You DID forget three things. First, the way the Imperium keeps its sanctioned psykers - including Astropaths - safe: and that's soul-binding them to the Emperor himself. Their souls are permanently linked to the Master of Mankind in a ritual which sees their very minds reshaped, enhancing their powers and giving them a better (but still not perfect) degree of control over them, at the cost of more often than not burning out one or more of your other, physical senses, like sight or smell. Second, if you're young enough, you could become a Space Marine aspirant. Some chapters, like the Blood Ravens, go out of their way to recruit children with psychic potential. Granted, you need to survive the absolutely horrific trials aspirants are subjected to, as well as gene seed implantation, AND then the even more horrific training Librarian aspirants undergo. But, if you succeed, Space Marine librarians are both some of the strongest, and some of the best trained and safest/most stable psykers in the whole of the Imperium. You just need to survive the battles you will inevitably face, and ultimately you will one day die in battle. Third, is to join the Inquisition. Inquisitors are always in need of people with psykic talent, sanctioned or not. As a member of an Inquisitorial retinue, or even as a full-fledged Inquisitor as is the case of Eisenhorn and Ravenor, you have access to all kinds of mystic knowledge, training, and archeotech which could be used to enhance and/or control your abilities. Of course, you'll be in constant danger from the enemies of Mankind, from rival Inquisitors, and even from your own companions, because some Inquisitors are known to dabble in the demonic, including the creation of Daemonhosts.

I know the Admech don't like psykers, but I feel like there is some potential for messing around with psykers and machines. There's also the drukhari psy-stifler. It'll keep you sane and suppress you psyker powers, but it will also slowly drain away your mind until you become the equivalent of a flesh-servitor.

At least in one of the dawn of fire books we get the perspective of a psycher on one of these ships and it's quite horrific. Aside from the presence of blanks beeing painful to him, he is crammed in a room full of hundreds of other people, chained to the floor, dirty and malnourished for weeks. They are essentially left in their own excrement and exposed to loud noises to keep them from focusing their minds/uding their powers. Several people die on the journey and are just left to rot in the same room. That might just have been the case due to the influx of psychers after the opening of the great rift and all the issues that follow from there tho

I like using "hypnoconditioned" as a phrase because it really buries the truth of what happens to space marines into some cool gothic sci-fi term alongside "Genehanced". Xenos heresy incoming, but what about the Tau? While their knowledge of the Warp may be negligible, their technology is rapidly advancing, and in many ways even surpasses certain things the Imperium has access to, and offering to basically be a lab rat for study at least has the potential to lead to some positive discoveries, right? And you don't even have to work very hard to get them to wanna negotiate with you, the Tau are practically frothing at the bit to let as many people into their collective as possible. And if nothing else, being surrounded by so many dim souls that the Warp really doesn't care about can't HURT, right? Sure, it's a long shot, but no less of a long shot than "Finding a Nekron Tomb King who won't kill you on the spot."

In "The rise of the Primarch" segments of the webway have already fallen to chaos, and the thousand sons and warp monsters haunt the webway too. Plus navigating the webway without the elder is pretty much impossible for normal plebs.
