I was in Ciudad Real a few years ago, and the two things I liked the most were, first, the extremely friendly people, and second, the absolute lack of tourists!
I have been around some countries in Europe, and I have to say, that from what I have seen, nothing compares to Spain. The people, the food, the history, the incredible natural beauty and varied topography, architecture. The different cultures, languages, music, etc. All in one country.
Christian 74 Actually, I have been to Italy...and it is great....but Spain, it’s a lot better, not only the beauty and history.....but also the food is a lot better in Span, more variety. Also, the people in Spain are happier and friendlier and more helpful....I also noticed that the roads in Spain and the infrastructure is better. Spain is cleaner and more organized. I had bad experiences in Italy at hospitals and the airport.
I am spaniard and i can say Italy has stunning monuments, history and food. Not to mention that spain is highly influenced by italy for obvious reasons.
I spent last university year in Ciudad Real as an Erasmus student and despite the fact the city is not too picturesque, its alive and kicking from a student's point of view. It all kicks off on Thursday with thousands of students flooding a parking lot with their drinks and then making their way to the local nightclubs. Yes, we would get a bit bored from time to time, especially that a train to Madrid at 23 euros one way is quite a bit for a student, but the atmosphere was amazing, people very friendly and worth to mention that everything within walking distance makes life very comfortable. The city is very cheap, it is also very Spanish for a less globalised experience and socially amazing - you get onto the street and you meet a friend within 3 minutes. I miss it so much. Great video as well, thanks for giving me that "someone's slicing onion" feeling about the place I have taken to so much.

Despite being a fanatic for everything Spanish I have never made it to Ciudad Real. But then I don't live two hours away by car. I have visited several places nearby though. Around the city there are loads of interesting sights like las Lagunas de Ruidera, located 132 kms. to the east, Almagro with its spectacular Plaza Mayor, located 27 kms. southeast of the city, and finally Calzada de Calatrava with the majestic castle of Calatrava, located 42 kms. south. An interesting trip is to come from Mérida in Estremadura crossing the immense region of dams and reservoirs passing through Almadén (mercury mines) and the industrial center of Puertollano. You cross one of the most isolated areas of Spain, called la Siberia.

I agree with you it is not one of the most beautiful cities in Spain (there used to be quite a few palatial houses that went ruined and never furbished up) but surrounding countryplaces and nearby villages are beautiful for a quick visit. I moved to Ciudad Real from Madrid and lived there for three years. I can confirm that my quality of life was excellent all along that time. I finally returned to Madrid six years ago and still miss the city and its people. The video is accurate and I would like to underlie how friendly the locals are: it was very easy to fit such a comfortable way of living. I strongly recommend Ciudad Real to reside, not necessarily to visit if you have limited time to spend in Spain (only a few things of remarkable interest for tourism, much less than other Spanish places around). Congrats for this video.
I live in Toledo since 1992 but for two years between 2008 and 2010 I was living there in Ciudad Real during the weekdays (the weekends I returned to Toledo and come back to CR on Sunday evening or Monday morning) because I did there the last two years of my chemistry degree and I liked so much living there. It's a very quiet city to live as Toledo and sincerely I keep very good memories of my two-year stay there.
I love Toledo! Have wonderful memories and dear friends there. It's a beautiful city where I felt like the city had a real soul and was living around me. Although there are so many tourists there. Mostly on weekends and mostly Spanish from Madrid. Am I correct? :)
@@annivali4356 well, it depends on the season of the year because there are also many foreign tourists who visit Toledo during the whole year but yes, people from Madrid go to Toledo every weekend because Toledo has many different things than Madrid to offer and it's relatively near. But in Toledo you should difference between the old historical centre (what you probably have been in or visited) and the new city (where I live) and they are very different each other.

The coast is what i like, i am dutch, and there is a large Community of dutch people around Benidorm.... And very nice weather, soft winters. Central spain is very cold!
This seems to be a very amazing place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!

I lived my early years in a small town in Badajoz, then moved to Alcalá de Henares in Madrid and to Kingston, Ontario, after that. I came to live to Ciudad Real 20 years ago. I do not recomend CR for vacations or even a short visit but I do as an excellent place to live in. The best one I can advise to myself.

Ciudad Real is a small provincial capital, a nice and livable city and could be more beautiful, but in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as a result of great speculation, dozens of really beautiful and historical buildings disappeared, replaced by modern buildings of questionable good taste, for example the Town Hall 14:26. A widespread practice in all the cities and towns of Spain, that could be even more beautiful today...
Glad you mentioned this because it's true of many towns and cities as you say. My parents in law come from Valladolid which was ruined by the destruction of beautiful old houses to be replaced by architectural rubbish. Many would be surprised by how damaged Salamanca was during this period. It wasn't just speculation but shocking corruption. Italy, on the other hand, has preserved its architectural heritage magnificently.

Stuart, nice one. Something happened there which \i have never seen or heard before. I'm talking about the exchange you had with the local resident. It is a great idea to feature this more. I understand it may be rude to have a camera stuck in someones face whilst they are talking to you so you could turn it off or point it away but even to have the volume and the subtitles I thought really worked. It gives an extra dimension. Your pronunciation and understanding of the language is first class, why not try that more it makes a great watch/understanding.
Next month I''m heading to the Ciudad Real province to teach English for a year. I've been placed in 2 schools in the pueblo Alcázar de San Juan, which is about 45mins to an hour away from the Ciudad Real city. I was wondering if you had any advice on whether I should get accommodation in the city centre and commute to my placement, or live in the pueblo and commute out when I want to? Thanks!

It's very nice to have you here in my dear city, Stuart! The charm and beautiful sightings are in the towns around (check the El Viso Palace), but the capital city is perfect for living, mostly if you have a job with a 900+ € salary. I work as a receptionist at a hotel and I'm quite happy about the amount of visitors we have, is nice to welcome people to your place but not having the problems that massive tourism brings. I'm surprised you found the nightlife at the Torreón area scarce... You must be quite a party guy! 🤪 If you need anything, just let me know! Keep up the great work man!
Hi Stuart. I want to start by saying I really like your videos, they're great. I'm from Scotland, and I taught English in Salamanca for 2 years. Then, I moved to Ciudad Real for a year, and worked in a language academy there. I'm currently teaching English in the Universidad Pablo Olavide in Sevilla. I liked Ciudad Real, a lot of people criticise it for being ugly, but it has a certain charm I can't quite put my finger on. I found the Manchegos to be friendlier than the Salamantinos, even though Salamanca is a much nicer city visually. I recommend you visit the Irish bar Deicey Reillys, my local when I was there. The only Irish thing about it is the name, due to the fact very few expats live in CR. I know all the bar staff, really friendly people. However, if you dont know them, it can be a bit "cliquée " at first. Take care, looking forward to more of your videos Gary

Ciudad real is the province with the cheapest rent prices in Spain, it's nice if you have a job. Weather is quite extreme except in spring and fall, but they don't last for long...

I think "real city" would be "ciudad verdadera". The title Royal City arose because the king, Afonso X created a new city in in 1255. "Es por ello que Alfonso X decidió fundar una ciudad en una nueva ubicación, a 9 km de Alarcos, en la aldea conocida como Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil. Esto ocurre en 1255. ... A partir de este momento la ciudad pasó a llamarse Ciudad Real. Desde su fundación hasta el siglo XV Ciudad Real vivió una época de crecimiento."
That's it. The real medieval king's emplacement in this part of the border (remember that the Peninsula was divided between muslims kingdoms and christians ones) was Alarcos, with a well defended fortification, and close water access, nearby to Guadiana's river. The problem was that the muslims conquered the place after Alarcos battle in 1195 and, decades later, was reconquered by Alfonso VIII is his way to Navas de Tolosa battle (Jaen's province), when the border between kingdoms were stablished in Andalucia. By then, the King tried to repopulate the city, but settlers thought it was a cursed, and hard to defend place from the muslims "razzias". The point is that the true power in this lands belongs to the Calatrava Order, with their holy mission to protect them from muslims (encomiendas in spanish): one of the four spanish military orders (likewise the Templars or Teutonic Order), and one of the oldest in the world, with several propertys in the area; castles, villages and the center of their power in the city of Almagro. So, the castillian kingdom can't allow that; The Castillan King must have the same power opposite to the Order, and his maestre, that really acted as feudal lord. That's why Alfonso X chosed Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil; it's belongs to Alarcos, so it was kingdom's property and, first, Villa Real was founded (Royal Village) in 1255 as a King's menace to the Order. It was two century's later when castillian King, Juan II, gifted the village with the City title's, due to their support in the dynasty wars agaisnt the military orders. Ciudad Real is called like that since 1420. Royal City by king's decision. In fact, for years in the XV century it was one of the most important cities in Castilla's Kingdom; One of the two castilla's royal chancellery was placed in Ciudad Real alongside the Holy Office of the Inquisition, later placed in Toledo.
You were very gentle and vague about the airport, which is considered one of the biggest corruption cases in Spain and in Europe. According to the BBC the "Ciudad Real airport was the most spectacular raid on public money ever". Local politicians made a fortune off the inflated contracts, and they were never punished.
I think that people eventually receive the consequences (rewards or punishments) for their actions/inactions. We may not see them get their due, but it may fall under the Universal Law of Compensation???
Ciudad REAL it's because in the Middle Ages there were cities or towns that were welcome to be realengo, that is, to depend on the royal jurisdiction instead of depending on the noble or the bishop of the area. Normally they gained in freedoms and rights.

Great to see you in this part of the country Stuart. It's little explored by foreigners and Spaniards alike. I have to admit that I usually pay flying visits through La Mancha, stopping off for a visit to something and some lunch somewhere. Last year I spent some time in Calzada de Calatrava, Almagro and Belmonte on route to Cuenca. All very interesting and some great castles. Consuegra is well worth a visit too with the quintessential windmills of Don Quixote. One thing that was very obvious was the small populations in towns and villages with very little employment opportunities. I'm sure it's a little better in Ciudad Real, as a regional capital, but youth unemployment is very high as you point out. Regions like this are suffering depopulation as the young clear out to find work elsewhere at the same time Spain's population continues to age. You can see it places like this. Personally I find the landscape a tad monotonous and a two hour commute to get to work each day is not likely to improve your way of life. I disagree that it's a plus that there are no tourists. Places like this desperately need tourists to fire up the local economy and the authorities have been promoting the region with Don Quixote tours and the like. To explore this region properly you need a car and it is worth doing but I think it's a tough recommendation as a place to move to for work, even when you factor the low cost of living. Cheers.

Hi Luis, I hope I didn't in anyway offend. I did say that things would be better in the city than the surrounding towns and villages. Clearly, if you can get well paid work in places like Ciudad Real you can enjoy a low cost of living with all the benefits. I do think La Mancha could do with a few more visitors. It's a very interesting part of Spain to visit and you're unlikely to be overrun like Barcelona or Madrid after all. Cheers.

Los legisladores desde 1992 cuando el alcalde socialista, Don Lorenzo Selas dejó la alcaldía, solo se han dedicado a tener una ciudad de funcionarios, servicios, estudiantes, jubilados y ya... el hecho de que no quieran las administraciones que nadie importante se instale en la ciudad hace que la gente que hemos nacido y nos hemos criado en ella debido a la poca demanda laboral nos acabemos yendo de ella, y yo me tuve que ir a mi pesar... Puede seguir siendo tranquila con empleo, pero espantando al empleo y apostando por jubilados, gente con alto poder económico que trabaja en Madrid y vive en Ciudad Real, estudiantes y funcionarios a largo plazo la dejará como un pueblecito... Los legisladores se empeñan en decir que apuestan por el empleo, pero lo cierto es que no lo quieren, no quieren que se instalen grandes empresas, industrias, etc... y se de industrias que están por la provincia que se querían instalar allí, y finalmente se fueron a otro lugar dado el poco interés del ayuntamiento porque se instalaran. The problem of the city, because it could remain small without problems, without growing excessively, continuing to walk from end to end is that the administrations prevent it from progressing. Just wondering from the other side of the planet, do the Spanish realise Don Quixote was NOT a real person in history OR do the celebrate the liturary character that the Author created? I noted he was very prominent, in and around the City. It felt like the Spanish may think he was a real person? Imagine if the Italians had statues on Pinocchio everywhere and hero worshiped him, or the Americans paying homage to Mickey Mouse as a real mouse/person ..... Just wondering how the character is viewed by the people of Spain.

I was not suggesting the Spanish are stupid, the Spanish are as intelligent and not intelligent (and everything in between) as every other Nationality on the planet. Indeed many great artists and thinkers have come from Spain. What I was trying to understand was whether Spaniards celebrated Don Q as a Fictional Character, or real historic person? This was not clear. I just didn't pick up on anything celebrating Miguel de Cervantes, the real hero and author of Don Q. Miguel de Cervantes was a real hero and person in Spanish liturary history, and absance of anything (obvious) celebrating a real Spaniard hero, just made me wonder how the Spanish view Don Q? A Fictional Character with more public affection than the Artist/Author who created him.... Just interesting from an outsiders perspective. As for the Book being the biggest selling non religious book in the World, I couldn't find anything to verify that ad fact. Indeed on the world's largest selling books list, it dosnt appear at all. Admittedly I only checked Guinness Book of Records and Wikki. What it is noted for is being the World's first Novel! That is very cool, and again is (to me at least) the reason why I think I would expect to see Miguel de Cervantes celebrated, though his work being celebrated is as much about him I guess, just like any Artist in history, thinking Monet, Picasso, Dali as examples.... Though arguably Dali (the person) is possibly as recognised as any of his individual works..... Anyway, great to understand that the Spanish celebrate the Fictional Character, the piece of work as such and don't somehow confuse the fiction for real history. Cheers.

It all kicks off on Thursday with thousands of students flooding a parking lot with their drinks and then making their way to the local nightclubs. Yes, we would get a bit bored from time to time, especially that a train to Madrid at 23 euros one way is quite a bit for a student, but the atmosphere was amazing, people very friendly and worth to mention that everything within walking distance makes life very comfortable. The city is very cheap, it is also very Spanish for a less globalised experience and socially amazing - you get onto the street and you meet a friend within 3 minutes. I miss it so much. Great video as well, thanks for giving me that "someone's slicing onion" feeling about the place I have taken to so much.

Despite being a fanatic for everything Spanish I have never made it to Ciudad Real. But then I don't live two hours away by car. I have visited several places nearby though. Around the city there are loads of interesting sights like las Lagunas de Ruidera, located 132 kms. to the east, Almagro with its spectacular Plaza Mayor, located 27 kms. southeast of the city, and finally Calzada de Calatrava with the majestic castle of Calatrava, located 42 kms. south. An interesting trip is to come from Mérida in Estremadura crossing the immense region of dams and reservoirs passing through Almadén (mercury mines) and the industrial center of Puertollano. You cross one of the most isolated areas of Spain, called la Siberia.
I was born in Ciudad Real, and I really appreciate the kind of videos like this one,showing the hidden and peaceful Spain through the eyes of a foreing. It is always a pleasure to remember lots of experiences some years ago.

I moved to Ciudad Real from Madrid and lived there for three years. I can confirm that my quality of life was excellent all along that time. I finally returned to Madrid six years ago and still miss the city and its people. The video is accurate and I would like to underlie how friendly the locals are: it was very easy to fit such a comfortable way of living. I strongly recommend Ciudad Real to reside, not necessarily to visit if you have limited time to spend in Spain (only a few things of remarkable interest for tourism, much less than other Spanish places around). Congrats for this video.
I live in Toledo since 1992 but for two years between 2008 and 2010 I was living there in Ciudad Real during the weekdays (the weekends I returned to Toledo and come back to CR on Sunday evening or Monday morning) because I did there the last two years of my chemistry degree and I liked so much living there. It's a very quiet city to live as Toledo and sincerely I keep very good memories of my two-year stay there.
I love Toledo! Have wonderful memories and dear friends there. It's a beautiful city where I felt like the city had a real soul and was living around me. Although there are so many tourists there. Mostly on weekends and mostly Spanish from Madrid. Am I correct? :)
@@annivali4356 well, it depends on the season of the year because there are also many foreign tourists who visit Toledo during the whole year but yes, people from Madrid go to Toledo every weekend because Toledo has many different things than Madrid to offer and it's relatively near. But in Toledo you should difference between the old historical centre (what you probably have been in or visited) and the new city (where I live) and they are very different each other.

I lived my early years in a small town in Badajoz, then moved to Alcalá de Henares in Madrid and to Kingston, Ontario, after that. I came to live to Ciudad Real 20 years ago. I do not recomend CR for vacations or even a short visit but I do as an excellent place to live in. The best one I can advise to myself.

Ciudad Real is a small provincial capital, a nice and livable city and could be more beautiful, but in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as a result of great speculation, dozens of really beautiful and historical buildings disappeared, replaced by modern buildings of questionable good taste, for example the Town Hall 14:26. A widespread practice in all the cities and towns of Spain, that could be even more beautiful today...
Glad you mentioned this because it's true of many towns and cities as you say. My parents in law come from Valladolid which was ruined by the destruction of beautiful old houses to be replaced by architectural rubbish. Many would be surprised by how damaged Salamanca was during this period. It wasn't just speculation but shocking corruption. Italy, on the other hand, has preserved its architectural heritage magnificently.

Stuart, nice one. Something happened there which \i have never seen or heard before. I'm talking about the exchange you had with the local resident. It is a great idea to feature this more. I understand it may be rude to have a camera stuck in someones face whilst they are talking to you so you could turn it off or point it away but even to have the volume and the subtitles I thought really worked. It gives an extra dimension. Your pronunciation and understanding of the language is first class, why not try that more it makes a great watch/understanding.

The charm and beautiful sightings are in the towns around (check the El Viso Palace), but the capital city is perfect for living, mostly if you have a job with a 900+ € salary.
I work as a receptionist at a hotel and I'm quite happy about the amount of visitors we have, is nice to welcome people to your place but not having the problems that massive tourism brings.

Hi Stuart. I want to start by saying I really like your videos, they're great. I'm from Scotland, and I taught English in Salamanca for 2 years. Then, I moved to Ciudad Real for a year, and worked in a language academy there. I'm currently teaching English in the Universidad Pablo Olavide in Sevilla.
I liked Ciudad Real, a lot of people criticise it for being ugly, but it has a certain charm I can't quite put my finger on. I found the Manchegos to be friendlier than the Salamantinos, even though Salamanca is a much nicer city visually. I recommend you visit the Irish bar Deicey Reillys, my local when I was there. The only Irish thing about it is the name, due to the fact very few expats live in CR. I know all the bar staff, really friendly people. However, if you dont know them, it can be a bit "cliquée " at first.

Ciudad real is the province with the cheapest rent prices in Spain, it's nice if you have a job. Weather is quite extreme except in spring and fall, but they don't last for long...

I think "real city" would be "ciudad verdadera". The title Royal City arose because the king, Afonso X created a new city in in 1255. "Es por ello que Alfonso X decidió fundar una ciudad en una nueva ubicación, a 9 km de Alarcos, en la aldea conocida como Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil. Esto ocurre en 1255. ... A partir de este momento la ciudad pasó a llamarse Ciudad Real. Desde su fundación hasta el siglo XV Ciudad Real vivió una época de crecimiento."
That's it. The real medieval king's emplacement in this part of the border (remember that the Peninsula was divided between muslims kingdoms and christians ones) was Alarcos, with a well defended fortification, and close water access, nearby to Guadiana's river. The problem was that the muslims conquered the place after Alarcos battle in 1195 and, decades later, was reconquered by Alfonso VIII is his way to Navas de Tolosa battle (Jaen's province), when the border between kingdoms were stablished in Andalucia. By then, the King tried to repopulate the city, but settlers thought it was a cursed, and hard to defend place from the muslims "razzias".
The point is that the true power in this lands belongs to the Calatrava Order, with their holy mission to protect them from muslims (encomiendas in spanish): one of the four spanish military orders (likewise the Templars or Teutonic Order), and one of the oldest in the world, with several propertys in the area; castles, villages and the center of their power in the city of Almagro.
So, the castillian kingdom can't allow that; The Castillan King must have the same power opposite to the Order, and his maestre, that really acted as feudal lord.
That's why Alfonso X chosed Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil; it's belongs to Alarcos, so it was kingdom's property and, first, Villa Real was founded (Royal Village) in 1255 as a King's menace to the Order. It was two century's later when castillian King, Juan II, gifted the village with the City title's, due to their support in the dynasty wars agaisnt the military orders. Ciudad Real is called like that since 1420. Royal City by king's decision.
In fact, for years in the XV century it was one of the most important cities in Castilla's Kingdom; One of the two castilla's royal chancellery was placed in Ciudad Real alongside the Holy Office of the Inquisition, later placed in Toledo.
You were very gentle and vague about the airport, which is considered one of the biggest corruption cases in Spain and in Europe. According to the BBC the "Ciudad Real airport was the most spectacular raid on public money ever". Local politicians made a fortune off the inflated contracts, and they were never punished.

Ciudad REAL it's because in the Middle Ages there were cities or towns that were welcome to be realengo, that is, to depend on the royal jurisdiction instead of depending on the noble or the bishop of the area. Normally they gained in freedoms and rights.

Great to see you in this part of the country Stuart. It's little explored by foreigners and Spaniards alike. I have to admit that I usually pay flying visits through La Mancha, stopping off for a visit to something and some lunch somewhere. Last year I spent some time in Calzada de Calatrava, Almagro and Belmonte on route to Cuenca. All very interesting and some great castles. Consuegra is well worth a visit too with the quintessential windmills of Don Quixote. One thing that was very obvious was the small populations in towns and villages with very little employment opportunities. I'm sure it's a little better in Ciudad Real, as a regional capital, but youth unemployment is very high as you point out. Regions like this are suffering depopulation as the young clear out to find work elsewhere at the same time Spain's population continues to age. You can see it places like this.
Personally I find the landscape a tad monotonous and a two hour commute to get to work each day is not likely to improve your way of life. I disagree that it's a plus that there are no tourists. Places like this desperately need tourists to fire up the local economy and the authorities have been promoting the region with Don Quixote tours and the like. To explore this region properly you need a car and it is worth doing but I think it's a tough recommendation as a place to move to for work, even when you factor the low cost of living. Cheers.

Hi Luis, I hope I didn't in anyway offend. I did say that things would be better in the city than the surrounding towns and villages. Clearly, if you can get well paid work in places like Ciudad Real you can enjoy a low cost of living with all the benefits. I do think La Mancha could do with a few more visitors. It's a very interesting part of Spain to visit and you're unlikely to be overrun like Barcelona or Madrid after all. Cheers.

Los legisladores desde 1992 cuando el alcalde socialista, Don Lorenzo Selas dejó la alcaldía, solo se han dedicado a tener una ciudad de funcionarios, servicios, estudiantes, jubilados y ya... el hecho de que no quieran las administraciones que nadie importante se instale en la ciudad hace que la gente que hemos nacido y nos hemos criado en ella debido a la poca demanda laboral nos acabemos yendo de ella, y yo me tuve que ir a mi pesar... Puede seguir siendo tranquila con empleo, pero espantando al empleo y apostando por jubilados, gente con alto poder económico que trabaja en Madrid y vive en Ciudad Real, estudiantes y funcionarios a largo plazo la dejará como un pueblecito... Los legisladores se empeñan en decir que apuestan por el empleo, pero lo cierto es que no lo quieren, no quieren que se instalen grandes empresas, industrias, etc... y se de industrias que están por la provincia que se querían instalar allí, y finalmente se fueron a otro lugar dado el poco interés del ayuntamiento porque se instalaran. Just wondering from the other side of the planet, do the Spanish realise Don Quixote was NOT a real person in history OR do the celebrate the liturary character that the Author created? I noted he was very prominent, in and around the City. It felt like the Spanish may think he was a real person? Imagine if the Italians had statues on Pinocchio everywhere and hero worshiped him, or the Americans paying homage to Mickey Mouse as a real mouse/person ..... Just wondering how the character is viewed by the people of Spain.

I was not suggesting the Spanish are stupid, the Spanish are as intelligent and not intelligent (and everything in between) as every other Nationality on the planet. Indeed many great artists and thinkers have come from Spain.
What I was trying to understand was whether Spaniards celebrated Don Q as a Fictional Character, or real historic person? This was not clear.
I just didn't pick up on anything celebrating Miguel de Cervantes, the real hero and author of Don Q.
Miguel de Cervantes was a real hero and person in Spanish liturary history, and absance of anything (obvious) celebrating a real Spaniard hero, just made me wonder how the Spanish view Don Q?
A Fictional Character with more public affection than the Artist/Author who created him.... Just interesting from an outsiders perspective.
As for the Book being the biggest selling non religious book in the World, I couldn't find anything to verify that ad fact. Indeed on the world's largest selling books list, it dosnt appear at all. Admittedly I only checked Guinness Book of Records and Wikki. What it is noted for is being the World's first Novel! That is very cool, and again is (to me at least) the reason why I think I would expect to see Miguel de Cervantes celebrated, though his work being celebrated is as much about him I guess, just like any Artist in history, thinking Monet, Picasso, Dali as examples.... Though arguably Dali (the person) is possibly as recognised as any of his individual works.....
Anyway, great to understand that the Spanish celebrate the Fictional Character, the piece of work as such and don't somehow confuse the fiction for real history.
