The Japanese sword was considered a symbol of the samurai spirit, and it was considered disrespectful for a wife, daughter, or mother to hold it with her bare hands. The fact that she did not touch the gun with her bare hands when she held it suggests that she saw Blackthorne's gun as a Japanese sword for him.

just as it was insane to demand a samurai to hand over THEIR swords, it was obvious to everyone that his guns were the same to him. He made it clear that would happily take one man down with him in defiance.

Not so much as a way to not offend Fuji, but as a way for all three of them to plausibly deny it happened. To even suggest or imply a man slept with another man’s wife is an extreme insult and gives the husband, his father or brother right to kill the other man.
Fuji, a consort, does not care if Blackthorne sleeps with other women and it is even their job to arrange it if he wishes.

Why Usami Fuji gives her family heirlon to Blackthorne? When she could give him almost any sword and she would still serve him loyally... There are surely several reasons, but ONE as I remember from the book, is she and her name become ashamed... She was essentially on the way to make a honorary seppuku, but being ordered to become consort to Blackthorne, she could live on, even redeem herself . Mixed feelings on Fujiko of course. (she still demanded the right to make seppuku) Anyway, giving Blackthorne this fine sword was a way to save the swords honor. so that sword would get a new master with great honor, without risking to become broken in shame...

My favorite episode so far. For an ep with some of the gnarliest gore I've seen on television, it also had some of the sweetest, tenderest character work. Mariko, Fuji, and John being forced together against their will but finding peace in each other (as friends/confidants/respectful cohabitors/however you want to see it) was so rewarding. I love that everything slowed down to allow this to happen naturally.
And then the plot came roaring back in that last scene. Goddamn, Nagakado. I get why the kid wants to do things his own way and nip treachery in the bud instead of playing all these coy games (without realizing he himself got played), but it feels like he's doomed by the narrative now.

This Blackthorne is more realistic than Chamberlain in the 1980 version. The other characters' actors are not as impressive as the 1980 version. Also noble women at the start of the 17th Century acted with more decorum and grace than the new Mariko.

  • @nzcyclone

As others have said. Fuji was and is my favorite character of them all. She was for me in the original 1980's miniseries and is still in this 2024 miniseries. She has a tragic and very sad story. And although regarding her charactor between both versions the 2024 version added more backstory for her which was great. There was some changes in this one to earlier version and It also ended differently with her. But as far as Fuji becoming Blackthornes consort. There was a primary purpose for it which was not really explained. That is to become a Hatamoto. One must come from a Samurai family. Blackthorne does not. Therefore to add legitimacy to his rank and position. It made sense to make Fuji as his consort for a couple of reasons. 1. she is from a long standing and proud samurai family therefore there is the link and 2. it gives her a purpose since the death of both her husband and son. As to Fuji giving Blackthorne what she thinks is her fathers swords, agree with you again it links to the having a purpose.

Fermented soybeans, served cold, and stinks like rotting cheese like the show said.
Generally only eaten in Eastern Japan, so it may have been used as an additional signifier to show that they're "home" in Kanto rather than being in Osaka/Kansai.
Or maybe it's from the book. Natto is often the go-to "watch a foreigner try to eat this" food in Japan - similar to balut in the Philippines, stinky tofu in Taiwan/China, marmite/vegemite in the UK and Australia, lutefisk in Scandinavia, etc. Every culture seems to have one of these foods that were eaten 1000 years ago, but now only exist for people to try on a dare.

The classic Japanese wife is referred to as the “家内” and has almost complete authority over household events. The wife keeps the money, and the husband receives pocket money (this is the same in modern times and is often depicted in anime). I want Westerners to understand that Japanese wives are not devoted or obedient because of their weak position, but are strong because they are given rights (household finances and housework) and a sense of responsibility. The position of a full-time housewife is completely different from that of a Western-style housewife, so it is a misunderstanding that she is kind to her husband because she is devoted to her husband. She says, ``The husband bears the brunt outside the house, but within the home, the wife's opinion is more respected than the husband's. This is classic Japan.

Today on the west, women have ALL the freedoms and zero responsibility, even to the kids. My only fault was I did not talk enough and wasn't enough "spiritually developed" She went full bat shit crazy into New Age madness. Of course I have built the house and provided money for the first 10 years, working my ass off.
Cows never realize what a lightly taken divorce does to a man and children. I raised two of my daughters and the youngest one could easily achieve more in academics, if we were not separated. She was wild and reckless as me, but it ended well.
I always longed for: my home is my castle, so when I come home I don't need to keep fighting. Had this over my head outside, running my small business.

With all the injustices she had faced, I felt they were setting her up to betray Toranaga (and it still can go that way). So I was very leery of her. I empathized with her but I didn’t “like” her. This episode changed my whole emotional state with her. I don’t even entirely know why. It became my favorite scene of the episode when by all accounts it should’ve been the climactic last scene. I’m enamored now. And by the thumbnail to so many reviews of this episode, it seems to be pretty widespread.
