- Namibia’s bitter hundred-year struggle against
colonial rule came to an end on March 21, 1990, when Sam Nujoma was sworn in
as the first president of independent Namibia.
As the Cofounder and leader of the South West Africa People’s Organization
(SWAPO), Sam Nujoma spearheaded the country’s thirty-year military and
diplomatic campaign, attacking South Africa’s illegal presence in what was at the
time called, South West Africa.
In the process, Nujoma emerged as the personification of the Namibian
independence struggle.
It then took many years of revolt and warfare for Namibia to gain its independence
from South Africa and during the years of revolt and warfare, between 20 000 and
25 000 people died.
In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the story of Sam Nujoma,
Namibia’s First President and that country eventually achieved independence from
South Africa.

Kwame nkrumah was ousted and overthrown in 1966.Before even most of the southern african countries got their independence.I don't know where nkrumah failed if he could have taken Mwalimus advice he would have succeeded and retired peaceful just like Mwalimu who retired and handed over power and continued to be an african states man.
Tanzania, Zambia and Angola shall never be deleted from the history of liberation of Southern Africa. The roles they had played are so huge to narrate.

This maybe the first biography on this channel where the subject is not particularly tyrannical, dictatorial, or corrupt before, during, or after taking power. It is a refreshing change. Once more governments in Africa can consistently make smooth, peaceful transitions of power the entire continent will greatly benefit as a whole. Because instability in one country often reverberates into neighboring countries.

Why didn't the ANC teach us that the we had more than one victory over the struggle?
Because the ANC tries to rewrite history to an anti-Afrikaner history. The ANC needs to do so to justify their corruption and beurtkrag. And in fact, the ANC never had any victory. Without Frederik Willem de Klerk, Apartheid would still exist and South Africa would have or have had a civil war. Namibia would also still he South African. The role of Nelson Mandela was rather changing the government from a white (& Coloured) minority to a mixed government then "abolishing Apartheid". Also, Mandela did this together with De Klerk and Mbeki. The ANC wants to blame their failures to Apartheid. Consider that nearly all South African infrastructure date from Apartheid era.

I first visited Namibia in 1996, 6 years after independence. I had visited South Africa in 1994 but considered it to still be a "white" run country and was therefore a bit apprehensive about now going to a country that had had a black government for 6 years. My fears were immediately allayed. I found a country that was well run by Sam Nujoma and his government, with friendly people and devoid of the amount of corruption usually experienced in most African countries. As I had been conditioned to believe that the former head of a "terrorist" organisation and who was now the president would be like the corrupt heads of other recently independent African governments I was extremely surprised.
There is still a lot of poverty in Namibia, same like before. And high unemployment -30%. Sam Nujoma lives pretty well though.

My father was in Namibia for a peace keeping mission in 1989 from Ghana and brought back beautiful memories. He brought back the blueprint of the house he stayed in over there and built it in Ghana. I hope to visit there one day

As a Finnish I first of all thank you for the great work you are doing for making the content we on Europe normally do not have. Other thing, again As a Finn and our history with intependence strugle of Namibia, how does Namibians think about Finlands part of the intependence - like work of Martti Ahtisaari?
Namibian and Finnish relations remain extremely friendly, as the friendship started during the time when both of our respective countries were under colonial occupation.
The relations started through the Lutheran missionary missions done by the Somi people around the turn of the 20th century, that introduced Christianity to the dominant ethnic group in Namibia (Owambo People)
Martti Ahtisaari was given the honor of an honorary Namibian for his efforts at the United Nations towards Namibia's independence process at diplomatic level and has a school named in his honor.
In short, we have a relationship that has spanned over 100 years of contact with extremely good relations which hopefully trade can increase and reflect the genuine friendly relations between the two nations.

Hi Panu I don't know about how Finnish contribution is seen in Namibia but in Rhodesia which is now Zimbabwe the Scandinavian were dearly loved for the work they did supporting our freedom fighters fighting against racism. Sweden, afinaldn etc supplied our guys with food, clothing etc

Good documentary, but you left out the part of political concienceness of railway experience of Cde. Sam Nujoma, the crutial part that made him leave the country for the first time, that part Sam Nujoma learning & send off to petition the UN by Herero Chief Hosea Kutako, which he renamed after the Windhoek, Namibia international airport is name after.
Sam Nujoma was inspired by the work of Chief Hosea Kutako in Old Location. Chief Kutako send first late Pro. Mburumba Kerina to brief the situation in the U.S hand over the struggle for independence & illegal occupation o the oppressor & brutality action of the oppresser, therefore, petition of Chief Hosea Kutako with the Chief Councel wrote about the oppression of territory called South West Africa, Kerina the man who
coined the name Namibia after our desert, Namib desert, Prof. Kerina deserted the struggle and went to study medicine, which he didn't finish, later studied philosophy. Chief Kutako again send Advocate Fanuel Jariretundu Kozonguizi to take the petition, he too went to study & deserted the struggle. Its in 1961 when Chief Hosea Kutako heard that the two Herero he send abandoned the struggle, its were the Chief Hosea Kutako send Sam Nujoma, Sam Nujoma was under Hosea Kutako wings in Windhoek old location. Its here were Chief Kutako send Sam Nujoma to the UN, Rev. Michael Scott had a discussion with the Chief, Scott when back to wait for Zam Nujoma in the U.S. They did met later, After Nujoma gave the petition its when he was marked by SA apartheid regime.
Ya Toivo was a mine worker who was inspired by the ANC leaders like Chief Luthuli & Dr. Moroka, Dube & others who was very vocal that time. A group of Namibia mine worker mostly from Northern Namibia started Owamboland People Organization (OPO). Later this group were advised by Pro. Kerina & Sam Nujoma while they were in the U.S through writings to change the name Swapo, as the must now think national. Later Nujoma met other Africa gaints like Nyerere, Kenyatta, Seko Ture, Cabral, Kaunda, Ben Bella, Kwame & others, even Fidel Castro who inspired him further. As you know later PLAN soldiers were trained in communist countries.
Thanks for the documentary anyway, for future reference of our children, i just felt, for it not differ with Oral history that was pass through by those who where present in those days, its vital to add, it can also e verified by Cde. Sam Nujoma & others who are still alive. Its my take as history student.

Sam Nujoma 's wife is a Herero. Sam Nujoma was with the Herero people mostly until he left to exile. That's why today the Herero & Nama people was demanding reparation, its because Chief Hosea Kutako was leadership style was of a nationalist one. Indeed Sam Nujoma was instrumental.

August 1904: The Battle of Waterberg hands German forces under General Lieutenant Lothar von Trotha a decisive victory over Chief Samuel Maharero and Herero rebels. Von Trotha then gives an extermination order, warning that every Herero found in German-occupied land will be executed. Unarmed Hereros are routinely shot or hanged, their cattle are either stolen or killed and German settlers take over the land. This is in response to the killing of around 120 German settlers and soldiers by local tribespeople. Massacres of Herero and Nama people by German colonists and the Schutztruppe follow the Battle of Waterberg and Trotha's order. Hereros are driven into the harsh Omaheke region, where thousands die of hunger and thirst.

You committed a very big mistake in saying that the Kuito Kusnavale battle ended in a draw and people were tired, if that was the case the war in Angola wouldn’t last another 10 years. Namíbia it’s independence. Even when we were at war we never stopped supplying Namibia with weapons, even today both the Namibian and the Soith African governments went twice in Angola, the Namibia government issued an official thanks for the MPLA in Soecific and Ramaposa wants to sponsor a monument to be built in Angola, in a location were rebel South Africa soldiers were housed in Angola. I think that both things are true: it was a stalemate, but in the end it was also a political defeat for South Africa, because it prompted their withdrawal from Namibia. It was a military stalemate, because SADF and UNITA were unable to overrun Cuito Cuanavale, mostly as you say because of air superiority on the part of the Angolans and Cubans. The Angolans resisted the siege at such cost to SA in terms of casualties and loss of materiel, that they realised their presence in Southern Angola was unsustainable. Doing a deal with SWAPO was their best option in protecting their long term economic interests in Namibia.
