  • I try out a technique inspired by Shelley Rhodes to distress paper by sewing it and rubbing parts away to create a paper- fabric mesh.
    The book I mention:

    LOVE this! Can I just say how I appreciate you giving credit to the original artist? So refreshing! I often see a video and there is no mention of who created the technique or where it was learned, as if the presenter invented it out of thin air.

    • @RoseWildsmith
      @RoseWildsmith  Před rokem +8

      Oh yes I would feel awful if I didn’t credit the artist I got the idea from. I hope people would do the same for me in that situation too. We have to support each other!

    Update! I tried this technique with the paper towel. It took me an hour to find the pretty towel I knew I had somewhere in my art hoard. Took another hour to sew and rub the paper away. It turned out beautifully. Now I have 6 more paper towels soaked with coffee drying to make more. Love this idea. Thanks so much.

    Really enjoyed this video, thank you. It reminded of using same technique I discovered through my own experimental play years and years ago. The technique wasn't new then and it's not new now but I loved the moment I 'discovered it' just through exploration. It's great when textile artists like Shelly, and yourself of course, share techniques like this so we can all be reminded of them or even better, discover them for the first time. I have Shelly's book... loads of brilliant ideas in there and reminders of some I need to revisit. I feel a grid coming on... it's been a while..

    • @RoseWildsmith

      You're right, it's so fun to 'discover' new techniques. Shelly's book is amazing isn't it, so rich with ideas. Every time I pick it up I find something new! Thanks for watching :)

    That uses a process akin to Momigami by which the crumpling can both be used as a strengthener and softener for more robust papers and to degrade as in this case. Features also in The Found Object in Textile Art. Shelley's authenticity of the technique shines through as oart of the process specific to her approaches in creating work.

      @@RoseWildsmith I equally love Shelley's work. and the process so fits in with here concept and ideas. There is a also a three page description of these processes in my first book The Found Object in Textile Art 2010. Momigami is a process a discovered whilst studying papermaking and textiles in Japan in the early eighties. It means 'kneaded paper' and used as a textile cloth called Kamiko. Hope you do not mind me mentioning for a bit of history and context.

    Fabulous video - Thank you. I must get that book too. I had a thought though, could you sew onto paper towel first and then die it, the cotton would match everytime whatever colours die the paper.? I ask because I don't have lots of various threads 🙂

    • @RoseWildsmith
      @RoseWildsmith  Před rokem +1

      I haven’t tried that myself but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work! Just make sure you use cotton thread as polyester thread won’t take the dye. The cotton thread might dye at a different rate to the paper too, so you might end up with slightly different colours anyway, but I think that having contrasting colours would be an alternative and cool look!
