The Truth About Contra Operation Galuga on Switch | Nintendo Switch Demo Review
#switchcorner #contra #nintendoswitch - Hry
Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing! Did anyone else feel that the game just doesn't feel right, it's not responsive enough, or at least, that's the case on Switch, what I saw on PlayStation was much better!
bro i dont mean to sound funny but i could feel the pain in your voice. i agree with you 100%. im waiting for more reviews from you and switchup.
PS5 might be better but on PS4 it's the same, control has big latency, runs at 30fps too. It doesn't feel great at all. I'm having a hard time believing this was made by Wayforward, seeing how perfect Contra 4 was.
@@Rupix15 agreed 100 percent! I expect so much more from wayforward
I just finished playing the demo on Switch and agree completely. Hitching caused a couple of deaths and the input repsonse is subpar. The 30fps is also disappointing, especially after having recently put a large amount of time into Sky Force Reloaded, which runs at a smooth 60fps. Not quite the same since that game has vertical auto-scrolling levels, but it's still proof that Switch is capable of 60fps graphics on this style of game.
I'll have to pass on this one even though it was a highlight of the Partner Direct. Thank the gaming gods for demos.
The Switch is definitely capable of 60fps for this level of graphics. I mean the recent release of Prince of Persia runs at 60 on the Switch. heck even Metroid Dread (which imo looks way better than Contra) runs flawlessly at 60.
The control lag has everything to do with the bad frame rate
Nah thats two separate issues.
@@functionatthejunction no
We need Contra 4 on switch that game was👊😍🔥🔥
we need Contra 4 on every platform if possible XD
love that game to death haha
contra was better in 2d. These 3d graphics look like a phone game.
@@wildwest1832 true👍
@@Rupix15 😄👍
Yes. Also hardcorp uprising and Contra Shattered soldier.
My biggest problem with the game is it's a 50$ cost. Honestly it doesn't feel like it should cost that much.
Euugh!! Yeah. It's too damn expensive! 😣
50 in Canada, 40 in the states
@@NicholasBouchard 40 is still to much but looking at eShop Contra rogue corp's is also 40$.
@@UndeadEggmiester$40
@@UndeadEggmiester Yikes $40 seems way too much for what this is. I am not a person that thinks 2D games are not worth $40, as I would gladly pay $60 for PoP - The Lost Crown, the Ori games etc if they cost that much. But this game really looks cheap. Hopefully I am wrong as I loved the original Contra games.
I agree about the lag when jumping. I downloaded the demo on switch. When u press the jump button, there is a little lag between pushing the jump button and the jump happening. It is a little frustrating
The original Contra and Super C are the only good games. I don't know why people think any that came out after that were any good.
@snwrist_3 I agree. Those were by far the best. Alien wars on super nintendo wasn't too bad, but yes, I agree with you 100% on that
I actually didn't mind contra 4 too much. But super c is my favorite@@snwrist_3
Solid review and appreciate the comparison/breakout between platforms, thank you for this.
There aren't any missing animations, it's just with how quick the game is, you need to perform very quick actions like going prone or aiming in whatever direction when avoiding projectiles just like the old Contra games. So movement feels immediately responsive when ducking for cover.
The lag is noticeable and Lead to many deaths. Hope this is resolved prior to official release
@jack??? You're soooooo right Homie,,,
I knew I wasn't tripping....I have it on PC and i was like Damn?
I can't run this Mobile game...all the Microstutters and Lost imputs!!!
I am going to go back to Contra Collection
Well, that truly is unfortunate. CONTRA has been one of my favorite titles since my childhood. I really hope they can improve on it.
Playing this on any other version would be ideal over the Switch version. I played the demo on PC and it's fine.
I played the demo earlier today and really liked it overall. Really handled like an updated version of the original on NES (which is of course legendary!). However, I did notice strange frame rate issues as well.
Now, I’m a D-pad diehard and one thing that was really cool!:
You can choose “8-way” directional controls and use your D-pad on your (hopefully Pro Controller or in my case Nitro Deck), controller but still use BOTH the analog stick OR D-pad anytime depending on the situation you’re in within the game!
I noticed that “frame(s) missing” thing sometimes depends on if you’re using the analog stick OR D-pad! When ducking/standing using the D-pad, it skips frame(s) just like the old school NES Contra, but using the analog ADDS frames to the animation when you duck/stand up! I think that’s REALLY cool. I’m assuming it’s intentionally skipping the frames to match the old-school NES feel.
But, yeah.. the frame rate issues overall are a thing as of now, and the presentation has a rather “mobile game” look to it, for sure.
Hopefully more “patches”(🙄) can at least help the frame rate?
Great video Switch Corner!
Thank you. I am a diehard D-Pad on side scroller guy as well. That was my biggest gripe on Metroid Dread, an otherwise great game.
I thought I was crazy when I felt that the controls were sluggish. Glad to know I’m not the only one experiencing that.
Any difference on Switch handheld vs docked? Thanks, i hadnt got to this demo yet.
Tried to play the switch demo and it wouldnt get past the loading screen on the first level. It wasnt frozen just kept loading for a few minutes without finishing. Tried it on the PS5 though and loved it.
Anyone else notice that it's side scrolling on a curve? It's very slight but you can notice the curvature near the edges.
It's great
I did not until your comment. That is pretty cool
😂
100%
I think after an update this game will run good. Blazing chrome is a good run n gun.
I think I'm just gonna buy Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection instead. It drops on the same week as Contra, but battlefront is gonna drop on Thursday, March 14th.
Nice video.. I did play demos on Switch and PS5.. I will definitely buy the PS5 version but will wait for a sale. I think $40.00 is too much
It’s going to be cleared up by release. I’m certain they built all the other versions first and Switch version last, and it’s not done.
Well they don't have long, 14 days and counting for release
Hmmm this looks fun. I hope the will fix the issues?
I appreciate you doing the comparison. I wanted for the switch but for this price i need it smooth. Im getting it on ps5
💯 agree. "Sluggish" and "delay" were the exact words I used to describe it. However, I was overall more impressed than disappointed. The difficulty options and arcade mode gave me some solace from the usual slapstick circus we get from some contra installments. It's really kind of bizarre to me that any developer would end up with this level of input lag on a contra and think it's okay to release. I'd be embarrassed. Also the visuals aren't even on par with something like Donkey Kong Country Returns, so I can't think of an excuse for the framerate, or especially the diminished textures and such. It feels more like the work of a rookie team's first project with an engine they don't know how to use.
You're spot on with the Switch performance! Thought it was in my head.
Honestly, had a feeling this was the case as the videos they showed for this game just looked off and studdering. 30 FPS, no, Ghost N Goblins Resurrection runs at 60 FPS and is doing way more. So I wonder if Blazing Chrome is on sale?
Contra is the Sonic of run and gun games. They almost always feature the same first stage, feature little evolution in gameplay, and rely on nostalgia.
On STEAM I can set the game to 120hz, is that available on the Switch?
There isn't a single game on Switch that has a 120hz option.
I felt the minute control lag on the Switch version, too, in comparison with the tight PS4 demo version
seriously. i'm on PS4 and i feel the PS4 demo has a big input delay already. so you're saying it's even worse on the switch? damn..
I'm on rog ally, it runs amazing. Nintendo is always the weakest system
@@RT-bt5qldon't start that. This isnt on the hardware. This is bad optimization.
@@TonyJennIt’s factual that Switch is the weakest but with that said the Switch should be able to run on this at 60FPS no problem without much lag, hopefully it does get fixed since it does look fun
@@RT-bt5qlThe only home consoles that Nintendo ever released, that weren’t the pinnacle of power on that date, were the Wii, Wii U and Switch, but Switch is a hybrid, so it’s not the same. Every other console was the strongest.
Thanks for the video. Im excited for this game. I downloaded the demo for PS5… I played it for abit and enjoyed it alot. A great remake of the og Contra and from Way Forward... I was gonna order a physical of the switch build. Then I saw this video... Why 😢... This is a perfect game for the Switch.
Downloading the Switch Demo now..
They should just re release hard corps uprising.
I still boot up my PS3 from time to time to play Uprising. Such a fun and hard game.
Is it download only game? Will it come in a switch card?
There's a current pre-order physical version on card for Switch through Limited Run Games.
Played this demo more than any other
Anyone know how the PS4 version is?
Played the demo on PS5 and encountered none of the issues you describe (felt good to me!). Curious to try it on Switch to compare.
PS5 version is pretty solid, if you play it on Arcade with 1-hit kills. It feels like the meatiest contra yet in terms of game play mechanics(Dashing, double jumping, super weapon attacks). Visuals are...Fine, nothing special. If anything, the soundtrack has been disappointing and not as energetic, unique or original as i would of liked.
@@80sHolic7 Agreed, felt great to me. Double-jumping to avoid kills at the last minute felt like a game-changer, and weapon options seemed more robust than ever (will take some practice to master though). I actually like the approach to soundtrack so far--modern, quality updates of the old favorites is just what I was hoping for. Interested to see what the rest of the game looks and sounds like!
Switch version literally has around half-second input lag, at least for jumping. Trying the demo on Switch and PC felt like two different games.
@@BoxoSpoons
Never touched the Switch version, because of all of the back lash centered around the choppy '30fps' and additional latency. PS5, XSX or PC are clearly the way to go, strictly for docked play.
Just as a heads up for people regarding the Switch version of this game.
I just watched an interview with the director of the game and though the game WILL run at 30fps on Switch, they were already aware of the Switch demo having lagging hitches and were already working on smoothing it all out; however, they had to release the demo as was at the time to make the deadline for the shadow drop in the Nintendo Direct. He confirmed the issue has already been fixed for the full release.
Also, the reason they had to go with 30fps on Switch is mainly due to all the bullets that can occur onscreen.
Remember when Konami were good!
That's WayFoward
One thing that doesn't have to do with the build at all that I am not sure about is the dashing. The last boss of the demo is actually designed around it. So far it just feels weird in a Contra game. I play lots of roguelites so it's not anything new to me but it just doesn't feel right to me in Contra. Maybe I will eventually get used to it. The price is also $10 dollars too much at least. I was going to get it right away but after playing the demo I am going to wait. I still have the Contra collection which runs fine.
Dashing was introduced in Hard Corps Uprising, so the ability feels nostalgic for me.
@@ultraspinalki11Huh I had a PS3 but never even heard of that game. I never played Contra 4 either. Looks like both are locked to the past unless you use unoffical means.
@@kcant65 Uprising is a prequel to the entire series, when Bahamut (villain of Contra Hard Corps) was a hero.
One of the main reasons I keep a PS3 is to play that game, and both PS2 Contra games available on PSN (Shattered Soldier and Neo Contra). A huge shame the Contra Collection doesn't have any of these, Contra 4 and Contra Rebirth either!
Totally agree! Played a bit of it myself today and it was just “meh” and pretty glitchy at times. I have the original NES cart, not to mention the Contra Collection which is far superior to this title. Great to see the devs take a shot at such an EPIC franchise. Moral of the story, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
For $40 I purchased the vastly superior Metal Slug Collection which has like 6 games!
Thank you.
I like challenges if it's adding because of the flaws of the NS, why not playing longer.
This game is very fun. Hopefully they fix the lag and stuttering frame rate before launch.
It looks like an XBLA game and I wish it looked like a WiiWare game. I love Contra, and I just don't understand how recent releases are so uninspired.
I had the same issues on Steam.
River City Girls 2 launched on Switch in a disapointing state but was fixed after awhile.
Gonna wait for a performance update and a deep discount and I'm gonna buy spidersaurs which is currently on sale for the price this game should be.
Tried the demo just now and yeah input lag is more and more of a problem with Switch games for me lately. It's also made a lot of FPS games unplayable on switch for me.
I won't be getting this day one right away but the gameplay looks great and I am going to get it for my switch it's just I'm going to have to wait till either on Christmas or early next year but yeah I'm going to make this my Rambo game
Would be a great anime if done right a pit fighter remake would be nice
I still havent tried the demo yet. I need to do that soon.
It's very fun
I’m playing the demo now. This will be a day 1 purchase!
The cartridges and discs won't be available till summer. Only digital next month.
@@misterlexx2721who told you that lie??🫵🤨🧐
Play the demo on anything but Switch!
Its playing well on steam deck oled, I may pick it up down the line when its reduced in price, fun but not premium price worthy in my opinion.
Ive replayed it and unlike what I thought first, there is no input lag. Despite a few stutters between some parts of the level, the main problem is the frame rate that is constant but always below 30fps. So the character looks heavy. Its exactly like when you played on pal 50hz system the old 60hz ntsc games.
Obviously the game was made on ps4 and they just decreased drastically the frame rate. They should speed up the game on switch.
I played the PS4 demo and it doesn't run great either. runs at 30fps and yes the input delay/latency is clearly there. pressing jump or any action takes around 1/3 second to actually happen on the screen. it doesn't feel good at all. i changed my mind and won't buy this game.
Wayforward switched to using the Unity engine and that can have serious issues on Switch. So it will unlikely be fixed and future Wayforward games will be inferior on Switch unless they change engines.
Not a fan of graphics but looks fun enough. My issue is it's lrgs doing it and too expensive, I'd pay £20s for physical
Can’t believe the demo was released with such a bad framerate for switch. I was looking forward to picking this up but no way as is and certainly not for $50.00...
My problem with this is the rate at which the guns fire. Like it's so slow compared to the original games.
I'll be buying this on STEAM and playing it on my Taito Vewlix.
I played the demo on the pc and saw 144fps on 1080p monitor. (My monitor is maxed at 144, not sure if higher fps is attainable?) I've played the first contra in the arcade back in the 1980s . The price does a little high . Operation galuga does add most of the previous gameplay techniques to this version. I hoping for a game here that is not too short and has replay ability with friends. A side note. I played the mobile contra returns which is a play to win . Stop playing that one. I will pick this one up. Switch build lacks of fps which at higher fps makes pc build of choice.
will wait for a discount
Fed up of substandard games relying on being finished in a series of patches. Price is also crazy. This is a $10 - $15 game
It’s not all about graphics. The Fun Factor is what ya want in a game. It plays fine on my Switch. No lagging at all.
Save yourselves 4.5 minutes, and listen to his 2 gripes at 4:25
Keep in mind DEMO software often uses a pre-release build. Since bundling this demo of a build that might be a few months old, dev teams often spend the late stages of development OPTIMIZING the game for the final release build. i.e., your experience on DEMO software is not necessarily the same experience as 1.0 software.
We seem to be getting alot of folks coming up with excuses for the demo which I find a little unusual. The demo is fine on all other platforms so that's the only comparison that can be made. We are a few weeks out from release at this point but hopefully you are right! This us me just commenting on what I see
I would buy this, but not for $39.99. You can get the Contra Anniversary Collection with 10 classic games for half that price, and most of those games are going to be better. I got that collection on sale for $9.99, though it's currently $19.99.
$4.99 on PlayStation store.
Is that Contra collection $19.99 physical or digital only??🎮🕹️🎮
Wayforward's games on Switch have been pretty good, I know some like to rag on the Switch's power now, but if it's one thing the Switch does right is sidescrolling games, and most indie games. Truthfully, I didn't notice any issues in the Switch demo, and granted the game isn't finished yet. They probably should of waited for the game to be ironed out more before releasing a demo.
In cases like "Batman Arkham Trilogy," I don't entirely blame the Switch for that, because frankly these are last-gen games, and "Arkham City" ran great on WiiU, a weaker system then Switch, so I think that's on the developers trying to hurry the release, and even their newer games on more powerful hardware have issues too, like "Suicide Squad."
Oh my gosh, you sound so deflated and disappointed!
I have downloaded the demo already. Will give it a bash today.
I played it on deck. But it's still kinda feels like a mobile game even at 60 fps. It's also fairly easy on the standard setting. If it hits 20 or less I can live with that, but I'm paying AAA prices for a lazy game. I spent 30 bucks for the 3ds contra which is 10x better
I’ll try it on ps5 and if it’s good I’ll wait for a price drop.
It runs fine on PS5.
I played the demo on steam deck and it was OK.
Definitely better than the switch but, it just doesn't feel as smooth as it should.
I'm definitely holding off until it's got some performance updates.
I find the controls super lagey. With a game like this you need quick responses from the controls.
You only played the Switch version? It plays fine on the other versions.
@@mitu123Copper yeah. Only have a switch. Need the portable gaming…
What the heck is that “spread gun”??? That’s not the spread gun, that’s a triple shot 😭
Its free on pc
Maybe "Spidersaurs!" is a better choice?
I played this in the arcades in my area it was ok. It feels like they just splat some ink and asking for to much money for a reskin.
That's a shame - I've not played the demo yet but input has spoiled quite a few games for me, so this sounds like a miss.
My experience with demo on series X - ran well, looked good, didn't notice frame drops or lag. 60 fps. But i still think $35 may be too much. Depends. I don't trust Konami
Original contra cool, had characters from 20-25% of screen the 4:3 screen size, they were pixel art...very good contrast,.. here I think they tried to get the 1:1 proportions , maybe the character a bit smaller, and it feels that way.
Sometimes you need to consider these differences, is not the same with a 'small pixel art ' character or prop.., when you replace it with a smooth looking 3D model, you loose a lot of definition and contrast.. the feet and legs, shadows, they keep blending with the background.. that's not how you want your platform to go... A style like viewtiful joe, would have helped much more. even if is not 'realistic'.
I agree. The demo is very laggy, unfortunately. I hope they fix it before the release, but i think it's not going to happen :(
It's only laggy on Switch. It's fine on other systems, even my laptop runs it way above 60fps.
Same issue with switch version
The game is unfinished. Even on my legion go there were some hitches. Yes, it ran better for sure on steam, but there were some bugs present. The game also froze on me, i jad to close the window and reopen the game again to restart. I don't think it's the switch hardware at all. This game can do 60 on switch easy. Hopefully, way forward can smooth out the lag and fps issues the switch version. Its an early build.
I've downloaded the demo, but haven't played it yet. I'm definitely not paying $40 for it. I will download the PS5 demo and try it out too.
Definitely try it as it plays fine on PS5.
Damn, Contra will always be one of my favorites from childhood. I’m disappointed in the state of this game, yeah I checked out my guy RGT’s video on this game as well. All I can say is “Damn” smh
Just by watching you, can see the difference and how smooth it plays on PS5, PS5 is the way to go
I find the controllers unresponsive for some reason. Every Contra before this one feels perfect to play
I just don't get how so many of these devs keep screwing up 2d/2.5d sidescrollers on the Switch???
And we know the Switch is not so weak that it can't run these types of games... Prince of Persia, Metroid Dread, Ori and a whole host of other similar games run just fine (and look even better).
It's definitely the engine and optimization in this case.
I can't believe they screwed up such a great game this is very sad
Switch version is the one they screwed up, the other versions are fine.
It's actually very fun. Try out the demo (not on switch hopefully).
I think complaining about what the background are the graphics is kind of pointless though because they purposely probably made the graphics this way to look like the old game like a old retro game that is what is in right now
@7:00, no seriously, been saying this for sometime now... Since Mega Man 11 at least. Don't know why major dev companies are going with this 2.5D graphical aesthetic. You know, the traditional 2D side-scrolling, but with 3D rendered models and environments. There are SO many independent game devs and pixel artists out there who can bring these legacy titles into the modern era, while retaining the nostalgia and aesthetic "soul" of the originals. We've seen so many pixel artists out there working on small projects that look lightyears (ironically) beyond this 2.5D style. It just looks so generic...
I played the demo and I thought I was off. I was missing platforms when jumping and getting hit way more than I should. Mind you run and jump games aren't my forte but still it felt way to frequent getting hit.
That’s not on you. The Switch port has atrocious amounts of input lag and a horrible framerate to boot. PC and PS5 versions are great though.
@@Gryzor88Yeah I only play it on PC and it feels perfect.
Demo was great, im excited for it now, im too old to be playing these hard ganes the easy mode was very fun but still good challenge switch is the weakest console so i wouldnt know how it runs on that
Switch should really take the prices down on their games.
Thankfully I have a Switch Pro now, the modchipped OLED, and overclocked it even fixed Ys IX in the town square AND outputting 720p docked image in handheld, Link's Awakening swamp area, MH Stories 2, Trials Rising, etc. So this game will run flawlessly for me on the Switch Pro. Not to justify this. They need to patch it. Nonetheless I'll be enjoying it with a solid 60 on Switch Pro.
I’ll just play Contra or Super C on NES
it's a demo. just wait and see if they fix this stuff.
I would agree if release wasn't a couple weeks away
Whenever someone asks me whats my biggest achievement in life, I remember being 8 years old and beating contra on one life.
Made sense, OG contra is hard AF, but whenever you die, its on you.
I was so hyped for this game so I downloaded the demo and I was disappointed. Control feels wrong, you cant easily jump over or duck under bullets (as in nes contra) and after 10 minutes of play my D-pad thumb was sore.
Feels slow and clunky not smooth and fluid as a contra game
Shat Soldier is still the best.
No physical no sale for me
I'll go Ps5 pick up
That or other versions.
You saying a system with those 2 zelda games, having problems running this game.
How can your eyes tell 30fps vs 60fps in a 2d game.
Switch version is good investment, will sell the best and will cost more in the future.
The only thing people could complain with rhe switch probably is long loading, my 3do loads faster than the switch
Frame rate issues, stutters, and input lag... and developers make games for only the Switch. Hmm. When are they gonna learn?
tried the demo, everything felt weak, the music was weak, the guns were weak, they have health bars! HEALTH BARS!!! and doesn't feel like contra should. you dont even lose the weapon you carried when you die you have it when you come back like wth? i may pass this one unless it goes on sale very cheap, i had hopes too.
This isn't the first Contra game to have health bars, that would be the Japanese version of Hard Corps
@@zenksren8206Contra on MSX(1989) had health bars before that.
ronnygranados2433 You should try to upgrade the weapons by picking up the same ones twice to increase range and damage, same thing happens in Contra 4. And you can turn off health bars in the same option of selecting your difficulty as I been playing the demo with no health bars. Also, turning off perks will prevent you from having the same weapon you had after you died.
@@mitu123Copper even still with all that not convinced and not a good 1st impression
