ok, so the diference between "dva" and "dvě:"
"Dva" is used if the thing you're counting is grammatically masculine, exp.: dva pánové, dva hrady, dva muži, dva stroje, dva předsedové, dva soudci.
"Dvě" is used if the thing your're counting is grammatically feminine or neutral, exp: dvě ženy, dvě růže, dvě písně, dvě kosti, dvě města, dvě moře, dvě kuře, dvě stavení.
You refered to "the bill" truh is you can find both on czech bill. There is "DVĚ STĚ" on 200 bill because hundred (sto) is grammatically neutral and "DVA TISÍCE" on 2000 bill because thousand (tisíc) is grammatically masculine. Oddly enough, there is a woman on 2000 czech bill.

Nah, that is the International Criminal Court (ICC). Before it was established, if the international community wanted to punish war crimes, the states had to create specialised tribunals, like the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Funny thing, I think that USA, China and Russia still ignore the ICC, while the rest of the world mostly acknowledges its authority.

The INTERNATIONAL Court of JUSTICE is in Hague, the EUROPEAN court for HUMAN RIGHTS in Strasbourg. Also, the EU doesnt have an army at all (although it has been discussed not too long ago), every member state takes care of their defence by themselves. If you are a member of NATO however, thats where the collective defence comes from.

Just for your information, you need to carry an identification document with you all the time even in Czechia. It can be ID or passport ( driving license might do as well I guess). They would not check it on border of Schengen area but in case you are stopped by police and there is need to identify yourself, if you don't have it you might end up on police station until your identity is confirmed. It is not happening often, but it might happen :)

    • @rehurekj
      @rehurekj Před 2 lety

    Hi Jennifer,
    Sir_Mac here, as always!
By the way - beer called "ležák" (lager) is named that because for some time, "leží" (lies) in the barrel (sud).
Those general words are tricky in both languages... Sovislost is sometimes kontext, vztah, vazba... And definitely it is synonymum of spojitost...
souvislost = context (kontext), relation (vztah, vazba), connection (spojitost)
Jennifer, what does it mean, I don't know if it is an idiom, or what, but ...
"I will take what I can get"??? Something like "I have to work with what I have been given"??? In czech "Musím pracovat s tím, co mám" ???
I thought your John / Honza is rather behind you in the terms of the czech language, but I think you form a complementary couple. You are both strong in czech in differet areas, so you complement each other. I like Honza, he is very smart guy. He knows many things that native Czech doesn't! :)
Jennifer, don't be sad... When I hear "Evropská rada" a "Rada Evropy" which isn't the same thing, it makes me scream loudly, because if you have so many representative and administrative units, every one of them should have special and distinguishable name...

It started easy, but I failed the question no. 4. I also guessed Hague :-D And I failed the question no.8 as well :-D
As for question 9... You said the correct answer before I even saw the options :-D I would be just guessing. I would probably hit the correct answer, but it would be just a happy acident to be honest :-D
So I would have 80% with good luck... with bad luck it would be 70% That doesn't look good, does it :-D

Hi Jen, the Old Quibbler at sou service! ;) Gender of numerals of mathematical series (tens, hundreds, thousands...) goes as the gender of the series - or any other the things - which the numeral marks - in this case it is word "tisíc" which is masculin (in declension goes as "stroj") thus numeral two must take masculin form "dva". Form "dvě" is used for feminin or neutrum gender.
Besides - do not be afraid to butcher Czech language - as a foreigner (and a woman - gender stereotype advantage - you see?!) you will always go off easy... ;)

Requiring an invitation to travel abroad is not as absurd as it sounds, it used to be common here before 1989. If you traveled to a different country to visit a personal friend or relative, you first needed a written invitation from them (not sure if it was a form or just a freeform letter). Based on that you would (or wouldn't) obtain a permission to leave the country and to exchange some amount of money (since the koruna was not convertible outside of Czechoslovakia). And only after that would you start the visa process with the foreign embassy.

@@simsfilms3 "dva tisíce čtyři" is grammatically perfectly correct, because it is used as the name of the year, not as serial number. Also, if you wanted to use a serial number, "dvou tisícerý čtvrtý" is not correct in this case, you would have to use "dvou tisícerém čtvrtém", or something like that, which would have been used probably during the era of the Austria-Hungary empire, not really in today's world. 😂

@@simsfilms3 not tísícerý, which is technically right too, but dvou tísící čtvrtý rok, most often rok dva-tisíce-čtyři. You split the number in half, like the english doo, but use dual for two thousand numbers, not ordinary or ordinal number. For other years - for example English 1984 is nineteen-eighty-four. Czechs would say devatenáct-set-osmdesát-čtyři most often, or tisíc-devět-set-osmdesát-čtyři.
For declination of months you almost always use -ý since all months with exception of september (to září) are masculine grammer kin nouns, while september is neutral kin. Practical example: 11.9. - jedenácté září, 11.12. - jedenáctý prosinec

Its not so easy to have an enterprise in a different EU country. You need usually to open a bank account in that country that is pretty hard task to complete, especially for citizen from former eastern countries in western banks, you really have to fight against the mix of strict banking rules applicable in EU and local xenofobia, especially in Luxembourg !!!

The last question was not really about Schengen - thats border control free thing. As EU citizens you can travel all around all EU members without password, just with your EU ID Card - Občanský průkaz/občanským průkazem.Tricky think is that those two thinks overlap, as all Schenngen members agrees to recognize other members IDs as well, without it, you will need passport in Norway and Swiss(not EU), but no bother control (Schengen). Plus CR have bunch of other countries whom recognizes our IDs outside EU and Schengen (like Croatia before entering EU).

Question no. 6 is such a weird and irrelevant question. The Schengen area has nothing to do with travel documents. That requirement is actually determined by the the other countries' membership in the EU, EEA, or by bilateral treaties (Switzerland, UK) or unilateral measures (ie. Georgia). As to whether people use their IDs - yes, many don't even have passports.
