Oh my! I didn't even realize this had a name. My friends and I used to make 'fabric' with our lined paper in high school in the early 80's. I guess the paper back then had a higher cotton content. We would do this in math class when we were bored. No oil or anything, we would just keep crinkling the paper over and over and OVER again until it was no longer paper. I think it would be neat to write on the paper first and use this as a way to 'preserve' the image of the writing/message. Oh, and I have the perfect steel button for your layered project! ;)
What a great thing to do in Math class! It probably did have a higher rag content.. and I am so glad you have my button!! 😘
We did the same thing, @carolinesmercantile4290
I love this technique and your stitching. I will have to give this a go.❤

Wow! Talk about unlocking an OLD memory - we used to do this to notebook paper in class when I was in middle school in the 80s!! We just did it because we were bored - it wasn’t taught as a technique and we didn’t have a name for it.
Yes.. and it’s an actual art technique!
Wonderful technique with paper.
Thank you!!
Love this so much thank you for sharing

Thank you, I will try this. It's neat.
I learned something wonderfully new! So calming. I always need to keep my hands busy. Internet, art, FB, Pinterest. We are super multitaskers.
Me too👍🏻💪🏻
Love the effect of the crumpling - and adding stitching is really inspiring. Thank you! Watching in Tasmania 😊
TFW!! We so appreciate it!! 😘
I had never heard of this technique. I love the results and it does look like fun and meditative to do. Going to try this. Thank you, Cat.

Interesting technic thank you for sharing wonderful idea ❤❤❤🎉💖💝🤗
Thanks for watching! 😘
Nice to have you back Cat...thank you very much for this lovely arty demonstration.....I l-o-v-e it and a great idea to in a journal..Blessings
Hi Marinda, Thanks so much, trying to get back into the swing!! Glad you L O V E love it!!!
Beautiful 😍 thank you!
Thanks for watching!!
This is SO COOL! I have several papers from scrapbooking that I absolutely love - so much so that I’ve ‘saved’ them for years 😬 - but this technique will allow me to turn them into fabric, do some slow stitching, and make them into journal covers! ❤️🥰 Thank you for this!
Great! Glad you liked it!
This is new to me…I just tried it with ordinary hand cream and a newspaper picture …it turned out great. I have an interesting image to add to my next project. I love that it has a name …makes it seem much more “arty”… Can’t wait to try it with larger and more complicated papers, perhaps draw on the paper first…or after …lots of fun ahead.
Wonderful!! So glad you are enjoying it and the technique IS an art technique.. enjoy.
Thank you so much! Inspirational!
Thank you!! 😘
Fascinating! I have never seen anyone smush up watercolor paper before! After I finished watching, I happened upon a piece of watercolor paper that had lost its sizing and had an aha moment! It folded and rolled and crinkled up beautifully! I finally have something to do with papers that have gone bad! Not sure I will want to use the side with the funky fish on it. Next I will have to rewatch the video to refresh my memory on how to put this together! Seriously fun!
So glad you enjoyed it and tried it! 😘
This was fascinating, Cat. I shared with my daughter who is an art quilter. How freeing this is! Thank you for explaining how it is done.
So glad you liked the video, Diane!! Thanks for watching and sharing!!
Thank you so much for doing this video! This was something we did in grade school, but I had no idea what a true art form it could be. I immediately grabbed a gorgeous page from a Daphne’s Diary magazine and turned it into “fabric”. My mind is going crazy with the possibilities!
Glad you enjoyed it!! 😘
Love it! Thanks for showing us this technique dear one 🙏❤️ VB xx
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you, dearheart ♥️😘
Beautiful
Thank you!!
I loved seeing your creative process! And like a lot of others commenting here, I didn’t know that this process of fiddling with and “worrying” paper had a name. Therapeutic and beautiful results. Great tutorial! 💕❤️💕
I am so glad that everyone enjoyed this video. I agree it is very therapeutic.. ♥️😘
Yet one more craft/medium to add to my long list of "want to try this". I just love learning new things!
Wonderful!! Thanks for watching!!
Congratulations on your move to Co! TFS!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!!
Great to see you again .. loved the lesson and so good to hear you:) always motivated by you!
Awww 🥰 thank you dearheart! 😘
I enjoyed your process for the papers. Your style of art making is so fluid and relaxed. Thanks. I imagine that your home must be a warm soothing place. I found your Amazon links and was thrilled to see the decile edge rulers. It’s been hard to get my hands on good ones. Now I have found it. Thanks again. Good luck on your new home settling in. ❤
Hi Helen!! Thank you so much! I love those rulers! Glad you saw them! We are still doing things to our home 🏡 there is so much to do to make it ours! Glad you enjoy my art style! Thank you!! 😘
Certainly have missed your informative and lovely videos. Best of luck in Colorado 💜
Thank you, Penelope! We love it here!! 😘
I love this idea! I've missed you!
Thanks for Missing Me!! Happy you liked it!!
Hi Cat and Don. This is a really stunning technique, and one I had never heard of previously. I really loved the neutral colored one that you did first. Especially that little piece of mystery card board(?) in the very center! This is so cool, and then the added stitches at the end. Just an amazing use of papers and fibers. Thanks to you both!
Hi Lynn! Ohh so glad to introduce you to it then!! That piece is my favorite too!! Great minds!! 😘
I discovered this technique by chance and kept doing it using all kinds of paper , only recently discovered it was a Japanese technique called monogamist. I have printed beautiful flowers onto photocopy paper , crumpled it and used the flares on quilts along with fabric flowers, no one realized that some of the flowers were paper, never oiled my papers
A monogamist is a person who is committed to loving one person exclusively 😂whoa your spellcheck is off 😂 the teacher is teaching
The results looked beautiful. I look forward to trying this while sitting still at night😀 Thanks for sharing. Another use for Coconut oil.
I adore it too!!thank you Julie!! 🤗😘
I just recently learned about momigami and I love it and I l-o-v-e your videos!
Hi Kathleen! You aren’t in FoCo anymore? Glad you L O V E love them! 😘
I just found you and oh how fun! I have never heard of this but know it’s something I will enjoy. 🌸
It’s so funny.. I just did this video as a lark.. but it sure is popular!! 😘
Hello Dear One - how lovely to watch your video. Like someone said prior - I didn’t know squishing paper like this had a name - thank you for the lesson!!! I will absolutely do this!!! I LOVE THE NAME OF IT!! Much love to you 🥰 Rella
Hi sweet Rella!! How exciting to find you here!! Glad you like the little video!! And the name… I can’t take credit for but it’s charming isn’t it? 🥰
As soon as I saw this I had to give it a go. I used a magazine, quite therapeutic. Loved the look. Thanks for showing us
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!! 😘
Buy a set of wireless Bluetooth headphones. I use mine so as not to disturb others.
Love this technique! I remember doing this in elementary art class but don't remember what we did with it. I tried it using a piece of scrapbook paper and coconut oil and it turned out beautifully. But did get a few holes. I have boxes of scrapbook paper that I was ready to give away now I have a purpose for it. Can't wait to try stitching on it!
That’s wonderful, Brenda! We are all really enjoying the process! Thank you!
So enjoyed your video. This technique was first introduced to me by Robyn McClendon - both of you are mixed media and book maker artists. So different in styles but both of you are so satisfying and I learn so much. Thank you.
Thank you! Yes, I have heard of her! Glad you liked our video!
Blessed to have stumbled across your video... just subscribed and ft collins is about an hour from me! I remember this technique was introduced to me back in elementary school almost 50 yrs ago! It's one of the few memories I have from then and it's has fluttered across my mind a couple of times. What a blessing to have found your video this morning! I will be adding this to my crafting and very thankful you shared so much wonderful information. Thanks to your cameraman as well!!
Hi Michelle.. so glad you liked the video.. yes.. I think most of us tried it in school.. we have over 100 video to watch.. hope you enjoy them! We are making shorts now.. so you might like those too! I am in the process of leaving my gallerie.. but I will be taking appointments for people who are local to visit my home studio and having an annual studio tour! Thanks for watching!! 😘
Thank you... maybe someday I can cross your path! 🤗
Thanks Cat for sharing how you do Momigami, I have used Jojoba oil but will try the coconut next time. Fun watching and love the slow stitching … 💖💖
Really any oil will work… glad you enjoyed it, Shirley! 😘♥️
I was having trouble sleeping when I found this video. I couldn’t have sound on because hubby was asleep. This helped. I closed my eyes and pretended I was making ‘fabric’ from paper. Thanks for sharing. It is kind of cool!
It IS cool! Thanks for sharing with me! 😘
Thank you very interesting xx
New to your videos!! Love how ye explain the process !! I've done a project like this with brown paper and diluted hair conditioner!! Was fun, so I'm moving on to this !! Thanks very much !! 🎉❤
Wonderful!!😘
Love this technique Cat 🥰 I tried it with magazine pages too
Hi Eva!! Yes.. and pages.. any oils pretty fun! 😘
Hi Cat and Don! So happy to see a new video from you guys!!
Funny how a couple weeks ago I learned about momigami in someone's YT video, and now I see it on your channel! I have "researched" the technique and watched a few videos since first hearing about it, but I never saw anyone using coconut oil... I love how you get a completely different look when you add the paint! Thanks for showing us both pieces for comparison.
I never thought of using any oil, but I use water. I just had this idea because I'm very impatient and always try to find ways to get things done a little faster, especially when I want to try a new technique 😄
The water definitely makes the paper more fragile and vulnerable, but I don't really mind because I don't mind a few rips.
Looking forward to seeing more videos soon!! 🤗💕
Hi Nathalie! Well.. it seems to be making the rounds.. but that’s fine.. glad you liked it and water or other oils will definitely work too! 😉😘♥️
Oh! I hope my comment didn't upset you, Cat!! I really didn't mean anything bad when I mentioned seeing the momigami technique in someone else's video. I just find it funny 😄
And seeing your video reminded me of the technique and made me feel like playing with my paper bits again... sending you big hugs!! 🤗💕
@@nathaliet.3985 oh no! It didn’t.. It’s a great technique.. glad you saw it elsewhere too! 😘
Hi Caterina we are missing you need more of Caterina please love Angela x
Hi Angela!b well I am on Facebook and IG daily.. so hop over to those channels!! ♥️😘
Thanks!
You're back. I'm so glad. :)
Yes!! We are!! Thank you so much!! 😘
Wow, great video. I've learned about this technique and zine's today. I didn't know, what I didn't know lol.
Thank you!! 😘
So cool! It’s amazing that the khadi paper can be wrinkled like this! I am going to try this one. Thanks for sharing! Your videos have such great content.
What a lovely comment!! Thank you!
I've just discovered your channel Cat and hello from the UK - love what you do and can't wait to have a go. I've done something similar but not used the coconut oil. :) x
Thank you!! The oil helps the paper’s stretch and thanks for watching!! 😘

Thank you, Taylor.. we miss you too!
Can't wait to see you guys again
@@Itsjusttaylor07 in September
Wait really I can't wait
Thanks for your great video and give me some ideas on what I can do with my momigami papers :)
Glad you like it! 😘
I love the aspect of mixed media…nice. I bought a bag of random mixed media sold from my local art store for some reason that escapes me. This gives me more ideas though, thanks❣️🙋🏻♀️👍🏽Mia
Wonderful 😘
This is a wonderful technique thanks for sharing with us. How does the coconut oil react with the paper over time or react with cloth sewn onto it? I guess I'll have to experiment.
I haven’t noticed a change.. we shall see!
Hey, nice to see you and hear Don again. It's been a while, missed you. Lovely, inspiring lesson today. Love your esthetic. I've done this with other papers, need to try the khadi paper, I think I will really like that.
Thank you! Yes, the Khadi is great texture!!
Thx Cat!
Most welcome! 🙏🏻
Nice! Fun! Really love it! I wonder what would happen if you would wet the paper thoroughly first before you start crunching. Think it will go well with pressed florals and greenery.
Then you would be making handmade papers.. 😉
MORE Please!
Wow, interesting to use the coconut oil in the paper. I love using craft paper for projects, now I will try the coconut oil to give it that soft feel. Interesting how the paper without oil, shows absorption in the folds, presumably where the fibers are compromised by folding. But the oiled paper blends color better. Must be the oil seals the whole surface so color is more evenly distributed. Interesting. ~Mr Paris
Hi Mr. Paris! Yes! I agree! I thought the oil would inhibit the paint.. but it didn’t.. very interesting!
@@CaterinaGiglio Yes I thought it would be a problem for the paint also. Apparently not! Yeay for us!
After watching your video, I had to try this! I found I preferred the lighter weight papers over the thicker ones. Painter's paper worked really well.
Did you try Khadi paper? Glad you tried it!
