I think it's basically an elementary school curriculum, but I understand that it's a tough nut to crack for you. I believe you can do it.
Question number 8. is misleading.. Charles the IV. was the son of Eliška Přemyslovna and Jan Lucemburský.. So, you could say that he represented both the Přemyslid and Luxemburg dynasties..

@@michalstehnij5073 I'm afraid that maternal lines have been usually much less important than paternal ones in legal sense. Maternal relatives have been usually important as allies, potential enemies or source of legitimacy/wealth.

Ok but what if you wil come dressed in a dirty white tanktop, fanny pack and a mullet haircut (na Jágra) ? My guess would be if you add some řízek and you also have a relative who died or got hurt in High Tatras that must be an instant pass.

Several noble titles appear in the video and they can be quite confusing:
Kněžna: female version of the word kníže, kníže: the highest noble title, often translated into English as prince or duke. (even higher title than knight, above the knížata are only kings and emperors). Before the Czech lands became kingdom, they were called "knížectví", and rulers had the title of knížat and kněžen instead of kings and queens. So do not be surprised that St. Ludmila will sometimes be called kněžna Ludmila, or instead of St. Wenceslas you can find kníže Václav.
Vladyka: one of the highest noble titles, translated into English as lord. (if I'm not mistaken, the title of Vladyka is just below the title of knight)
Interestinc fact: Jan Žižka also came from an aristocratic family (however, the family became poor and before the Hussite wars Žižka had to make a living as a robber baron). His family had the title of zeman. Zeman was the lowest noble title (lower than zeman was only peasant). (the surname of our current president is also most likely based on the title of Zeman)
To the person of Vladislav Jagellonsky:
He was thefirst Czech king from the Jagellonian dynasty, the Jagellonian dynasty originally comes from Poland. Because Vladislav was from poland, he did understood Czech, but not enough, and it is known that If he had been asked a more difficult question or been given problem that he did not understand, he would just answerd yes without thinking about it. Because of this, Vladislav Jagellonsky was sometimes also called King Yes.
(Because of his language barrier he became a puppet for everyone around him)

Ve videu se objevuje několik šlechtických titulů a ty mohou být matoucí:

Jeho rodina měla titul "zemanů". Zeman byl nejnižší šlechtický titul (pod zemanem byl jen poddaný). (Z titulu zeman také z největší pravděpodobností vychází také příjmení našeho současného prezidenta)
K osobě Vladislava Jagellonského:
První český král z rodu Jagellonců, rod Jagellonců pochází původem z Polska. Jako Polák sice česky rozuměl, ale ne dostatečně a je znám tím, že když mu byla položena těžší otázka nebo problém a Vladislav této otázce nerozuměl odpověděl bez rozmyslu ano. Kvůli tomu byl Vladislav Jagellonský někdy také nazýván jako král Ano. (kvůli své jazykové bariéře se stal loutkou všech okolo něho)

That's interesting about Vladislav Jagello, I didn't know that. I always thought Czech and Polish languages were almost same in that time.

I’m really happy seeing how well you know our history. Just one error during the whole test... Even though you said occasionally it was just a guess, it was still pretty good performance. By the way, every single Czech king, with the sole exception of Jiří of Poděbrady, was somehow blood-related to the first Czech, Přemyslid, dynasty. And queen Elisabeth II, current British queen, is thirty something times great-granddaughter of the very first Czech king Vratislav II. Which means if we ever turn to monarchy again, British family would have a claim on the Czech throne 😄
Having passed the US citizenship test, I can say that it is pretty similar. I took the test in Texas and I saw an old Hispanic lady answering all questions with "George Washington!" So as long as the question she picked from the hat was who our first president was, or the first commander in chief, or who led the Continental Army, or, and this is a stretch, which of our founding fathers had the largest calves, she got it licked! In the Czech test, you can bet the ranch that anyone named Jagelonsky is the wrong answer.

@@DreamPrague Just look out for "Bitva u Moháče" (Battle of Mohács, 1526). That might be the single question where you need Ludvík Jagellonský (son of Vladislav) - he died there without an heir and that's how we got to the Habsburgs.

I am not sure I could pass a Czech Citizenship test and I am Czech. One of my Vietnamese friends did it and she lived here from a very young age and still had to prepare a lot. It is doable with preparation;)

Nice video and really good results. I saw whole these questions years ago and I must say I quite like them - they are quite covering general knowledge about Czech history, geography, etc. But yes - I assume they could be quite hard for foreigners.

Přemyslid (Přemyslovci) seems to be only English word containing "ř".
To záleží na způsobu přepisu. V době, kdy se u nás jako úřední a literární jazyk používala němčina nebo latina, se občas dá setkat i s použitím české diakritiky v těchto jazycích. Třeba v názvu knihy "Protheus felicitatis et miseriae Čechicae". Ale dneska když správný Čech chce vypadat světácky, tak oseká háčky a čárky i z vlastních jmen.

As I will one day be applying for Czech citizenship myself, I find this series to be quite compelling. I can't wait for more! I passed US citizenship and I would still pass Czech one too...even though there were changes in these last 15 years. Great job Jen...I was surprised you were little hesitating with University because you live in Prague so Charles University should be always asap on your mind...:) Can't wait for next round...

You guys are really good! When Honza said St. Ludmila was St. Wenceslav's grandmother, I was really impressed, not even many Czechs remember! Little correcting with Mr. Jan Hus :D It's actually more like Master Jan Hus as in he had master degree in theology on Charles University. Anyway, good job, guys! The Names of the Rulers are read as ordinal numerals in Czech - Karel the IV. (Karel čtvrtý)

Ráda bych zmínila, že to "čeština je jeden z nejtěžších jazyků" je jen mýtus. Obecně se těžko měří, co je "těžké". Každému přijde těžké něco jiného. Je fakt, že španělština se bude asi většině lidí učit snáz než čínština a to naše nekonečné měnění koncovek slov je pěkná chuťovka. Ale není žádný systém, jak změřit, co je těžké a co ne. Je to velmi individuální, pro Slovany je čeština určitě mnohem jednodušší než pro Anglosasy.

@@makinka0cp No, ve skutečnosti to mýtus není, a měří se to navíc docela snadno, a sice dle času, jehož je v průměru třeba ke zvládnutí určité dorozumívací úrovně v daném jazyce. Pochopitelně se to vztahuje k tomu, kdo se ten jazyk učí: čeština bude jinak obtížná pro Poláka, jinak pro Němce či Angličana, a ještě jinak pro Korejce či Japonce. A jelikož Amerika je dnes de facto pupkem světa, vztahují se podobné výroky většinou k Američanům. A pro ně - a obecně pro anglicky mluvící - vskutku platí, že čeština je jedním z nejtěžších jazyků. You did great! This will be a fun series. The one you had wrong was just a bit of inattention, you obviously knew the matter. A few of them seemed like more or less educated guesses :)
The way I lke learning about these random facts is the so-called "Wiki walk". It can be done with Wikipedia or any other web or application that allows quickly following up on associated topics from the article. You start with one topic, let's say *Vladislav Jagellonský* (Vladislaus II of Hungary), zou can simply read about his predecessor *Jiří z Poděbrad* (George of Poděbrady, very famous in Czechia) or his successor *Ludvík Jagellonský* (Louis II of Hungary). But you can also go more esoteric and read that Vladislav was required to follow the *Compacts of Basel* (Basilejská kompaktáta) and learn that they gave assurances and relligious freedoms to the *Hussites.* From there you can learn how the *Hussite Wars* ended and how all that fits in with those kings... It can be a never-ending journey.
If you do use Wikipedia, I suggest looking at both the English and Czech article on the topic, or at the very least find the Czech names of what you're looking at.

I can recommend you a book called "Obrázky z českých dějin a pověstí". It's mainly for children, so the language is very easy. As the name says, it's mainly pictures, because the stories in the book are mostly in the form of short comics. You can learn a lot about Czech legends and history from it and from what I remeber, all answers to the questions in the video can be found there. It used to be one of my favourite books when I was a child.
I know it, because it´s corona time, so I refresh my knowledges with my child, who is studing "home school" now 😂😂😂 You were excellent and so nice ...

Vladyka is from "Vlad" (like Vlad Dracula - means a chieftan, derived from word Vláda - a government), just train your Czech 1 hour a day, each day and you will make a perfect Czech in 1 year even without a paper saying it

Great effort, great video, I really appreciate your wisdom. Quite a hard test, if this knowledge is really mandatory for the citizenship. Get a mandatory-literature book for elementary school - "Staré pověsti české" - if you would like to know more about Libuše and stuff. (we anyway do not know more than what is written there).

I think you guys did great! I am pretty sure half of the Czechs (including myself) would not get 9 out of 10 answers correctly. I would almost certainly fail on the two questions with Luxemburgs. I am pretty sure that passing the citizenship test will be a piece of cake for you :)

Karel IV. he had father was Jan Luxemburg and mother was Eliška Přemyslovna
His father is known as John of Bohemia or John the Blind. Jan Luxemburg isn't truly correct because we use Jan Lucemburský sometimes only here in the Czech Republic instead of his ”real“ name Jan slepý or Jan český by which he is famous around the whole World.

@@petrnovak5304 Pak ale vyvstává otázka: v čem je znalost historie důležitější, než znalost přírodních věd? Často mi to přijde, že se očekává znalost české historie, kultury, literatury, geografie, apod, ale to, že lidé neví nic o fyzice, matematice, chemii, biologii je úplně normální. Základy fyziky považuji za ty nejzákladnější znalosti, protože je to nauka o elementárních principech přírody. Historici se mnohdy dmou pýchou nad svou vzdělaností, pak ale nejsou schopni vysvětlit funkci motoru a převodovky, princip evoluce, nebo proč svítí slunce.
@@adamprasek9640 Jo v tomhle se určitě nehádám, netvrdím, že je důležitější. Fyzika je základ, mě třeba překvapuje, že spousta lidí, bez ohledu na vzdělání (znám třeba strojaře s VŠ), nejsou schopní popsat ani elektrické napětí a proud. Látka tak osmý třídy a myslím si, že popsat jednoduchý elektrický obvod, nebo třeba praktičtější znalosti z chemie atp. jsou důležité i pro samotnou existenci. Proti tomu je historie jen jakási nadstavba, ale určitě bych ji nedegradoval jen na nějakou rádoby kratochvíli "intelektuálů".

I remember taking the test for US citizenship. I thought it would be difficult, but it wasn't. It was an oral test where I answered a few questions. So I was disappointed, I had been honestly learning for months, and now all of a sudden, about ten questions randomly selected by computer? I wanted to ask: and you don't have more questions there? I had to say to myself: shut up and get out. It's gone, you have American citizenship.
Hi Jen, God.... those questions were tough. When you read II or IV it is always read like 1st, 2nd, 3rd in english. Like Charles the fourth in CZ it would be CTVRTY, DRUHY, PRVNI
