    100% agree with what you said at the end. I’m an American born to Czech parents. I moved to Prague about 7 months ago and no one understood why 😅 but you said it perfectly. I don’t want to work my whole life to be able to afford a two week trip to Europe. I’m just here being an ordinary person in a beautiful place 🙂

  • @maggdinka
    @maggdinka Před 4 lety +105

    There is this saying: "Americans live to work, Europeans work to live." From watching lots of vids of Americans living in Europe, I think this saiyng is very true. US is very centred around consumerism, whenever something new comes out (like new iPhone) everyone needs to have it and work to get it, while here in Europe, most of people just work to earn enough to pay for a decent living and afford going out with friends and travel. I feel like Europeans are more focused on experiences and enjoying life, while Americans are focused on goods (having big house, good car, huge TV, new iPhone ect.) and it's just quite shocking to know how many people work more than one job just to afford these things. I'd rather give up luxury items and settle for something simpler and cheaper than spend 18 hours a day at work. At the end of the day, when we are old, I think what matters is what we experienced in life, how we enjoyed it, what people we met and not what we bought and owned, you take nothing to the grave with you but having beautiful memories at the end of your life is what matters and you can say that you didn't waste your time and lived to the fullest.

    • @siegfriedo
      @siegfriedo Před 4 lety +7

      Well you are right, to a degree. There are plenty of people here, especially in Prague, who are fully immersed in the consumeristic life style and their numbers are increasing.
      Scores of people in CZ do not hesitate to take out loans to buy a new iphone or other crap although they do not really need it and work mediocre poorly paid jobs.

    • @maggdinka
      @maggdinka Před 4 lety +3

      @@siegfriedo of course, that's true, I was speaking generally about American and European culture and life style from what I've heard and seen. There are people in all countries all around the world that are into consumerism but US is basically based on it

    • @DreamPrague
      @DreamPrague  Před 4 lety +13

      Yes, these are my thoughts exactly. Leaving the US has definitely made me reconsider the purpose of money, time, and consumer goods in my life. I would much rather forego the latest iPhone if it it means I can enjoy more time not working. Thank you for your comment!

      @DreamPrague  Před 4 lety +9

      It is funny you say it in prague. I live in a small village in the south of czech repubic and that's exactly what we think about people living in prague. If you go to some czech village, i believe you'll find out that people care about money even less there. Or that's only my opinion, i don't know, but here we make fun of people from large cities, prague mostly, that they just work hard to earn enough money. Im really glad that it is not true like i've always though and I believe that compare to americans, it is still nothing.

      Yes, most of the Czechs do not realize how lucky they are to live in this country with its level of freedom (threatened now but still pretty high), security, medicare etc. Usually the every "abroad" experience can really open their eyes. Moreover, the more open ČR is going to be to all kinds of experts, the less extreem will be all negative aspects of our culture... such as hidden racism, xenofobia, populist admiration etc.

The old stress of united states was gone, I never felt safer or more peaceful. When I returned to United states, the old stresses, like safety came back,, and the sameness of everywhere and pointlessness of staying here. Damn girl, I've been binging your videos the past week because I'm an American in Prague for a week to see if I'd like to live here, and this is by far the best video of yours I've seen. Just you being real. As someone that moved to the Bay Area to "make it", you hit the nail on the head about a lot of things concerning that too. Can't say enough good things about this one. Great content.

Jsi moc sympatická a krásně mluvíš česky. Gratuluju k výročí a užívej si krásný život v Praze.

Ovšem člověk musí aspoň trochu cestovat, aby si to ověřil. :)

    Thank you Jenn for your truthfull thoughts.. The best people I've ever met in my life during my travels were the people who's value was not in money but rather in the form of how they could live their life by enjoying that were around them. I guess you can be that in the Czech Republic. Many hugely enjoyable things are for free - such as culture, history and nature. Once I come back I wish I could introduce you and your husband to my amazing friends and to show you hidden parts of the country that are a true natural treasure only a few local people know about them..

    You know, it may sound like nonsense to some, but my main reason for leaving the US was that I did not want to have a car-dependent life. I'm not against cars, but car-dependency. I know that there are a few exceptions in the US where you could live without a car, but they are VERY few. Overall, it's a default car-culture for most. I just think that it's not only unhealthy physically, but also mentally, socially, emotionally, and financially. Anyhow, I just completed 4 years of being in Prague and hopefully I'll get to eight as you just did. I enjoy your videos.

I maličkost ti udělá radost než něco HROZNĚ drahého. I just hope that you will not have a problem with my CZECH. Wish you all the best... Vladimír.

    Thank you for the video - especially for the ending :) I´ve been traveling quite a lot last 5 years as a Czech Erasmus student (Korea and Germany). I need to admit, that almost in every country in Europe, I feel very poor... In Germany, I just didn´t have the money to attend every student party, an expensive trip abroad, going to a restaurant (even) once a week, or buy something nice (I worked part-time job during my Erasmus semester). In Korea, it was much worst because it is even more expensive than in Germany. I felt almost like a rich bch only in Romania and Vietnam :D And because of that, I felt a bit depressed every time I was traveling. I know that it was stupid, but it was just the way I felt, I couldn´t help it... But now, when I work full time, still have quite a lot of free time, enjoying a simple life in Prague I realize, that I´m very lucky - because of the reasons you said :)

    100% agrees with you about taking public transit in the Czech Republic and how it makes you a better, more tolerant, compassionate person. Public transit in the US is not the same, really, though (I've taken public transit to work every day for 32 years), so I think it is also the Czechs - or Europeans in general because folks do the same in the Netherlands as well (helping the blind/vision impaired, giving up seats for the elderly or pregnant women, etc.). I started counting about 8 years ago and I have given up my seat for the elderly or pregnant women approximately 96 times. I've seen a man give up his seat 6 times (any man, on any trip). The sense of self-involvement and lack of compassion in the US is astonishing. You only need look at why we have the president we do to understand the current US culture - which is why I'm moving to Czech Republic.

    Thank you for the video Jen - very interesting thoughts on life and ways of living. I think lot of people go through different life phases. Teenagers may not appreciate the "european" lifestyle so much and they are looking up to the "american way of living" (I was the same way), but with age, your priorities start to change and out of sudden material things dont mean much any more :)

    I appreciate that you pointed out that goods are much more expensive in Czech Republic. As an American, my current choice of country to move to is the Netherlands, and yeah, that can be expensive too, but there's set to be a new Amazon warehouse opened up by the end of summer 2021 in a place not far from Amsterdam. So, I don't have to completely give up on my American comforts if I move there.

    In a word: wisdom. I lived in the USA (NYC) for one year and I absolutely agree. In the US, freedom is like in a few countries, lots of opportunities, you can buy whatever you think about .... I was almost shocked and dazzled by all this, but then I found out that most people live voluntarily as slaves (with luxurious chains)

    Thank you for your personal views. I always thought that Czech republic is the paradise on the Earth - especially last 30 years and this is just next prove of this point. No doubt that there are many others living paradises around the world - it is just that every person well-being is matter of subjective perspective. The mix of freedoms, well being, social state and safety in Czech republic is amazing.
    And as my favorite song says: "Sorry for my english, I am born in Czech." :D
