  • What is there to do when your door handle breaks? Tear the door panel off and replace it of course!
    Link to video transcription: www.roosterlifetv.com/youtube...
    The Sport Trac has plastic handles that open the door. Some engineer somewhere decided this was a smart idea. While the factory handles can last if properly taken care of, any aftermarket replacement handle just does not hold up. That is why they are cheap to purchase. If you know your way around a wrench this job is a piece of cake. Although a heated shop would be nice in the winter.
    This process should apply to all 2001 - 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Tracs. It may also apply to Explorers and Rangers of the same era.

    Seriously, we had a horrible situation come up with an Explorer as my step father needed a favor for a friend of his, locked the keys in the car, then the handle broke... and he was pissy about it (wish I could shove that all plastic handle up his nasal passages)... Overly detailed moment short... you saved my butt. Thank you for your time! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    I attempted this repair on a 2005 driver door but had to abort. The plastic clasp on the threaded rod seemed quite different than in this video. I could not flip it open, and repeatedly bent my 90deg pick trying.
    Revisiting this video, I now realize it's showing a rear door. The front door is much more crowded, and you can't see anything you're working on.
    I took a photo of the mysterious clasp with my phone - reviewing it now, and comparing it to this video, I think the clasp may actually be the same but upside-down (reversing the orientation), and positioned such that the clasp opening is against (and inset into flanges?) a hard metal piece - I can't remember exactly what, and the door is already put back together, but perhaps it was the window channel. I'm not sure how to get the clasp open with no room to insert the pick. Any ideas?

    • @SoloRoosterGarage
      @SoloRoosterGarage  Před 2 lety

      You may have to pull on the rod while reaching a pick to open the clasp. I used a pick designed for coolant hoses (thicker material for the pick).

    • @madbeggar
      @madbeggar Před 2 lety

      @@SoloRoosterGarage Yeah, in my case I was picking the wrong side (the rounded hinge side) because the clasp is oriented 180deg to the one shown in this video. I wish I could post the photo I took, because it's maddening!

    • @SoloRoosterGarage
      @SoloRoosterGarage  Před 2 lety

      I apologize for not seeing your comment sooner! I believe these door handles have such a poor build quality that the plastic material can't hold up to the repeated stress of motion, especially in the cold. They pump them out of a factory somewhere for pennies. I'm working toward a better solution for this.

      @@SoloRoosterGarage I just replaced my driver's side handle for the third time and was finally able to find the metal Ford Mercury handles on 1AAuto. The part number is 1ADHS01625. The handle and throw arms are all solid metal. The only plastic part is the plate that screws into the door. They have the exact same form factor as the other handles I have replaced in the past. This handle is also used on Explorers and Rangers, so parts are aplenty. I've tried multiple brands, all have been similar quality with none being great. I've had to replace these handles multiple times. You may be able to get a OEM quality part from a dealership, but price will be high.

      Just use anything that has a 90° bend that is small, and you get good leverage pulling. You could bend a 16 penny nail, get behind the yellow latch, then use pliers to pull. I used my phone camera to get a good look at the clip.
