How I made grungy painted papers from my failed eco printing experiment!

- My eco-printing paper FAIL and how I rescued it: art failures are never wasted!
Join me on my attempt to try eco-printing on paper, see how I completely failed, and then how I rescued my project at the end! I will tell you all about my eco-print intentions and what went wrong- we will learn some valuable lessons together (I think that art failures are never wasted!).

Last year, from April to December, I tried eco printing at least once a month just to see what changed with experimentation and season. I even took notes! You’re right that fresh plants and flowers will make a massive difference! I am not a “tidy” artist and enjoy this relaxed form of printing. I have pages of grunge but also some stunning sheets of colour and form. Well done for keeping going, because it can be frustrating. The one thing I can promise is that it is always an adventure, even sheet to sheet in the same batch. Just have fun!
Thank you for your comment 😊 I wonder whether I was a bit harsh with myself calling it a ‘fail’ when I did actually like the results in the end! It was fun to experiment and it certainly won’t be the last time I try this technique. Now that spring is springing it’s nearly time to try it again 🙂 What a great idea to try it in different seasons and see what changes- and super good plan to take notes!!

I can see you creating your own stencil with one of your distressed paper fabric sheets. For a concise, easy-to-follow tutorial for eco-dying, check out Nik The Booksmith. For the rose petals, Jibid Neary has a tutorial on creating an eco-dye look without the actual eco-dying process. Both these ladies are very talented artists, but you may already be familiar with their work! You could also incorporate the rose petals in a collage or decoupage onto a frame and then put your wedding picture in the frame. My own eco-dying adventures have been underwhelming to say the least!

Another very enjoyable video. I completely understand your disappointment, as the creator, at the papers not turning out how you envisaged - but as someone just watching, I can see they do have their own beauty.
The muted colours just give that understated, elegant look - I love them. It’s so good to see someone going on similar adventures to me - and I love the way you share the journey with the ups and downs you encounter in your experiments.
The adventures I have like this are in the times when I want to get away from making videos and just lose myself in trying stuff just for my own enjoyment, so I totally understand how disappointing ‘failures’ are. I have LOADS of those! But watching you work and seeing how you deal with what you see as ‘failures’ is very mentally liberating and refreshing.
Your attitude to your art journeys is reminding me that the doing is the important part. The results will always give you something, even if it’s not what you wanted. Next time I have an arty play session, I’m going to be bolder, more appreciative of ‘failures’ and more imaginative of ways to turn around the pieces I really don’t like.

Thank you for your comment. I am glad you got out of it what I hoped I was putting across- that the enjoyment of the process is what it’s all about. So although it’s nice if you end up with something you like, it doesn’t matter if it turns out badly. You can change it: paint over it, cut it up, turn it into something else. Or you have learnt something and had fun and you can try again or take what you learnt into something else. I love how you say it’s an adventure! That’s how I see it too- nothing really to lose, the stakes are low, so just enjoy the ride! I think in retrospect I was maybe a bit harsh and overly self critical in this video but it took me by surprise how things turned out. I thought it was good to show how you can be disappointed with the results and still get something you’re happy with if you roll with it!
@@RoseWildsmith I actually got a blank journal out after the video and have started three pages. It’s been so long since I’ve done that. That’s the upside of the internet - getting encouragement from someone miles away across the North Sea. Thank you! 😀

I have tried eco dying and haven’t had much success. I sprayed them when they were dry with some colour but I think I liked your fix better. I learned a lot from your mistakes and it is spring here now (Canada) so I will try again with fresh botanicals. This was great. I really enjoyed your quiet manner, it was relaxing to watch. ❤️

Totally not a fail, love how the stencils looked on the paper. Eco dying is really fun but takes a bit of experimenting. I found my best results have come from pre soaking the paper with an allum mixture and baking at a low heat in the oven for a while 😄
Aw thanks and thank you for the tips, baking in the oven sounds interesting 😳🔥 I also hear that people boil or steam their bundles. Will definitely give it another go sometime soon!
@@RoseWildsmith ..like I said takes a lot of experimentation, I tried the boiling at first but didn't get the results I wanted.. it worked well for natural dying of things tho. I'm looking forward to doing it again this year, just waiting for the flowers and leaves to come. Another tip that I have picked up is to use mat photo or media paper, seems that has the best results and seems to soak up the colour better and not disintigrate so much 😄.

Maybe you can try Junk Journals with the beautiful papers. See 49dragonflies or Two Old Crows mixed media.
In my limited experience with eco dyeing I felt it was better to just use the leaves and flowers, with plain liquid and mordant. Rather than using tea or dyes. In the first stage. Then, like you did, play with the papers afterward.

I would love to make some of that stuff with the acron tops, do you have a video on it?
I don’t actually but I am thinking of making one - I think I did film the process so if I can dig out the footage I’ll see whether I can put it together into a video 😀
When I have eco dyed I boil the papers for an hour or more and use more Alum. I have watched many hpw to videos and they always boil or steam bundles of papers and fabric.
Yes this has been my experience too unkess you are using solar dyeing.
I agree I didn’t really have a clue 😆 I am going to have another go at some point!
