    Ahoj! I'm Jen, native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Every day we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

    Just a tip for degrees °C -> start at 0 and go by 10 in each direction (+ cold, warm, hot, extreme / - very cold, freezing, extreme)
    - 30 = arctic extremes
    - 20 = bone-freezing
    - 10 = very cold
    *0 = water freezes, chilly
    10 = cold
    20 = warm
    30 = hot
    40 = hot extremes
    So you know 12 °C is somewhat between cold and warm but closer to cold, 28 is practically hot summer, 35 approaches extremes, 5 is quite cold, 0 is freezing temperature, - 5 is somewhat normal winter cold while - 27 is stay at home and consider burning some furniture cold.

    Great video, as usual. I'd love to give you a little bit different point of view. See, many Czechs, including me, don't point out other people's mistakes out of bad spirit. They don't try to let you know that you're stupid or humiliate you. What it is in many cases, including myself, we're trying to "educate" you (in positive way) so you don't have to repeat the same mistakes, make a bad judgment or an opinion based on misunderstanding of the subject.
    In a matter of fact, I missed this very annoying thing after I moved over to America. I was in similar situation like many Americans abroad. I couldn't speak the language, I barely understood spoken English and when I tried, and said something wrong(ly), very rarely Americans pointed out my mistakes in pronunciation or meaning of the words or phrases. That inadvertently prolonged my learning time since I never learned English in the school or taken any kind of classes. All I had was "Česko - Anglický/Anglicko - český kapesní slovník".
    If someone corrects me, I consider it a free lesson that saves my time and saves me from feeling embarrassed later, when I realize what I said wrong.
    Of course, there always will be people, who have to comment nasty things so they can feel better about themselves. Although I believe that nobody can satisfy this kind of people no matter how good you are.
    I hope you'll take this comment in a positive way, the way I meant it.

    Early medieval Czechs' dromaeosaur cavalry was legendary, even their frenemy buddies over the border in Great Moravia had respect for those beasties. Forefather Czech knew where to buy formiddable mounts. ;-))
    (More seriously, while the Forefather Czech legend is just a medieval legend - later further elevated by early Czech patriots - its events would have had to take place between the 5th and 9th century, in Czechia's early medieval period, before the formation of the Kingdom of Bohemia.)

It could be the result of grim experience with the hordes of invaders throughout the history and consequently harsh life for the common man. However, just returning from Czechia I am encouraged by the young and enterprising people who give me hope for future of the republic.

Most of the youtubers just read comment, that wants to correct them, and only leave something like "Yeah, my mistake" if they know, they were wrong. But you go next step further and make a SEPERATE VIDEO about apologizing for your mistakes and then you all correct them! Thats amazing. How Czech would say: "Klobouk dolů" ;-)

    Another great video of yours, Jen. Thank you for making them! I don't know if I could handle all those correcting comments as easily as you do. But, since you're obviously so good at it, I'm going to - guess what - correct you! 😜 Not to point out how wrong you are, but to help you sound that more Czech. I've been thinking about correcting you on this one for some time, as I've noticed that it's something that you do in all your videos. It's just a tiny little thing, but I think getting it right will make you sound so much more natural in Czech. It's the way you pronounce the letter "d" in "Uvidíme" at the end of your videos, when you say Uvidíme se příští týden. That one gives you away right away. You pronounce it as if it was spelled "Uvidýme". Your "d" sounds hard, but it's supposed to be soft. For what it's worth, this is the international phonetic symbol for it, ɟ - as in the word ďábel (devil). I'm not a teacher and can't explain this better, but I'm sure your italki teachers can help you with this. I know there's no such sound in English, so while it may seem very easy to us Slovaks and Czechs, it's probably not so easy for you. But if you perfect this one, it will make a difference.
    You could also try saying, e.g. Tak zase za týden! Ahoj! (lit. So again in a week! Bye! - meaning "So (I'll see you) again in a week, bye), or some other variations. But... one step at a time ;)

    Hi Jennifer,
    Sir_Mac here, as always!
    I wonder, isn't paní Bulšitová a wife of Jára Cimrman? :-) I think they would form a perfect couple, a great match.
    Jennifer, I know that seeing the same correction 100x times, over and over again, it must make you crazy / angry. But I offer you some lovely and positive explanation for that, why we do that. Everyone, who makes the same correction, he or she cares about. Some of us like you, some of us even love you (in a decent way, obviously), because you perfectly blended to the Czech republic. You are humble, you offer great content in your videos, you want to become a czech citizen, you are working on your czech, which is better and better. And because we do care about, we want you to be the best as possible.
    Let me give you one - you if you would mention, you hurt yourself and you don't have a single plaster at home, I think the audience would send you thousands of plasters, if they knew your address. You would receive so much plasters that you could open your own pharmacy.
    And one tip when you pack your things in any czech supermarkets. Put the groceries and everything you want to buy on the lane in order, how do you want it to be packed. So when Honza re-collects everything and puts it in the bags, it comes to him in logic order. Heavy / glass / packed things first, light or fragile things on top. A pack of potatoes comes down to the bag, than comes strawberries and rohlíky on top...

    • @DreamPrague

      Ahoj Sir Mac! Great tip on the supermarket packing...I also think my new strategy is just to reload everything back into the basket and then pack my bag in peace on the shelf by the door. I've been resisting, but now I have more sympathy for the Cashier. Oh yes, she and Pán Cimrman would make beautiful music together.
      It's a lovely thought, receiving hundreds of plasters in my mailbox. It warms my heart actually. Thank you for rooting for me on the adventure!

      @@DreamPrague yeah, use the best strategy. I worked out perfect timing for lane setup, that I´m faster with recolllecting than cashier even in Lidl (who have the fastest cashiers). I thought it´s known in general, that cashiers are evaluated by bpm (beep per minute) rate. You can notice, that cashiers tend to beep separately every single item even if these are the same (if not packed, what would slow down the process) - because it´s simple trick how to raise bpm rate. You can make a small experiment - buy ten small items, with easy to read barcode (no Chuppa Chups lolllypop hehe), put them on the line together and don´t pack them in the small bag. Logically, it would be easier to count them and beem once. But most of the cashiers will beep one by one. For exactly this reason.

    Jen, it's a lot of fun. I've spent a decade in the US and of course, the imperial system of units was a pain in the ass. But I knew I had to adapt to it. So when I write to my blog, even 14 years after I returned to Czechia, I still carefully write most of the variables in the U.S. units, being aware that a bit over 50% of my readers are Americans. Inches, feet, miles, gallons are bad enough but as you know, the degrees of temperature are harder. Well, it is not that hard. 32 Fahrenheit is 0 Celsius, the freezing point. Then every extra Fahrenheit is 5/9 of Celsius. You may remember that -40 Fahrenheit is the same as -40 Celsius, the same number. And 82 Fahrenheit, a slightly subtropical summer day temperature, is 27.7777 i.e. almost 28 degrees Celsius. This is easy to remember, 82 is 28, digits are reversed. 32F and 82F is clear, they are separated by 50F. In the middle, you have 32+25=57F which is... one-half of 28 which is about 14 Celsius. Well, 60F is not so far from 15 C, it is 15.555 C.
    Beasts and bees LOL. Why don't you learn the actual quote by our Forefather? "That's it, the Promised Land, flowing with milk and honey." I completely disagree that "the better defense against enemies" didn't work. It worked spectacularly and Czechia and/or the Lands of the Bohemian Crown has had the most stable border among all European countries in the history. Find the animated Czech history maps on CZcams, the border in 1019 was almost identical to the current Czech Republic! And the same shape returned many times in the 1000 years. The mountains helped a big time. For centuries, we had an Austrian king-emperor etc. but it really started as our choice (much like a potential future enslavement by the EU started by our choice in the 2003 referendum). But the country is nicely defensible and it's helped the Czech language not to get extinct, like the Irish or Sorbian etc. did go extinct. In that sense, we are similar to Switzerland that could sustain its sovereignty and neutrality with the helps of Alps and lots of guns among the private people.
    Forefather Czech is a legend and we're really not sure whether it was 7th or 8th century. But it's very different from saying that it's the 14th century because that is really a well-established "real history" or "nearly a present". 14th century is the time of the most admired king Charles IV, the time when the Charles University or Charles Bridge were built. In many respects, they were ahead of the present. Around 1350, they surely had a more economically viable reaction to an epidemics (Black Death which killed 50% of Europeans) than the recent reaction to the Wuhan Fauci Cold. You can't compare that time with some pagan savages who came to Bohemia from the East. You shouldn't mock it because it sounds dumb. In the U.S., a country without any similar history, it's still similar to the comparison of pre-Columbus Native Americans' legends with Abraham Lincoln. The former is fuzzy but the latter is not. The fuzziness of some Native American legends doesn't mean that Abraham Lincoln was driving a dinosaur (not even Columbus had one, they went extinct 65 million years ago). Now, Forefather Czech is a legend but it is very obvious scientifically that lots of such tribes had a common ancestor and a more compact homeland, somewhere near Belarus or Ukraine (and it is also clear that the Native Americans had some shared ancestors with East Asians etc.), and Czechs and Poles had to be closer to one another than they are today. This is really science, not a legend. The legend is really a poetic way to describe the scientific facts about the tree of life of Slavic nations and the late Migration Period. There is quite a chance that Čech was indeed the first name of the key leader from those times and his brother was Lech. There was really not much space to completely invent these stories in the subsequent centuries. There is really no good reason why the descendants of these first Czechs should have forgotten the name of the leader of the migration wave. It makes no sense. Your suggestion that it is on par with some BS that an AOC just totally fabricates is stupid and insulting. Laughing about these historical matters is stupid and when someone is told to be stupid and is "offended", it's too bad. It reminds me of the cretins I once met at a San Francisco party. Holy crap, how I hated these arrogant imbeciles. My friend Zuzana S. had to calm me down for some time. She probably thought that she would have made me happy by this encounter with the North Californian people. Poor girl.
    My sister has lived in the French Riviera for over 10 years, dealt with tons of the French customer service personnel, and she is confident that the Czech customer service is a different coffee. And that doesn't mean just apples and oranges. It means that the Czech ones are way more (a whole category more) hard-working and professional, trying to satisfy the consumer, than the French counterparts. And even more pleasant, but without the fake American smiles. And indeed, many of us have the instinct to correct mistakes which is also something that helps the costumer service folks because they often need to fix someone's mistakes.
    Cashiers' throwing groceries quickly is a part of the efficacy. Maybe your priorities are different but the bulk of Czech supermarket buyers primarily care about the speed (I am surely annoyed by every single pensioner, it is usually a pensioner, who blocks the corridor) and the waiting in the line is clearly the worst possible problem with a cashier after downright mistakes in his or her counting. So it is just excellent when they do it quickly and when they don't distract the buyers by some gibberish that has nothing to do with the purpose of supermarkets - which would clearly slow down them as well as the buyer. If you need to talk to someone for an hour and you can't find friends, hire a psychologist. You shouldn't blame the cashiers but you shouldn't blame the system, either. It is a great system. The system is optimized when the tasks are clearly divided and the supermarkets are places to quickly and effectively get food. Go to the pub for a more sensible environment to chat. As others, I am not trying to be rude, I am just trying to help you not to be a rude clueless whining Yankee because there are many people in this common sense nation who are rightfully angry about your suggestion that a slow and lazy cashier babbling about BS is better than the effective Czech cashiers. The U.S. supermarkets typically sucked. I could tell you many stories from C-Town etc., I have tried many of them in many classes, including and especially the lowest ones, including supermarkets in black neighborhoods of New Brunswick, NJ. Concerning the U.S. customer service, I have seen a lot. A travel agency sold me a night in a hotel near the Newark Airport that had been closed for 3 months. And many stories like that.
