- We're taking another trip to Olmec's Temple with this rundown of some of the very worst temple runs ever seen on the Nick GaS classic, Legends of the Hidden Temple.
In the past I've made videos covering 90s nick gameshows including the best temple runs, the best hidden temple teams, and even some of the most iconic stories from the Nickelodeon GUTS' aggrocrag, but this video is a celebration of Nickelodeon gameshow struggles.
Featuring runs like golden cricket cage of khan, the golden pepperoni of Catherine de Medici, and the jeweled necklace of montezuma, this video highlights some of the funniest and most tragic temple runs including that some that end with infamous Shrine of the Silver Monkey.

I get that there was high pressure but still the silver monkey shouldn’t have ended that many runs. I guess maybe the pieces didn’t fit together easily
@@maseck7118 agreed but it's important to remember this was done pretty late at night, they were under a time limit, most were spooked by the Guards and the Shrine was pretty deep into the Temple.
You have to remember all the pizza and carb heavy crap they fed these kids right before they did the run.
Sneaky tough. Not only do you have to do that under pressure, but as you mentioned, they have to do it backwards. That's why so many get turned around with the middle piece.
I think the toughest parts were the fact that Temple Runs were at the end of a 14-hour day of shooting and the psychological duress of (A) fear of temple guards and (B) adrenaline charging through your veins giving you a hardcore case of reptile brain.

@@FJX716 Believe it or not, statistically the worst team in the Temple Run was the Orange Iguanas. They had 4 wins in 25 tries for a 16% success rate, easily the worst of the six teams. The Purple Parrots only had 3 wins but also had fewer tries than any other team at 11. Percentage-wise, that's a 27% success rate, which is about average.
The most frustrating part of The Lost Lion Tail of Little John is that Marie and Claude only ended up going to the temple because of a tragic mistake by the other team in the third temple game. They had to climb up three giant steps and hang up a sign, and the Silver Snakes were leading. But the sign was propped up poorly, and just as the first Silver Snake got onto the third step, it fell all the way down to the bottom, forcing them to go back down and giving the Purple Parrots the win. It was so frustrating.
Dishonorable mention goes to The Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley. In that run, Blue Barracuda Larry had perhaps the worst silver monkey assembly attempt ever. The base was backwards, the torso was upside-down, and the head was sideways, and he never figured this out. He just kept trying to jam the head down until time ran out.

That Claude has to be the worst contestant ever. He infuriated me even more than the Trident girl.
My thoughts on the difficulty of the monkey.
Build the statue facing you, then turn the whole thing around.😅 😅😅why didn't anyone try this?
Makes you wonder if the producers directly told the contestants before taping that segment “assemble the monkey facing away from you because we make the rules.”
Mine are
5. The Bonnet of Dolly Madison- they did so good up until the dark forest, they still got the artifact, but it couldve been a win.
4. The Golden Pepperoni of Catherine De’Medici- they didnt do that bad until the very end and they missed the artifact.
3. The Smashed Printing Plate of Frederick Douglass- they were a terrible pairing lol they obviously hated each other and the front runner was too scared of the temple guards and his partner’s yelling was obnoxious.
2. The Broken Wing of Icarus- i just cant with this one. Was going to be a clear win but made a terrible decision that cost them the win.
1. The Broken Trident of Poseidon- i struggle with this one. She seemed to have a clear path to victory with a great strategy up until she got the artifact, it seemed like she forgot that the end goal was to get out of the temple with it.
I feel like a lot of people forget about The Bonnet of Dolley Madison. I felt so bad for the contestant getting so confused in the Dark Forest - she kept trying to use an inactive actuator and I think it threw her off. Kirk yelling "There you go!" when she kept using the wrong actuator didn't help.
The sad thing is that the first four runs were all very winnable. The first two could've been solo runs if the first runner didn't try to go straight for the artifact. The third run had a pretty favorable layout and a good half pendant placement. And the pepperoni run likely ends differently if Chris goes in second.
They are scripted from the start. Hence why the limit on life amulets is 2 per team. There will always be one temple guard left. You only win when they want you too. Exactly when they want you to. Early? They’ll put him behind the first door. More drama? Appears more later. No one has ever won this game without the producers knowing who before it ever started.
I completely agree about The Jeweled Necklace of Montezuma; the first two guards were completely avoidable if the frontrunner had entered through The Ledges and not tried going up into Medusa's Lair - which I'm convinced was a dead end, because the production team wouldn't have made it that easy of a win, especially in Season 2.
Great video Although a run that you might miss. The broken trident of Poseidon was a bad run. Although they didn't run into any temple guards. Might have been a good dishonorable mention. But that is more so a tragic run then the worst.
I have a really hard time watching that run. Literally everything in your favor and you STILL cant win.

That run would've been a perfect solo win with two Pendants of Life if Kimberly didn't make those mistakes she made!

Unrelated but... I'm not a fan of Nickelodeon's game shows in my opinion. Other than Double Dare and BrainSurge.
I'm kinda glad they just decided to get rid of these and focused me on their animated cartoons and live-action sitcoms.
What about the Walking Stick of Harriet Tubman.....that was an EPIC FAIL of a run due to the 2nd player not paying attention to her partners path into the temple
They'd have at least gotten the artifact if Ryann had just paid attention. When you have just one or 1.5 pendants, the wisest course was always to follow your partner's path. Not to run up to the entrance room your partner didn't choose and find the third Temple Guard with your face.

I was surprised that the run where a door accidentally re-locked behind the first player didn’t make it, though that one may be less tragic since the team was allegedly awarded the grand prize due to the technical error
I don't know if that's what I got from that but as far as I recall, they were given the 2nd prize just because of that faulty door, that being said that was a bad error to have.
@@MattZRJSRoxy Yeah I think one of the contestants revealed that during an interview, since had that door not accidentally re-locked, they would have reached the artifact (time ran out when they were just one room away and all they had to do was slide down the Pharaoh's Secret Passage).
@@amwfan88 I just checked the interview and she said they got the 2nd prize which I take to mean the prize that you get for actually getting the artifact but not the grand prize.

I just watched that one and it is a great example of what I hated about this show. Hey was actually doing decent and then oh no Temple Guard you lose. It was such BS! There was nothing the kids could do about it. You were already set to lose from the start. If the show didn't want to pay out the prizes they just have temple guards pop out. Like he shows in this video it seemed like they had them very close to the beginning a lot of times too.
@@HerecomestheCalavera Early Temple Guards are actually much easier. If runner #1 is going to get caught, the sooner, the better. Plus, that clears out 2 Guards for runner #2.
@@HerecomestheCalaverathe biggest issue was back in season 1, the half pendants were put in really obscure spots (only once that season did somebody find a half pendant). So unless you go in with two full pendants, you were all but screwed.

You should really do a video like this on Nick Arcade. I've seen some of the worst players in the history of Nickelodeon on that game show.

Every time I see the Golden Pepperoni run, all I can think of at the end of the run is the scene from Monty Python where John Cleese says “How could you miss?!”
Silver Monkey looked easy as hell for the viewers as home. In person, it must have looked very very different. I'll never understand the struggle since I was never a contestant. I try to keep that in mind when watching old Legends episodes.
Given the puzzle never changed, even as a kid, I felt like I could do it pretty quick. It must have been way harder for Season 1 kids, though, given you'd never seen it before.
Also, you don't HAVE to solve it facing the audience; you can just do it on the floor then place the complete statue on the pedastal.
On the face of it, sure. But after a series of physical challenges AND a pretty brutal time constraint, I suspect it's not nearly as easy.
Now I’m really rattled that they remembered to get the other half of the pendant in majority of the runs. No wonder Season 1 of The Lost Temple Guards was limited to just 79 episodes.

Maybe not the worst but "The walking stick of Harriet Tubman" had an interesting run because its the only run to end in the crypt! The 2nd runner didnt follow her partners entry path in the ledges and they didnt have a 2nd pendant, D'OH!

I always used to wonder what the temple guard actors would do immediately after 'escorting' a kid off set through a door or whatever. Did they stay in character or immediately give high fives and/or apologize for the trauma?

There's a behind-the-scenes clip shot by one of the directors that shows the entire Mussel-Shell Armor of Apanuugpak Temple Run from his perspective. After they wrap shooting, the entire crew congratulates the team, including one of the Temple Guard actors who has removed his headdress and mask. If I were to guess, after capturing them, the actor probably just led them through the back of house area while having a casual chat with them.
It wasn’t necessarily a failed run because the team actually won the grand prize, but one of my favorite episodes was when this girl ran out of the temple and just as she was able to cross the finish line she trips on a camera cord or something that production just draped a brown cloth over 😂😂😂 every time I see that episode I die laughing
Jennifer from John Sutter & the Map to the Lost Gold Mine. That's actually one of my favorite episodes because of how entertaining it was from beginning to end. Kirk seemed extra goofy throughout the show, which made for some really funny commentary throughout.
I remember watching the Pepperoni run as a kid. Man that was bad. Definitely not as bad as the Cricket Cage run though (and that is coming from a Silver Snakes fan). I'll bet that the rage induced by those 2 episodes caused some kids to say their first curse words.
The Purple Parrots in the Golden Pepperoni run was an all time epic fail classic😂😂😂😂😂😂

To be fair, One-Eyed Jack did have an unusual layout, where none of the doors went down, so it might have been the only time Ancient Warriors was a dead end (they removed the ladder down to Jester's Court for Season 3). Plus, it gives us one of my favorite "Fogg-isms," when the second player goes in - "He's gonna have to make up some big-time time!" I agree it's still a terrible run, though.

In the revival, Dee Bradley Baker (as Olmec) finally got to call the Silver Monkey what we all wanted to but couldn’t because we’d be grounded for a week: “that damned statue.” Also, to be fair, they had to assemble it with the pieces pointing towards the camera (away from them), much like how from the perspective of contestants on Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, they had to find the correct locations with the map upside down from their perspective so it appeared right side up on camera.

There's this kid who got the artifact with one minute left to exit. He was extremely slow and didn't make it out. To be fair he was one of the tallest kids who was on the show.
At least he could’ve stood up to the Temple Guards.
I'm a Green Monkeys fan so this one pains me to suggest...but Pecos Bill's Lost Lariat. Frontrunner was solid, second runner was kinda slow but made it to the lariat and then Kirk low key costs them the win by suggesting a different path.
Another one, this time from the Red Jaguars, is the Treasure of Anne Bonny. Two average players, second runner makes it to the treasure chest with more than enough time, but the combination of a bulky artifact and a poor escape route made for a loss. What makes it even bigger a shame is had the team escaped the Temple then it would have made Layout IX a perfect 4/4 by the teams. Now THAT'S a tragedy.
I'm a Green Monkey fan also, but I think what REALLY killed that run was that Chris lost precious seconds in the Room of Three Torches; instead of completing that task, all he had to do was simply get on the well and descend to grab the lariat.
My bottom five worst runs, with my explanations why:
5. The Keys to the Alhambra (Red Jaguars) - Steve was okay, and got to within one room (artifact in the Dungeon) in the first thirty seconds, believe it or not, but a Temple Guard took him out in The Room of the Ancient Kings. Lisa gets to where he is, but naturally, the wall won't break down, so she goes backwards all the way to the Cave of Sighs! They only had one pendant, so how they didn't get caught by a third Guard is incredible.
4. Snow Cone of Mount Kilimanjaro (Silver Snakes) - I look at the obscurity of the legend itself as a contributing factor, and so the story was too obscure, and the artifact was kind of pointless; to be fair, they tried to take the best route possible, but the frontrunner spent too much time completing the objective in both the Headless Kings and Jester's Court (and remember, there's never a Guard in there). The strangest part was at the end - the second player tried to go up from the Dark Forest to the Shrine, which would have put her one room away, but the room was locked, so there was nowhere to go. You could see some rustling during the credits from the third guard in the Quicksand Bog, so the run would have had a triple capture if they had taken that route, because they only had 1.5 pendants. They only entered five rooms, and yet, it doesn't feel like an incredibly sloppy run, just too slow and confusing.
3. Blackbeard's Treasure Map (Red Jaguars) - The very first episode ever produced was a total disaster. With two pendants, the Red Jaguars should have had a great chance. But after a dead end in the Wheel Room, the first player totally panicked and was slow to open the door. She went across the Troubled Bridge, but didn't try to go down to the Throne Room. Another artifact in the Dungeon, so the bottom level might have been their safest bet. It's one of only two solo runs that end with the player running out of time.
2. The Golden Cricket Cage of Khan (Silver Snakes) - you might be surprised to see this as only #2, and you don't need me to tell you what's wrong with it. But, for me, there was one run that was worse than this, because it's the only one where I was actively rooting for the team to lose (and being a Red Jaguars fan, it's even more painful).
And that run is...
1. The Smashed Printing Plate of Frederick Douglass (Red Jaguars) - On the surface, it's not one big thing that really puts this up here, but a bunch of little things that added up into one unpleasant run to watch. What puts this up there for me is that the Red Jaguars might have cheated during the third Temple Game; it was the "sinking steps" game, and Dana did try to skip the first step at least once during the run. She may have done it a second time, but we'll never know because the camera cut away right before they made their successful run. This gave them two pendants to the Purple Parrots' zero, so they were supposed to be at full strength. The run itself was going to force them to go up and around, because the artifact was in the Tomb of the Headless Kings, so of course the bottom door in the Pit was never going to open. During the run, Jason really messed up several times. His swing from the Pit wasn't strong enough, so he had to climb the wall up to Sacred Markers. Next, he gets into Ancient Warriors and is making decent time, but he tries to game the Temple by only trying two sets of armor; he had a feeling that the first guard was in the last suit. He went backward to try to find an alternate route, but there wasn't one, so he had to give up his pendant to open up the door. He didn't take the Shrine-Forest passage (which did open) and went the long way, and actually didn't even complete the objective in Secret Password, but the door opened anyway. Once he got to the Dark Forest, he tried to game the Temple again by not reaching into the tree, but he was taken out with only 30 seconds left. While he was doing this, Dana was screaming at him the whole time to keep going. When she finally goes in, she's determined, but likely not going to get very far in 30 seconds. But she does something I've never seen - she dives too far down in the Ledges, gets stuck on the bottom level, and she takes the lower crawl tube instead of the upper one. As a result, she can't even get out of the Pit before time ran out. So, one player (or both) likely cheated, they tried to manipulate the run by avoiding the guards at all costs, and couldn't pull their weight at the end. You might have to watch the run carefully for yourself to see what I mean, but I just feel like this run violated the spirit of the show, which is the only time I can ever say that.
With Blackbeard's Treasure Map, if you watch closely, you'll see the frontrunner doesn't actually hit the button on the actuator in the Wheel Room. They hit around it, but it doesn't appear they ever made contact with the button. It probably wasn't a dead end, but because they didn't actually hit the button, we'll never know.

Even when I watched this as a kid I thought the Temple Guards were BS. There is literally nothing you can do about it. You walk into a room oh temple guard you lose! It was so cheap. It was basically a guarantee for the show to make the kids lose if they didn't want to give out those prizes.

You missed the Broken Trident of Poseidon, the girl got the artifact without a single Temple Guard encounter and then she DROPPED THE ARTIFACT. She took ages to get it back then went down the stairs to Jester's Court (i think) for some reason. Kirk gave up on her before the run even ended. Still, good video
Geez never realized the Temple Guards swan camped the Temple entrance...I remember there was ALWAYS a guard in the Living Forest...that room creeped me out...and I only WATCHED the show!!!

The Shrine of the Silver Monkey is the easiest thing to assemble. Also mind U, virtually almost every episode during the temple games, the statue is displayed completed. 🤦🏽♂️
All three pieces has to be in front of the camera not facing the temple.

Hard or not, the Shrine of the silver monkey was one of my favorite rooms. I was always bummed when they put the treasure there or we didn't go into the shrine.
I never watched any of the episodes where people had too much trouble. 😅😅😅

I actually worked as a temple guard in 3 episodes of season 2. The producer s would position us in the places that almost guaranteed capturing a contestant I'm less than 30 seconds.
Most contestants lost. The few that won were chosen in advance by the producers

While they did get caught by three guards in the second-fastest time, I give them a pass because it was a tough layout. More often than not, when an artifact is placed in the Dark Forest, they make the layouts as tough as possible. Other times, when it's been an easy layout and is in the Dark Forest (like in Missing Weather Maps of Charles Lindbergh, which is #7 on my list), there's usually one tactically smart player and one really slow-witted player, and that episode's run shows why. Another example of this is Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley; it was an easier layout, sticking mostly to the top floor before going down via the Shrine-Forest ladder, and they were one room away in the Shrine, but the kid did arguably the worst job of putting it together in history.
Had the frontrunner started up then they actually might have stood a chance at making it there, but I'm not gonna rip on them that hard.
Three piece puzzle harder to figure out than my ex.

We at least got to see a couple former contestants return. But I'll admit I didn't make it through a full episode when I tried to to watch it a few months back.
