My GM ran a 40k tabletop game where we played the acolytes of a fairly Purtian Inquisitior. The campaign had us chasing an individual who set up multiple Chaos cults across a sector. Turns out after a long campaign we track the heretic down...only to discover it's a Radical Inquisitior that was setting up Chaos cults to study them in order to discover how similar worship of the Emperor could be weaponized to make the Emperor into a Chaos god of Order for the Empire. The final mission had us fighting his willingly demon possessed Imperial Guardsmen flunkies whose faith in the Emperor gave them temporary control of the demon's power, all trying to kill us for being the heretics in their eyes. Gotta say, the GM really nailed the feel of the Inquisition and how batshit crazy they are.

Fun fact, real inquisitors used less torture than local lords and use of torture was heavily regulated. It was also used in a way that might be counterintuitive for us. It was used After the main interrogation, only to confirm if there was any doubts. It was often stopped fast or not used at all, if the Inquisitor had no doubts about truthfulnes of the prisoner. Spanish Inquisition left detailed and massive archive so we know a lot about it. There was also no need for fancy tools, as good old joint ripping strapado required only a piece of rope, and some place above the head to tie it. It's a universal method, currently very popular in [REDACTED] country in it's minority camps.

They also weren't particularily prone to sentencing people to death, unless they were literal, repeat-offending, unrepentent heretics.
I read once that an analysis of church records showed only about a 2% rate of capital punishment for inquisitorial investigations.
People were indeed often found innocent and even when they were found guilty, they'd often receive only a stern talking to and a proverbial slap on the wrist, the general assumption being that the common layman lacked the kind of training to recognize and debunk heretical teachings and therefore couldn't be blamed for being deceived.

Genuinely cool idea: an order of suicidal inquisitors/ones deemed heretical by the other orders who work with the warp who are sent to doomed planets overran by orcs, tyrannids, etc, and have them open portals to unleash chaos armies. Reason why this order would exist in lore: instead of wasting (non)valuable guardsmen and (actually)valuable resources trying to retake a planet, you send these guys down there, have them open a few portals, and have all the enemies of the imperium duke it out with each other, weakening the hold on the planet. Once the fighting is done and the enemy is undoubtably weakened and tired, send the armies of terra to wipe out whoever is left and successfully reclaim the planet in the name of the god emperor. After all, if you’re gonna be a heretic slated to die might as well die helping the emperium right?

That is the worst idea chaos incursions are hardest to remove from a planet not because they are hard to kill but because they can corrupt the soul of places and things which is much harder to fix then even tyranid infestation after all tyranids cant turn rocks into recruiting tools. Even worse if chaos gets a skilled/crazy enough sorcerer they can make a planet a demon world and immune to orbital bonbardmant

My favourite ordo of the Inquisition was an obscure branch of essentially holistic detectives. Who ignored any idea of conventional investigations and just did what they thought the universe wanted. Despite the ordo being practically irrelevant and seen as a waste of resources, they somehow have one of the highest success rates.

Context: the word ‘puritan’ in the real world never meant conservative or even orthodox (with respect to Protestantism). not saying that pancreas stated this or implied it, just pointing out a somewhat common source of confusion.
The puritans, loosely, were the protestants of England who felt the Anglican Church wasn’t _radical ENOUGH_ in its reform. Indeed to this day Anglicanism is characterized as a reformation movement closer to Catholicism than Protestantism.
We can thank the puritans for the eager early settlement of the Americas because their persecution and tension with the Church of England made the prospect of a new settlement where they could practice in peace very appealing.
For better or worse, the character of Christianity in the western settlements like the Boer republics and Australia was primarily shaped by the Protestant majority which sought these posts.

the latest Eisenhorn book, the one from a few years ago, Magos, touches on how inquistors intentionally recruit incompetent/chaos touched people into the inquisition because the older inquistors who take on apprentices are often the ones who have started to 'push the boundaries' and either want more people who think like them in the ordo, or want stupid people in the ordo because they plan to go rogue. It then becomes a sort of self fulfilling prophecy.

  • @Bluehairedgirl89

Thank you for all the work you put into this video and getting it posted up, it’s great and I really enjoyed this one.
So I learned about got interested in 40k mostly for the novels, my favorites were always the ones like the Eisenhorn series, the Ravenor series, and the Calpurnia series. I loved the stories that focused on life in the Imperium and investigating threats and crimes within it. After all you can only read so many books about giant epic battles before they all start blurring together. And I went nuts for the Dark Heresy game books.
So yeah when I finally started looking into 40k tabletop I wanted to form a Inquisition Army only to find out exactly how hard it was to get models for them and they hadn’t printed a new codex for them in like two or three editions. It played a big part in me bouncing off the hobby hard, although there were other reasons. I ended up getting way more into Battletech in the end.
Now though with the return of the Old World, whose lore I love, and with some of the Inquisition related armies getting some love along with just having more time and money. I’m genuinely thinking of forming an Inquisition Kill Team and maybe going from there. We’ll have to see! It would be awesome to play my Oc Inquisitor from Dark Heresy on the table.
This video just got me even more fired up for that! So thanks again!
