves; I'm not sure if it was because it wasn't so traditional in my mom's family, or because father never wanted to kill it, or because carp is a bit difficult to cook well so mom avoided the inevitable trouble of getting her picky eaters to eat it... So we had a rotating tradition of other fish, schnitzels, or "wine sausage". It's been mostly wine sausage in the recent years for us. That's also fairly traditional in some areas, probably a German influence.
Your dog as a goat makes me laugh😂
One of my favourite Christmas traditions is that we say we eat carp and potato salad for dinner on Christmas Eve, but secretly exchange it for schnitzel. :)
I’ve heard that!
Bramborovy salat s rizkem
I see you are so comfortable to speak about Czech traditions, it means you are happy ;) You are welcome also in Slovakia ;)
Moc hezké video.Štastné a veselé Vánoce přeji.
šťasné a veselá vám přeji
Hi! I have one tradition that I observe with my family. On table, when is the Christmas Eve dinner, we have normall bread on a plate and salt next to it. When some stranger come to your house you offer them the bred with salt. Bread is character of hospitality and cordiality. Rejection was considered an insult as if the guest's bread had not been offered. And I tried it and it was really good ;)))) Nothing special...but you know ;)))
We too and one chair more for guest. I always wanted to enjoy any guest coming and also be that guest in other family. Never happened :(
Hi....one of my close friend r shifting to Prague...is it possible for u help them by sharing some actual details about kind of education especially about school....
Great video as always!!! 👍 👍 👍
Thank you for a fun vlog full of memories from my childhood! My grandma used to make mini-envelopes from gift wrap with three carp scales in each, tied with a golden string, one for every family member. We remained poor our whole live. So I went to America where streets are paved with gold to pick up some. Maybe believing in fairy tales is the problem? - Lots of love and happiness this holiday season and thru the year ahead! What's Tobik getting under the Christmas tree? I hope it's not apples!
I love carp and fish soup!!!!!
Me too. This year will not eat of that. So jealous 😯
Hezké video,zábavné.Ten pes s rohama mě odboural.Hezké svátky všem.

Hi Jen, love your channel and been following it for a while. Im from South Africa and currently visiting my Girlfriend in Prague and so happy to spend Christmas with her and her family this side. Getting here in the year 2020 was difficult with visas etc, however after many emails and proof of our relationship the Czech embassy was very kind to help reunite us. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones and keep up the amazing work and content.
Thanks so much Alex! I'm glad you get to be in Prague, even if it's shut down. Enjoy your Christmas holiday!
What a Beautiful Woman!
One more tradition for Christmas Eve, my grandparents followed this every year and based on the look from window, all others also ... the quest is which house will first light up loose and the flies will move to that house for next year. And really all neighbors have dark ... the rescue is someone who do not know this game or on playing :)
These are great traditions. I love them!
And Czechs are masters of entertainment, fun and humour.
Pouring lead is a New Year's Eve tradition in Germany - not on Chritmas. Keeping a carp's scale is familiar, too. Traditionally on New Year's Eve or New Years we would eat lentils (which represent coins) - By eating them you will ensure to have enough money for the comming year. I wonder, if Czechs have a lentil tradition?
A real christmas tradition in Germany is to watch the fairytaile movie "Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel" / "Tři oříšky pro Popelku" on TV, with was a Czech co-production. I believe it is shown around 15 times on the various German TV station during the holidays.
Yeah, we do have the lentils tradition! I hate this tradition though xD
We have lentils tradition and to watch the fairytaile movie "Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel" / "Tři oříšky pro Popelku" on TV as well! :)
Yes, in some regions of Slovakia, we have lentil soup, too :) Usually the sour type, with milk/ cream and vinegar.
@@vevepriezviskova6909 that sounds interesting. Lentil soup with a dash of vinegar is my standard, too. But I've never heard or tasted a version with milk or cream.
yep we have fairytale and lentils tradition as well ... :) :)
I'm just cleaning my apartment and this is a really nice way of spending a break :)
Well, I'm happy to spend your break with you!
I always have a carp scale in my wallet. Even if I do not eat carp and we choose a different kind of fish for the dinner, we always buy a piece of carp as well because it's tradition to have it on the Christmas menu and mainly we need the carp scale 😁
My wallnut shell sinked this year......well oh sh*t 😆
I love Czechia cukroví and Šuhajdy. Im from Czechia
Strašně rád sleduji tento kanál, rád bych vás někdy pozval i s manželem k nám do Jihlavy :)
Do a short video on why you moved to the Czech republic. I would find this most interesting.
So funny👍
I am Czech and I never heard about the honey, dog and apple seeds
In our family we celebrate only one tradition on Christmas and that's you can leave the table after everyone eat the Christmas dinner if someone leave sooner he will not be the next year with them (Během štědrovečerní večeře se od stolu nikdo nesměl zvednout, dokud všichni nedojedli.
Then who is giving me this false information?????😂
@@DreamPrague I also didn't know those three but I can believe somewhere in Czechia someone holds these customs.
@@DreamPrague Probably old people or people from more conservative regions where they still follow such old traditions. I am originaly from Prague and I also never heard about that honey thing or about dog. :-D Many people even don't celebrate christmas at all, it's just free time for them or second vacation.
@@DreamPrague What is more important, donť eat what has wings on 1.1., so your luck don´t flight away. Hezké Vánoce a šťastný nový rok
I am English and have carp scales in my wallet. From Prague of course every year. And guess what? Am yet to run out of money. So it works!!!

You don´t need lead, you can use candlewax as well, and it will definetely melt easier on your spoon.
přesně tak, výsledek bude stejnej, a riziko mnohem menší ... ale ta vaše sada na lití olova mě pobavila, to ste vzali proboha kde? )))
Taky mám v peněžence šupinu.
Czech is beautiful my dad is from there and I am going again next year
Nice video. Though I never heard about like half of the traditions before (I am Czech, spent Christmas at home 28X out of 30).
Taky nosím v peněžence šupinu z kapra :D Je to tradice .
Mám speciální kapsu v peněžence na šupiny.
There is another one: On the 30th November (Ondřej in calendar) you take 4 cups and put them upside down. Under the cups is a coin, a small piece of bread, a ring and a stone. Someone change them the way you play thimblerig (or shell game) anf you chose one of them. The coin means you will have enought money (or become rich), the ring means wedding, the bread means enough food or good harvest and the stone means death (grave stone).
Tobik is so cute 🤗
He keeps telling me that, so I put him in more videos :)
Clever little guy x) Btw, I love your videos. They are funny and well-thought-out. Keep it up!

My mom lost a newborn son, so every Christmas she had complete dinner and a couple gifts for lonely old lady, probably in remembrance. Not the typical tradition, just a lesson in charity for me.
😄 Tobik is such a patient little dog.🐕
Yes, I do have a carp scale in my wallet...and I live in Canada. 🍁
Hi Jennifer,
Sir_Mac here, as always!!!
I hope you are going to have a wonderful Christmas, no matter what kind of madness is happening outside, all over the world...
The thrown shoe(s) thing - I think your shoes are pretty accurate. You are happily married woman, Jennifer, you have your "Honza", so THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOUR SHOE TO POINT TO THE DOOR :-)
I have never heard about the honey smearing thing... Yeah, good for the moment you want to get rid of your husband... Smearing honey on his face and sending him to the forrest. If he is not killed by a bear, the forrest bees will do the job! :-D
Oh my, I learned a new word "equator" - which resembles the name of the country called Equador. We in czech just say "cut the apple in a half"... :-)
The goat thing - I think there is perfect czech idiom, which would Tobik use, when you offered him the slice of an apple... "To si děláš kozy?" literally "Are you making BOOBS / GOATS of me?" .... I would translate it using another, american idiom - "Are you nuts?"
There is another procedure how to "guarrantee" your wealth in upcoming year. The only thing you have to do is to eat lentils on the 1/1/2021 for a lunch. E.g. - www.igurmet.cz/recepty/maso/uzene-maso/cocka-s-uzenym-1675/
I hate this tradition. I hate the lentils. It looks like poop, it smells like poop and ... and I don't want to eat it ... I believe my money will come through my hard work, not through eating the lentils...
Sir_Mac

Interesting, we like to eat carp for Xmas in Hungary, too. However there are other typical Xmas dishes too, its not mandatory. Prague is marvellous, cheers
Kapří šupiny nosím v peněžence už od dětství. Každý rok sice přidávám nové, ale zároveň se mi ty předešlé nějakým záhadným způsobem ztrácí. Proto peněž moc nepřibývá -:)

Some of those I heard for the first time 😅 Btw. it is also possible to buy floating candles, if you don't feel crafty :). And in my family, we started pouring the melted wax from those candles instead of lead :D. Also yes, I do have carp scale in my wallet 😁

The best way to do the lead melting is to use a soldering iron (if you have one at home, lots of Czech people do have one of these old chunky soldering guns they used to fix their radios with, those are perfect).
Also, I have a carp scale in my wallet and about 8 of them from different years in my piggybank. I never throw them away.
I'd love to see American point o view on this movie
