Just to be clear - 'Santa Claus' is a legendary figure based originally on the figure of 'Father Christmas' from an old English folklore AND dutch Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas respectively (hence the name Santa - Saint and Claus - Nicolaus) that we Czechs call Mikuláš.
So, in essence, we Czechs not only do have Santa (that gives presents on the eve of December 5th), but also Byby Jesus, 'Christkind', Ježíšek, who gives presents on the eve of December 24th.
AND - of course - I can't stress enough how much I love fried karp! But how the tradition came to be is that the time of Advent that culminates on the December 24th was a time of fasting when eating meat was forbidden. BUT fish are not considered meat per se by church, so fish was the most 'celebratory meal' that people could eat during this time.

Just a little detail: čert does not mean "the devil". The devil translates to "ďábel", while čert is more one of the devils minion - basicaly like a guy who works in hell. Altough "čert" and "ďábel" mean basicaly the same thing, their role in folklore is a bit different. Ďábel is the boss who gets to be cool and evil and čert is his overworked employee whos main responsibility is all the boring manual labour.

čert is just something like an "goverment official". He is here just for take care of justice, like a police. You don´t have to die, if you behave badly enough, čert will find you and take you away from the world.
And by boring manual labour is meant mostly puting more fuel into fires under cauldrons with boiling sinners and poking pitchforks into those whos heads rise above the surface. 🤷♂

And the Christmas tree doesn't really stand naked in the living room, it's usually bought just a few days before Christmas Eve and is kept somewhere (hidden) still tied up - like on the balcony in flats or in a garage.
When I was young my parents really did the whole thing with Ježíšek decorating the Christmas tree. Not only that He was actually bringing the whole tree already decorated through the window. And the presents too. Full package! 😄🎄🎁 The most magical memories 😊
I am over 70 yo born in Prague. I can remember lots of secrecy about the "vanocni stromecek".Pred tim nez se smazil nas milovany tradicni kapr koupeny ze sudu na Vaclavaku, Jezisek (rodice) strojili stromek a dali pod nej darky. Pak Jezisek zazvonil a celym bytem vonelo kadidlo a my se sestrou smeli do pokoje. Prekrasne osviceny stromek a ta atmosfera se NEDA slovy vylicit. Myslim, ze my vsichni mame takove krasne vzpominky.🌲🐟💗 Pozdravy zHeidelbergu ❤️
I wouldn't say days, if you live in a city you can see people having still tied trees on their balcony during the first or second week of December...well, basically a week before Christmas 😂.

We love Czech Republic and they culture. In Poland we have very simlar Christmas day like Czech, but for the diner ( about 5-7 pm ) we serve about 12 meals ( pierogies, carp, potato salad, barszcz, seed cake, greek fish, kutia, cheese cake, cabbage with mushrooms and in my family egs with mayo ). Imagine doing 12 difrent meals, all day in kitchen :D Merry Christmas.
Similarly in Czech countries the dinner on the 24. December - Štědrý večer was served as nine dishes comprised of the feast dishes of poor people. They were: Fish soup from carp’s heads and innards, pease-pudding, barley with dried mashrooms (kuba), sour dough sweet buns with sour cream and plum preserve, stewed dried plums, stewed dried pears, fried carp with potatoes or a potatoe salad, carp in a black sauce (černá ryba: old traditional dish with sweet and sour sauce, with dark bier, gingerbread, dried plums, dark syrup etc.), and apple strudel. Každý rok se těším na smaženého kapra :) Polévka, kapr, řízek a klobáska a pak dárky a gauč :D Ale stromeček si teda zdobíme sami, to na Ježíškovi nenecháváme :D

Bylo to pro nás malé děti úžasné překvapení, když zazvonil zvonek a na chodbě za dveřmi byl stromeček. Pak jsme byly již větší a zjistili jsme, že stromeček zdobí otec. No a pak jsme ho sami zdobily nebo jsme pomáhaly. Ale to největší kouzlo bylo, když ho "přinesl Ježíšek." Dnešní rodiče jsou již líné připravovat dětem překvapení, s kterým se pojí dost práce. (Tajit nazdobený strom někde ve vestibulu. My sami jsme to jako překvapení dělali jen do doby, kdy jsme před dětmi uhlídali jeden pokoj a nemuseli jsme jim složitě vysvětlovat, proč tam nesmějí chodit.) Jinak vše stejné.
To be honest, lots of people like to eat fried carp during Christmas. It's because Christmas carp is specially raised to be eaten at that time. If you try to eat it any other time of the year, it tends to smell and taste extremely fishy. But for Christmas, the carp is taken out of the pond several weeks in advance and then put into clean water. Then, if you know how to choose the correct one, it tastes great.

It depends where the carp is fished from. Cleaner the water, less muddy carp meat. Carps are "underwater pigs" which eat anything from algae to small fish, so pond owners would use cow manure to promote growth of algae and plants. Rivers are somewhat better, but some carps are kept in ponds/dams filled by mountain streams.
Of course, most carps come from the most muddiest waters.

Even years before it was farmed, carp was gotten out of rivers and not ponds. There were no carp in ponds
Christmas dinner - the main difference is that we (Czechs) have dinner on 24th Dec., which is the last day of fasting (4O days before xmas without meat - Christian tradition) and in history fish have not been considered meat.
And actually many Czech families have a tradition to have goose or duck for lunch on 25th or 26th, so the customs are not so different after all ;)

Hello from Australia. Our Christmas meal is of the British tradition and is Roast Beef, roast potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, onions, topped with gravy made from the roast juices. Dessert is plum pudding with cream and/or icecream. Also I put in red and green jelly. 😀🦘🦘🎁

Celý rok se těším na kapra na štědrovečerní večeři !!!! :D A stromeček jsme vždycky zdobily se ségrou samy cca 10 dní před štědrým dnem :) Každopádně když může Santa nadělovat dárky během noci, proč by to nezmákl Ježíšek, to je pro něj přeci brnkačka ;)

BTW, I've never heard of some of these traditions in my life. The thing is, many of these are highly regional, and few people are actually rigorous about them.
Don't like carp? You fry a nice cod instead. Or whatever.
Don't feel like decorating on Christmas Eve? Decorate early (we certainly do).
And of course the family decorates the tree - in many families, that's a beloved tradition on its own.
A odkud se tedy vzalo zlaté prasátko? Za tuto vánoční legendu vděčíme taktéž Keltům. Podle ní se totiž každému, kdo se vydrží celý Štědrý den až do večeře postit, ukáže na stěně zlaté prasátko. Prase je odedávna symbolem bohatství a hojnosti. Každý, kdo měl ve chlévě nějakého toho pašíka, věděl, že je na zimu zabezpečený a hladem neumře. Odtud také pochází prasátko jako pokladnička. Vykrmené prasátko bylo v té době prostě určitým způsobem spoření a zabezpečení se. Keltové navíc uctívali kance jako posvátné zvíře, takže jeho zahlédnutí v tento významný den tomu přidalo ještě punc božskosti.
A postit se má právě od masa a nikoliv hladovět celý den a pak padnout do mdlob. 😀

We actually believe that Santa Claus is a new American version of Mikuláš (Saint Nicholas). It means we technically have both Santa nad Baby Jesus ☺ I love these traditions, they make the long December nights so exciting!

Actually it isn't so new :-) It was brought to New York with Duch settlers as "Sint Niklaas" which was butchered by English (and other later settlers) to Santa Claus
Santa Claus isn't a new version of St. Nicolaus. It's just a new image and name shift: Saint = Santa, Claus is shortened name of Nicolaus. They are exactly the same and only difference is getting rid of the Catholic Christianity thing (as Evangelic Americans often do), moving a bishop into lands of neutral north-pole "elves" for some reason.

However, the look, the outfit and even the North Pole domicile of Santa (Jultomte in Scandinavia) all have existed in the Scandinavian version of Christmas symbols well before they became globally popular thru American movies and commercial means. If Swedish immigrants like Nordstrom (a nation-wide US department store chain) introduced these Scandinavian traditions to Americans via their commercial influence, this can hardly be described as "getting rid of Catholic Christianity by Evangelical Americans."
Just a little trip to the history: The carp is a traditional dish connected with Christmas and Jesus Christ himself, since he fed 4000 people with 2 fish, and the carp was the most common fish in Czech republic. Truth is, historically since 1648 fish were the privilege of the nobility, because the nobility owned the ponds. Fish came back to the table after WWII.

Carps were raised in ponds od South Bohemia since Jakub Krčín z Jelčan built them on Rožmberks’ holdings in Třeboň around 1600. They are raised there since that time till today. It is documented pauper people in South Bohemia begged their establishment not to be fed carp more than five days a week!

Carp returned to the Christmas Eve menu as early as the 19th century. It is true that carp was a more expensive meal back then. Carp boomed after the First World War and the collapse of Austria-Hungary, when it was necessary to replace the lost sales on foreign markets with domestic demand. Back then, carp was eaten with a sweet plum sauce.
After World War II, carp began to be eaten with potato salad and fried.

S tím kaprem jste mě tedy pěkně naštvala. Obalovaného kapra s bramborovým salátem miluju a spolu se mnou tak polovina Čechů. Opravdu to není o tom, že bychom si schválně dávali něco, co nám nechutná, zvláště, když je to o dost dražší než třeba ten řízek.

I love your videos. :D I do think, though, that Czech families "not" decorating their own Christmas tree is very rare. I know it happens, but all throughout my life I've only ever known one family who would leave it up to "Ježíšek". The majority of families decorate together with children. It used to be my favourite part of preparing for Christmas as a kid. :D And as for the tree..in our family, it was always left on the balcony for a couple of days before putting it into the living room on the 23rd and decorating it then. .)

In religious families, children knew from a young age that Jesus had grown up and what he is known for, and also that we people here continue his work and what we do, we do in his name. So "Ježíšek" is not magic, but rather metaphorical theology. The real Jesus loved such metaphors. We are to be like him and treat our fellowmen and poor as him.
My family can be the second one. My parents hid the tree on the balcony and then secretly placed it in the living room the night before the 24th and decorated it. On the "Štědrý den" we, the children, were not allowed to go to the living room not to disturb "Ježíšek". And finally, after the dinner, mom slipped away for a while, lit the tree and rang the bell. It was really magical for us back then.

@@denisemoore6134 We always decorated it on the 23rd together, so the day before. Every family is a bit different, though. Even with families where the tree is decorated by "baby Jesus", I doubt that it's done during the dinner. Nobody can be missing during the meal. :D
More like before dinner a family member sneaks out and the kids simply aren't allowed to go to in the livingroom for a bit, as in not to disturb "baby Jesus" who's decorating. :D Even if the tree is already decorated the day before, there's still the issue of getting the presents under it in the evening without the kids seeing.
In our family, after dinner we would all go in the bathroom (of all places) to sing carols and after a couple, my dad would say he needs to go check on baby Jesus stealthily (and would put the presents under). I never thought it was weird as a kid. :D
I just thought baby Jesus would flee at the sight of children and that's why I wasn't allowed to go. And then, "baby Jesus" would ring a bell and we would all go into the living room. I wasn't suspicious. :D
@@denisemoore6134 In my family, my parents decorated the tree and put all the presents under it during the night and we were not allowed to go to the living room the whole day till the evening (to not disturb "Ježíšek"). The living room was a separate room in our flat, that could be locked. After the dinner my mother "went to the toilet" or something like that, quickly lit the lights on the tree and rang the bell. It was really like a magic for us.
Jen, jak ráda tvá videa sleduji a vždy se velmi pobavím, tak tady poprvé jsem si řekla, že je to naprosto nepochopené, to není o logice, ale o tradicích přece. Všechny děti nevěří na Ježíška? Opravdu Češi koupí kapra, aby ho pak hodili do Vltavy, kord když bydlí v třeba v severních Čechách? Nikdo z Čechů nemá rád tradičního kapra? To jako fakt? Kdo ti toto vše napovídal? Samozřejmě, že ne každý má prostě rád kapra, ale co já znám, tak to bývá v rodinách tak půl na půl. Někdo ho zbožňuje a někdo ho až tak nemusí, ale na Vánoce si ho dá a někdo si dá něco jiného. Na tom nic není.
Ne, není to určitě nejlepší české jídlo, ani to být nemá, je to jen tradiční štědrovečerní české jídlo. Myslím, že o Vánocích rozhodně neplatí, že bysme si na něco pořád stěžovali (jinak ano, rádi:) A že jsme všichni vyrostli na krásných pohádkách a prostě máme je s Vánoci spojené? Ne, české děti neuplatňují logiku, co a jak Ježíšek stihne, je to pro ně zázračné a magické, asi jako ty Popelčiny oříšky. To se těžko vysvětluje, nemyslím to nijak ve zlém, jen jsem měla potřebu se k tomu vyjádřit, protože mi to fakt přišlo těžce nepochopené. Jinak všem krásné Vánoce :)
Exactly! Releasing the carp back to the lake is very rare and stupid because the carp will die immediately. I don't think anyone really does that. And most Czechs love carp! But it can't change the fact this is yet another great and funny video.

Vždycky jsme si stromeček zdobili sami během dne 24.12.. Museli jsme stromek připravit pro Ježíška, aby náš stromeček našel. U stromečku jsme mu nechali nakreslené Vánoční obrázky.
Co se týče zdobení stromečku, tak jsou i v rámci Česka velké rozdíly tradic. My jsme vždy zdobily už na první advent, na Štědrý den se pak rozsvítí.

As you said it is a tradition that the gifts are opened only after everyone has finished their dinner and my mom told me that her grandpa loved to tease her by always being the last one still eating at the table and when he was finishing, although he was already full to the point of almost bursting, he always said that he'll probably get another piece of carp as he was watching my mom who couldn't wait for the presents. 😂

Na kapra se salátem se těším doslova celý rok a nic v mém "vánočním žebříčku" není výše 😂 děláme 2, jednoho klasicky smaženého, druhého pečeného (cibule kmín, koření). Saláty dříve také 2 druhy, kromě klasického bramborový "na kyselo" který se právě hodil k tomu pečenému kaprovi. Takže k té otázce, Ano sakra chutná a prodal bych za štědrovečerní večeři ledvinu 😂😂😂 Krásné svátky přeji!!! 🎄🎄🎄
Actually, both American Christmas movies you've mentioned air in the Czech Republic every year as well. This year, they'll both be on TV on Christmas Eve. Home Alone (Sám doma) airs on Prima channel at 8:15 PM and Love Actually (Láska nebeská) airs on Nova channel at 9:50 PM.
While Saint Nicholas was Greek, he lived in Myra in the southwest of modern-day Turkey. Santa Claus is also based on Saint Nicholas so he doesn't bring gifts to Czech children on Christmas Eve because he was already here almost 3 week earlier.

Mňam, já se na smaženého kapra už moc těším. Mamka dělá výborného. Jemné maso mnohem lepší než nějaký řízek nebo smradlavý losos. 😃

Jasně ta chuť rybničního bahna je k nezaplacení a kosti kterých má kapr snad nejvíc ze všech ryb jsou taky pěkný bonus. Neznám hnusnější a nechutnější rybu. Jen bohužel zřejmě netuší, že cpaní se rybou je dáno tradicí katolické církve a jejích postů, které zřejmě protestanti neznají. To je důvod rybích orgií na vánoce a zavedlo se to už za Karla IV a později obnovilo. Já sám kapra nejím vůbec, je chuťově nevalný a díky kostem nepříjemný. Na vánoce patří "kuba" což je také postní jídlo a když rybu tak asi candáta, nebo sivena, j když loni jsem měl tuňáka. A letos si krom kuby udělám telecí řízek po milánsku, tedy v parmazánu :-) nejsem katolík, takže mohu jíst co mne napadne
Ale o to přece nejde. I kapr se dá připravit chutně a i losos se dá zmršit. Ano, kapr má jak kulturní, tak historickou tradici a jsem rád, že se udržuje. Mě ALE zarazilo porovnání kapra se "smradlavým" lososem. Jak kdybych psal: mám rád na caprese ten luxusní slunecnicovej olej, né to "šméčko" oliváč... Asi tolik logiky :)
@@badaxebadaxe2248 pokud Vám kapr smrděl po bahně,je to chyba prodejce. Pokud je kapr správně vysádkovaný, je zbaven tohoto zápachu. Správně vyčištěného kapra poznáte na spodních ploutvích ,které získají oranžové zbarvení.

I would say that most families in Valachia eat mushroom soup (made of mushrooms colected during the year) instead of fish soup. Also quite a lot of families decorate christmas tree on the 24th morning (until than the tree is in te garage/balcony/hallway), dinner is eaten in the same room as the tree is (without gifts), than children and one of the adults go outside after opening a windov (for the baby jesus to get to the room), outside they have fin with
sparklers and after they hear a bell sound they run back to the house to found gifts under a tree.
Prior to covid, Česká televize actually premiered three new fairy tale movies, each one at each the three Christmas days (Eve, 1st and 2nd). Covid just made it harder so they didn't do it the last two years and I'm not sure if they're gonna go back to the model because since they introduced this model, the quality of the stories went down.
One year they even made a fourth one, played in the Czech Sign Language and premiered on the second channel.
About the Christmas dinner, technically it could be any fish and it would still keep the tradition (since the meaning of it is that a fish was the original symbol of Christianity) and so many families switch to salmon or other type of fish.

České Vánoce jsou nejlepší! Dárečky nám nosí sám Ježíšek (má otce Boha - ten bude asi mocnější než nějaký dědula ze severního pólu). Zkoušel to tu Děda mráz - neuspěl a Santa Klaus má taky smůlu. Moje děti ví, kdo je Santa, Klaus v kterých zemích dárky nosí - je však pomalý a doručí je až druhý den! :) My máme Ježíška a máme ho moc rádi. Mimo jiné, není jedno z nejoblíbenějších jídel v Americe Sushi? Já jen, že ty ryby použité na výrobu Sushi, taky předtím, než byly snězeny, neměli masáž, nekoukli se na hezký film, neposlechly si pro uklidnění klasickou hudbu a pak si hlavu odřízli dobrovolně sami. Kapr je skvělý, jen má moc drobných kostí a musí se jíst opatrně. A kapří polévka je také moc dobrá. A bramborový salát? Neznám nikoho, kdo by ho neměl rád... opravdu ne. A sranda je, že má spoustu podob - dle každé rodiny, která si ho doma vyrobí. Nikdy nenajdete v českých domácností stejný! Každopádně přeji všem v novém roce to nejlepší a hlavně buďte zdraví a šťastní!
I remember when I was very little (like 5 years old I think) I incorrectly assumed that Ježíšek was the same as Ježeček (baby hedgehog - Ježek) and in my mind I thought that a giant yet cute hedgehog will sneak into our house with the gifts pinned to his back on the needles and deliver them :D
Else spot on video. I know there are exist some people who like carp, they are as rare as unicorns but supposedly so they come out of their hiding during Christmas, yet I have yet to find one them. No one I know or no one any of my family or friends know throughout the ages dating back at least to 1918s, likes carp or fish soup.
My grandfather from my father's side insisted on having a fried carp for dinner but he would eat a few pieces because it was a tradition and he demanded to follow that tradition but then joined with the rest of the family to eat řizky and the fried vídeňská klobása.
Regarding the tree, I think there are only two kinds of people in Czech. Those that buy it earlier and decorate with family to have that beautiful centerpiece in their homes and those that buy it later and hide it either in a garage or a balcony then decorate it on the 24th and reveal it together with the presents. (In my family the tree would be decorated by either my mom or my grandad and locked in a bedroom to be then revealed with the gifts after the dinner when the bell rings).
I loved it but I understand the bit about the patience the kids have. It was very intense especially when you add to it the legend that whoever rises up from the christmas dinner table before the dinner is finished will die within a year :D
1) Many Czechs decorate their Christmas tree sooner than on 24th. It's not a rule or some kind of obligation to decorate it on the evening of 24th. And at our home, we decorate it on the same day we put it into the living room. And in some families kids decorate it too, it's not necessarilly up to Ježíšek.
2) Some people actually like carp, but you don't have to eat it if you don't want to. And yes, many Czechs have řízek instead of carp. Řízek + a lot of potato salad? Yum!! :)
3) For me as a kid, it was just so exciting to wait in the kitchen to see the Christmas gifts and then to go to the living room after my dad rang a bell and I saw our decorated Christmas tree in all its glory with the shining lights on, Christmas presents in front of it and fairytales on TV. Just magical.
4) My mum used to put a symbolic paper fish scale into her wallet for good luck, but I don't know anyone personally who does the carving or throw a shoe nowadays.
5) Pelíšky is not usually the first or main thing I watch during Christmas. It's a popular movie, but for me it's mainly the beautiful and funny fairytales I'm always excited about. Princezna se zlatou hvězdou, S čerty nejsou žerty, Tři oříšky pro Popelku, Jak se budí princezny, Šíleně smutná princezna, Byl jednou jeden král,...etc
Plus Sám doma (Home Alone) and Láska nebeská (Love Actually) too :)

In my 30 years in Moravia, I have never met anyone who didn't love fried carp. Maybe Bohemia is a little different. Carp reminds me of catfish back in Texas. Back in the old South, we used to eat blackeyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck. Here in Moravia, we eat lentils on New Year's Day.
Milá Jen, mám velmi ráda tvá videa. České vánoční tradice jste vystihla celkem dobře, nějaké nepřesnosti ovšem ale jsou. Ti češi, co nemají rádi kapra si ho nekupují a jí právě řízek (i když nechápu, kapr je výborný). Co se týče zdobení stromečku od Ježíška, tak tuto tradici má každá rodina a kraj v čechách poněkud jiný. Stejně tak večeři. A celkově, proč je kapr tak tradiční? Štědrý den je předvečer narození pána Ježíše, tudíž ještě je i večeře má být postní - kapr, jakožto ryba byla vždy jídlem chudých a je brána jako postní jídlo, nejen v Evropě a to již od Ježíšových dob (stejně tak brambory a nakládaná zelenina, která je vždy součástí bramborového salátu, i když každý má vlastní recept :) ). Právě proto bych řekla, že tady máme tuto tradici. Přes to, že to má být "postní" večeře se dle mého všichni dozajista příjemně nacpeme a pak jdeme rozbalovat dárky od Ježíška. On je ovšem ten největší dar a to i přesto, že jsme velmi ateistická země.
Well Jenn, traditions differ from family to family. In our family the tree was bought always during last week before christams Eve and we as a children took out the stand, electriclight-chain, christmas baubles and chocolate figurine collection and decorated the tree with it. When it was time on 24th Dec, sometime around 17:00, the bell rang and the magic happened - there were gifts under the tree. Well, sometime before that we weren't allowed to enter parents bedroom, guess why!
P.S. I like the carp with potato salad, just not the bones it has. And don't even speak about having it next few days also. Well, we were saved by the fried duck on 26th...

Mame rádi kapra, vůbec není bahnitý, smažený je vyborný. A podle tradice "Na Vánoce na stůl patří osmažené maso kapří." Šupinku si dáváme někam k penězům - dospělí do peněženky, děti do kasičky. Ježíšek je prostě "vánoční kouzlo". Dárky přičaruje, zatímco večeříme, pak se ozve kouzelný zvoneček a můžeme ke stromečku. Když jsou děti malé, objevuje se stromeček společně s dárky. Jak děti rostou a odhalují to, že dárky kupují dospělí, častěji zdobí stromek samy. Někdy 23.12. večer, někdy 24.12. dopoledne. To se často v rodinách liší. Někdo zdobí stromek už během prosince, ale to není tradiční. Rozhodně nestojí v obýváku neozdobený stromek. Buď je koupený a ukrytý na balkoně, ve sklepě nebo někde na zahradě, někdy je nazdoben hned po koupení. Ještě jeden "předpovídací zvyk" tu není. A to jsou "barborky". Na sv. Barboru (4.12.) si svobodná dívka dá do vázy větvičku z trešně. Když jí do Štědrého dne vykvete, vdá se.
Nejen, že se těšíme na kapra, ale jíme ho i jindy než na Vánoce :D Je to fajn ryba, i když jsou samozřejmě jsou i lepší.

Hi Jen, there 2 types of Czech family Xmas trees... 1st get theirs in 24th, new and decorated by Ježíšek in the evening and the 2nd type (and I😂) get their tree on the first Advent Sunday and they decorate it together as a family. There is nothing like U said "naked sad tree" in the room for weeks 🤣😂

with the tree decorating: i would say it mostly depends household to household. for example we decorate it the morning of the 24th as a family bonding activity and the only thing "Ježíšek" adds is electric lights.

Tak první díl který jsem neviděl celý a vypnul po kaprovi z "bláta".Kapr je ryba a ryba je postní jídlo což ze štědrým dnem plně souzní.Mimo jiné máme na štědrý den i mnohem postnější jídla a to prosté jakéhokoliv masa.Stromečky se vždy zdobily ráno 24.12 aby to čekání na večer lépe utíkalo ale zavlečená kultura tento zvyk už téměř zničila.A dárky dětem nosí ježíšek tedy přesněji andělé podle jeho instrukcí a dokud děti věří na ježíška tak jsou to opravdové vánoce jak se dozvědí pravdu je duch vánoc z 80% pryč.Dosud praktikujeme při rozbalovaní dárků že nejmladší člen rodiny si vleze pod stromeček a začne podávat dárek ostatním a to jen jeden a obdarovaný si dárek ohmatá a tipne si co je to za dárek a asi od koho.Po rozbalení si dárek odzkouší nebo vyzkouší a odloží a teprve potom přijde na řadu další dárek pro dalšího člena rodiny. Takto vybalujeme i tři hodiny než je vše vybaleno.

Ale dovolil bych si nesouhlasit se zavlečenou kulturou. Ono to zdobení stromku není úplně původní. A ani "naše" Vánoce nejsou stejné jako byly před sto lety. A upřímně kolik tradic doma děláte? Já si jako malej pamatuju na skořápky se svíčkou v lavoru a nebo vaně, krájení jablka a jednou i lití olova, vlastně i lepení papírového řetězu ( pokud se to dá vzít jako tradice když to děláte pravidelně :) ).
Hlavně Vánoce jsou rodinou záležitostí a pokud se nepodaří předat tradici dál třeba i v modernější formě, není to chyba zavlečené kultury. Dovolil bych si říci, že je to spíše neschopnost předat dál tu tradici.
Perfektně jste to vystihl! Přesně tak jsem byl od dětství zvyklý na naši bohatou tradici.
Ahoj, no opět jsem se bavil, tedy až na toho kapra - kapr mi velmi chutná a to nejen na vánoce, mám rád ryby obecně a tak si klidně nějakého kapra chytnu sám třeba v létě o prázdninách.
Je to asi 5let zpátky kdy jsem si zahrál na skutečného Ježíška, šel jsem po večeři na lodžii a nějaké dítě volalo z okna sousedního baráku "Děkuju ti Ježíšku" no a já se svým pověstným smyslem pro humor okamžitě takovým táhlým jakoby se vzdalujícím hlasem odpověděl "Nemááááš zacóóóó, hlavně buď hodnýýýýýýý" to ditě z toho bylo pěkně vyvalený, protože jsem hned slyšel "Mami, tati slyšeli jste to?" - tak jsem jim alespoň trochu upevnil tradice.
U nás se zdobí stromek až dvacátého čtvrtého a to tak, že se zvolí nějaké téma (každý rok jiné)- například slaměný a každý z rodiny si na stromek pověsí v průběhu dne nějakou oblíbenou ozdobu vyrobenou ze slámy a to se vždy doplní oblíbenými ozdobami těch, kteří už tu s námi nemohou být. No a tak nám na stromečku visí i korálkové ozdoby vyrobené cca v padesátých letech v USA, protože část naší rodiny odtud pochází.

české pohádky, až na malou výjimku, rozhodně nejsou na motivy pohádek bratří Grimmů. Původ u těch několika málo "stejných" klasických pohádek je paralelní, vychází ze stejného základu starších lidových pohádek, případně z pohádek umělých, ale určitě mnohem starších. Grimmové tyto pohádky sbírali v Německu a zpacovali po svém. U nás to šlo jinou cestou.
Některé typy českých pohádkových postav se u Grimmů ani nevyskytují. Naprostá většina českých filmových pohádek má buď originální námět a nebo vychází ze starší evropské či české tradice.
S Grimmy máme společnou Červenou Karkulku, Šípkovou Růženku, Palečka a Popelku. Ale Růženka a Popelka jsou u nás převzaty z o století starší tradice francouzské (Perrault; odkud ostatně čerpali i Grimmové) a Popelka sama má v evropském pojetí původ v Itálii (a princip s malu botou je starověký). A ještě Sněhurka, což je nevysílatelné, bylo zfilomováno v dobách němého filmu.

Vánoční stromeček nemusí být neozdobený týdny, když se přinese až kousek od vánoc. Taky nevím, jak populární je u nás stromečky zdobící Ježíšek. U nás jsme vždycky stromeček zdobily dopoledne na 24.

Jen, the fish you buy in the supermarket is not printed on a 3D printer. Since time immemorial, people have been raising farm animals for meat and then slaughtering those animals for meat. The larger ones were slaughtered by the butcher (now at the slaughterhouse), the smaller ones were slaughtered by people at home, mainly poultry and rabbits. Carp is also a farm animal, fish are kept in ponds. And because people want carp fresh, they kill them and gut them at the point of sale. There's nothing wrong with that, people just forget that. Some would probably starve to death in a desolate place even if there were lots of animals running and swimming around. They would miss the supermarket there and its cooling box.
Hello Jen, thank you for your funny take on the Czech Christmas. :) Regarding the carp, if you ever visit Třeboň in the South Bohemia in the future, you can try their local speciality "kapří hranolky"... which could be translated as carp fries or perhaps fried carp cutlets? You may warm up to the carp then. My mother, who has never cared for the carp on the Christmas Eve, actually enjoyed them as there was way less icky fishbones and fish fat. Anyway, I think that the way the carp is distributed is a callback to how things used to be in the past. I believe it used to be quite normal that customers would check out the animals, choose a particular one, and the seller would slaughter it for them. When I was a child, this process was quite educative for me, because it made me fully realize, where the meat on my plate actually comes from.

Foreign movies are also very popular here on Christmas though. Among others, Die Hard (translated as Smrtonosná past) is my favorite movie. And one of the most traditional movies is Russian tale Mrazík (Frosty) from 1965. And most people prefer to watch their favorite movie during Christmas, at least as long as it's broadcasted.

In our home in Czechoslovakia, ourm parents decorated the Christmas tree the night of December 23rd, later we participated in decorating the tree on Christmas Eve Day, December 24th. It was always Jezisek who brought the gifts while we were washing up after the dinner. Later, it was a sport to sneek in the gifts unde the tree while nobody was watching. A couple of years ago, I was in CR before Christmas, and there was a "robotic" Santa on the town square, writing on a digital pad. A illtle girl with her grandmother stopped in front of Santa, and the little girl was pointing to Santa wirting. Grandma cleverly responded: Santa is a scribe for Jezisek to tell him what to bring to good chidren. That was precious!
We found carp in the U.S. but it was BIG and BAD. Now, we use red snapper. It's great fried with potatoe salad and green peas. For soup, we make Moravian sour kraut, dry mushroom, plums and sour cream soup, better done a day in advance. Recently, we were introduced to movies Andel Pane (Andel of Lord) I and II.

Funny thing, I always carried a fish scale in my wallet, though I never had any money! But! I LOVE our Christmas carp and potato salad. Perhaps it’s the festive dishes and overall atmosphere that makes it look fancy. Plus my mom is an amazing cook, that might help, lol

My Christmas: I come with presents, place them under the tree, eat whole day, watch Die Hard, Pelíšky and then whatever they show from the 30s with Vlasta Burian. We go for gifts, drink gallons of beer and then go to sleep with terrible stomach pains from overeating :-D
Howdy! I'm a 79-year-old Texan who has been in Czechia since it was Czechoslovakia some 30 years ago. Firstly, I love carp but don't like to eat it because of all the tiny bones. Secondly, instead of referring to Czechs as agnostics or atheists, I rather place them in the same category as many of the US Founding Fathers (Benjamin Franklin, the first four US presidents, etc.) were -- Deists. Thomas Jefferson wrote his own bible, on sale at Amazon, - and gave a copy to each member of Congress. I find the beliefs of most Czechs to be very familiar with their beliefs.
Carp is one of the best fish. I love it. It's better to buy a big one or part of big one because small one is tiny meat full of bones.

většinou se kupují stromky těsně před vánoci, takže doma nestraší. Neznám nikoho, kdo by si nechával zdobit stromeček (možná tak firmy nebo starší lidé), to byl vždy úkol tatínka s dětmi ať má maminka klid na vaření. Kapr se jí na vánoce jako postní jídlo. Nemělo by se totiž na vánoce jíst maso (a ryba a jiné vodní potvory se nepovažují za zvířata). Na štědrý den by se nemělo jíst až do večeře vůbec- kvůli půstu a dětem se to vysvětlilo čekáním na zlaté prasátko.
Ježíšek se nemusí nikam vplížit jako zloděj, prostě udělá kouzlo ;-)

And every year for Christmas on the 24th of December, me & my family eat fish with potato salad & crab legs for dinner, then me & my brothers go into my room to wait for the presents, & lastly, when we hear a bell ringing, then that’s when my and my brothers know we can go and open our presents.

Hi, I'm from Slovakia and our table is full of great food, our family doesn't really like carp, so we have homemade trout, salmon or fillet. We eat fish because Christmas Eve is one of the biggest Christian holidays and it is fasting, meaning no meat is eaten. Not because fish is the best our culture has to offer. We have potato salad with the fish. We have cabbage soup before the fish and we start the dinner by eating a wafer with honey, as a symbol of the body of God as in the church. Many families also have other soups such as plum soup or fish soup. The table is full of cakes and fruit. For drinking, we have mulled wine or homemade schnapps with ginger and honey called "zavorovica". Before dinner, the father begins with a prayer and gives thanks for the food, health and the whole year. As for traditions, we can't get up from the table during dinner, we put money under the tablecloth so that it stays there for the next year, we used to put chains on the table to keep the family together. Everything that was produced or grown during the year should be on the table as a sign of thanks. After dinner, we also give food from the table to domestic animals, be it cattle or a dog, a cat, so that they too can be a part of it and partake of the year-round harvest.
As I mentioned, Christmas eve is a day of fasting, so ideally we shouldn't eat anything until dinner.
Each family and region has slightly different traditions, some more, some less, but it is probably the most beautiful year. 💗
