Bach's Cactus Nursery | Tucson, AZ | Epic plant shopping & greenhouse tour ft. rare specimens

- Bach's Cactus Nursery is one of my favorite nurseries of all time. They have a huge property with a large variety of cactus and succulents available and their inventory is constantly changing. Bach's is located on the north side of Tucson, the closest Tucson cactus nursery to my house - I find myself here every time I'm in the area. It's just a little too far away for me to visit all the time, which is probably a good thing for me (and my wallet).
Apologies to those of you who have commented that I move too fast in my videos, it's something I need to work on. I get overwhelmed when there are a lot of plants to cover because I want to show you everything but I also can't spend hours filming so I move a bit slower than my normal shopping pace which is still too fast for video. And I don't realize it until I play back the recordings during editing. Hopefully this is mostly watchable!
I hope you all are having a wonderful start to your holiday season. I know that holiday seasons are supposed to be all about cheer but that isn't always the case for everyone. For those of you who struggle through the holiday season, I hope this video can bring some joy or at least transport you into the desert for about an hour to take a mental break. Thank you all for all of your support since this channel started in May. I hope to continue bringing you more plant content in the future!

I know it's a bit early but the 2024 CACSS Show date and location are set! If you're in the Phoenix area, I highly recommend joining the society and entering some plants into the show - it's extremely fun. Or just come by and attend the show and see all the amazing plants - and maybe we'll run into each other! I'll be the gal with a camera wandering around talking to herself.

Hello my cactus friends! I've received a number of comments about the fast camera work in this video and I hear ya (I even apologize for it in the video at 1:55). This was the first time that I attempted to cover a humongous nursery with limited time and I was still very new to making videos (I still am, just over a year into the whole CZcams thing as an amateur with zero prior video-making experience). I'm still learning to hold the camera and move with the camera, as basic as that sounds. It's a very unnatural thing for me so I'm still practicing and, hopefully, steadily improving with time and experience. I think I do a better job in my B & B Cactus Farm video.
A recommendation from one of my viewers is to watch the video at 0.75x or 0.5x speed to catch the plants that I pan over too fast. I hope you can still enjoy the video in some way or other!
P.S. Some of the comments are on the harsh to very harsh side and it hurts my sensitive soul. Constructive criticism is welcome, especially if you have some basic tips and tricks that can help me improve.
I usually watch at 1.5 or 2x speed and I thought the video was perfectly fine. People must not realize they can just pause the video if they need to..
@@HumanBean520 I appreciate the comment! I never thought about the other side - viewers who want a faster pace. At least we have the playback speed option to pick something that suits us.
You are so humble and kind hearted and your verbal presentation of the different cacti nurseries that you visit. I can tell you have a true love for cactus species that you present in your videos.
May God bless you with a beautiful Cactus collection of your own .🙏🏼
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for the kind words! You made my day!
Wow! Enjoyed this tour so much! I've lived in Tucson 67 years and never knew this place was here!
@@bysender3481 omg you're so lucky to live in the same city as this incredible nursery! Definitely give it a visit when you have a chance (or when it's not so blazing hot)!
I plan to ~ it's on the way to Costco so I'll visit it once a month to feed my succulents addition!
Another excellent shopping tour. Thanks so much !
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the tour! Happy holidays!
Thanks Jenny! One of my favorite nurseries in Tucson when cactus crawling 🌵! Love it! 💚
You and me both, Tatiana! I love the changing inventory, always something new to find!
… ‘Cactus Crawling’. I love that 😂
"cactus crawling"- what a great term!
Thanks for the shopping tour video, Merry Christmas and also Cookie
Merry Christmas to you too, George! Cookie says "meow".
Bachs in legendary!!!
Agree! I watched your videos on the Arizona nurseries so many times! I hope you had a wonderful holiday, Hunter!
Agree! I watched your videos on the Arizona nurseries so many times! I hope you had a wonderful holiday, Hunter!
I use to go to this place they use to have a discount area, i got some super nice plants. Thanks so much for this show.
I heard that they have a discount area too - I think from Cactus Quest's video, but I keep forgetting to ask the employees where those tables are. You just reminded me that I need to ask next time! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment and reminder, Tom!
The mother plant house is amazing
I'm so glad you enjoyed the walk-through of their specimen house, Adrean! Every time I look at those plants I get impatient about wanting my plants to grow faster and reach that level of maturity... but it's futile LOL
Wow, what a marvelous nursery😃🥰🙏💞🌵
I'm so glad you enjoyed the tour, Vane! Lots of fun plants to look at at this nursery every time.
Their staff are so helpful, and when I purchase a plant and container, they will pot it up for me at no additional charge!
Totally agree, they're always super friendly and helpful!
Awesome video, Jenny. What an awesome place, too. Sorry I haven’t been very active on your videos lately, just so busy. Thank you for sharing with us. Have a wonderful day and Merry Christmas from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜
Thank you, Daz! Gosh I should be the one apologizing to you about not being active on your channel. With the winter break and some time off of work I thought I'd have more time to do more things but instead it feels like there's never enough time to do anything! I hope that you and Edith had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season!
Wow, so many huge cacti. I live in Alberta Canada, and we never see things like that ever. Very interesting.
Come visit Arizona! You'll have a blast!
Last 300 followers came quickly i bet your channel will grow alot this year, you deserve it that is for sure
Anders! It warms my heart reading your comment. Gosh you are so supportive of my channel, you don't know how much I appreciate it. It's like you're one of my closest family members paying attention to how this channel is doing. I appreciate you so much!
Also Living in the Phoenix metro, Bachs is my favorite cactus and succulent nursery to shop at when visiting Tucson!
Yay, hello fellow Phoenician! I love Bach's so much, never disappoints!
Omg I wish they sold online 😭 I love it 💚🌵
Me too! Then maybe I wouldn't have to drive 4 hours round trip to get plants LOL. I'm so glad you enjoyed the shopping trip!
Hey Jenny Cookie, 50,000 views, and 800 likes. Does anything make sense anymore???
Thank you for a stunning tour 😁

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Karsten! CZcams analytics is an interesting universe, something I don't think I'll ever understand 😂
What a nice walk through 💚
Merry Christmas from Austria 🎄🌟🌵
Merry Christmas from Arizona, Christina! I'm so glad you enjoyed the tour!
An absolutely wonderful video.💚 Astrophytum is my biggest favorite. I love its shapes and variants.💚👍🐈🐈
Best wishes from Germany🇩🇪🤝🇺🇲
I'm so glad you enjoyed this tour, Christof! You and me both - Astrophytum will always be a favorite. Such an amazing genus, so beautiful and so odd at the same time.
What a wonderful tour. Thank you.
I'm so glad you liked the shopping trip and tour of Bach's!
I can live here without internet and water for several days like cacti 🌵😀 . Thanks for sharing this awesome tour. Watching from india ✌️🤗
Ha! Me too! Thank you so much and hello from Arizona, Deepak!
Great Video! Loved the "dont touch that!" pointing at the Opuntia, so true x
Ha! Learned the hard way. Thank you so much, Els!
Incredible place! Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the tour, Cactus Dan! Happy new year!
Wow! I saw so many cacti varieties at that nursery😊🙏💖And they are all beautiful and healthy too! That Denmoza I'd buy in a heartbeat🥰The older cacti they have are fantastic! I enjoyed watching🙌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I'm so glad you enjoyed the shopping trip, Newman! It's always a treat to hunt for treasures at Bach's!
Loved the tour! Amazing cacti I would be out of pocket big time if I would go to this nursery. Do more. Happy New Year🎉
Happy new year, Mari! I'm so glad there's the 90 min buffer between me and Tuscon, otherwise my wallet will be completely empty!
Wow that is gorgeous thank you for sharing
Why thank you, Martha! I'm so glad you enjoyed the shopping tour at Bach's.
You’re doing great. I am really enjoying your videos.
Thank you so much, Kris! I'm so glad you enjoy these videos!
I love everything about your video!!!! Thank you for showing us and for adding their website so we can support their business from far away!!!❤
But sad because we can’t buy online!!
Awwwwww! Thank you so much! You made my night, Molly!
I know.... I would be constantly browsing their inventory online if they did. I think they're primarily a wholesale business, everything is old school.
Thank you for a great video! That really made my evening :) Aaand now I have to go buy more cacti tomorrow :D
I'm so glad you enjoyed this shopping trip, Thomas! Someone wrote that these shopping videos simultaneously satisfy the desire to go cactus shopping while also raising the insatiable appetite to buy more plants. I just found that to be so funny because it's true! I feel the same way watching plant shopping videos!
Wow people love cantos 🌵let's go buying pirates love natural turtles your love natural meetings very much trees Amazing on the world 🥰🥰👍wow....very beautiful 🌵Cantu's
Ohhh our love of cactus 💚💚💚🌵🌵🌵
beautiful cactus plants
They are such wonderfully strange things 💚🌵
Good review. Thank you very much.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! I miss going to this nursery - as soon as it cools down I think it's time for another trip.
The 1 gallon plants in the first greenhouse were incredible and for only $14 I would be in trouble lol
Great video👍
Right?! After I left I started having regrets about not taking home some of the gallon plants. There are other nurseries that carry the same gallon plants but none of them can beat Bach's price tag.
I'm working on a September trip to Tucson and had to rewatch this video. The propagation greenhouse is inspirationally incredible. Nice camera work and narration too!
Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I've received several comments on this video that I moved too fast, which I don't disagree with, but it's nice to get a positive comment 😊 It's September now! Are you still planning to take a trip to Tucson?
I'm looking at dates, probably the end of September before the snowbirds arrive!@@cookiescacti
I just love your videos I wish I could be there with you. I’d be taking photos.
But I can’t lie I’d be buying a few cacti small ones of cause maybe a few medium sized 😂.The pots they are gorgeous.Keep filming. Take an extra battery and an another sd card with you for your camera.🌵🌵🌵🤗🥰
Omg your comment just showed up and I saw it's 2 months old! You would have an absolute blast at this nursery! I hope you have a chance to visit someday! Happy new year, my friend!
Wow! The uebelmannias. And the Poas. Need to make a run! Great Video Jenny!
Good eye, James! I ended up getting my first Uebelmannia on this trip. Which reminds me, I need to make a winter plant haul video... I kinda went nuts buying plants again LOL
It’s so easy to say yes haha.
Awesome 👍
Thank you, Michelle! I'm so glad you enjoyed the tour!
I thought I was going to Tucson next month for the gem show but I’m definitely coming home with some cactus! I can imagine having to be told to leave at closing time at that place
Nothing better than gems and plants, Joshua! Have you been cactus shopping in Tucson before? There are so many good nurseries there.
It like christmas eve! I want one of them all
Me too, Anders! I want them all! It gets me on a kick to want more plants every time - I'm not sure if that's good or bad LOL
Oh my gosh, that place is amazing! I guess I should consider myself lucky that I'm not close enough to ever go there because I would get myself into so much trouble 🤣
LOL Heather! You and me both! Thank goodness I don't live in Tuscon, otherwise I'd be in such huge trouble!
@@cookiescacti if I lived there, I'd have to move away 🤣 but at least for you, the drive is long enough to deter you from going too often 🤣
@@the_plants_meow 🤣 I'm literally laughing out loud! You know, I used to wish that Phoenix had more cactus nurseries like Tuscon, I now rescind my wish LOLOLOL
@@cookiescacti I used to wish the same thing. I was always bummed that I had to put in hours of driving to get to a really cool cactus nursery, not anymore, now I'm thankful hahaha
@@the_plants_meow LOLOLOL 🤣🤣🤣 I'm glad we're on the same page. Happy new year, Heather!!
Thanks for sharing🇹🇹
You're very welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed the shopping trip, Annette! And hello from Arizona
Christmas to you and your family from Australia it Christmas eve in Australia
Merry Christmas to you and your family, Kaye! I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season!
Excellent video Jenny, I thank you for your effort. Camera movement and pace of the tour are quite acceptable in my opinion. There is one thing I would like to comment, however: considering size of the Bach's nursery there is very little variety, quite disappointing, really. In European nurseries one can find at least 10 times more species in a fraction of the space. One thing in particular is a mystery to me - there is none (or very little) of the Echinocerei on offer. If there is genus of cacti that would be perfect addition to a garden/rockery in your area, it would be Echinocereus - which are beautiful, forming eye-pleasing clumps and flowers in almost all of the species are stunningly beautiful. Then there is also very poor offer of South-americans (Rebutia, Sulcorebutia, Lobivia Weingartia...). And finally, there are practically no rarities on offer (Aztekium, Geohintonia, Ariocarpus, Pelecyphora, Turbinicarpus, etc.). After watching your video I realized that I couldn't find a single plant in the whole nursery that I'd want in my collection.
I apologize for my ramble and I wish you merry Christmas and happy New year.
Best regards,
Nino
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Nino! Thanks for the feedback on the camera movement, I have to fight my urge to rush because I'm usually an impatient person lol. That's an interesting comment about the size of the nursery and the plant offerings and it made me think about possible reasons. I could be wrong but I believe Bach's primary business is in their wholesale business, which means their space is so large because they sell in volume - it's the only way to support a 10 acre property. If I were to guess, their retail business is probably just a fraction of their revenue, which explains why they carry these types of plants - they are selling to the masses rather than the specialty cactus collectors, and what sells in volume determines what types of plants they have in stock. Just my guess though. One tell is that their retail parking lot is very tiny compared to the size of the property. In fact, I'm surprised they even offer the retail space and allow the public to come onto their property at all. Retail takes a lot of energy to run. The smaller nurseries in the area tend to have more variety and more of the more rare species of plants. I think you would be more interested in those nurseries. There's one in particular in Tuscon that I hope to record during my winter break.
You know, I always wondered how nurseries can make enough money to support employees' lives. High volume plants probably have low margins. Specialty plants have much higher margins but sell in low volume. Then they have to deal with disease and weather to yield enough healthy plants that look good enough to sell. I understand people growing and selling as a side hobby, but my goodness to do it professionally! I wish I could learn how these professional nurseries operate!
Those Melocactus for 14$ is crazy. I live in L.A and am considering driving to this nursery right now.
LOL do it! You'll have a blast! Especially before it gets ridiculously hot here.
I am so jealous that there is a lot of cactus available in Arizona at such cheap prices. I still don’t understand why there are no commercial growers of cactus in Vegas. Our supply comes mostly from California or Arizona. Thanks for the tour, Jenny. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉!
Happy new year, Ana! That is an interesting observation about the lack of commercial growers in Las Vegas... I wonder why? I would think the climate would is well suited for growing many species and there should be a market for landscape plants and such in the area. I hope you have a chance to check out the nurseries in Arizona at some point (if you haven't already). I think you'd have a blast especially in Tuscon where there are many more specialty cactus nurseries available to the public.
It gets too cold here
Another amazing video.. and not her nursery to add to my itinerary! Thank you!,

Yes!! Tucson nurseries to visit if you have time: Bach's, Plants for the Southwest, B&B Cactus Farm, Arid Lands. Are you bringing a truck 😁?
I’m flying out to Phoenix, then renting a Suburban!, 😂 and driving home with my haul of cacti 🌵!
… and yes, ALL of those nurseries are on my list~ thanks to your amazing videos!
Hello Dear Cacti :) it is so beautiful to travel around and watch all those amazing plants :)
Thank you 😍
And, can you please tell us also about the ages of the cactis while you make us wondering around 😇
I'm so glad you enjoy these videos! I wish I knew the ages of the cactus myself, I would be terrible at guessing besides "old" or "young" based on the size of the plant since the age information is not included with the plants.
Awfully cute you going to see if the older cactus have been sold
Dawwwww... those old plants are my favorite to visit. They're like old friends. I hope they find forever homes some day but at the same time I love seeing when they are still there.
Мечта погулять в таком магазине 😊
It is so much fun to go plant shopping here. At least you're able to shop with me virtually!
My favorite line...if there was not a 1 1/2 hour buffer between my house and Tucson, I would be in huge trouble! No doubt! I live in Ohio....whaa!
Ha! I used to be jealous of Tucson's amazing nurseries, now I'm thankful. I can't even imagine what would've happened if there wasn't that 90-120 min buffer. Are there cactus nurseries in Ohio?
@@cookiescacti I only have about two dozen cacti, but plenty of other succulents like gasteria, aloe, haworthia and sansevieria. The nurseries around here have few offerings, so I have to get most of my plants from online sources. It's fun shopping, nonetheless. I'm taking note of what opens your eyes. I have a number of rebutia, mammillaria, gymnocalycium, copiapoa and a few other things. I have to grow them indoors for 6 months out of the year, so they have to be the smaller varieties. The cacti are all dormant right now-they live in front of some west facing windows are the cooler lower level. The gasteria and haworthia get the prime upstairs windows. Ohio is a gloomy state right now.
Imagine trying to leave this place with one cactus 😂
Impossible, Sean!
Your doing a great job honey
Awwwww thank you so much for this 💚💚💚
Your welcome. I feel the same way on camera so I know how you feel but your doing really good. We are always harder on ourselves. @@cookiescacti
Muito lindo ❤❤❤❤
Right back at you! Thank you!
To be honest I've been getting a wide variety of small cacti and succulents at Home Depot for only a few bucks. Of course the retail employees in that store no nothing but if you go in with knowledge you can really save a bundle.
Oh yeah, Home Depot is great! Many of my OG plants were purchased from Home Depot, excellent prices and sometimes you can find some absolute treasures. I still go do the rounds every once in a while to see what's new in inventory.
@@cookiescacti The last plants I got there were purple split rocks, Mexican fire barrels, and a Monstrose cactus.
@@ProgressiveDiscussions Some very nice treasures for sure!
Summer Rayne has excellent camera work on tours. If you study her technique that might help.
Goals to aspire to for sure. How did you know I've been studying other videos? 😉
Miss, if possible, in the name tag section, don't be in a hurry because I want to screenshot the name of the type of cactus. I like the videos when Miss goes around the cactus shop because we can learn and memorize the names of cacti... your videos are very useful, Thank you very much Miss
Hello! I'm so glad you enjoy these nursery videos! Unfortunately, with hundreds of different plant labels it isn't possible for me to show the labels on everything - it would require hours of filming which I cannot do. Hopefully you're able to catch some of the labels by pausing the video. This is the best I can do!
Wow ,,
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour!
Great video, just subscribed. But the video quality could be vastly improved by using the stabilization in most editing software. Also, if your camera has the hability, try recording in 60fps.
Thank you so much for the feedback, Julio! Unfortunately, the editing software I'm using doesn't have a stabilization feature. There are other major limitations with this software that's making me consider trying something different once my subscription expires. Do you have recommendations for video editing software? Something affordable and easy to use would be awesome. I'm already recording in 1080/60fps but I'm using a cheap camcorder. I jumped into this CZcams thing head first with whatever I had on hand :)
Have you ever been to plants for the SW or arid lands greenhouses?
I've been to both! Plants for the SW many times, only once to Arid Lands and I only got 15 minutes to shop because they closed early due to excessive heat warnings. Plants for the SW is next on my video list, just waiting for the weather to allow being outside for an extended amount of time - almost there.
4:23, are those two different kinds of white bunny ear cactus? Cause one looks completely white while the other looks more green with white dots.
I think they're the same kind of opuntia, but I could be wrong. It's always fascinating to see how much a single species of plant can vary in terms of looks!
Im getting into cacti and succulents after killing the one i had for like 2 years not knowing what i was doing 😂
I'm on my way to having a problem (have maybe 12 cacti right now and 10 succulents with another 30 attempting to root) once i attempt my first round of a few dozen seeds.
I love so many different kinds but for some reason one that REALLY calls to me is the Tephro's with the super flat/thick spines. I think the single plant I allowed myself to indulge in while buying seeds (i narrowed that down from maybe 10 live plants and 100+ species seeds haha) was a Tephro Alexanderii or something. Might never be as skilled/anal about the genus/species identification but a gal can dream, right? 😂
I love this! And I get your love for Tephros, such amazing and strange plants. Give into the madness, my friend 😁😁😁 it only gets deeper lololol
What kinda plant person are you? The one who buys everything even though they know they shouldn't cause they ran out of space a year ago or are you the more sensible one😄
This is such a good question, omg.... I feel like I'm a mix of both and I lean towards one end or the other depending on the time of year LOL! Now I'm cheating by moving some of the plants to other areas in the yard or putting more plants in the ground so it feels like I suddenly have more space, and the additional space must be filled! How about you?
My 1st consideration is space. Vertical and horizontal and how it will grow. I'm not an impulsive buyer.
Good video, good collection. How can you buy all this? Where is the site?
I'm glad you enjoyed this! I don't think Bach's has an online shop. The only way that I know of to purchase plants is to buy in person. It's worth giving them a phone call to check though. I think I have their website included in the video description.
Thank you very much
Are those little 'trees' at 28:05 the Aloes bloom?
Yes, they are, Derryn! Aren't they spectacular?
I would be out of my mind at a nursery like this. Prices were very reasonable. Do you know if they ship?
Right?? Always super fun to shop their inventory. I'm not sure if they ship. I have a feeling they don't but it's worth sending an email to them to ask. My guess is that their primary business is in wholesale, which would explain why the property is so large.
Biaaaboila. Bílá. . .
.....
Hello! I am trying to use Google translate, but I can't figure it out! I hope saying "thank you" is suitable here!
Wow, $14 is a great price for those.
Right?? It makes me so tempted to go back but I really cannot have any more plants at this point!
it kills me that they can't just include lophophoras. a spineless cactus would be so popular.
Yeah, it's really too bad that regulations work this way. And the fact that some cactus are allowed and some aren't

Yes, I'm trying to improve on that. Really sorry about it. I'm still very new to making videos

Yes, I'm sorry about that. I've gotten feedback from others with the same comment. I'm a complete amateur at making videos and I'm really limited in equipment, time, and editing software. I try to be conscious of it but it's really challenging. Thanks for giving it a try though!
