  • showing How to change the oil and fuel filters in a 8.2l Detroit diesel aka fuel pincher v8 in my 1986 f700. This is the turbo 8.2 Detroit diesel but the oil change is the same between the na Detroit engine and turbo Detroit engine. Stuck fuel filter and oil filter was hard to get off but the awesome little trick we did got them both off.

    Thanks for the vid! A friend gave us an '86 GMC school bus with a detroit 8.2 in it and you've guided me successfully through my first ever oil change and fuel filter replacement. The bus got successfully from northern california to southern california and is about drive all the way up the west coast!

    Thanks for the cool video! I did an oil change on my at the time newly acquired 7.3 powerstroke with the down pointed oil filter just like that. Up to that point I'd never read any manuals about prefilling the oil filter. I just knew by mechanical sense it would have been a dry start otherwise.

    I run Delo 400 SDE 15w40, Napa or Wix fuel and Oil filters. If you fuel run dry you shouldnt have to break loose the fuel lines to bleed it. Just refill fuel filters and turn her over she should fire just fine. I had a primary fuel filter/water separator drain failure and my system had tons of air afterwards and didnt have to crack the lines. I just poured a little ATF in the filters and fuel and sent it. I also use Hot shots EDT treatment in fuel. Runs great. Also it seems all the filters are hard to get loose even if they hand tight. Your next filter change will probably be as tight.

    So i have a boat woth 2 of these in noticed some oil laying around the top next to the one cover and the older mechanic said it's not showing any significant spray marks and appears to be a slow leak he said all these older diesels do it nothing to be concerned about and check oul every time i take her out. Thoughts? It's an 8.2 turbo detriot

    Hey this was helpful, thanks for posting. Hopefully getting into a BlueBird short bus 87’ with an 8.2… but I suspect it’s got the at545 and it’s max speed is 55… all the bad news about the 8.2’s has got me a little leary.. I’m planning on Toting eventually so I want this for that purpose… bro you think I should swap it for a 5.9 Cummins and a different trans?
    Thanks if you can find time to answer, any advice would be freakin awesome

    • @RacingRamFam
      @RacingRamFam  Před 2 lety

      Idk I love the 8.2 gets 15mpg hauling 12k pounds and pulling it 20k pound self around. Does 65mph max. Def not winning any races but holds speed good. Plus she quiet and just purrs lol

    • @TeamTopKick
      @TeamTopKick Před 2 lety +2

      5.9 is a bit small for a heavy bus and although they can be made to make big power dont have the cooling capacity and built to last very long for heavy duty use. I know there are RVs and heavy trucks speced with the 5.9 along side the 8.3 cummins but the 8.3L Cummins usually last longer in RV/Medium Duty applications than the 5.9s do and the 5.9 is basically a baby 8.3 anyways and the mods to make power from 5.9/8.3 Cummins and the DT366/DT466 is basically the same between those motors with the larger of the two being you would upgrade to a even larger turbo and even larger injectors. All four of those motors depending on the years could be had with the saught after P pumps too. There is a reason why medium/heavy duty engines are so heavy. a dry 8.2 without accesories is over 1,000 lbs. if your 8.2 is running good and you treat it right I would swap your AT545 for a MT643. They basically the same trans but the MT643 is a little beefier and has the benefit of converter lock up in 3rd and 4th so you should see a increase in fuel mileage. The AT545 is a non lockup trans and basically everyone who kills a AT545 replaces them with a MT643. It is a very common upgrade. Kinda like how GM owners end up swapping there 4L60E for a 4L80E. If you swap to a MT643 and end up blowing the 8.2L you will still be able to use the trans with most every medium duty diesel engine since its a SAE 2 bellhousing and was behind other medium duty diesel engines of the time like a International DT366/DT466 and Cummins 8.3L, etc. There is not much you can do to increase your top speed unless you swap your axle to a taller gear ratio and/or increase max engine rpm. You could change to a taller tire which will basically change your ratio and increase top speed but your going to be lose some low end. not many engines that will spin higher than a 8.2L they can rev pretty high for a diesel. Just know if you do swap the motor and keep the Allison no matter which model it is your going to have to have the trans shift points adjusted since every diesel engines powerband differs.

      @@TeamTopKick hey thanks a ton for your input! I decided to pass on the bus, and buy one with the 8.3 already. I’ll definitely upgrade the trans.

      Real no reason to run synthetic on these engines and pretty much everyone suggest you stay away from it for these motors. These engines really dont care what you use but if your a Rotella guy then T4 is better choice and cheaper. What these older mechanical pre emmisions diesels need is 15w40 diesel oil with a high Zinc/ZDDP content which non of the mainstream off the shelf low emmisions oils have today. So your only real choice is either a zinc oil supplement or a specialty "race" oil like HotShots Black Diamond Outlaw 15w40 oil but I dont know about you but I am not about to spend $60 per 5 quarts of oil. Lol. If you research the top off the shelf oils. Ie, Delvac, T4, T6, Delo, Duralac. Delo 400 has the highest Zinc/ZDDP content. Although it seems like T4/T6 is the best selling most widely used diesel oil.
