You do not have to remove the screw completely. Just loosen it a few turns and the keyhole bezel will come out. Eliminate the chance of dropping it into the door.
I’m a 59 yr old with the same issue..I bought the handle and REALLY appreciate the tutorial! I can’t stand paying someone to do something I could easily do myself!
I bought the OEM part and only backed out the screw a few turns and the little piece slid right out! Old door handle removed easy like u said and the OEM part slid right in no problems! Thanks
Hey James. I've used your video twice now. Once for the front passenger side of my 2007 Ford Edge SEL and now my driver side door with the keyhole. Worked perfectly both times. I simply loosened the screw (did not remove it) and used a shoestring as suggested from one of the comments below, to pull the latch toward me so the aftermarket part would fit. Done in 5 minutes LOL. I laugh because I was at a Ford dealership having my oil changed and asked if they could pop this on for me. The service manager asked two different mechanics and they told him the whole panel would have to come off. I explained how to do it and he told me the driver's door was much more complicated. They wanted to charge me $79.99 plus tax to fix it!!
That is awesome! I am glad to see you could save money and do this yourself. I am also happy another viewer could find a nice shortcut to help do it better.
THANK YOU!!! I have a Lincoln MKX and I followed your directions and replaced it with FORD factory parts (I followed your advice and did not go with an aftermarket piece). The cost for my new handle was approximately $50. I read the comments here and only loosened the torx to get the old lock cover off and put the new one in place. I don't know how much money I saved by doing it myself, but THANK YOU!!
I have a 2010 MKX as well. My rear passenger side broke as well but it was the little plastic piece where the screw puts pressure on the part. What site did you get the OEM parts from?
I bought 1 on amazon, installed on 5/19/19 so far so good!!! Just two tips 1. You do not have to take the torx screw all the way out as it only keeps pressure on that piece!! Just back out a few turns and the piece will pull out. 2. I looped fishing line around the little latch piece, (you were having trouble getting behind through the big hole)inside the door next to the lock and pulled down to get the big handle piece behind that lever, that’s the part that unlatches the door, once the handle piece was behind I pulled the fishing line out and it was behind it!!! And finished as you said, however all this without taking the inside panel off! Took about 20 minutes. Took more time to get the tools together 😀 Thanx so much for this video we all need to help each other even if it’s through one mans trial an error!!! Thanks
I used 20 gauge (might be 22) insulated telephone wire and it worked pretty good. Fishing line would probably worked better, but I didn't have any...one part of your tip wasn't clear to me: how did you get the line out after engaging the two latches? Then it dawned on me why the fishing line was a better idea. It would come out easier. Anyway, thanks. That was very helpful!
Thank you so much. I was able to reattach my daughters handle after it fell off. Once I was able to get the right size tools, took less than 2 minutes and huge savings!!! Thanks again!
So I watched this video (I'm not a car guy) built up a little courage. I needed the drivers side door handle with the lock. I bought the OEM for 65.00. Got the part, went to Harbor Freight got a 6.00 magnetic screwdriver and a 9.00 bit set. My torx was a T20 not a T27. Got home, 5 min later I was done. Thanks for the video. I did not want to take that panel off. He is spot on with this video.
Mine was the drivers door and the bezel that fit over the key hole broke which made my handle come off in my hand. Thanks for showing how the handle goes on.
+Ray Moore You're welcome. In my opinion this is a poor design. I have 4 kids and they have all come off. I did not mention this in the video but I have glued them and that is only a short term fix.
On my flex, I got it on first try and took it off (stupid me), after that it wouldn’t grab the latch. I stuck my finger inside and mine doesn’t have anything blocking my from toggling it with my finger, so I took a piece of string and stuck it into my fingernail with the ends running towards me and hooked the latch inside the door. Then I was able to pull on it while inserting the new handle. This way, I didn’t have to take my whole inside door panel off. Now I just have to find the little screw that I lost lmao. 😅
I found that, if you use a piece of string or something like that, you can loop the catch that the door handle attaches to from the outside so that you don't have to take the door panel off. Then, once attached, you can just pull the string back out.
After NOT finding specifically what I needed (replace the broken door cylinder lock cover) I deciphered this video to get the solution. To help anyone else needing what I did, the method is as follows: Pull the round rubber plug where the Torx screw access is. I used a 25 Torx head, and ONLY LOOSENED the screw at the same time I attempted to remove the remaining broken piece that clipped the cover on. DO NOT remove the screw, instead loosen it and wiggle the plastic piece out. Put the new cover in, tighten the Torx screw back up, put the plug back in, and YOU'RE DONE!
Nice video, i thought the interior panel needed to come off. also i found the screw only needed to be backed off some rather than completely removed, makes the install less spooky
Nice tutorial. I own an edge but hope I don't have to go through the trouble of installing a new door handle. If I do i know where to look and what to do.
My doorhandle broke and the hole in the bottom of the door is large enough to lose the screw. What kind of screw would I look for to replace the one lost fir this project?
Thanks so much, but unfortunately the AM handle set that I bought do not sit flush, nor slide back to the right position, additionally the latch hook at the front is too wide to set in the black plastic housing, just spent 2 hours trying and I used to work in a body shop as a repair man and then manager, also worked for and Ins. company as a damage appraiser for many year, so pretty familiar with repairs. Thanks again for posting this video, saved me from taking off the door trim, now I have to try to find O.E.M. Anybody out there use a good A.M. one that actually fits?
Anyone know the part number for the screw. Mine dropped even though I used a magnetic screwdriver. Would like to replace it instead of removing panel to find it?
Thanks, need to fix my Lincoln MKX rear door latch. Have magnetic driver but will try the torx screw loose instead of removed, if I can, that is where the break occurred, right at the screw.
@@MrEggs4breakfast yes it's easy to do. Take a good look inside to make sure you are aligned to correct location and latch when reinstalling the door handle.
Any idea if this works on a 2012 Ford Fusion? Broke my door handle today by accident and now the door will not open from inside or outside. Worst part? It’s the front driver side door.
I am not sure. You could do a search for the party number you need and see if it also mentions other compatible cars. I will start with a search on eBay.
OEM handles have gasket (one on each end of handle itself, rear one extends to the retainer part) that add shim to it. w/o then handle and clip sit too deep into door and causes binding
disregard forgot the flex was different that edge/escape oem and aftermarket usually include basket, perhaps aftermarket thinner than oem would cause issue you had
You do not have to remove the screw completely. Just loosen it a few turns and the keyhole bezel will come out. Eliminate the chance of dropping it into the door.
Thanks for that tip. I’m changing my Lincoln MKZ soon and it looks similar to this.

this helped me a lot ,i had the same problem when installing my handle, Thanks so much.

This a great DIY How To video! Clear, concise, and I appreciate your time in making sure we can see all the details. Thank you Sir!
Thank You! I love that you show your errors too. This is real stuff!
Glad you made this video after my door handle broke on my Taurus I didn’t know what to do

What size allen key did you use?
It’s a torx. T25

Thanks! I was hoping others could learn from my misfortune. Originally I thought the whole door panel had to be removed. I am glad this helped you.
Great video. Also I noticed the replacement door handle felt better than the original.
Worked like a charm on my 2013 Explorer. Only had to back out the screw without removing. Thanks very much!
BTW, the biggest problem I had was figuring out what size screw bit to use, its a T 25
I made sure not to drop the screw, had to modify the replacement part I ordered for my 2009 Lincoln MKX, but it worked. Thanks for the video.
Great to hear, you're welcome!
I have the same car. Did everything work out ok?

Best DIY video I've see!
Thank You for posting.. I’m attempting this today
+chris russell You're welcome. Good luck it should be easy. 👍
Used this for a 2013 explorer as well, it was a t25 for the first screw

Wow nice! Great idea thanks for sharing that.
Worked like a charm! Thank you Anthony!!
Very, Very Helpful! Thank You Jim.
Thanks man ! This helped a lot
Thanks bro, fixed bosses flex

Thanks for the tip on the screw! I appreciate the information.
Thanks for the easy fix.
Good clear video thanks.

Nice tutorial. I own an edge but hope I don't have to go through the trouble of installing a new door handle. If I do i know where to look and what to do.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback
Huge help thank you thank you
Can you make a new version with the aftermarket handle and the string method everyone is talking about because I'm confused
Gracias bro
My doorhandle broke and the hole in the bottom of the door is large enough to lose the screw. What kind of screw would I look for to replace the one lost fir this project?
I am not sure the screw size but it fits T25 according to the comments here. I'm sorry. If you find out maybe you can come back and tell us.

Not sure if it still works but I have a link to the one I bought in the description. It was not OEM but it worked good.
Great video. Thumbs up!!
+Ray Moore Thanks!

Mine recently broke on my MKX as well. Did everything go ok?

JML thanks!
Cool video. I just wish you would have put them side by side for a more in depth comparison.
+beatstrangler Thanks, are you talking about the eBay purchased handle verses the factory handle?
I don't think you have to unscrew all the ways
Good job
Thanks!
Thanks man !
+NATE DOGG You're welcome!
How can I find the screw that you take off first
I have your kind of luck with projects. If something goes 1,2,3 you can bet there will be some hooting going on! Lol

What size torx screw driver is needed?
+Misty Rosado Torx/Star drive size T27
Don't drop the screw...got it.. lol. Gawd that's my life
Will this also work for Ford Explorer?
Sorry i am not sure.
Can you recall what size torx was used for the first, upper torx screw?
Hello, I'm sorry I don't know the size. You can probably do a Google search to find it or call the dealership and ask them.
How To With James thank you. Worth a shot. I just purchased t5-50 torx off amazon. That should cover it! Thanks for the video.
You're welcome. Good luck!
Same thing on a Toyota aftermarket are crap and don’t last too long.
It’s the same for the Taurus
Was it?
you need the gaskets in place to make it fit
I am not sure what gasket you are talking about?
OEM handles have gasket (one on each end of handle itself, rear one extends to the retainer part) that add shim to it. w/o then handle and clip sit too deep into door and causes binding
disregard forgot the flex was different that edge/escape oem and aftermarket usually include basket, perhaps aftermarket thinner than oem would cause issue you had
Ok I see. I was wondering how I would have missed this. Thanks for the information on this.
Is this the same process for the driver door?
Yes it is.
@@HowToWithJames thanks ❤️
Ur not supposed to unscrew it all the way just till the front piece comes out
If you have the ability go to a self pull junk yard, i got an OEM part for $7. $3 can of spray paint.
Nice tip! Thanks!
