This is a brilliantly written, acted, and shot scene! That moment when Kiku sat behind Mariko and she’s out of the frame, and it’s as if Mariko is speaking the words herself. You could just cut the tension with a knife!!!#Shogun
This show is a Masterpiece
Kiku speaking through Mariko is absolutely fantastic...
Lady Kiku is sooo 😍 (tbh all the women in this show are)
Lady Kiku: “Tell him, please visit again. I will count the moments.”
Mariko *translates*: “She is honored.”
Subtle, Mariko 🤣 #Shogun
And when she translated the exchanging of the weapons between Blackthorne and Fuji, she also flattened the emotional impact of the exchange. Can't risk her man getting the hots for his consort.
Everyone (rightly) talking about the other women in Shogun but we gotta give Kiku her 10s too. The way she clocked that Mariko and John tea IMMEDIATELY, she got Omi falling for her, she clocked what Yabushige was into during the first episode too…she’s way too good at her job
Kiku just gave Mariko braingasm just by speaking 😭👏🏾. I love the women of #ShogunFX
The setup of this scene is so brilliantly mind blowing 🤯, I mean there's #Kiku who's actually explaining, but it's translated through #Mariko for #Blackthorne, so that he can see only her. Hence the actual feelings of Mariko.
Wow, that was trippy! 🥹😌🫠
You got to give kiku her tens like she knows her craft, when she moved to sit next to mariko and the camera shifted accordingly
Like she clocked the tea and went to work
#SHOGUN
If Toranaga spared my life, as he did Blackthorn's, that would be enough for me. It would be all business and service.
Kiku is waaay too good at what she does #ShogunFX
Kiku definitely peeped and I don’t think KIku is the type of person you want to notice things lol #ShogunFX
Kiku is a sweetheart and she is definitely on the lovers' side.
#ShogunFX
Mariko translating for Kiku 🤝🏼 joi syncing with Mariette in Bladerunner 2049.
great screenwriting.
Ochiba and Kiku were the ones tonight especially Ochiba I love me a subtle villain #ShogunFX
The pronuncition here is terrible! ('sake', 'courtesan')... Obviously a robot.
i just hope that moving forward kiku only meets good costars and teams she's too nice to go through all of this
he did not pillow kiku
You will be surprised who Blackthorne will end up with at the end. I can promise you it will not be Mariko.
@@MiddleAgedGeek I think he should go for Fuji. She is fine.
@@TheCyberMantis You will know by the end of the series if you have not read the novel, my friend.
@@MiddleAgedGeek I have not read the novel. I look forward to the surprise.
@@TheCyberMantis Good decision. I hope you find the time to read it too.
As for me, no matter how different the series is with the novel, I am truly enjoying it.
Have a nice day.
Yabushich? Really?

In the novel, Toranaga is planning to buy Kiku's contract from mama-san. He realizes that Kiku is Omi's weakness and he wants to curb that weakness. Rewarding Blackthorne a night with Kiku is just that, a reward for saving his life and offering him the sword. The novel does a much better description of these scenes, and there is a more lively portrayal of Mariko, Kiku and Blackthorne's conversations which are better written than this TV version.
Now as for Mariko, shes just maybe 2 more episodes away from being killed.
Mariko goes to Osaka castle "under orders" by Toranaga to bring back his consorts. She confronts Ishido on the day of Lady Ochiba's birthday saying that she and Toranaga's consorts and other family members will be leaving Osaka castle. Ishido refuses, so Mariko initially tries to force their way out. But Toranaga forces number only a few hundred inside the walls of Osaka castle (mostly a token guard), and after fighting and deaths between several Toranaga browns and a nearly endless supply of Ishido grays, Mariko picks up a sword from a dead soldier (this is likely the naginata scene in the 2024 version where she is facing several samurai) and tries to engage some grays in a fight. The samurai being trained soldiers don't let her get close, instead keep a distance and try to wear her out so they can easily subdue her.
Mariko realizes this will only get her captured, so she stops and declares that as Lord Ishido is preventing her from carrying out her lord's orders, she has no choice but to commit seppuku. Initially she asks Lord Kiyama to be her second, as her son is engaged to one of Kiyama's granddaughters. He refuses and tries to use their shared christianity to get her to stop. So she asks Yabu instead.
While Mariko is getting ready to commit seppuku, Ishido, after some serious argument with Ochiba and some of the other regents and advisors, is convinced to stop Mariko from killing herself. If she kills herself, she will become a martyr for the other hostages. So he stops the seppuku and tells her he will issue a pass for anyone who wishes to leave Osaka.
That night, Ishido hires ninja to invade the Toranaga part of Osaka castle and kidnap Mariko. He also want's Blackthorne kidnapped so that Blackthorne can be used as a threat to make sure the christian daimyos on the council do not betray him later. In order for the ninja invasion to succeed, he threatens Yabu into helping by opening a secure entrance.
The ninja successfully invade but ultimately fail as Toranaga has somehow managed to secretly construct a safe room inside his part of the castle. Mariko, Blackthorne and several other people manage to get inside the safe room which has a thick solid secure door. The ninja threaten to use explosives to blow open the door and Blackthorne tries to find another way out while Mariko is leaning against the door trying to delay the ninja by claiming the door is stuck. The ninja grow impatient and blow the door open, which causes Mariko to sustain fatal injuries. With her dying breath, she accuses Ishido of illustrating this attack and it becomes her dying declaration. Ishido now has no choice but to unconditionally allow any hostage who wishes to leave Osaka castle. Mariko has successfully helped weaken Ishido and gather more allies for Toranaga.
Yabu's betrayal is discovered by Toranaga with the help of Omi and Yabu is ordered to commit seppuku.
Blackthorne is initially taken to the Jesuits and Spanish where he will be killed, but the head of the Jesuit order intervenes on his behalf and his life is spared, because his ship had been burned. Mariko had confessed to Father Alvito that Blackthorne is not a threat without his ship. Blackthorne believes it was either the Jesuits, the Portuguese or the christian daimyo who had caused the burning of his ship. He is initially devastated, but Toranaga hands him a letter left for him by Mariko saying she sacrificed his ship to save his life, and that he could always build another and left him her savings.
Of course, later we find out that Toranaga and Mariko planned this together. Because Toranaga considers Blackthorne a friend.
Ishido used ninja, why shouldn't I? But I hired one man and succeeded. Ishido failed.
The first time I saw you, I said "There's no excuse for rebellion" and you said "There's one- if you win". Ah, Anjin-san, I bound you to me then. I agree. Everything's right if you win.
Fifty times or more I've had to consider giving your life away but so far I've always managed to avoid it. I hope to continue to do that. Why?... because you make me laugh and I need a friend. I daren't make friends among my own people or among the Portuguese.... that I need one friend. And also your knowledge. Mariko-sama was right again. Before you go, I want to know everything you know.... I want to know how to navigate a ship around the earth and understand how a small island nation can defeat a huge empire. Perhaps the answer can apply to us and China.
(One of the things Blackthorne impresses Toranaga with is the fact that an island nation like England was able to defeat something like the Spanish armada, and how it is able to defend itself with only a navy. And Blackthorne has several times told Toranaga that he can go back to England, commission to buy or build several warships like the Erasmus and bring it back to Toranaga, which both Toranaga and Yabu are interested in. Blackthorne is also a trained shipwright.)
Mariko-san, it was your karma to die gloriously and live forever. Anjin-san, my friend, it is your karma to never leave this land. It is mine to be Shogun.
I have a disease where I can only read up to three lines.
Spoiler for the rest of the series. I have read the book but only remembers a few snippet. Mariko is the true game changer for Toranaga for her sacrifice brought the allies Toranaga needed to overcome Ishido.
I do remember from the book about teahouses between Osaka and Edo which Toranaga and his entourage stayed in. There were a whole lot of things omitted from the book to make the series for non-adults. Nevertheless, I am enjoying the series as is. It should make a lot of people be more curious of the novel and read it.
My main question will always be: Will the showrunner end it with Shogun or continue with Clavell's Asian saga of novels?
Disappointed that Mariko dies and doesn’t end up with Blackthorne. He was the only one to treated her like a whole person. He made her smile. She deserved happiness.
The dialogue between Toranaga and Mariko about these "plans" was very interesting because Mariko was able to decipher it. Mariko would have been a better son to Toranaga.
@@KK-of6hj Truly, this is the post-literate generation. So sorry...
Love the show but tired of videos like this narrated by a robot. Why in the world can it not pronounce "sake" correctly?
and "courtesan"...
Why is the person narrating this not articulate?
Please learn how to pronounce the words properly!
You killed all of their names but where I’m certain you’re not really invested in the job is the way you pronounced “Sake”.
“Sah-ke”. Not Sayck!
