One thing i learned from working on so many detroits is, if the motor is empty of oil and new filters is on and empty, you can fill the truck until the oil gets to the a in usa on the dipstick, if its the same dipstick all the trucks ive serviced, after you fire it and the oil circulates, it puts it right to the full mark. I had to figure something out because I got tired of dropping a full oil filter lol

There is something that is very important to know about the oil filter housing/oil cooler on all series 60 engines. The the threaded part that goes into the oil filters can back out of the oil filter housing. When ever you go to spin on oil filters you should grab on to them and turn them clockwise to make sure they did not come loose. It would be a shame to spin the bearings out of one because one of the oil filters fell off.

Years ago there was.a series 60 in a Peter Bilt with almost a million miles with one oil drain. Pepsi Cola of.Gulf port owned it for several years. Later it was.bought by a guy that hauled Motor cycles. SHELL oil was.checking it. It had Gulf Coast paper towel filters. The mechanics would tear it down ever so often and Shell would measure.the parts. The mechanics would reassemble it and pour the used oil back in. Of course it used Shell Rotella. Conventional I think. The oil was 100% clean 100% of the time. I was talking about it once. Road King asked me for the owners phone number. They did an article on it. When I retired I lost track of it. Worked for a company years ago that had Luber Finers on everything.

How often should you change the transmission fluid? Some say dont change that if you are not having problems or the transmission might slip.

I know it’s an old video but I just purchased a pre-emissions 12.7 and I’d appreciate your opinion on injectors. Does anyone other than DD make good replacement injectors? Also, would you worry about the bull gear in it? The engine has about 750K on it and a very good service history but I know that the bull gear hasn’t been replaced. It’s a 2000 model engine so it doesn’t have the compact gear train in it. I used to drive for a small fleet(100) that were all equipped with 12.7s and I never personally witnessed a bull gear failure and they got the crap ran out of them with minimal maintenance . Obviously, since this vehicle is mine if it’s questionable at all I’d rather do it than have it fly apart. Thanks for the videos. Oh, you guys would come out cheaper spending your money on hookers and gambling than to keep feeding that tool buying addiction ya’ll got!🤑👍

You get more oil out by suctioning the oil out though the dipstick. Its also a good idea to run an engine flush prior to draining the old oil out, especially on diesel engines. Donaldson oil filters are best. Then you should use Amsoil as it provides 6x more wear protection than the DD spec.

a lot of companies say that because when the filters are in the engine it draws oil from the outside holes through the filter and out the center. technically filling the center of the filter means that oil wont be filtered when you put it back into the engine. another way around it is if you plug the center hole and fill it, that way the oil is forced through the filter

I know you guys have been doing this a long time but why are you are filling your filters in the center hole (the return clean side of the filter with unfiltered oil or fuel and not down into the dirty side only (outside row of intake holes)? New oil and fuel are still considered unfiltered. Isn't that why Cat says to not prefill the filters? I know you're doing a 12.7 in this video. From Fleetguard (Cummins) filter install bulletin (Important installation steps for spin on filters:
    ■ Make sure the filter head is clean and free of damage.
    ■ Apply a liberal amount of lube oil or diesel fuel to the surfaces of
all filter gaskets where they make contact with the head (Fig 2.).
DO NOT USE GREASE OR FIT WITH DRY GASKETS
    ■ Check the engine manufacturers’ requirements for prefilling fuel
    filters.
Never pre-fill the clean side of the fuel filter).
At Volvo we recommend installing filters dry and pre-priming them for contamination control - it really is worth the time to do it properly
Just a curiosity question? Thanks in Advance.

WASHINGTON we do it because it is less messy that way. When you unscrew them oil goes everywhere most of the time and risk dropping a filter full of oil. Just be sure you break it loose first before punching a hole in it if it’s on a truck you have not serviced. If you service it regular you will be ok because you know it was installed correctly.
