Americans try to explain Czech culture by interpreting Czech emojis. We've been foreigners living in Czechia for over 9 years, so we've got a pretty good handle on typical Czech food, Czech beer and famous Czech monuments. But what about napping politicians, red boxer shorts and suggestive looking desserts?
Have you been to the Czechia? Do you recognize any of these Czech things? Did we get any of these Czech things wrong? Tell us in the comments below!
Download these Czemojis and many more at: www.sonajurikova.com/czemoji-... Thank you to Soňa Juríkova for letting us use her Czemojis in this video!

I think this is important info so: Please the red mushrooms are not the magical ones (or at least not the ones you probably think), it is dangerous to spread false information because some not knowing tourist might just take your word for it and not actually reaserch how magical muschrooms look. He might then eat it and hurt himself. I believe most of the czech know what to look for :D just ask them.

Hi Jen, about that dessert - that every woman (from the western world) thinks it´s a penis cake, is actually Gognac( or Liqueur ) tip. And about that Langoš.....itˇs really fine "street" food.
But I think, it will be better that someone else introduce these things - Chris and Manish. These guys were here on holliday in 2019, so....check it out.

This video was so much fun!
Okamura's party is called SPD. (Svoboda a přímá demokracie).
Czechoslovak nation only existed as a term 1918 - 1938 so that Slovaks wouldn't be smaller minority than Germans. So in 1989 there were Czechs and Slovaks.
      Cranberries go with svíčková.
Personally I don't see people walking around Prague in these working pants all the time, but maybe I just don't notice.
Zlaté prasátko is a thing on 24th and I know a version where you don't eat anything until dinner.
Big bang theory on Student Agency buses - on point! :-D as well as gross pizza :-D :-D
Overall you have so much insight like perfectly describing Czech in Tatry, knowing about Zeman's public use of a term for lady parts or Jágr in Kladno. Awesome!
And you both mastered Ř. :-)
It never occurred to me how suggestive špička was. :-O :-D

For a bit of context: aside from everything that's been said here about Karel Schwarzenberg (a descendant of a noble family), he had a tendency to fall asleep during long parliamentary debates. It wasn't just the one case, but rather a personal propensity for napping :)
The red shorts are still burnt into people's consciousness as a symbol of the communist educational system, wherein gym attire was strictly prescribed: white socks, white t-shirt and shorts. Red for boys, navy blue for girls. As much as president Zeman likes to distance himself from the communist era, the public would often remind him that his policies and overall mindset are very much in line with the pre-1989 times.

Well I am too young to remember communism but I was told that back then everyone knew someone who either worked or knew someone else who worked with materials needed for your project (in this case chata - summer home) and you either bought it from them or bartered with them (for example pipes for lets say major repair on a car for free if you were a mechanic or knew a mechanic etc.). Commie companies kept poor inventory logs so steeling from the state was simple and hazard free and people didn't mind or even felt justified to do it because the communist regime stole from them and not once (nationalization, collectivization, various currency reforms which were basically nationalization of private savings in disguise etc.)

I'd say the best way to compare them in terms of texture is to friedcakes, just very thin, in flatbread form, and without any fillings (due to that thinness). The only vague similarity with pizza is that it's eaten with toppings, but even those toppings tend to be different and applied differently. Pizza has a thin, non-fluffy, harder crust, while every well-made langoš is soft, doesn't really have a crust. The batter used for a langoš and a pizza is also a fair bit different.

It was very popular during communistic times in those times bistro's ... I remember when we were visiting pool on basic school after swimming I've got hungry ... and there was a window to bistro and I every the time eat two of these :)
It's probably not very often to see it nowadays, but it's not so bad food.
    See a recipe:
A bread - czech old honest bread using wheat and rye flour and rye ferment.
A bread just cut to slices
Put eggs, salt, black peper freshly grounded and czech breadcrums (made from rohlik or houska - the standard white pastry), whip and mix together. Put the oil to the pan, put the whipped egg to that a fry like a slim pancake from both sides.
Put to the bread slices, add a czech mustard (plnotučná), pickles (usually gherkin and red pepper (kapie)) and sliced onion.

About chata: Yes there was a saying during comunism that "If you don't steal you steal from your family". Stealing was done from work. There was a lot of construction so usually it was this construction material that was stolen. Managers kind of accounted for this so they always ordered more material than was needed. So that was very helpfull when you wanted to build your own house. But people build Chata mainly because there was little recreation here. No see or ocean to go to for vacation and relax. Just mountains foressts and some lakes. So we build these little cabins to spend our free time there.

You do your Svíčková from beef? I use pork tenderloin for mine. And yeah, it's cranberry, but I don't like it on top as well as a slice of lemon and whipped cream. But I love Svíčková 😍
Need to mention that langoš is garlicy. And it's delicious 😁

I have no intention to correct you since you did really great job describing all those bizarre things that somehow got part of our culture. Just one "funny note" on Kofola. The story is that it got invented (deeply in communist era) to get rid of remaining caffeine from coffee roasting. Another more funny story is that it was invented as a replacement of a "western" (and thus bad, wrong, capitalist, ...) Coca-Cola. It was very popular during the communist era but not much after the revolution. People wanted everything western back then. The beverage itself was being made in the local pubs from "Kofo" syrup whose ingredients remain unknown. The recipe of the syrup was bought (for quite a lot of money) by a Greek family and they are the only manufacturer since then. And they were also able to "restart" it so it's one of the most popular drink here (and točená even more in Slovakia) again :).

You should try Langoš !!! with garlick sauce, cheese and ketchup...and it is not any version of pizza, actualy it is orginal Hungarian food. And preparation is very simple and quick...you will love it. we kind of adopted Langoš as czech fast food...

Chlebíček ! How I miss them here in Germany where I live now. Gotta get some when I'm in Czechia next time.

  • @zdenkamachnyikova9014

Second picture is smaženka not chlebiček. It is an egg omelete on a bread wih pckle, onion, and red peper. To add to information on the symbol of keys and shaking them on Vaclavák meant return the keys, leave hand over the power.

Kofola was originally meant to be a beverage for miners in coal mines, beacuse they were drinking beer, so they would often get drunk and then bad things happened (sometimes really bad things). To be honest it did not work with miners very well, but czech would totally fall in love with kofola. Plus fun fact: The man, who invented the kofola (it was good friend of my grandparents) didn’t received much many, he got only 500 crowns (which is about 22 dolars).

That's incredible he was paid so little! I didn't know that about the coal miners - a good attempt, at least!

Golden piglet is not about eating meat. To see golden piglet you must not eat at all. And obviously not for a whole day. Probably it depends on local traditions. But never heard about not eating a meat. It really does not make sense to eat all the candies and I dont think that in early days they had spare meat.

    • @proximashining776
      @proximashining776 Před 3 lety +1

True. You shouldn't eat anything if you want to see the golden piglet.

Make sure when you get Kofola, you get it on draft instead of in a bottle and get it on a warm summers day... tastes ten times better!

4:15 This one is actually "smaženka", once a popular snack that has seemingly fallen out of fashion a bit now. It's a fried mix of eggs and breadcrumbs served with mustard and various vegetables on our regular bread, not veka/baguette like "chlebíček".

KOFOLA! I would give my life for a glass of cool, fresh kofola on hot Summer days... or cool Fall or freezing winter days in The pub or the beautiful spring days when you finally can sit outside without having your butt freeze off... basically I would take kofola for drink any day
    .... yeah :D

the keys was the only think that everybody has at the protests during the velvet revolution and it make a sound. They were ringing last call to comunist party at 89. Jaromír Jágr as 68 as the rimemberments on the invation of soviet union in Czechslovakia. And at the valvet revolution protest there were only people of nation Cechoslovakian because we devideted the country at 93.

To nebyl chlebíček, ale spíš smaženka, ta je s cibulí a okurkem. Zlaté prasátko "uvidíš", když na Štedrý den vůbec nejíš až do večerní hostiny.
